Chapter Twelve

Several weeks had managed to both come and go much quicker than Raditz had anticipated them to, training with the Turtle Hermit seemed to make time flow much faster than searching for Dragon Balls did. Throughout the week, every morning Raditz would find himself awakening before the crack of dawn to get in a meditation session. Master Roshi had assigned he and Krillin the same tasks they had completed their first day of training still, and once the sun arose, Raditz knew that it was time to wake up Krillin and begin their daily training regime. Not much had differed since then, albeit now the two students always carried around fifty pound turtle shells on their back, much like Master Roshi. Speaking of the Turtle Hermit, he had strictly avoided watching over his students' training in all ways. The only time they seemed to even see the old man nowadays was when he was beckoning them to complete their assignments and during dinner, where he would always be sure to answer their concerns by telling them that they weren't yet ready for the next thing he could show them. This irritated Raditz slightly, but even he had to admit, he was slowly getting stronger under the tutelage of the Turtle Hermit.

"Imma be honest, this isn't what I was expecting when the old man told me that he was going to train me," Raditz complained as he and Krillin rested after the long day of training. His tail was wrapped neatly around his waist as he spoke. "I thought that we'd be learning some of his special techniques… he hasn't even worked with me on that Kamehameha attack I took from him yet." The Saiyan added, grunting.

"I know right," Krillin followed, lazily relaxing in the shade of a palm tree. "I really wish he would act like he cared a little bit… I would have stayed at the temple had I known we'd just be Roshi's errandboys."

"At least we know they're doing something right?" The Saiyan commented. "Just look at you… you're not panting for dear life as you were when we first began."

"I mean, I guess you're right there," Krillin said with a shrug. He had to admit, he was in the best shape of his life. Still though, he was a fighter… he wanted to train by fighting, not by doing someone else's chores. "But still, I'm not the biggest fan of slacking off on my sparring techniques. How's delivering milk going to help me fight dudes twice my size?"

"How about we have a little spar then?" Raditz suggested, rising from the grass. "Maybe then, we could give each other some pointers since the old man's not going to do it?"

"I don't know," Krillin interjected, rubbing his shoulder in remembrance of the solo fight he'd challenged the Saiyan to previously. "We both know you're way stronger than me."

"How's this?" Raditz asked as he pulled the fifty pound shell to his shoulders. "I'll wear this shell, see if I can even keep up with you in it."

"I don't know if that's fair," Krillin answered, still hesitant with the request. He had worn the same shell as Raditz, them things really weighed you down after you took a few steps. "You'll get demolished if I don't have mines on."

"I'll just have to be better then, globehead," Raditz shrugged, strapping the purple turtle shell securely to his back. "You know what they say… whatever doesn't kill you just makes you tougher."

"Fine then," Krillin said, giving in finally. Who was he to pass on the chance to finally pay Raditz back for their first scandal. "If you're so insistent on getting your tail handed to you."

A second later, Raditz heard Krillin's turtle shell hit the ground. On command, the small monk shot towards the Saiyan with a speed that neither he nor Raditz knew he had. Reaching striking distance, Krillin launched his fist towards his peer's gut in an attempt to double over the taller boy. Despite being slowed down by the shell he wore, the tailed fighter lifted a knee at the last second to block the strike. Although he was given the opportunity to do so, Krillin didn't follow up on his attack. He was very much astonished at just how quickly his body seemed to move now in only a few weeks of intense training.

"Whoa, I feel much faster," Krillin squealed to himself, more so focused on just how he felt than the ongoing match.

The Human's moment was abruptly interrupted as his Saiyan foe leapt towards him, sending a knee directly to his abdominal area. Krillin doubled over in pain, feeling as his gut flared as the powerful blow slammed into it. He hadn't thought that Raditz would be able to even keep up with him with the handicap he'd placed on himself but the Saiyan still proved to be quite a nuisance and just slightly slower than the monk. Not letting up, Raditz followed up his kick with another one, a mighty axe kick to the back of Krillin's head. Attempting to press the issue to his hurt opponent, Raditz's speeding fist was met with an open palm as Krillin's defenses seemed to finally catch wind of what was going on before he could be further incapacitated.

With this, Krillin took the initiative to go on his own offensive spree. Charging towards his Saiyan companion, the monk let out a forceful sweeping kick in an attempt to offset the young warrior's balance. Swept off his feet, Raditz felt an impromptu soreness in his own stomach. Spitting out a loogie mixed with some blood, the Saiyan looked down to see Krillin's fist buried into his gut. Feeling the Human's fist in his back, Raditz fell to the ground hard, an extra helping of pain spreading through his body as a small dust cloud covered the area.

"How ya like me now?" Krillin questioned the Saiyan, holding his defenses for what he knew was coming.

When the dust cloud had cleared, Krillin's eyes widened at what he saw. Where he had assumed Raditz would be sprawled out in defeat was just the purple shell that the Saiyan had been wearing previously and a few drops of fresh blood. Panicking, he tightened his guard as he awaited for Raditz to reappear in his line of sight. Sweat beaded down his forehead at the realization that all handicaps were now off, he knew that if he felt way faster that Raditz had to be having the time of his life realizing his newfound speed.

Master Roshi calmly sat to himself, rocking in the wooden rocking chair that sat on the porch of Kame House. His eyes were glued upon the match between his two students, not that they knew he was watching them. In the past few weeks that had come and gone, the Turtle Hermit had anticipated this fight to happen. He knew that eventually one of the two, more than likely Raditz, would grow bored of the endurance exercises and challenge the other to a battle, they were fighters not working men after all. Raditz was impatient and prideful, and with Krillin irritating him, Roshi knew that he would make it a deal to become as strong as he could, as soon as he could. Though he felt for the boy, knowing why he was this way. If there was some sort of dictating tyrant out there destroying worlds and breaking apart families, he knew what was going through the Saiyan's head.

Originally, Roshi had different plans for the boys. He was going to hold back on their training just enough so that they'd be defeated in the upcoming tournament and remain humble and committed to training, but he quickly decided between that. He knew that as long as Frieza was out there, Raditz would never give up on his training for a second so he didn't have any worries on that end. He didn't have to worry about Krillin either as long as Raditz stayed diligent, the boy's competitive spirit would keep him running behind the Saiyan's tail as long as he didn't beat himself up too much in hopes of one day eclipsing him in strength. He didn't have the heart to tell Krillin that it would never happen, he knew the boy kind of knew so he was just glad that he used it as motivation rather than a reason to throw away all of his training. As he continued to watch his two students unrelentlessly charge one another with no intentions of slowing down, the old master came to the conclusion that although the boys weren't ready just yet… he'd let them continue to do their own training and see just how they trained best without intervention. He was similar yet very different from both of the boys, as they were with one another, so he'd let them decide for themselves how best they improved. Then, once they learned more about their own styles, he'd teach them some of his techniques and elements of the Turtle style to best incorporate into their skillsets. Nevertheless though, Roshi smirked in pride at his new prospects, both were already two of the strongest he had ever trained.

Another two months passed by without so much as an incident as Raditz and Krillin continued their gruesome yet worthwhile training under Master Roshi, or at least under the old master's supervision. Now, just four months remained until the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament began, and the two fighters were already ready to make their tournament debuts with more than enough time to sharpen up any flaws in their skillsets. In the time that had passed, the Turtle Hermit had begun actually working with both of the boys more than before -teaching them a few of the advanced Kame techniques. Krillin had even managed to progress as far as to being able to both fly and send out the most basic of ki blasts. His peer, the Saiyan Raditz, had also improved his ki usage skills, using most of the time he trained to hone in his Kamehameha Wave and the Saturday Crush, an attack he had created, to the point where while they weren't mastered, they were at least valuable assets in battle.

Raditz stood to himself on the coastline of Training Island, watching the beautiful waves of the ocean roar and slam into the sand. After completing his daily routine of delivering milk amongst his other duties, seeing as he had a whole day to himself, he had decided to come here to soothe his mind. Seeing the blue water cascade against the gritty shoreline, Raditz couldn't help but wonder just how much the sea reminded him of Bulma -that unique turquoise hair and those sky blue eyes. The Saiyan sighed at the thought of the lady of his dreams, he felt a bit bad for not visiting her in the city like he had promised but being strong enough to protect her from someone like Frieza was much more important of a deed than simply stopping by for a few to chat. Nowadays, training took up so much of his time that finding some spare time to make the three hour long flight to West City and then make the same flight back, and then be up bright and early for training seemed almost impossible. He just hoped that she would understand why he hadn't been in contact the next time they crossed paths.

In other news, neither he or Krillin no longer grew winded by the end of their routines. They were improving, that much was sure. Some days they even finished before noon and would then have the whole day left for training, shenanigans, or whatever else they would get into with Launch. Other days, Krillin and Raditz would both be riled up and in the mood for a spar that would last for hours at a time, until either one admitted defeat or their bodies gave out on them -whichever came first. Sometimes, usually once a week, Raditz would dismiss the Human from their sparring session and choose to instead work more so on controlling his energy output and using his energy attacks and techniques.

"SATURDAY CRUSH!" The Saiyan screamed out for the fifth time of the evening, unleashing a powerful beam of ki rippling through the ocean's rapids. "Now, KAMEHAMEHA!" Raditz said, following up as he sent the sixth Kamehameha Wave of his training session. This wave was far larger in size than the previous, tearing through rock and sea as it was released.

"You've improved quite well," A voice commented from behind the Saiyan. Recognizing the elderly voice, the fighter turned to face his mentor. "And quite quickly at that."

"I think that I'm starting to get the feel for my ki," Raditz said with a smile, gloating over his achievement. It was true, his body was becoming more and more accustomed to the more powerful and constant uses of his ki that he'd been taxing his body with. It felt like he had an entire vault of energy at his disposal now. "I've been working on them all morning out here and I'm hardly winded. This couldn't have taken you fifty years to master."

"Don't get it twisted, you may have learned to properly use the technique," The Turtle Hermit butt in, interrupting Raditz. "But you're far from mastering it."

"And what exactly do you mean by that?" Raditz questioned his teacher, feeling a sting in his pride at the constructive criticism.

"You must learn to concentrate the attack, put all of your energy into a single sufficient blast rather than tiring yourself out with ten puny ones." Roshi instructed the tailed Saiyan. "I'm not sure if this is because of your race or what, but you have an enormous reserve of ki so you're going to need to use just that. Try both of those attacks again but this time, try holding the blast as long as you can, unleash as much energy as you can until it's almost uncontrollable, then release it as you just did."

"Spill the beans, Roshi. What's finally made you want to act like my mentor and start training me?" Raditz spat out in spite. "Or do you actually believe that you've been what your people would call help these past few months?"

"I'm your teacher, not your caretaker," Roshi answered snappingly. "I gave you instructions on your training, an air-conditioned place to rest, nourishment after lessons, hell… I even gave you the shell on your back! Did you want me to interrupt my stories just to help wipe your butt and hold your hand while you fought too?"

Raditz grimaced at this. He wanted to say something but what would he say?

"You and Krillin just weren't ready yet," The Turtle Hermit continued with a sigh. "I've been watching, you know that. I wanted to let you both grow into your styles before I went in messing with anything. It's how I figured out that you're more of a visual learner and Krillin's a talk me through the steps kind of person."

Raditz's mouth widened at this. It was true, he had to literally talk Krillin through the principles of ki earlier originally. Had Roshi seen that? He then thought about how easily everything seemed to come after he watched it rather than was lectured -flying under Gohan's tutelage, learning the Kamehameha, even Yamcha's Wolf Fang Fist could be mimicked if he chose to study it while the bandit used it in the upcoming tournament.

"You focus more on your offensive output than anything, and if it weren't for your great reserves of ki, you wouldn't last long against any formidable foe. You're a natural fighter, Raditz with your keen reflexes and your superhuman resilience. When you get the ups on your opponent, finding and keeping their biggest openings in your sight will help your offense dominate." Roshi told the alien, continuing immediately. "As opposed to someone like Krillin. He focuses on the nimbleness and meek presence his size gives him to surprisingly keep up with you, despite the difference in strength between you both. Working with you must have opened his ki valves, he has far higher levels of ki and control over it than I'd expect for somebody his age,"

Raditz continued to take in the old man's words. He had both he and Krillin beat on experience and everything he was saying was true. There was a reason his grandfather had the power he had. Roshi was that reason.

"Nothing left to say, huh?" The old man exclaimed with a pull from his pipe. "Go on, try what I said. I'm Master Roshi for a reason, now,"

"Fine," The Saiyan replied, rolling his eyes. Turning to the waves, Raditz raised his hand to the sky. Bringing pink colored ki to his palm, he pushed past his limits and funneled more energy into his hand as it condensed into a small sphere. "Saturday Crush, go!" The Saiyan cried as he flung his arm forward, releasing his ki blast into the ocean.

"Very good," Roshi praised the young alien with a nod. "Now, the Kamehameha Wave."

Cupping his hands in front of him and then bringing them down to his side, the long-haired student flared his energy to its max. Gathering it in his cupped hands, as his hands brought out his reserved ki, the Saiyan began to say, "Ka…me… hame… HA!". Upon the final syllable, Raditz shot his opened palms forward as a beam of blue colored energy erupted from them in a display much larger than he had ever done. A sonic boom rang through the area and gusting winds broke apart trees in the radius of the attack.

Raditz panted as he dropped his hands, trying to regain his energy. As the lights died down, he saw that an entire tunnel of sunken earth split apart the ground and water. The Saiyan's eyes widened at this… he had caused this much with just a simple energy attack?

"I'm surprised you managed to put that much energy into that one," Roshi smirked, the glare from his sunglasses showing intrigued eyes. "The first twenty years I tried that, I always ended up detonating it prematurely."

"It wasn't much of a challenge," Raditz repeatedly insisted, lying through his teeth. The old man had been right, that blast felt much stronger. "You just so happen to be a pathetic Earthling while I am a Saiyan Warrior."

"Since it appears that you have an extreme liking over sparring, I figured that the best way to improve your reflexes would be for you to face off against an opponent that is much stronger than you… such as me." Roshi answered. "But we will both keep our turtle shells upon our backs."

"Bring it on then old man," Raditz confidently smirked, a bit of cockiness revealing itself. "I've been waiting for my rematch."

"Wait a second," Roshi interjected, ceasing the boy's taunts. "Krillin, come out here." He yelled a second later.

"Yes Master Roshi?" The former monk stated, racing over from the insides of Kame House, where he had been peacefully meditating. He had begun to meditate a lot more than usual once Raditz had commented that it would help him improve his usage of ki, just as it had done for him. Taking the advice, Krillin was quite stunned by the results. Just as Raditz had explained, due to meditating he was able to fire basic ki blasts without growing fatigue, along with gaining the ability to fire some larger blasts of energy before he would be depleted of his inner ki.

"Go over there to Raditz," Master Roshi instructed the shaved student. "The two of you will be sparring against your old man… at the exact same time."

Raditz nearly coughed up in disgust of teaming up in a fight, something that highly went against a Saiyan's pride. "Not a chance Roshi," The Saiyan spat out. "A true Saiyan Warrior fights alone."

"Sorry to insult but that means that true Saiyan Warriors are foolish," The old man suddenly shot back after the Saiyan's sudden outburst. "Having allies and working together with others against a much stronger opponent is an extremely important thing to learn if you want to become the strongest warrior you can be. Sometimes an opponent will be much stronger than you… just like right now. During times like those, you must work as a team to overcome the odds and beat the foe."

"Fine then, Krillin get ready," Raditz announced, positioning himself into a fighting stance.

"Let's do this," Krillin followed up, getting into his own fighting stance.

With that, the two martial artists charged their master, the much more experienced Master Roshi. The two warriors suddenly reached the battle-hardened Turtle Hermit, throwing punch after punch at the man's bald head. To their surprise, each of their strikes was easily being either blocked and completely evaded. The boys continued to lash out their completely uncoordinated attacks at their teacher, who was managing to effortlessly dodge each of the charging limbs.

Raditz suddenly charged towards the old man, launching a kick directly to the arm. However, just seconds before the blow could connect to its target, Roshi had managed to lift an arm, grasping the Saiyan's ankle. Using a combination of his sheer strength as well as Raditz's own momentum, the old master managed to fling the Saiyan directly into a nearby rock formation, which the Saiyan involuntarily smashed headfirst into. The Turtle Hermit then shifted his attention towards Krillin, unleashing a small amount of his ki to fire a small kiai blast, packed with enough power to push the attacking monk back a few feet.

Emerging from the pile of pebbles and small stones, Raditz took a few seconds to think of a strategy. At that exact moment, Master Roshi's words of wisdom began echoing through his mind. He understood that if he wanted to walk out as a victor as this match, he would have to work alongside Krillin and the two would have to attack strategically, coordinating their blows with one another's. Upon charging back towards the turtle master, the Saiyan suddenly used his head… planting a fist firmly into the Earthling's jaw after calculating where the Turtle Hermit would end up being after he dodged Krillin's jump kick with a flip of his own, meeting Raditz's muscular fist directly to the jaw.

"Very good the two of you," The old master smirked as he shrugged off the damage he was feeling. "It looks like you are finally starting to get what I said… meaning that I no longer have to hold back." Master Roshi finished, swiftly closing the distance between himself and the two beings. Firstly, the wrinkly skinned individual had decided to attack Krillin, delivering a speeding bullet of a kick swiftly to the Human's stomach. Luckily for Krillin, he possessed just enough speed to dodge his superior's charging foot, sidestepping out of the path of the blow.

Raditz abruptly cut into the battle, hoping to intervene before the old master could even realize what was happening. As the Saiyan hurled his armored foot at Master Roshi's back, hoping to strike the unguarded section of the mentor's back, Master Roshi suddenly turned around, meeting the blow with mighty forearm before devastatingly striking his alien student with a high paced assault of punches and kicks, which were all fired at a speed that allowed Raditz to block only a few of. As he was struck by a mighty ax handle blow, Raditz managed to recover midair and shoot back towards Roshi, with Krillin thinking the same thing. However, both Turtle trainees were met by nothing more than a powerful clenched fist directly to the gut, packed with more than enough force to send both students to the ground.

Raditz managed to pick himself up a few seconds before Krillin, a slight smirk revealing itself upon his bruised face as he slowly brushed the mound of dust off of his clothing. This was just the fight that Raditz had sought from Gohan... a fight against a superior warrior who was not holding back even a bit of their strength, even if it meant delivering an incredibly intense amount of damage to him. The Saiyan then cracked his knuckles before charging back into the fight, sending out a flurry of punches and kicks aimed specifically for the much stronger warrior, Master Roshi. Krillin, seeing this, finally arose from the ground, decided to join the party as he dashed towards his legendary master.

The two warriors approached Master Roshi, each of them lashing out with extremely coordinated attacks intended only for the elderly martial artist. The Turtle Hermit, due to his incredible speed, happened to easily dodge a majority of the blows, unable to stay in rhythm with the remainder of the strikes as he was inflicted a great deal of damage by the two students. However, Roshi did manage to send out much more damage to his opponents than that of he was inflicted.

Master Roshi, seeing his students' blows advancing towards him much slower by the second, realized that his students were beginning to tire out. Because of this, the old master suddenly let down his defensive stance, instead taking upon an offensive minded fighting form. Due to his much higher speed and stamina, the Turtle Hermit managed to rapidly launch an iron fist directly into Raditz's stomach, doubling the boy over in pain as a gush of blood mixed saliva dove out of his mouth. Using the boy's vulnerability to his liking, Roshi then flipped around, striking the long-haired Saiyan with a mighty ax kick to the back of the head. Once the warrior's struggle to rise back up was completed, Roshi compelled his knee upwards with a fierce hi jump kick, smashing his muscular knee directly into Raditz's chin with more than enough force to send the Saiyan hurling into the air.

Turning his attention to Krillin for the time being, Master Roshi effortlessly dodged a panic punch fired by the Orin Temple trainee, countering with his own strike, this one a punch packed with the force needed to knock the boy away. He then disappeared from the warrior's view, reappearing a fraction of a second later albeit behind Krillin this time. Before the baldheaded child could even comprehend what was happening, his much stronger master had already sent a powerful open palmed strike directly to his back, stunning him momentarily. Taking advantage of this, Roshi suddenly grabbed the boy, flipping in midair to lift Krillin into the air and down incredibly hard onto the rocky ground, exerting all of his force onto the Orin Temple midget. The devastatingly powerful blow was more than enough to defeat the mighty warrior, Krillin.

Having finally defeated Krillin, the old man that was Roshi suddenly turned around, barely managing to deflect a quickly traveling energy packed ki blast fired towards him by Raditz. Coming eye-to-eye with the Saiyan, Roshi had to admit that he was quite impressed by the Saiyan's moxie… how he never gave in. It was evident that the warrior had been badly beaten, evident by the fact that he stood in a manmade crater tightly clenching his throbbing ribcage with his non dominant, though still in a fighting position, showing that he still wanted to go on with the match although he knew that he couldn't win it.

"Do you actually think I'm done yet?" He managed to grunt between a set of severely clenched teeth, his tail standing straight up in anticipation.

"Come on then… I'm ready," Master Roshi demanded with a smirk painted upon his face. The Saiyan nodded before he did as instructed and charged the old man with his injury limited speed. Within two seconds Raditz was once again in front of the bearded martial artist, throwing out as many punches as he could at a slowed speed, mostly due to the fact that his chest ached in pain with each blow dealt as well as to the fact that the long-haired warrior had nearly exhausted from the ongoing battle. The red pair of sweatpants that the boy wore upon his ripped body had been severely ripped, especially in the knee areas while the black tank top that he sported had been torn to shreds to the point where the bottom half of it had been ripped from its straps, hanging halfway off of the long-haired fighter's chiseled, though now bruised, chest.

Roshi easily managed to dodge each of the Saiyan's weakened strikes as well as returning a few of his own, adding on to the outstanding amount of damage that Raditz had already been inflicted. When he had pummeled nearly to the ground Raditz suddenly pushed himself up, back flipping a few feet away from Master Roshi before he placed his right hand to his side, charging a purple blast of energy into it. "SATURDAY…" The Saiyan growled as his body continued to ache as he mustered as much of his energy as he could give up into the expanding sphere of pink ki. "CRUSH!" He screamed seconds later, thrusting his arm forward as he flung his attack at his lightly damaged opponent, Master Roshi.

"Kamehameha!" Roshi suddenly chanted, rapidly gathering his own arsenal of energy into a large ball of blue ki as an amazing rate of speed. The Earthling then thrusted his own cupped hands forward, unleashing the large wave of energy at Raditz's own blast. Roshi's Kamehameha instantly collided with Raditz's much smaller Saturday Crush, slowly pushing both of the giant amounts of energy towards the long-haired teenager. After a brief struggle, the blue beam of energy managed to overpower the purple sphere of ki, suddenly jolting forward as it sent both energy attacks back at the Saiyan, Raditz. When the large cloud of dust that had been created finally died down, Raditz still stood, panting at a furious pace. His clothes were now nearly completely torn from his body, some pieces of cloth disintegrated from existence as his entire body was nearly completely covered in blood, bruises, and first degree burns. The young Saiyan attempted to bow to his master out of respect, but lacked the energy needed to do so, instead collapsing to the ground, finally defeated.

"Still got it," The Turtle Hermit grinned, praising himself for defeating both of his students. "But if I don't begin training once again… I don't know just how long I'll be able to keep this up." He laughed, then whined and he clutched his ribs as he realized that for the first time since he was 27, he had broken a rib while fighting.

Meanwhile, deep in the Diablo Desert, Yamcha continued with his training for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. He had been delayed helping Mai tend to her broken leg but he was making up for lost time now. A smirk pushed through his stressed cause frown as he finished his six hundredth push up, the thought of the Saiyan, Raditz, entering his mind. If the boy was training under the legendary Turtle Hermit, Yamcha knew that he had to work three times as hard as he ever had to improve and keep up with the Saiyan. He had promised the fighter a good match and he was hellbent on giving him just that!

"Wolf Fang Hurricane," Yamcha screamed, charging towards a boulder as he exerted his ki throughout his body. Striking it with a flurry of claws and kicks, the boulder slowly chipped before it smashed to nothing at the bandit's newfound strength.

"Yamcha," The voice of Mai called out as she walked out of the small shack in her crutches towards the long-haired bandit. "It's getting late."

"I have to get stronger for the tournament," Yamcha pleaded, bringing his raven haired woman into a kiss. "I know Raditz is out there training all night long, just two hours then I'll be in."

"Bandit, you have four months before the tournament," Mai sighed, pouting and putting his head on Yamcha's shoulders. "One night in with me shouldn't affect that."

"Alright," Yamcha said, giving in as he untied his bandana from his head. "Let's go eat," The bandit smiled, his body in need of a warm meal.
