Author's Note: I don't own anything and I know it's out of season but it sounded like a good idea. Leave a few comments, good or bad. I'll try to come out with another new story soon but I can't guarantee anything, especially since my birthday's next week and Halloween's only two days after. Happy Halloween everyone and remember: Monday starts Red Ribbon Week.
Who would have thought? She'd grown up believing that true love came in the form of a knight in shining steel armor on a noble white steed. He'd come and sweep her off of her feet and she'd live happily ever after. But no, Temperance, Bones, Brennan had never experienced that kind of love and neither had anybody she knew.
"What about that knight in shining FBI standard issue body armor, Booth?" Her mind had gone off in a direction that she would rather not pursue, but even if she did have feelings for Booth, she was not even sure she knew what love was.
They had just finished lunch at Wong Foo's and were sitting in a booth talking about anything and everything that came to mind.
"Okay, so what was your first kiss like?" Bones asked him as he finished his recollection of an April Fools Day at school.
"Hmm, let me see if I can remember. I was like ten years old and my mom had dragged me to a Christmas party at a charity function or something in New Hampshire. Somehow, I got stuck under the mistletoe and didn't know. Then, some girl with Auburn hair came up and just kissed me. It took like ten minutes for me to figure out why she had and when I went to find her, she seemed to have disappeared and I couldn't find anyone who had known her name." He shrugged as he finished, with a sheepish grin.
She sat there staring at him, almost as if transfixed by his mere presence.
"Bones, earth to Bones, you in there?"
"Um, Booth, I think I know who the young girl was."
"What?! That's nearly impossible; you never lived in New Hampshire. How could you know?"
"My family often attended charity functions and we were in New Hampshire for Christmas. At the function, though, I saw a young boy who caught my attention. He was standing under the mistletoe and didn't appear to have a clue what he was supposed to do. So I just decided to go up and kiss him because he was standing under the mistletoe." She was blushing now, looking as if she regretted ever thinking that kissing a strange, young boy was a good idea.
He reached over and took her hand as he began to smile. "You mean that you've kissed me before? And never thought to get my name so that we might have been able to keep in touch?"
"Yeah, I guess you could say that. Booth, do you believe in love?"
"Of course. Why are you asking?"
"What's it like, love I mean?"
"To me, it's the feeling that you'd be forever lost if the other person were ever not there. It's knowing that when you get home each night, despite how your day went, you'll have a smile on your face because there's someone there that will accept you for who you are and nothing less. Love is being able to help each other and risk everything to do so."
"Booth, you want to go for a walk?"
"Sure, let me pay and we can go."
After he had paid, they walked out of the door and down the street to the local park. During their brief walk, both were silent but Booth surprised her when he reached over and took her hand in his.
"Bones, I don't want to push, but why the sudden interest in love?"
"What if I told you that I may have found love?"
Who is he? Do I know him? "Who is he? Because he must be special to capture your heart like that."
"It's you. It has always been you. Ever since that night at the party, I've wondered why I couldn't get him out of my head. Now I know why, you were my first kiss and have taught me so much, but I can't picture myself with anyone but you."
He stopped walking and pulled to him, as he bent to kiss her, he never saw the mistletoe they were standing below in the middle of DC.
