I had thankfully managed to convince Adam to leave me and Gavin, he wasn't happy about it, but he reluctantly did as I asked, asking me to call him later and let him know I was ok. I smiled slightly as he left, I truly appreciated how much he cared for me and wanted to protect me, but he had helped me become stronger and this was something I had to do alone.
"Gavin, what are you doing here?" I asked, "How did you even know I was here?" I added confused.
"You don't have anyone else" He shrugged "It wasn't difficult to figure out where you would be" He smiled that beautiful smile that had always melted me and turned my insides to mush "And I'm here because you're my wife and when two people are married, they don't give up on each other over silly mistakes" I looked down at the dogs all now sat in front of me, creating a barrier between the two of us. I stroked Kai's ears doing my best not to look into Gavin's eyes, I knew if I looked into those eyes, I would lose all of my resolve and run straight into his arms.
"Silly mistakes?" I questioned.
"Yes, silly mistakes Jayme" He sighed "I should never have slept with Lauren I know that and I should have treated you better but I didn't" Gavin shook his head and rubbed his face with his hands "I love you Jayme and I want another chance" he begged, his face was contorted in pain and I couldn't help but take a step towards him to touch his forearm.
"I've only just started to come through the other side of the dark hole you threw me in Gavin" I explained "I don't know if I can take a step back and risk going through all of that again" it hurt to say and it took every ounce of my strength to say it, I had spent the last month dreaming of Gavin coming to get me and tell me he loved me but now he was here I wasn't sure I wanted him to be.
"Please give me another chance, I know we can work this out" He gave me the signature grin that I had always loved so much "You wouldn't want to lose what we had over something so silly would you?" He asked.
Flashback
It was mine and Gavin's first date, we had known each other a month and after weeks of thinking someone like him would never even look twice at me he had asked me out. At 16 years old I had spent hours getting ready, getting dressed and then changing my mind and changing it again. I curled my hair and then straightened it out, I had done a smokey black eye and then removed it and gone for a more natural look. I had to look perfect.
Here
Gavin x
I squealed with excitement and turned to my best friend Lauren who had come to help me get ready.
"He's here" I said with excitement.
"You look perfect" she grinned taking a step back to get a good look at me.
"What if he doesn't like me?" I asked biting my lip.
"He'd be mad not to girl" She smiled patting my shoulder.
I walked out to Gavin who was waiting for me outside in his car. He was just a few months older than me and had passed his driving test very quickly, he'd only had the car a couple of weeks but I felt so mature and grown up being picked up for a date. I got into the passenger side and grinned.
"Hi"
"Hi, I have a surprise for us" He grinned in response as he began driving. After a few minutes of driving, we had arrived at a local park "We're here" He beamed. I looked confused out of the window at the park completely unsure as to why he had brought us here. Gavin quickly jumped out of the car and ran round to the passenger side in order to open my door for me "M'lady" he joked as he bowed his head and took my hand. I giggled in response.
"What?..." I began but Gavin held his finger up to silence me.
"You'll see" He winked, and the butterflies hit me as he did, I couldn't help but keep giggling nervously in his presence I'd done it since we had met there was just something about him that made me giddy. We walked a little way until we came to a stop next to a blanket and picnic basket. We sat down and Gavin put romantic songs on his phone.
"This is amazing" I smiled.
"Only the best for you" He replied with another wink and I was glad I was already sat down or I think I may have fallen down. We had the most romantic time getting to know each other and eating cute little heart shaped sandwiches and red velvet cakes, Gavin had really gone all out on this date and I had never felt so special. It was my very first first date and I was sure nothing could top it, I loved every moment with the boy in front of me and nothing could ever ruin it. I was sure of it.
I stood in front of my mirror brushing my little black dress down, I had agreed to meet Gavin for dinner to talk about things and I wanted to look good. He had to know what he was missing. I pulled the pins from my hair and let the loose curls fall around my face. I stepped into a pair of black heels and ran my fingers quickly through my hair one more time. I wasn't going to look any better than this, so I made my way downstairs.
"You look beautiful Jay Jay" My uncle John beamed as I descended the staircase.
"Thank you" I grinned.
"Anyone would think you're trying to impress the man" My aunt Katrina winked mischievously.
"Katrina, I told you me and Adam are just friends, we both just fancied dinner out that's all" I rolled my eyes to feign annoyance, I had lied to Katrina and John as I knew they wouldn't approve of me going to meet Gavin. I huffed and walked towards the door.
"Let me drive you" John pleaded with me.
"Honestly John I want to drive" I told him as I headed out the door only to bump into Adam "Oh my god" I jumped slamming the door behind me.
"H…Hey" He gulped looking me up and down "Going anywhere nice?" He asked.
"Just for dinner" I smiled brushing past him and going towards the car.
"On your own?" He asked walking after me.
"Yep" I huffed opening the car door and jumping into the driver's side.
"Can I join?" He asked getting into the passenger side.
"ADAM!" I snapped "What are you doing?" I sighed turning to face him.
"You think I'm going to let you meet him alone?" He laughed pulling the seatbelt across him "Yeah I don't think so" He shook his head "Where are we eating?" He grinned at me cheekily.
"Adam, I told you I'm going on my own" I lied.
"Looking like that?" He raised an eyebrow "Yeah…no you're not" He shook his head and ran his hands through his hair "No woman goes out looking that beautiful without a reason" He added. I bit my bottom lip out of nervousness and turned back to the steering wheel.
"Do you remember the discussion we had about you biting your lip?"
"Yes" I told him turning the key and beginning to drive down the driveway.
"Well stop doing it then" He growled "because looking like that makes it 10 times harder for me" He added "In more ways than one" He raised his eyebrow at me again.
"Oh…Oh…right…well…" I stammered "I never know what to say when you say things like that" I admitted as I drove. Eventually we arrived at the restaurant me and Gavin had agreed to meet at. "Please can you just leave and let me deal with this on my own" I almost begged my best friend.
"Nope" He grinned getting out of the car. "Do we have a reservation?" He asked walking in.
"I don't think so" I replied exasperated with his persistence.
"Table for 3 please" He smiled as we were shown to a table. I sat down and Adam sat opposite me with a smirk.
"Right…no…I draw the line there Adam" I snapped glaring at him.
"You're right…I would rather there was a table between the two of you anyway" He said as he moved to sit next me. I groaned as I picked up the wine menu and had a look to see what I could have.
"Don't forget you're driving" Adam muttered looking at the menu himself.
"I can have one" I told him as I continued to scan the menu.
"Ummm…I thought it was going to just be us" Gavin grimaced as he sat down opposite me.
"So did I" I sighed looking at him.
"You look beautiful by the way" He smiled.
"Thank you" I blushed.
"I already told her that" Adam stated finally looking up from his menu "Adam by the way" He grinned holding his hand out for Gavin to shake. "I'm the guy who's been helping piece back together your ex-wife after you cheated on her" His smile was sarcastic and sickly sweet.
"Adam please" I said through gritted teeth.
"Ok" He sighed pulling his hand back clearly seeing Gavin wasn't going to shake it "Just pretend like I'm not here" He told us as the waitress approached. We ordered our food and drinks and thanked the waitress as she came back to place our drinks down in front of us.
"Jay…I love you" Gavin smiled taking my hands in his.
"Ew" Adam grimaced.
"Adam please" I snapped looking at him with a look that could kill.
"Sorry" He raised his hands in surrender.
"Dude why are you even here?" Gavin spoke sharply.
"I'm here to make sure she doesn't do anything stupid" Adam replied leaning forward. I exhaled and took a large gulp of my wine as the two men continued to stare at each other.
"Right" I spoke "Adam if you insist on being here I suggest you keep quiet and Gavin Adam is my best friend he is just looking out for me in his own way" I looked between them both for a moment, eventually Adam sat back in his chair and began scrolling through his phone.
"Baby…I'm so happy you had someone here who was able to look out for you whilst I wasn't man enough to do it" Gavin admitted, my heart melted and I began to bite my bottom lip "It's so hot when you do that" He chuckled nervously.
"I'm glad you think so" I responded; I saw Adam frown out the corner of my eye but thankfully he didn't say a word. After a few moments our food came and all three of us began to eat.
"Please can you give me a chance to prove to you that I love you and want to be with you" Gavin told me as we finished our meals.
"Look…Gavin…A lot has happened in the last month" I saw Adam grin at Gavin from the corner of my eye and Gavin gave him daggers in return, I sighed "I don't want to go through what I have gone through this past month ever again" I told him.
"I know" He looked down at our hands intertwined on the table in front of us "You deserve better and I completely understand if you say no but I really think we could be great together again" he rubbed his thumb gently on my hands "Please can we try again?"
"I'll think about it" I told him.
"You're freaking kidding me" Adam uttered as he stood up "I can't watch you do this to yourself again Jay" He announced turning to leave.
"Adam please!" I pleaded standing up "You're my best friend"
"You're seriously going to give him another chance?" He laughed in disbelief.
"I said I would think about it" I told him sternly "I have a lot to think about right now, but I don't want to lose you no matter what I decide" I looked into Adams green eyes and silently pleaded with him not to be angry with me.
"Jay…this is ridiculous" He complained. I stood in silence with no clue how to respon, part of me knew this was ridiculous but I wasn't ready to let go…not yet "but you're an adult and I trust you I guess"
"Thank you, Adam" I nodded gesturing for him to sit back down. All three of us sat for another hour, Adam didn't say another word the whole time as me and Gavin discussed the last 10 years it felt as though all of the bad things had never happened between us. It was as if we were 17 years old again.
