Chapter 08: A Mermaid's Tear pt. III
A few days earlier…
Zhu Que sat on his throne, contemplating about what he's going to do in a few days. His newly appointed admiral knew better than to bother him, so he left to mobilize his master's army. Zhu Que glanced at his talisman, a highly decorated sword with a phoenix intertwining the hilt. He was reminded of his recent encounter with his beloved Jade Dragon.
The Celestial Warrior of Fire did not expect to see his spouse again. Ever since he left for that mission, Zhu Que had not been the same. During his absence, he thought Ngọc Long returned to her family and wed again, believing Zhu Que to be gone forever. He never expected her to become a member of the Gemini Council of Kandrakar, let alone chosen as the mentor to the Guardians, a mentor to those who are standing in his way on conquest!
Zhu Que wanted Ngọc Long to be with him, but his heart was filled with anger when she rejected his ideals, vowing to stand against him. No matter what happens, he was certain that he'll meet Jade again on the battlefield and only one of them will be the victor. What cruel hand of fate this is.
"My Lord?" said Agni, his new demonic admiral spoke. "Lady Seiryuu is here to see you."
Zhu Que sighed wearily as he watched his sister letting herself in.
"My, my, what has gotten into you, brother?" Seiryuu smirked, striding in proudly. As she passed Agni, she lustfully stroked his face with a mocking expression. Agni tried his best to show no sign of falling under her spell, but his eyes betrayed him. Quickly, he bowed to his master and left the throne room before Zhu Que could incinerate him on a whim. Seiryuu laughed, "Aside from being more distant from us than usual, you seemed to show less of your anger upon the mortals. Don't tell me the Lord of Wrath has gone soft!"
Zhu Que frowned. "What doth thee want, Seiryuu?"
"Can't I visit my most favorite sibling on the eve of his siege?" Seiryuu smiled before she suddenly found the tip of his blade against her throat. "Now that's more like it."
"Do not mock me," Zhu Que warned. "I'll ask thee again, what business do thou have in mine realm?"
"Your recent report on that little village troubles me," Seiryuu replied. "I want to know why you didn't incinerate everyone. You had the Guardians at their most vulnerable and yet you showed them mercy?"
Zhu Que lowered his sword. "They escaped. But why end their miserable lives there whilst I could kill them all on a grander scene?"
"Glad to see that you also have a flair for dramatic end games. Hmph, for a moment there, I thought you had gone soft on them. Either that or…" she trailed off, "… you're hiding something."
Zhu Que shows no reaction. "What maketh thee harbor such foolish thought?"
"Well, you do seem a little bit more forlorn," Seiryuu noted. "Tell me, did you encounter something in that jungle to soften you?"
Zhu Que eyed her wearily, but choosing his words carefully, he replied, "The people of Annam once revered me as a protective godling, yet now they trembled in fear of mine presence. Yet as I ponder upon the many deaths I hath wrought, I realized I must do what it takes to bringeth this world to its knees ere we can thrust it into the light and maketh it the superior kingdom in the universe, coequal at the cost of mine people's liveth."
Seiryuu placed a hand on her hip. "Perhaps you're right. What's the point of ruling the kingdoms you've conquered if everyone's dead?"
Zhu Que eyed her coldly. "What other reason thou hath for coming here?"
Seiryuu laughed, taking a seat on one of his arm rests and leaned against him playfully. "Dear brother, I'm here to help you with your siege. Consider it as gratitude for killing our treacherous sister in Joseon."
Before Zhu Que could question her further, Seiryuu lifted her hand and made a beckoning gesture. The next he knew, ice crystals formulate before them, shaping themselves into a person. Kenji Kishimoto smiled wickedly as he bowed to both Celestial Warriors.
Zhu Que was not amused, holding up his blade and pointed at Kenji dangerously. "What is Xuan Wu's servant doing hither? Speaketh or I'll kill thee right now!"
Kenji kept his cool. "I am merely here to serve you, my Lord."
"You dare mock me, boy?"
"Dear brother, this Kinomoto boy is willing to betray his own clan for our sakes!" Seiryuu laughed. "Come now, opportunity beckons and you'd be wise to seize it. This boy is cleverer than we give him credit for, even tricked a mermaid to empower himself."
"My Lord, if I may be so bold," Kenji said. "Despite the outcome in Joseon, you cannot deny the fact that I've succeeded in helping Xuan Wu in obtaining the crown. I subjected to clouding the thoughts of my betrothed and her foolish twin in order to do your biddings. They now believe their cousin Kimi and her friends to be on the side of evil."
"Yes, I was impressed at how they turned like cowardlings on the battlefield," Zhu Que replied sarcastically.
"What mere Lusterian mortal wouldn't retreat at the mere sight of you in your blazing fire-bird form?" Kenji countered. "But I've convinced them to believe my words and they will no doubt follow me until their vengeance is served and the Guardians are no more. But alas, Xuan Wu is now gone and while I had served under her, I have no knowledge of her attempt to betray the rest of you. Use me, Lord Zhu Que. I can help you with your siege on Annam."
Zhu Que scrutinized him. "Prey tell why must I consider thee? I have hundreds of thousands of soldiers and demons under mine fist. What more do thou have to offer me?"
"Oh, do listen to his plan, brother," Seiryuu smiled playfully. "It's a good one."
She gestured for him to continue and Kenji did. Once he was done, Zhu Que cannot deny that it was excellent. Perhaps this little runt would be useful.
"As you can see, my Lord, I can help you undermine this pathetic Tri-Ceremony of theirs, and the scapegoats will fall upon the Guardians. Everyone in the city will erupt into chaos and from there, they'll be at their weakest and that is when your army should strike."
"Careful with thy tongue, boy," Zhu Que. "The last general who didn't tread carefully had his head cleaved off by mine talisman. However, thy plan is with merit and it is thus thou art still breathing."
"Of course, your Greatness," Kenji said, bowing to him.
"For it to work, thou must approach Queen Tapasi and poison her mind," Zhu Que said. "Go! I shall call upon thee for inspection."
"As you wished, my Lord," Kenji smiled wickedly and bowed. His whole body crystallized into ice again and once it shattered, he was gone.
"Well, glad to be of some help, dear brother, but you really should come back with me to Hwang-Ryong's castle," Seiryuu grinned playfully like a Cheshire Cat. "He would like it if you drop by and give him your report."
Zhu Que said nothing. Instead he got up and walked towards the window to gaze at the jungle kingdom below him. "Me thinks an interface message should suffice. If not, then I'll has't thee deliver the news. Is that not wherefore our master and brother hath sent thee hither for? Now leave me, sister! I must plan for the siege."
Seiryuu frowned. How dare Zhu Que compare her to a lowly messenger servant? "Hmph, very well, brother," Seiryuu smirked, despite being really annoyed underneath. And with that, she disappeared in a swirl of wind.
Reappearing somewhere else, Seiryuu opened a holographic interface screen before her, calling her most trusted right hand admiral, Lady Kitsune.
"My Lady, how may I serve you?" said the White Fox spirit.
"Kitsune, I want you to keep an eye on my brother Zhu Que and those pesky Guardians," Seiryuu smiled sadistically as she played with her hair. "There's something he's hiding and I want to know what. Find it and report back to me. And if given the chance, kill anyone who stands in your way."
Kitsune bowed, a mischievous grin mirrored upon her lips. "As you wished."
Present day...
"Alright, we're all here and we're ready, Jade," Orube nodded once they teletransported back to their headquarters. "We're going to land in Huế, the capital of Annam. It'll be swarming with guards and civilians due to the Tri-Ceremony. It won't be easy to get to the palace."
"Can't you just open the portal directly inside?" Will suggested.
"And risked the Lusterians thinking we're spies or dark spirits in disguised like the last few times?" Taranee raised an eyebrow. "C'mon, Will. With the way national securities are down there, any unexpected appearances like that is going to guarantee a few spears pointed against our throats."
"Taranee's right," Orube nodded. "We'll just land close enough to the palace and fly in from there. Once the guards see us arriving, they'll be ready to receive us."
Kimi glanced at Irma, who still hasn't said a thing. "Irma, are you coming with us?"
Irma glared at her. "Of course, I am! What do you take me for? Like I'm going to let you hog all the glory."
"Irma, a word," Orube said, pulling Irma to the side. "I told you that you need to focus your mind and heart and you can't come if you're still battling with your inner demon."
Irma is annoyed and the dark voice within her is trying to fuel it. She's a fool. Tell her to drop dead and mind her own busi—
No! Irma thought defiantly, still having no idea where that strong side was coming from but she was glad it said something. Why don't you shut the hell up?
"I'm not walking away from this, Orube, ever!" Irma hissed. "I don't care what you say, and yeah, I'll admit that I've been having some issues lately…but you don't get to tell me what to do! Yami told me something last night and I'm going to have to find a way to get rid of what's wrong and frankly, I don't think staying at home is gonna help. You got that, Orube? I'm coming! Plus, you're going up against Zhu Que and his minions who are all itching to burn Lusteria to the ground! You'll need me to help douse the fire."
Orube scrutinized her carefully before sighing in defeat. "Do as you wish, but all the same, I advised to you to be careful and keep your head in the game."
"Well, it looks like we're ready," Hay Lin said. Turning to their mentor, she said, "Okay, you can open up a portal now."
"I'm coming with you," said the Jade Dragon unexpectedly.
Everyone blinked, too surprised to say anything at first.
"Wait, you're—" Will began, but Ngọc Long held up her hand to silence her.
"I'm coming with you. That is final," Ngọc Long said firmly in such a tone that none of them dared challenge her. "I cannot stand by and watch my husband try to burn our homeland to the ground. Although I am now a member of the Gemini Council, the duty to protect my people still stands."
"It would be a great help to have you on our side, but Ngọc Long, we're still up against thousands of enemies!" Cornelia pointed out.
Hay Lin nodded. "Against Byakko, we had all of those monks and Kimi's distant relatives and their small armies of rebels to help. As for our battle against Xuan Wu, we were just lucky!"
"We have more allies in the southern kingdom than you believe," Kimi noted.
"You mean our friends and those villagers we've met last time?" Will raised an eyebrow. "But Kimi, they're not exactly warriors."
"I wasn't thinking of the Annamites," Kimi smiled.
"Indeed, for we have many allies under the seas as well as in the mountains," said the Jade Dragon. The Guardians turned to their mentor in surprised. Before anyone could question her further, the Jade Dragon turned to open the sliding glass doors to the backyard. They soon found themselves starring at an ocean with the Southern Fire Kingdom of Annam in the distance. Jade turned to them and nodded, ushering them towards the portal. "Come, it is time."
Princess Huyền Trân had been eerily silent for days, even more so as her ladies-in-waiting helped to put on her wedding gown. They are dreading today as much as their princess was. Despite Huyền Trân's stoic expression, she would like nothing more to do than cry. She wanted to cry for the loss of her freedom and heart. But worse of all, she cried for sadness in her beloved's heart. But she can't cry. A princess cannot cry.
When an emissary from the kingdom of Champa demanded that she be married to its king, Huyền Trân knew her life was over. She doesn't love King Jaya and heard he has more concubines than offspring! She heard of his obsession with women, and doesn't wished to become his queen lest he tires of her as he is of his current wife. But Huyền Trân loved her people and must learn to forget her happiness to ensure their survival. This marriage will help stall the corrupt Celestial Warrior of Fire's Wrath and his approaching army. The two kingdoms of Annam and Champa are the last ones standing and they'll need to be united.
There was a sudden knock, followed by her brother, her father, and General Trần Khắc Chung.
"Dearest sister, you are the most beautiful princess bride anyone has ever seen," beamed Emperor Trần Anh Tông. "But please, look happy for today the kingdom celebrates your birthday, your wedding, and your coronation as the new Champa Queen."
"Brother, if you were but a woman like me, you would feel no more joy as I feel now," replied Huyền Trân.
"Daughter, be reasonable," the Retired Emperor said. "Noble women such as yourself are to be married politically, not for childish affections. King Jaya is annexing two large provinces to us and is willing to unite his army with ours against Zhu Que! Without your marriage to him, not only will we be unable to compete with the other four Elemental Kingdoms, but we will be the first to fall under the tyranny of a corrupt demigod! Your heart, soul, and body doesn't belong to yourself, but to the state of our nation!"
Huyền Trân nodded obediently. "Yes, Father. I understand."
The Retired Emperor was about to comfort her when General Chung cleared his throat. "Your Majesties, may I remind you that the arbitrator from Nihon is awaiting your appearances."
"Of course," Emperor Trần Anh Tông grunted in annoyance as he led his elderly father out. "What were those Kinomotos thinking? Sending us a mere boy as their representative? Are we not worthy enough to be graced by the Guardians themselves?"
"No doubt the Guardians are doing their own shares of fighting the Celestial Warriors. Whoever the Kinomotos sent us will suffice," his father replied.
"Hmph, the nerve of him to demand that I offer a nobleman from my court in marriage to his cousin in exchange for his role as arbitrator for the Tri-Ceremony," Trần Anh Tông scoffed. "I only agreed should he succeed and the Tri-Ceremony is completed without failure."
"You still have a lot to learn as Emperor, my son," his father scolded. Turning to his daughter, he said, "My dear, we'll let you finished with your preparations."
"General Chung! Stay here and guard my sister," the Emperor glanced at his childhood friend. "Leave nothing to chance. I will not have Zhu Que or any demonic spirits ruin this day!"
Trần Khắc Chung bowed respectfully. "I shall guard the princess with my life and make sure no ill befalls her today, Your Majesty. You have my word."
Huyền Trân waited for her brother and father to leave before turning to her ladies. "Leave us," she ordered. "I will be done shortly." Her ladies glanced at each other nervously, but did as they were told.
Once she was certain they were alone, Huyền Trân embraced her former betrothed, tears spilling from her brown eyes as she pressed her lips to his. The general tried to comfort her by returning her kiss.
"My love, do not despair," he said.
"How can I be happy, Chung?" Huyền Trân cried. "I was to be married to you but it seemed fate played a cruel hand! I care not that Jaya's a king. I thought my wedding would be happy, but now I feel as though a strong current has caught me, pulling me out into the sea…away from you."
Chung doesn't like seeing her like this. He sighed and took the princess' hands in his.
"My love, listen," he said gently. "I am forever grateful to your father for accepting me as a part of his court, and to your brother for being my best friend. Over the years I've come to know your family, I fell in love with you. When your brother saw this, and arranged our marriage, I couldn't be happier. But the pain of never seeing you again is excruciating! My love…" he got down on his knees, "At this moment, I would love nothing more than to ask you to run away with me! If anything, at least we would be together…"
Huyền Trân gasped, her eyes filled up with tears again.
"…But alas, I cannot! Forgive me but you understand why."
The princess nodded sadly. "There are too many stakes riding upon my marriage. Our world is under siege with the godlings," she said solemnly. "Our kingdom has grown as weak as Joseon. Without my marriage to King Jaya, Annam will continue to decline and will become the weakest of the Five Great Elemental Kingdoms. And without our combined force with the Champa armies, we will eventually fall under Zhu Que's tyranny.
"I do love you, Chung. But I am a princess and I must put my duty above my heart. If I don't marry King Jaya, Annam will suffer. How can I live with that conscious if I were to elope with you?"
Chung got up and they kissed passionately. He buried his face in her hair and tried to remember her beautiful scent of fresh mountain breeze. It reminded him of the many times he had to accompanied her during their long walks together. He'll cherish those days always.
Suddenly, the sound of drums echoed throughout the capital followed by the deafening cheer of the people. Her ladies-in-waiting came back in to tell her that they must hurry with her dressing. Huyền Trân glanced at Chung sadly. "I must part you for it is nearly time for my nuptial." The words nearly choked her as she fought back the tears.
Chung clasped the princess' hands in his one last time before he must leave her. "No matter how large the ocean is or how large the mountains rose, your heart will always reach me."
There was a knock on the sliding door to their guest quarters, alerting Kiyomi and Kazumi.
"It's me," said Kenji before coming in. He embraced Kiyomi, but the feeling wasn't mutual. "Hello, my love. You're looking well. How was your trip?"
Kazumi scoffed and Kiyomi wasn't amused.
"You'd better have some good news because after that awful trek through the jungle, I am yearning to punch someone," Kazumi warned.
Kenji smirked in amusement. "Fret not, my dearies, for I have procured a wondrous diplomatic deal with the Annamite Emperor."
"Do tell," Kazumi said sarcastically. Kenji had enough of her critical behavior. It was time to teach her a lesson.
"Don't be so smug, girl," Kenji replied, smirking as he snapped his fingers. Suddenly, the entire room iced up, startling both girls. "I'm afraid I'm not the same weak water-wielder you once thought I was."
Kazumi glared daggered at him with defiance. "Don't flatter yourself. You're nothing but a half-baked water-wielder! Not even worthy enough to be considered a candidate for the role of Twin Guardians. You're fortunate enough that Lord Komei took you in from the slums! How the hell did you get—?"
Kenji frowned, and the next thing Kazumi knew, she was blasted by a powerful water drill that pinned her to the wall. Before she could get up, the water froze over, immobilizing her body, leaving only her soaked face free. Kiyomi gasped and tried to run to her sister, but found that she couldn't move. Looking down, she realized her feet were frozen in place.
"DON'T PATRONIZE ME!" Kenji roared. "You and the rest of the Kinomotos are the same! I've sweated blood for years, learning the art of politics! I've broke my bones and pushed my body to the limit learning how to wield water and to get to where I am now. Yet none of you considered me worthy enough! What does it take to satisfy you all?! You've always saw me as weak, but not anymore! I've found a way to make myself different than what I once was!"
He walked up to Kazumi and grabbed her face and to his satisfaction, saw for the very first time that she was afraid. "Poor, poor, little Kazumi. You thought you should be pitied because your precious Senji was killed? Well, let me tell you something, the only reason you're constantly belittling me is because you're envious of your twin! You're jealous because your future was taken away from you and now that you're a widow, you're just the disgraced leftover. All the while, your sister's untouched by shame and is to be married to me, the son of Chancellor Komei. For all your ridiculous notion of love and compassion for Senji, you're quick and eager to forget him—"
"You…know…nothing! Nothing of my feelings for Senji!" Kazumi spat.
"Funny, because right now, it seemed you're desperate to forget him by marrying someone else," Kenji laughed. "It's ironic because you're just like me! Our Kinomoto clansmen were also quick to treat you poorly just as they are to me. You want them to respect you and forget your unfortunate marriage with that Nobunaga boy, and that means remarrying someone of great nobility. So much for love! Despite all the crap I had to put up with from you, I offered to help you back in Joseon and here in Annam! And yet, you're still soooooo ungrateful!"
He slapped Kazumi hard, startling them both.
"Kenji, stop!" Kiyomi cried. "Release her, please!"
"No, my love. Your twin needs to hear this and so do you," Kenji silenced her before turning back to face Kazumi. "You're nothing now and it's only through marriage that you have any worth and standings in our hierarchy world. You need me, Kazumi, because I can secure you a marriage with a nobleman. Without me to speak on your behalf, you're just another unworthy candidate, no matter how fair you are. So, if I were you, I would be wise to be in my grace!"
Kazumi wanted to spit in his face, but his words pierced her deeply. He was right. She was sick of the Kinomoto elders treating her with such duplicity. To be born a Kinomto is a curse more than a blessing. Kazumi wanted a way out. Marrying someone of higher standing, someone close to the royal court would elevate her back to happiness. Kazumi glanced at her sister and realized that Kenji was right. She was jealous of Kiyomi because her future seemed bright. Despite being adopted, Kenji was on his way to become a very influential politician and being married to him is a guarantee of a life of respect and comfort.
Kazumi lowered her head in defeat. Satisfied, Kenji let her go, melting the ice that was pinning both sisters down. Kazumi sobbed and her sister ran to her side, trying to comfort her.
"Now, now, don't start that," Kenji rolled his eyes. "It's unbecoming of a Kinomoto such as yourself! You should be happy for Emperor Trần Anh Tông has agreed to let one of his cousins be your future husband. Isn't that wonderful? To be married to an Annamite prince? Oh, come now! I thought you would be more excited for this!"
"Kenji," Kiyomi glared. "We may have agreed to follow you as you seemed to know what you're doing, but at least show some sensitivity!"
"Sensitivity is for the weak, my love," Kenji reprimanded her. "The only way to get through in life is aggression and ambition."
Kiyomi said nothing, silently cursing herself to be married off to this duplicitous boy in the next few months. If anything, she would rather be married to a poor cobbler, but her fate has also been sealed by the Kinomoto elders.
Kenji sank back into a very exquisitely carved arm charm and laced his fingers together. "Now, this is an excellent opportunity for you, Kazumi. As I was saying before, the Annamite Emperor has agreed to let you marry one of his cousins, a young prince. He may not be the next in line for the throne, but he's proving to be an excellent tactician and is still currently attending Annam's prestigious military academy. Your marriage to him with strengthen our foreign relation with Annam in the future, of course.
"Now there is a catch: Emperor Trần Anh Tông only agreed as long as the Tri-Ceremony is a success. As his arbitrator, I must ensure the safety of the Champa royal delegates. However, knowing our dear cousin Kimi, she and her fellow corrupted Guardians from Earth will be presented."
The two sisters glowered at the mention of Kimi's name. They were fed up with her and her little friends. The thought of their recent battle in the jungle was infuriating.
"Why can't we just arrest them?" Kazumi demanded.
"We have no solid evidence against their treasonous alliance with the Celestial Warriors," Kenji smiled. "But don't fret, justice will hammer down upon them for their duplicitous actions soon enough. They won't risk exposing their true allegiance to Zhu Que in front of the Annamite royals, but no doubt that they'll arrive to sabotage the Tri-Ceremony. I'll try to keep them in line. And should anything happen, the truth with be exposed."
The two sisters agreed. Satisfied, Kenji added, "Good, now why don't you two go and make yourself presentable. The wedding and the coronation will begin in a few hours. I want the two of you to look presentable for the reception."
Unbeknownst to the two of them, Kenji had no real desire to help Kazumi find a new husband nor any intention to make the Tri-Ceremony a success. He already allied himself with the Celestial Warriors and conspired with Queen Tapasi to assassinate her husband. Kenji's lip curled wickedly, happy to know that he already planned an escape route back to Nihon once chaos breaks out. The three of them will watch Annam burn to the ground from the comfort of their home. Once Annam falls, he'll help Seiryuu take over Nihon and when it's gone, he'll destroy the Kinomoto clan and whoever survives will follow him. They'll have no choice but to accept him as the new sole Guardian.
The first thing Irma realized after going through the portal was that she was underwater! Irma knew her own element can't hurt her, but that didn't stop her from frantically splashing around. Surrounded by fish and emptiness of the sea, Irma panicked but her friends were nowhere to be found. Before she had the chance to call Taranee telepathically, two pairs of strong hands grabbed her. Irma coughed up sea water and found herself on the deck of an old fishing boat.
"Easy there," said Đức, his face grinning. "I understand if you're excited for the Tri-Ceremony, but you might not want to dive into the water unless you want to become a shark's lunch."
"Are you all right?" asked Đạo.
"I'm fine! I don't need your help!"
"Easy, Irma. They're just being helpful," said a voice behind her. Irma turned around and was relieved to find Will, who was at the bottom of the pile of Guardians. "Hey, guys! Great to see you again. So, Đạo, where's your sweetheart? We're just dying to meet her!"
"I was on my way to pick her up before you appeared out of the sky."
Glancing up, Irma could see the portal opening right above the boat. Hay Lin and Kimi fell through and landed on the others.
"Đạo! Đức! Boy, are we glad to see you again!" Hay Lin chirped.
"Same here, but…" Cornelia sighed, blowing a strand of her hair out of her face. "GET OFF OF ME!"
Everyone quickly scrambled to their feet, followed by Orube and their mentor landing before them. The two brothers gasped and quickly fell to their knees in the presence of the Jade Dragon.
"Jade Dragon, it's an honor to be graced by your presence!"
"Your hospitality is appreciated, but I'm afraid I cannot stay for idle chatter," Ngọc Long replied. "Where are your families?"
"Back in our village celebrating a few kilometers from here. We plan to join them in a few hours after we witness the Tri-Ceremony—"
"I'm afraid there won't be anything to celebrate for war is upon us," Ngọc Long interrupted. "I need you two to assist the Guardians by warning as many citizens you can in the city to leave! Zhu Que's army is approaching! The less casualty we will have, the better. Here," Ngọc Long gave them a small jade statuette of a dragon. "Take this as proof that you are my messengers."
The two brothers gasped in awe at such a beautiful stone. Idols that belonged to any Lusterian dragons are rare. To possess even one meant that you've been chosen by a mighty dragon to be its champion. Đạo and Đức lowered their heads deeply as they accepted it.
Turning to Orube, Ngọc Long said, "You know what you must do. Go to the Tri-Ceremony and protect the Annamite Royal family, especially the bride. My husband will stop at nothing to burn the entire city to the ground just to destroy the sacred bronze drums and seize power."
Orube nodded. "And what of you? You are not coming with us? We need you."
Ngọc Long shook her head. "I cannot fight my husband without an army of Wrath-induced demons and soldiers behind him, and neither can any of you. Kimi is right for we have allies here in Annam, and I must return make the trip below and seek their help. I shall rejoin you shortly."
Before Orube could question her further, Ngọc Long dove into the water, leaving them all confused.
"Okay, that was weird," Cornelia said.
Đạo quickly went to the bridge to turn on the engine of the boat. It let out several loud popping noises before it finally worked. Satisfied, Đạo turned the helm of the boat and steered them towards the palace.
"Are you sure you'll be okay?" Taranee asked.
Đức nodded. "We'll be fine. I am a fire-wielder and Đạo is good with metal."
"Safe journey, Guardians," Đạo said. "And may we all come out of this alive."
Orube and the Guardians bid their new friends farewell before taking off towards the palace (Kimi had to use her light magic to levitate Orube, of course).
As they flew through the air, they glanced down to see lots of ships crowding the docks. Hundreds of thousands of people came by boat and by land; some set up food carts, others were selling lanterns and masks. They could see the air was intoxicated with pure happiness and saturated with sounds of firecrackers.
"Rejoice in the anniversary of our dear princess' birth!" some cried, followed by more cheering.
"Guess we missed the birthday part of the Tri-Ceremony," Taranee said.
"Which means the wedding and the coronation is next," Kimi added seriously. "It is nearly noon, we must act."
"Agreed," Orube nodded. "C'mon, time for us to make an appearance. Kimi, take me down here."
Once they were in sight, people glanced up and gasped in surprise which caught the attention of the guards. Naturally, they readied their spears and swords at the sight of uninvited guests. Seeing this, Orube advised everyone to be cautious as they landed.
"Halt! Who goes there?!" General Chung demanded.
"Seriously? The wings and the fashionable clothes doesn't scream 'Guardians' to any of you?" Hay Lin rolled her eyes.
"Urgh, these guys don't know just how cute and important we are," Cornelia said, flipping her hair.
Irma shot her an annoyed look. "It's always about you and your looks, doesn't it?"
Orube turned and shushed them. Before she could turn her attention back towards the general, Kimi stepped forward and conjured up the Jewel of Life in the palm of her hand. "I am Kimi Watsuki, Guardian of Light, daughter of Kohaku Watsuki and Kotone Kinomoto, niece and adopted-daughter of Chancellor Komei of Nihon. If you doubt my words, then let the light from the Jewel of Life validate for me."
Seeing this, General Chung ordered his men to lower their weapons. Respectfully, he bowed to them.
"Light Guardian, we did not expect you," he began. "Please, forgive us but we've been weary of many attacks by Zhu Que's army these past few months. Due to the importance of this auspicious day, we must all remain vigilant."
Kimi nodded. "Understandable as Darkness tends to cloud the truth."
"Indeed," Orube agreed before introducing herself and the others.
Seeing that they're Guardians, General Chung and his men bowed ever more respectfully before guiding them towards the throne room. Upon meeting Emperor Trần Anh Tông, the ruler himself was just as ecstatic, and quickly got up from his throne and clasped Will's hands in his. Unlike Emperor Sheng-tsu of Zhong-guo, Trần Anh Tông appeared to be younger with dark brown hair and brown eyes.
"The stories are true! Thank the stars of Kandrakar, for we are blessed with five more Guardians! Your recent reputations have preceded you!"
"Thanks…um…you're not so bad yourself, I think…" Will replied.
"Had we known of your arrival earlier, I would have made certain that my subjects celebrated your presence!"
"Actually, we've met a few of them already," Hay Lin smiled, remembering the girl they've met in the highland village. "They even helped us when we got lost in the jungle. Although the laughing fruits were a bit much."
"You do us too much honor, Your Majesty," Kimi interrupted, her tone stoic as usual. "But may I be so bold as to ask why you weren't expecting us earlier?"
Trần Anh Tông and General Chung seemed perplexed. "Forgive us, Light Guardian, but we had expected you to come as an emissary from Nihon, but one of your relatives arrived instead. He informed us you were too occupied fighting the Celestial Warriors, and thus your elders have sent him instead to represent your entire nation."
Will noticed Kimi's right hand quietly clenching into a fist. Apparently, Kimi is pissed that her Kinomoto elders didn't bother to inform her of the change. However, she kept her frustration in check as she calmly replied, "I see. Perhaps this is for the best. Kandrakar have stationed me on Earth to better understand my fellow Guardians so that we may work together against the fallen demi-gods."
The Emperor smiled before a servant came in to inform him of the Champa King's arrival.
"I must meet with King Jaya about the wedding. As my future brother-in-law, he's keen on getting on with our political business. General Chung would be happy to show you our national security to better aide you against Zhu Que's army."
General Chung bowed before ushering the Guardians to follow him. Orube and Kimi asking him to give them a quick update on how many soldiers, elemental wielders, and weapons his army have compared to the smaller Champa army currently stationed just outside the city. Chung answered all of their questions as he took them to a tower with a magnificent view of the entire city. From there, they could see the docks where they last saw Đạo and Đức and hoped that the two brothers were able to get as many people out of the city as possible. To their relief, some people were starting to crowd the docks, getting on small boats to leave. But unfortunately, there were still thousands of civilians left.
"Please, come this way," Chung said, showing them into a large palace courtyard. To their astonishment, there were several giant bronze drums lined up side by side with their drummers polishing them.
"Are these…?" Kimi began, unable to hide her amazement.
"Indeed they are," Chung replied proudly. "These are the mystical bronze drums created by Zhu Que's father, the Vermillion Bird god, at the end of the Great Elemental War nearly ten thousand years ago. The Vermillion Bird embedded them with ancient magic in order to protect the monarchy of Annam. We use them during ceremonies such as coronations as well as wartime. With every beat, these drums can conjure a powerful barrier surrounding the palace."
"So basically you're fighting Wrath with the power of music?" Irma rolled her eyes.
"Do not take them lightly, Water Guardian," Chung chided her. "As powerful as Zhu Que is, even he cannot break through the barrier and force Emperor Trần Anh Tông to abdicate."
Irma huffed and crossed her arms. "Hmph! That must be some mighty spell," Irma said instead.
"Indeed," General Chung nodded.
Orube, Kimi, and Will glanced each other. There's something about this that they didn't like.
"General, are you not worried that Zhu Que will somehow find a way to break through this barrier?" Orube asked. "From what we've heard, Zhu Que's armies are much larger than Byakko! They have conquered your neighboring kingdoms, including Kampuchea, Thai, and Malaya!"
"Not to mention that your neighbor, the Kingdom of Muang Lao, just surrendered three days ago," Kimi added darkly. "General Chung, we've faced Byakko and Xuan Wu before, and both have come very close to seizing the monarchy of their respected kingdoms for themselves. Do not think that you can prevent Zhu Que from doing the same thing."
"I understand your concerns, Guardians," he assured them. "But the ancient binding spell prevents any usurpers, including the Celestial Warriors, from seizing the crowns of any of the five Elemental Kingdoms. Without the consent of our Emperor, the only way for Zhu Que to succeed is to get to Trần Anh Tông, who is safe within the magical barrier created by these drums."
Taranee frowned, spotting the flaw in this plan. "But wouldn't Zhu Que attack your drummers? Without them to beat these bronze instruments, you won't have a shield!"
"The drummers cannot be touch as they are stationed within the palace grounds, within the barrier," Chung replied. He pointed to a small group of fierce looking warriors in armors pacing back and forth, their eyes always on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary. "As a precaution, I've stationed some of my best warriors to guard the drummers and members of the Royal family to prevent any infiltrations. Now come, we must be ready for the…wedding."
The last word was said with pain, but the Guardians didn't mention this to him as they followed General Chung to the great hall for the remaining ceremonies.
Taranee decided to communicate with the others via her telepathic link. I'm not sure if I'm imagining it, but General Chung doesn't seem happy about the Tri-Ceremony.
Maybe he's protective and doesn't trust some foreign ruler marrying the princess of his kingdom, Hay Lin suggested.
Kimi sighed sadly and thought, It's more than that. General Chung and Princess Huyền Trân are lovers. Today is the day that he's going to lose the love of his life forever, and we have no choice but to make sure the wedding goes well if we want Annam to survive.
The others' eyes widened in shock, especially Will and Cornelia. They suddenly remembered what Đạo and Đức told them when they first met on their boat and realized that the handsome general before them is the same man mentioned in the story.
Chung noticed how quiet it was behind him and glanced over his shoulder to see the Guardians focusing on each other. "Guardians, are you all right? What troubles you?"
Will and her friends snapped back to normality. Kimi composed herself quickly and said, "It's nothing, General Chung. We were merely conversing telepathically and wondered who the Kinomoto elders have sent as your arbitrator for the Tri-Ceremony."
"Ah, a young Kinomoto who claimed to be a cousin of yours," Chung replied.
"You'll have to be more specific for I have over a thousand cousins from my mother's side," Kimi answered, causing Will and her friends to gapped.
"Sheesh, I hope that the rest of your cousins are not as crazy as those two sisters we've encountered in the jungle!" Irma spat. "If you haven't noticed, I still have a bone to pick with them!"
"The arbitrator the Kinomoto elders sent is a young man," Chung replied. "Not much older than you, perhaps. I believe he recently graduated and have been promoted into the rank of an ambassador. He did come with two young women with voices as smooth as the babbling brooks."
Kimi's glowered. "I pray that it's not that pathetic excuse of a water-wielder. He would do better than to invoke my ire."
"My, my, you're as hostile as ever, Kimi-chan!" said a familiar voice behind them. The Guardians quickly turned around to see Kenji Kishimoto smirking. "Never thought I would see you again so soon. And look, you've brought your little Earth friends."
The Guardians quickly went into a defensive position. Orube's hand quickly went for the hilt of her sword, ready to draw it out if necessary. Kimi glared daggered at Kenji, less than please to see him.
"What is the meaning of this?" Chung demanded. "If this is an internal conflict, I'll not have it! The Tri-Ceremony is an important and delicate event and we need all the help we could acquire from our foreign allies!"
Orube nodded, hold up one hand to assure him that this is just a little spat, hardly anything to concern about…for now.
"Kenji, you're the arbitrator?" Kimi demanded. "I would've expect our elders to be wiser than that."
Kenji feigned a hurt expression. "Dear little Kimi-chan. I see that your stay on Earth with these…uneducated rubes, have done little to improve your manners."
"And I see that graduation has done little to improve your patronizing views," Kimi retorted.
"Watch your tongue, cousin!" Kenji warned darkly. "Since you've left to live amongst these…Earthlings," he sneered at the word, causing the others to return his condescending glare with scornful gazes of their own, "I have worked tirelessly to hone my skills, both in magic and in politics. Do not take me for the boy you've encountered all those months ago, or else one day you'll regret it."
"Is that a threat?" Orube said darkly, towering over him. Orube hasn't forgotten her last conversation with Chancellor Komei. She doesn't trust Kenji. Her instinct was telling her that he knows of the spy working for the Celestial Warriors. Worse case, Kenji is affiliated with the spy.
"No, a warning," Kenji smirked, shrugging off her accusation. "After all you've been through, it's understandable that our elders didn't sent you. As the Guardian of Light, you have other duties. You should be grateful to have all the help! Now, why don't you put aside your tension and save it for Zhu Que? As much as we have our differences, I am here as a foreign diplomat to help General Chung and his revered ruler for the good of Annam."
"Hmph," Orube scoffed but relaxed her grip on her sword and ordered Will and her friends to settle down.
Irma was finding all of this hard to swallow. The voice inside her head laughed. He mocks you. Are you really going to take that? Or did you forget that his bride-to-be and her sister tried to destroy you? Then again, you have become quite pathetic lately.
"Greater good, my ass! Last I check, your fiancé and her sister attacked us in Joseon and in the jungles!"
Ha! Not much, but it could have been better!
Kenji didn't fidget at this accusation. Instead, he acted as though he was very surprised. "Did they? I had no idea. I wonder what could have gotten them into such a state?"
"They were convinced we were working on the Celestial Warriors' side! That's a load of crap!" Will spat. "They were compelled by dark magic!"
"By the gods, my poor Kiyomi! That's not like her. But her sister, I could understand. After all, her husband was killed a few years ago and she never quite got over it. I've heard Xuan Wu has the power to hypnotize and compel her victims," Kenji said nonchalantly. "After all, she could tap into your paranoia and compel you to do unspeakable things. Xuan Wu must have gotten to Kazumi and my darling Kiyomi when they paid me a visit to Joseon. That would explain why they hated you so much."
"But Xuan Wu is dead!" Cornelia objected. "Shouldn't her compulsion have worn off? Those two attacked us when we were stranded in the jungles of Annam!"
"A mere misunderstanding, I'm certain," Kenji said, holding up his hands in defense. Glancing at Kimi, he smiled slyly, "You know, Kazumi blames you for Seiji's death. You were there when he died after all."
Kimi said nothing, her eyes remained steely and cold. Orube and the other Guardians gasped, and even General Chung eyed Kimi with suspicion. They knew that Kazumi blamed Kimi for killing her husband, but since then, they brushed it off as paranoia coming from the pissed off light-wielder. Yet with Kenji mentioning it, could there have been a grain of truth to this accusation?
"Kimi, tell me you didn't kill Seiji," Orube said.
Kimi was quiet at first, but firmly replied. "I had no reason to. His death was tragic."
"Yes, but Kazumi doesn't believe that," Kenji shrugged. "The poor girl's confused, despite no longer under the thrall of Xuan Wu. You of all people should understand that grudges don't just disappear instantly. Her desire to hold on to it is simply misguided but understandable. Selfish of her, I know, since she's dragging my poor dear Kiyomi into it."
"Then do something about it!" Irma snapped. "After all, aren't you their keeper?"
"Hardly!" Kenji replied. "But if you must know, they are here in the capital with me and I don't believe they would take kindly to seeing your faces. I assure you that I've confined them in my guest quarters until after the reception and we can resolve this matter."
"Why don't I find this reassuring?" Taranee scoffed.
"Well, you'll just have to convince them otherwise. They'll be watching the two remaining ceremonies from the balcony of our quarters," Kenji replied. Turning his attention back to General Chung, he asked, "General, why don't you allow the Guardians to help with the ceremony. Aside from being vigilant, perhaps one of them could be the cup bearer?"
It's such a small task that General Chung could see no reason to decline this proposition. "Very well. Having a Guardian near our princess would indeed help in terms of extra security."
"Splendid!" Kenji grinned. Glancing at Kimi, he smiled mockily, "Isn't this wonderful, cousin? I believe the Earthlings would say that we're getting along quite swimmingly, wouldn't you agree?"
Kimi's steely eyes continued to burn with annoyance, but her posture remained poised and her tone betrayed no such hatred. "Indeed."
"Wait, what the heck are we supposed to do?" Irma asked.
Turning to her, Kenji smiled and it gave her the jeebies! "Ah, yes…the Water Guardian. You and I share the same elemental affiliation, which would mean that you'll do us the honor of being the cupbearer? All you have to do is bring forth the goblets to the bride and groom once they exchanged their vows."
Ha! They're treating you like a maid! The voice in Irma's head mocked with savage glee.
Before Irma could say anything, Orube shot her a warning glance before returning her attention to Kenji. "Irma would be honored."
Kimi scoffed. "Don't try anything foolish, cousin. I've known you all your life to know that you're up to something. If those wines were laced with poison, I will incinerate you with my deadly laser gazes!"
Kenji laughed, undaunted by her threat. "Dear cousin, what fanciful thoughts have the Earthlings filled your heads! Why would I spike the wines? You and everyone who's attending will be watching me and I have nothing to gain if I were to do it! Do you think I would be foolish enough to risk such a thing? But if you don't trust me, why don't you use your magic to scan the drinks before you hand it over to your friend?"
Kimi's gaze didn't leave him, but she nodded in agreement.
"Fine, whatever! I'll do it, just shut up and take us to the hall so we can get it over with," Irma interrupted.
"Oh, I like your spunk, Guardian!" Kenji smiled.
Worried, Kimi grabbed Irma by the arm and whispered. "Are you sure you can do this?"
"Seriously? You can't even trust me to do something as simple as bringing some drinks to the newlyweds?" Irma spat.
"I trust you, Irma, but I don't trust Kenji. I fear he may be using you as a scapegoat for something."
Irma yanked her arm away from Kimi. "I don't need your help. I can take care of myself!"
Ngọc Long swam as far and as fast as she could until she finally arrived in an underwater city. She hasn't been here in centuries, not since she was a hatchling. Days of her childhood swimming and playing about were distant memories. As Ngọc Long swam towards the palace, she could see her old neighbors going about in their lives. The houses and the streets were still the same and so were its inhabitants. No one seemed to have age a day! Time runs slower down here than on the surface. Mermaids, sea nymphs, and dragons have such long lives that a century is nothing more than a blink of an eye to them! The guards recognized her and let her through.
The palace was gleaming brilliantly. The whole thing was made of corals, mother of pearls, and precious underwater crystals. Its luster is shown in the light from the many lava lamps floating about. As Ngọc Long swam through the hall towards the throne room, she noticed that there was something different: a foreign army from the Sea of Nihon were in the courtyard.
"Queen Umi must be here," Ngọc Long noted. Apparently, Chancellor Komei must have asked the mermaid queen from Nihon to assist the merfolks of Annam.
"Sister! You've returned home!" exclaimed a familiar voice.
"Quang!" Ngọc Long beamed, and embraced her brother. "Littler brother! You've been promoted? It fills my heart with pride to see the Crimson Dragon as Royal Navy Admiral!"
"It's been too long! Sister, what brings you here?" His face turned serious. "Does it have to do with the upcoming siege?"
Jade's face turned somber. "I need to speak with Lạc Long Quân."
The Crimson Dragon nodded and gestured for her to follow him. "Come, the king is inside."
He opened the coral-crystal doors into the throne room. There the great ruler of the Eastern Sea of Annam sat on his throne, majestic and beautiful, his armor glistening in the light. The throne was carved of the most beautiful gold corals and pearls, surrounded by a giant statue of a golden sea dragon, its eyes made of black pearls. There sat the great Dragon Sea King, Lạc Long Quân.
Lạc Long Quân was speaking to Queen Umi and deciding whether or not they should mobilize their armies to assist the surface dwellers when he noticed his admiral swimming in with someone familiar.
"Lady Ngọc Long! It's been centuries! What an honor it is too see you again in my kingdom!"
"Jade Dragon," Queen Umi acknowledged her. "Chancellor Komei spoke highly of you."
Jade bowed respectfully to them both before turning to face the Dragon Sea King. "As does yours."
"Ngọc Long, what beckons you to return to my halls after so many centuries?" Lạc Long Quân asked kindly.
"I've only wished my homecoming had come at a more peaceful time," the Jade Dragon replied, shaking her head in shame. "I've come to ask you and Queen Umi for your help! War is upon our doorsteps for the Celestial Warrior of Fire had already amassed his great army to soon lay siege upon the Tri-Ceremony! Father, I've come to implore you for your help to help me fight against my husband."
Lạc Long Quân's eyes darkened. "That blasted son-in-law of mine! Daughter, please join us in our war council meeting! There is much to discuss!"
For a royal wedding, things were getting really intense. It started off well, a crowd of nobles from both Champa and Annam watching the whole procession with great anticipation. Irma and her friends were quickly introduced to the Champa King Jaya II, his previous queen, Tapasi, and their teenage son, Crown Prince Jaya IV.
"I hoped your presences here will ensure the success of my marriage to the young princess," King Jaya beamed with excitement before returning his attention to Emperor Trần Anh Tông.
Orube and Kimi were polite to respond him, but Irma noticed that Kimi discreetly glanced at Tapasi and her son as they silently conversed with Kenji. She wasn't the only one as an Annamite noblewoman with white strands in her hair seemed interested in whatever Kenji and the Guardians are doing. Irma guessed she's probably excited to see foreigners and alien Guardians that she's getting jumpy.
I don't like this, Kimi thought. Those people are up to something. I see it in their auras. Tapasi would never agree to her husband marrying Princess Huyền Trân.
Keep your eyes on them, Orube ordered. This entire marriage reeks of something ominous.
Orube ordered Will, Cornelia, Kimi, and Irma to stand by the alter while she, Taranee, and Hay Lin silently walked around to monitor the entire hall. Soon, the sound of beating drums took over and to the Guardians' amazement, a beautiful dome of pure white light slowly appeared over the great palace. The crowds outside cheered joyously.
Everyone in the hall clapped as they watched the Retired Emperor leading his daughter down the aisle. Her face was covered by a translucent red veal, matching her exquisite red silk gown, embroidered with gold patterns of firebirds. General Chung gasped, his heart sang with joy to see his beloved princess so beautiful on her wedding day, but it cried to know that she wouldn't be married to him. Princess Huyền Trân tried not to look at Chung's face for fear she might hesitate in her duty to her nation. Instead, she kept her face low and stoic as her father gave her hand away to King Jaya to hold.
"Citizens of Annam and guests from Champa," Emperor Trần Anh Tông bellowed, raising his hands to calm down the cheering crowd. "We are gathered here today to witness the marriage of my sister and our beloved princess, Huyền Trân, to the exalted ruler of our southern brothers, King Jaya Sinhavarman III! In years' past, both kingdoms have united to repel the nomadic Mongo savages of the north who have tried to conquer us! Since then, both Annam and Champa have grown closer and now it is time for us to grow closer in times of this great Darkness! We are the people of the Southern Fire Kingdom of Annam, and no Darkness shall smite the light of our fire!"
The crowd cheered wildly. The Emperor turned his attention towards the bride and groom and began to recite the proper blessings. The bride and groom finished their vows and the Emperor glanced at Irma.
"May we have the Water Guardian bring forth the goblets, please?" he asked.
Kenji nodded and passed the tray with two crystal goblets to Kimi. Using her light magic, Kimi's eyes glowed white as she tried to sense any sort of poison or dark magic laced into the wine. She sensed nothing. There was nothing wrong with the wine. Kenji smirked at her.
"Now do you believe me, cousin?" Kenji whispered.
"Light Guardian," General Chung whispered. "Are the wines safe?"
Kimi nodded and reluctantly handed them to Irma. Irma grabbed the trays and Kimi's voice rang in her head. I trust you.
Irma blinked, a small part of her wanted to smile because she knew Kimi was being genuine. For a short moment, the dark voice was gone and she felt like herself.
Irma quickly handed the goblets to Jaya and Huyền Trân who then exchanged it with one another.
"Once you've drunk the wine, the marriage is complete," Emperor Trần Anh Tông exclaimed.
The bride and groom intertwined their arms and began to drink from their goblets. Once they were done, the entire hall clapped, followed by loud cheering from the citizens who had been waiting outside. The applaud lasted for several minutes as King Jaya guided his new bride to the balcony, his hand holding hers while he waved to everyone.
"We are now united!" King Jaya beamed proudly. "Now let us continue the Tri-Ceremony where my new bride shall be crown Queen Parameswari of Champa!"
The crowd cheered. Huyền Trân glanced back to see her beloved Chung unable to look at her now that she is forever lost to someone else.
Looks like we have nothing to worry about, Will said. But just as she said it, something went terribly wrong.
King Jaya was still talking when suddenly he stopped. His eyes widened as he recoiled back. Letting go of his new wife's hand, he reached for his throat.
"My King?" Huyền Trân asked.
Jaya tried to say something, but he couldn't. He couldn't breathe! To everyone's horror, blood began to trickle down from his mouth.
"Your Majesty!" someone cried.
Jaya choked and coughed violently. Suddenly, blood poured from his mouth and he collapsed onto the floor. His body went into a seizure, thrashing violently.
"Husband!" Tapasi cried as she and her son rushed to his side.
"Father! What's wrong?"
"By the light of Kandrakar! What is going on?!" Emperor Trần Anh Tông cried.
Orube tried to rush to the king's side when her acute hearing kicked in. Someone was leaving the hall. Orube glanced quickly in time to see Kenji's robes disappearing around the corner. She cursed herself and followed him.
"Out of my way!" General Chung cried, pushing the onlookers to get to the Champa King. He tried to feel a pulse from the king's chest and wrist. But realized there were none. "He's dead."
Tapasi screamed and the entire hall burst into cries of disbelief.
"How could this have happened?!" The young prince demanded. "My father was fine a moment ago!" Glancing at Kimi, he spat, "You said there wasn't anything in the wine!"
"There wasn't!" Kimi assured him.
"YOU LIE!" Cried the prince.
Tapasi glanced at the goblet and picked it up. She then glared at Irma and suddenly, the tone in her voice was cold. "There are magical ice shards in the wine!"
Suddenly, everyone's eyes were on Irma. The Annamites were confused while the Champas were furious.
Chung glanced at Irma in disbelief. "Water Guardian, please tell me you didn't do this?"
"You think I did this?!" Irma cried defensively.
"Who else but the Guardian of Water who could manipulate the liquids into ice shards to shred his throat?!" Crown Prince Jaya screamed.
"WITCH! MURDERER!" Tapasi cried, throwing the goblet at Irma. She spotted Princess Huyền Trân still standing by her husband's corpse, still in shock. Furiously, she pointed at her accusingly. "YOU WERE IN ON THIS, WEREN'T YOU?! YOU COULDN'T MARRY YOUR PRECISIOUS LOVER SO YOU'VE CONSPIRED WITH THE WATER GUARDIAN TO KILL OUR KING! YOU TWO MUST HAVE SHREDDED HIS THROAT WITH ICE SHARDS TO BE RID OF HIM!"
"Traitor!" someone cried.
"This is heresy! Our beloved princess wouldn't do this!"
"Damn you, Annamites! Damn you all to hell!"
"No! I didn't! I wouldn't!" Huyền Trân cried desperately. But the Champa people would not listen as they came closer.
"Silence! My father is dead and now I am King!" cried the teenage prince. "In my country, we have a sacred tradition called sati where the wife must show her loyalty by being cremated alive should her husband pass away! You are officially the new queen of Champa when you made your vows and married my father. But since my father is dead, you must die by fire!"
"WHAT?!" Emperor Trần Anh Tông cried. "I will not have it! Why should my sister die when your mother gets to live?!"
"My mother is no longer my father's wife when he married that Annamite bitch!" King Jaya IV spat. "Guards! Seize her!"
"NO!" General Chung cried, drawing his sword out to defend his love. "You will not touch her!"
Kimi and the other Guardians quickly rushed towards Chung's side. The young King Jaya IV's eyes darkened and his mother glared at them with more venom than anyone could bare.
"How dare you dishonor my country?!" Jaya cried. "You've made fools of us! Huyền Trân will die by our tradition or else?!"
"Or else what?!" Will demanded.
Suddenly, the entire palace shook and the people screamed. Everyone looked outside to see a huge army of demons, murderers, and corrupted humans appearing from the mountains. Above them, a giant fiery bird flew in and gave a deafening screech. Everyone tried to cover their ears as Zhu Que's demonic voice boomed in the air.
"AND SO IT HAS BEGUN! MINE REIGN IS IMMINENT! SURRENDER THYSELVES TO ME OR DIE!"
Cries of terror echoed throughout the city as citizens ran for their lives. Zhu Que's army laughed and cheered as they rushed in into the city, laying waste to anyone who was foolish enough to stand in their way. Agni bellowed, ordering his fellow fire demons to attack the magical shield surrounding the palace.
King Jaya IV gave a look of horror before his eyes fell upon the Annamite Emperor and the Guardians. "YOU DID THIS! YOU TRICKED US BY COMING HERE SO THAT YOU CAN KILL US ALL!"
Before anyone realized it, Jaya grabbed his dead father's ceremonial sword and ran towards Princess Huyền Trân.
"DIE!" he screamed.
Just when things couldn't get any worse, the shield suddenly shattered into pieces and they realized that hope is gone.
To be continued…
Sorry for taking so long. I swear, I must have edit and rewrote this chapter more than ten times before I was finally satisfied with the result. This is perhaps one of the hardest chapters to write as of yet. I knew how the story would happen, but putting the write words and sentences together in order to describe it all is another matter. This chapter is so long that I'll have no choice but it cut it up into four parts.
Cultural notes:
Remember the creation myth of Vietnam from an earlier chapter? The one where Lạc Long Quân, the sea dragon prince married the mountain nymph Âu Cơ and together they had a hundred children before each taking fifty to live separate lives on land and under the sea? I thought it would be interesting to have Ngọc Long be one of their 100 children!
Historically, the real King Jaya III of Champa didn't die like this. He and the real Princess Huyền Trân did marry and she moved down to Champa to live with him. But he died of natural causes a year later. And yes, according to tradition, she was supposed to be killed by being cremated alive. Her brother, the real Emperor Trần Anh Tông sent General Chung to Champa, pretending to attend the king's funeral but it was actually a rescue mission to bring the princess home.
Sati is an obsolete and barbaric funeral customs where a widow is to be cremated (burned) alive on her late husband's funeral pyre. This custom was practiced in Champa a long time ago, too.
Story Trivia: The magical dome made of pure light that protects the palace in this chapter was inspired by the giant barrier spell as seen in the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.
