Stargate Atlantis

Season III Drabble

Spoilers for Episode 1: No Man's Land

A/N- Elizabeth's musings during this episode…well a portion of this episode.

Brave Face

She was trying to keep everything under control. Colonel Caldwell had already relayed the information to her about the attack. What strategies they used, and who they lost. Ronan and Rodney were still aboard the hive ships- presumably dead. Elizabeth could only wonder what Teyla was going through- this incident had brought the two of them closer and the young Athosian was constantly hanging around the control room. Teyla mourned the loss of Ronan visibly- though she tried to keep it hidden.

'And Rodney-'

Elizabeth couldn't stand the thought that Rodney was gone either. He had done so much for her and Atlantis over the previous two years. He had stepped in front of a gun for her, and he had saved the city and the members of his team more times than she could count. His selfish, sarcastic nature was always put aside when real danger was imminent. She thought of Radek, and how much he would be mourning the loss of his friend.

'We'll all be mourning the loss of Ronan, Rodney and-'

"We lost a few key personal in the attack" Colonel Caldwell's voice, broke her out of her daze. She looked at Caldwell and saw the pain etched on his face- she knew that she had asked him how the repairs were going, but her own grief was causing it hard to concentrate.

"Yes we did." Elizabeth answered curtly. 'We lost Ronan, Rodney and….John.'

"I'm sorry." Caldwell apologised, and for the first time, Elizabeth actually saw how sorry he was.

"So am I," Elizabeth agreed trying to keep her own emotions under control. "-but this isn't the time to mourn them."

And she was right, it was cold- even she would admit it- but she was right. They were in the middle of a crisis and as the leader she couldn't let her own personal feelings cloud her judgement. She began explaining to Caldwell about what their next steps were going to be- all the while keeping a brave face.

As the leader, that's all she could do in a crisis. Keep a brave face, and pray that everything would work out in the end.
