Chapter 3: History of the Dragon Riders
In the Cave
All of the dragons and humans where on the cave floor knocked out for about an hour
Cassie was the first to wake up
"Ow what happened" she said getting up
"Oh yeah that strange light" she continued as she remembered the cave, the strange statue, and weird light
She quickly looked around for her friends and found them lying on the ground near her
She ran over and woke them up
"Whoa what was that?" asked Zak his head spinning
"Ow don't love it" said Wheezie
"Ow I think I preferred the slide" said Enrique sitting up
"Whoa, what was that?" asked Max getting on his feet
"Ow that was weird" said Ord sitting up
"Ow! Twice in one day this is ridiculous" said Emmy as Cassie helped her get to her feet
She was still reeling, not only from the beam but the dream as well
'What did that mean?' she wondered
She decided not to tell the others for some reason
"Everyone ok?" asked Enrique
Everyone said they were fine, dizzy but fine
"I don't think that beam did anything" said Cassie
"But still I think we should get out of her and go to Quetzal"
"I'm with her lets get out of her before anything else happens" said Zak everyone else was happy to get out of their as well
Outside
They went back the way they came
Through the tunnel, up the slide, and out of the cave
"We're finally out" said Zak happy they went through that and where still alive
"Oh yeah I almost forgot here Zak this is yours" said Emmy pulling out Zak's dragon disc and giving it to him
"Thanks Emmy" said Zak as he put it in his pouch
"Now let's go to Quetzal and find out what that beam was" said Emmy feeling a tingling sensation in her hand everyone agreed and they started on their way
The branches overhead blocked their way so they couldn't fly so they walked
"I'm just wondering one thing, what was that bang that sent Emmy down the cave?" asked Enrique
"I think I see what it was" said Wheezie pointing to a recently fallen tree
"That tree falling must have been what made that bang" said Max
"So we went through all that and nearly died because of a tree! Great just great" said Zak putting his hand on his forehead and shaking his head
They continued down the path in the strange woods until they finally reached the field where they had been playing their game earlier
"I think we can fly from here" said Ord
"Lets hurry to Quetzal my hand feels weird" said Emmy rubbing her hand as it tingled
"So does mine" said Max
"Mine too" said Enrique
"Let's hurry before something else happens to them" said Cassie
They mounted up and took off into the air heading to the school in the sky
All of them worried since a lot of weird things could happen to someone in dragon land and they wondered what could be happening this time
School in the Sky
They landed outside the school in the sky a few minutes later and went to the door and opened it to see Quetzal busy with some sort of potion that was cooking in a cauldron in the middle of the room
"Hola ninos what are you doing here? We don't have class today" said Quetzal stirring the potion
"What are you making?" asked Max noticing the cauldron was smoking a lot
"My special dragon salsa, want some?" he asked
"No thanks… um Quetzal we need to ask you something, have you ever heard of a dragon rider?" asked Emmy
Quetzals eyes grew wide and he looked surprised
"Where did you hear of them?" he asked sounding surprised and a little frightened
"In a cave" replied Max
"What happened did you go in the cave?" He asked now sounding almost scared
They all spent a couple of minutes telling him what had happened in the cave with the statue, the light, and the tingling sensation all of them had in their hands
When they where done Quetzal got up and sighed and put his hand to his forehead like he was thinking hard about what they had told him
They where really scared now since they had never see Quetzal worried like this
"Ninos what you saw was a forgotten part of dragon history a part that was forgotten long ago and for good reason" Quetzal said sounding sad
"Why what are the dragon riders and why did that dragon look so weird?" asked Cassie sounding worried
Quetzal got up and reached on top of a shelf and pulled down a book which he then started reading from
"Long ago humans in the human world lived in peace thanks to the Dragon Riders" he started
"What where they?" asked Max
"They where a group of dragons with human partners who where given special powers in order to make sure that both worlds where peaceful for all" he explained
"You mean like super heroes?" asked Max
"Yes they had powers greater than anything that existed or exists today; they had super strength, super hard scales, powerful spells, and could even travel to the human world as they wished, this was because that had the power of a dragons heart " explained Quetzal
"A dragon's heart? What do you mean?" asked Enrique
"A dragon's heart, or soul as some call it is extremely powerful possessing a power unmatched by anything in both worlds" said Quetzal
"It's really that strong?" asked Emmy
"Yes it's this power that makes dragons so nice" said Quetzal pointing to the dragons
"Each time you do something hard or really nice your heart grows a little making it stronger you see this happen all the time" he said
"Wait a second… are your talking about our dragon badges?" asked Cassie looking at hers
"So that's why they glow?" asked Zak
"Yes your hearts grow with experiences; when you do something hard or nice your heart grows in power which makes you so nice, friendly, and kind that is what makes dragon land so nice. This power flows everywhere bringing peace, and all the powerful magic in the air causes such strange creatures to exist here. So it is because the dragons are here that Dragon Land is so peaceful and magical" explained Quetzal
"So what made the Dragon Riders so special?" asked Enrique
Quetzal turned a page in his book and started reading again
"All dragons posses such power but only a few can use it to its full extent, I can use it a little for magic and spells but it is only a tiny bit of its power, for most dragons its locked inside of them and needs a key to be set free" he read
"A key? What kind of a key?" asked Max
"A dragon's full power is unleashed when they have a human partner, but not just any human, they have to be perfect for each other humans call them soul mates I believe" said Quetzal looking at the children now
"What's that mean? What's a soul mate?" asked Ord
"A soul mate is someone who is meant to be with someone else, like someone who gets along perfect with someone else, like a very best friend; but there is another problem as a human grows older their heart becomes darker and less pure due to the pressures of the human world so a dragon and their partner must meet when the human is young and their heart is pure" explained Quetzal
"When our hearts are pure? What's that mean?" asked Max
"When a human is a child they are very nice kind and polite…. well most of the time but as a human grows older they can begin to behave badly doing things like breaking rules and even hating their parents" said Quetzal
Everyone gasped
"How could anyone hate their parents?" asked Ord sounding shocked at the idea
"It can happen to humans when they are teens , anyway the only humans who are pure of heart enough to become dragon riders are humans who have been to dragon land as children and learned our ways" said Quetzal
"You mean like us?" asked Emmy
"Yes this keeps their heart pure from the temptation of the human world" said Quetzal turning a page in the book
"But what about that statue?" asked Enrique
"Well in order for someone to become a dragon rider in the old days dragons and their human partners would go to that statue in the cave; it has the special ability to see if a dragon and a human are right for each other and could become a dragon rider when they where ready; based on what you told me that statue decided you where perfect for each other" said Quetzal finally shutting the book
"So that means we can become dragon riders? Awesome! How do we do it?" asked Max
"You and your dragon have to put your hands together and say that spell that was on the statue, but it is much too dangerous, no dragon has done it in over 500 years for good reason" said Quetzal seriously
"Why haven't they done it for so long? I thought dragons liked to help people? With that much power the dragons could help a lot of people" said Enrique
"I won't tell you the reason you're too young now but trust me when I say it's too dangerous" said Quetzal seriously
"Now promise me you won't try to become dragon riders and that you won't bring up this subject again ninos" he continued
"We promise" everyone said
"Good now Emmy, Max, and Enrique you better head home it's getting late" Quetzal said to the children
"Ok" they said and they and Ord, Cassie, Zak, and Whezzie went outside
Outside of the School in the Sky
"Wow Quetzal was really scared of these dragon rider things" said Ord once they where outside
"Yeah and for good reason too I bet" said Zak
"I still wonder why he wouldn't talk about what happened to them" said Emmy curious as to what could stop the power of a dragon heart
"He said we're not suppose to talk about it" said Cassie
"Something pretty bad must have happened to stop them" said Enrique
"But what? I thought nothing could stop a dragon rider" asked Max
"I don't know but maybe he'll tell us when where older" said Emmy
"Anyway we need to get home before Mom and Dad notice we're missing" said Emmy looking at how dark the sky had gotten
"You're right" said Max looking up at the dark sky
They then held hands and chanted
"I wish I wish to use this rhyme to go back home until next time"
And with a flash they where gone
Playroom
When the children arrived back in their playroom Emmy sat up on the window sill and looked at Max and Enrique "So do you think we'll ever find out about what happened to the dragon riders?" she asked
"I don't know but I still think that becoming one would be cool" said Max picking up his cape
"Yeah but it sounds really dangerous maybe someday when we're older we can become dragon riders for now I'll stick to playing superhero in the playroom" said Enrique also picking up his cape
Enrique then looked out the window at the darkening sky and said
"I better be going home, it's getting late adios" he said as he headed out the door
Emmy and Max said adios back and waved him goodbye
"Hey! Come on Emmy I still need to find my comic books, will you help me?" asked Max to Emmy who had been looking at the ceiling lost in though about the dragon riders and her dream which she had decided not to tell anyone else about for some reason
'What did that dream mean?'
'Are we suppose to become dragon riders?'
'Could we really be that important?'
"Ok" she said coming back to reality
She then got off the window sill and began searching with Max for his comic books which where hidden under a blanket on the floor
