"Your majesty, Lady Victoria." The handmaiden introduces me with a bit of a flourish, and I curtsy deeply before the Queen of Asgard, my cheeks burning. I hope I'm doing it correctly.
Apparently I did fine, though, because Frigga smiles gently at me. "Hello, dear. My son told me all about you; come sit with me."
I rise from my curtsy, eyes wide. Thor told his mom about me?! "Y-yes, your majesty," I stutter. I quickly sit at the lovely little table in the garden across from the queen, trying to comprehend what is happening. Not only am I in Asgard, but the queen herself specifically requested my presence! What is going on?!
Frigga's gentle smile sets my nerves at ease very quickly, however. "My handmaidens informed me that you have already eaten. I have not, so I hope you don't mid if I eat while we talk."
I nod with a slight smile. "Of course, your majesty."
The servants place a delicious breakfast before the queen, and give me a cup of steaming tea and a couple of delicacies as Frigga makes small talk about my trip here (which was incredibly short for such a distance...) and my sleep last night. Once the servants finish, she looks me in the eye. "Well, let's get straight to the point, shall we?"
I nod, taking a sip of my tea. It's very good, unsurprisingly. Frigga smiles again. That seems to be something she does rather often, though I can see a few worry lines creasing her forehead. I have no doubt as to who caused them. I feel a wave of anger towards her mischievous son. How could he do this to his family?
"Thor told me that you were held prisoner under Loki while on Midgard. I called you here because I wanted to apologize in person to you, my dear." Frigga's eyes fill with concern. "I am so sorry for any pain that my son may have caused you. If there is any way that I can possibly make it up to you, please allow me to."
I try not to look shocked. She called me here to apologize in person? Where in the Nine Realms did Odin find such a good woman as this to be his wife? I quickly smile comfortingly at the queen, my heart aching for what I know she must be going through. Her own son, whom she'd thought dead, has returned a known criminal. I know she fears for his life, and is working nonstop to save him, and yet she took the time to come to me, a completely insignificant and mostly average Asgardian, and apologized profusely. "My queen, please do not apologize. It is not your fault. And besides, he treated me well, for the most part. Don't worry about me, your majesty."
Frigga's eyes light up with hope. "He treated you well?" She sounds quite surprised, so I quickly amend my statement.
"Yes, mostly. I mean, at first, he was cold and sharp, and practically strangled me to get the truth out of me." Frigga's face falls, but I continue before she can say anything, wanting to give her hope. "But after that, he began to train me in the art of magic, and was actually civil and polite. I believe he wanted to use my ability to become invisible to his advantage, and wanted me to have better control of the ability." I blush slightly in embarrassment at my next words. "To be honest, I had very little control of the ability at the time, but his instruction has helped me greatly, to my surprise."
Frigga nods, surprise still in her eyes, and thinks for a moment. I can almost see the wheels turning in her head, and it makes me a little nervous. What is she thinking? I now know where Loki got his observant nature.
"I assume the 'truth' he wanted was to know who you really were, seeing as he most likely did not know you were Asgardian?"
I hesitate. This is where I must tread carefully. Very carefully. "Ah, no, your majesty. He...he wanted me to tell him whether he would succeed in taking over Midgard."
Frigga frowns in confusion. "I see. And what did you tell him, might I ask?"
I smirk slightly. "I tricked him, and told him that he would win Midgard at a price."
Frigga nods, a sparkle in her eye, though I can see sadness on her features as we discuss her son's misdeeds. I decide to try my best to go easy on my descriptions of the problems he caused, for her sake. "And how did you know he would not succeed?"
I pause. Am I completely sure that I can trust her? Or rather, that I can trust her secrecy? I look around to be sure no one is near enough to hear me. There are guards standing a short distance away, so I lower my voice. "I...I suppose you could say that I have the gift of foresight, my queen. But I only know of certain events, and I can only see a small distance into the future. I just happened to be in the wrong place at the worst possible time, and Loki found out that I have that ability, and that I knew what would happen during his attempt to take over Midgard."
Frigga nods, a new understanding in her eyes. "I see." She watches me for a moment with eyes that seem to see straight through me. It's unnerving and comforting at the same time. "That is not the whole story, is it, my dear?"
I hesitate again, then shake my head. "No...it isn't, my queen." I look down at my forgotten cup of tea, debating whether or not I should tell her the rest of my story.
"Victoria, dear, you can tell me. I won't judge." I look up, and the queen gives me an encouraging smile. "But if you are uncomfortable sharing it with me, I understand."
I take a deep breath. "Thank you, my queen. I suppose my anxiety comes from the fact that I don't think you'll believe me, because you have no reason to. In fact, the only reason that Loki believes me is that he saw a memory of mine that proved my story. My memories are the only proof I have, and my story sounds very far-fetched. Crazy, in fact."
Frigga's eyebrows rise in surprise. "My dear, if you convinced Loki, then I will believe you."
I smile gratefully. "Well, I certainly hope so." I pause to gather my thoughts. "I am sure that you're wondering why I was on Midgard in the first place, being that there are few Asgardians there." Frigga nods. "Well, the truth is that...I'm not actually Asgardian." Wait, that didn't come out right. "I mean, I am Asgardian in body, otherwise I would not have the magical abilities that I possess. But I was not born on Asgard. In fact, I was not born in this world, or even this universe." I pause, gauging her reaction. She nods, and I get the feeling she understands what I'm trying to say without me actually saying it.
"You are from an alternate universe, aren't you?"
My eyes widen in amazement. I nod slowly. "How...how did you know?"
Frigga smiles. "I was raised by witches, dear. I know many things."
Once again, I'm shocked. "Well, that explains why your sons both thought I was a witch when I told them I can tell the future."
Frigga laughs. "Indeed it would. Now, may I ask how you came to be here? I have never heard of anyone crossing the border between worlds." Frigga's eyes are alight with curiosity, which reminds me of Loki's reaction when he realized I was telling the truth. I smile somewhat uncertainly.
"Well, I actually came here through a door. My uncle created the door, and I was snooping around in his garage one morning and found it." I look down, embarrassed. "It was unfinished, but I was curios, so I looked around and accidentally turned it on. And then I stepped through it, and ended up in Loki's hideout on Midgard, which is how I got captured."
I look back up to see an amused expression on the queen's face, which only serves to further my embarrassment. She chuckles, a faraway look in her eyes. "You know, Loki was the same way when he was younger," she says quietly, almost to herself. I raise my eyebrows in surprise.
"Really?"
The queen blinks, almost as though she'd forgotten I was there. She nods with a slight smile, though I can see the sadness in her eyes. "Yes, he was a very curios child. He loved to learn, and was a quick study in magic." She laughs a little. "One time, he used his newfound skills to turn his brother into a frog. He was always one for mischief."
I laugh, my eyes wide. "He turned Thor into a frog? That's hilarious."
Frigga's smile grows at my enthusiasm, some of the sadness disappearing from her eyes. "Yes, it was very amusing, though Thor did not agree."
I laugh again. "I'll bet he didn't!"
"So, why did you decide to come to Asgard, dear? You were not raised here, and I know the transition will be difficult for you." Frigga turns the conversation back to our original topic.
I look away, my smile fading. "Yes, it will be." I take another deep breath. "I came because I can't reveal the future to anyone, without potentially ruining the timeline of events that are happening and will happen. I..." I purse my lips, and look into the queen's eyes. I have to go through with this. She deserves to know why I'm keeping secrets. "Something is coming. Something terrible and devastating, something that seems impossible to overcome. I have hope that it can be defeated, but that hope only lies in this timeline. There is no other way to defeat it. And because of that, I have to keep the future a secret so that it cannot be changed."
Frigga nods. "You must protect the timeline."
I return her nod, relieved. "Yes. But, in order to do that, I cannot warn anyone of the terrible events that will happen." I look into her eyes, practically begging her to understand. She doesn't let me down.
"There are other potentially devastating events that you know about, and you're afraid that if you reveal them, they will be changed or prevented. But you're also afraid that if you don't reveal them, people will despise you for not trying to prevent those things from happening. Am I correct, dear?"
I nod, feeling tears rush to my eyes. She hit the nail on the head. Frigga gives me a sympathetic look. "Is there any way that you can return to your universe, so that you don't have to carry the weight of the future on your shoulders?"
At that, my tears spill over. I shake my head, quickly wiping them away. "No, my queen. I have no way to return home. That is why I came here. I only know of two events that will affect Asgard, while I know of many that will affect Midgard. I figured that if I stayed here, it would be easier to conceal the future."
Frigga nods. "I assume, then, that you have no home here."
I shake my head again, trying to get my emotions under control. "No, my queen."
A determined look crosses the queen's face. "You will stay at the palace, then, until I can find a permanent home for you."
My gaze flies up to hers in astonishment. "Really?" I whisper. Frigga gives me a confident but comforting smile, covering one of my hands with both of her own.
"Yes, my dear. I will help you."
Author's Note: Isn't Frigga the absolute best? Gosh I love her! She is so strong and amazing-definitely my favorite MCU character. Well, alongside Heimdall and Thor and Loki. Told you Asgardians are my favorite! XD
I love you all 3,000, and I hope you enjoyed the update! God bless you all!
