"I see, so these villains had some sort of agenda. Which was the death of All Might."
"This 'Nomou' They had created, I have no doubt it was made to counter him in every way."
"Which Segway's into where the next part of my questions will lean towards."
'I don't have a good feeling about this' The lone teen thought to himself.
"On multiple occasions you have displayed a variety of abilities and techniques that do not align with your quirk on record. It is important that we have accurate data of you, for the school as well I'm sure."
"What Tsukauchi is trying to say is that it's doing no good for the teachers, having to guess what their student is capable of. It's also a matter of safety with the local enforcement."
'They would need to know how my quirk works accurately, on the basis that there's a possibility I would need to be subdued, I can't say I blame them. But at the same time, would it be smart to just give away all my secrets like that? I mean it's not like it would change anything anyway.'
After some silence on his part, thinking carefully to choose his words with guile, "My quirk isn't an emitter type, it's heteromorphic."
That made them both raise a brow. While it wasn't uncommon for quirks to be assessed over time, as more aspects of it become clear, it was rare for someone who looks like your average human to suddenly claim to be a mutant type.
"In what way?"
"I think if we wanted to be more precise, my quirk would be more accurately called 'Lich'."
A lich in fantasy folklore was a being, usually a mage or necromancer who gave their soul for power and eternal undeath. Not too far off from the reality of the situation.
"Are you saying your quirk makes you undead?"
"That's right, I'm completely immune to virtually any negative physical aspect to a human body. Poisons, venom, disease. I don't require sleep, and I'm completely above all other biological needs. I can regenerate from any injury, and I don't think I can even die through non magical means either."
"That's, that's incredible!"
"And your combat abilities?"
"I have a variety of abilities both magical and physical. Telekinesis, necromancy, enhanced physical speed and strength. Invisibility. But I'd say necromancy is my most powerful. I can take the body of any dead, be they human or not. And revive them, making them my loyal warrior."
The number one hero looked a little grim listening to that last part. An ability based on the dead? Did that mean all those humanoids he had were formally dead people?
"Sung, did you-"
"No, of course not." Already knowing what he was getting at. "I've had these shadows with me since I first had my quirk."
"He's telling the truth, but that isn't the problem here. Sung gathered too much attention onto himself in this last attack, and those villains are still out there."
"They won't be for long old friend, we'll find them." Simply relieved that the next inheritor of one for all wasn't a mass murdering psychopath.
"That's not the point, think about how this occurred. Their goal, the funds needed for this scale, and the fact that this Nomou seemingly had multiple quirks. I'm afraid you know what i'm getting at."
"You don't mean…"
"Yes. If he's involved, if there's even the slightest chance he could attain power over death itself. To revive former dead and gain their power."
"My god."
"What, who are you guys talking about?"
All Might walked over to the window and gave a hard stare at the outside world. Recalling memories he really wishes he left buried.
"All for one."
In the coming days, the teachers would have conference after conference discussing the information they've collected in the wake of the attack. Much of it surrounding this so-called Shigaraki Tomura, who Sung Jin-woo described as a lunatic man child. All hate and no focus. Much more of the talk in these meetings were on the Korean himself. Should he be allowed to continue at UA? After blatantly disregarding Aizawa's orders, getting into combat and severely injuring villains without a license, and lying about his quirks abilities, most students would be expelled on the spot. However, as with most debates, some politics can be played.
With the truth of his otherworldly power, and possible (still debated) immortality, many made the argument that the UA must take it upon itself to see him bloom into a proper pro hero. All Might and Tsukauchi brought up the possibility of his old nemesis being at play somehow, meaning that keeping Jin-woo within the school was also a safety precaution against any cataclysmic scenarios. Such as the most powerful and evil villain in Japanese history becoming an immortal Lich.
But while all the adults stressed themselves over how to approach these details, the kids received some welcome, if unexpected news.
"The UA sports festival!?"
"But isn't it a bit much? We just had an attack!"
Aizawa, who showed up to work looking like a mummy, scoffed at the classes confusion.
"We need this. If we show our tummies, it will be as if the villains really got to us with one measly attack. Having the festival go without a hitch will bring back some normalcy, and confidence in our security. Speaking of which, there's going to be five times the amount of police presence. So don't worry, focus on this, because the sports festival is the greatest opportunity you're going to get to show off what you can do."
The shadow lord listened in with some interest. He's watched prior sports festivals, they basically replaced something called the Olympics in Japan, whatever the hell an Olympics is. Essentially the sports festival was a way for top hero agencies to scout out the next best talent. Filled with events and challenges of varied difficulty. The top three students are made into small time celebrities.
After doing some recon around the school, he's been in a bothersome mood. Why would they consider expulsion? He literally saved dozens of students, and two pro heroes. He missed the time when power and action was appreciated. Nation level hunters would tell their own government off and they were heeded. Here, even top heroes bend at the knee to avoid a slap on the wrist from the hero commission.
This mood is why he looked rather bored despite the news. Sure, inside he was sure it would be fun to win the festival and make some waves, but at what point did he have to think, what is the point?
"Did you have something you wanted to share Jin-woo?"
"No sensei."
"Pay attention...don't think I forgot what you did for me. But don't do something reckless like that again."
'Well at least he kinda said thanks'
The students murmured to themselves a bit, as if he didn't have the perception to hear everything for miles. Although he rarely ever actually used it that far. After the attack, it cemented what many in his class rumored about since the beginning. An all powerful quirk, a personal undying army.
Though it seemed things were moving in the right direction within the students, with the news of the festival, the majority of the class displayed nothing but vigor to take the top spot, despite what they might have been up against.
After class, he was on his way to his usual spot with Iida and Uraraka, when she stopped him for a second.
"Hey, I uh, I wanted to ask you something."
"What's up?"
"I'm not trying to play to your ego or anything, but yeah you're so much stronger than the average pro. Though, you've never spoken to us about why you wanna be a hero. At first, i'll admit a part of me might have bought into the idea the rest of the class made up, that you were just a hero for fun, or that you were bored and wanted something to do with your quirk."
That wasn't entirely wrong. If he really wanted to make a truly peaceful world, he would go all out in some training arc for a few years, then go around the world like a conqueror, doing things the good old fashioned way, through indomitable force. Although he was sure he would be fighting more than villains if he ever decided to go that route.
"But then I remember your face on that day, in the entrance exam, or when you saw our teacher getting pummeled. I can tell, even if you are doing this fun, I know a part of you really cares for the people around you. Even if you don't always show it. That's why I wanted to ask why you decided to be a hero in the first place."
"Well, to tell you the truth, I didn't always want to be a hero per say. And I still don't know how much I buy into the idea of the greater good. I guess, in a way, I just don't like losing."
That caused their third to jump into action like a crusader.
"Hm? That seems rather vague. A hallmark of all aspiring heroes should be their answer to the 'why' of things, their reason for donning their mask and taking the torch against villainy!" Iida put forth, leaving little room for argument.
"AHAH! Found you Jin-woo!" Said the burly All Might, busting into the conversation from the side hall.
"Mind eating lunch with me?"
'What could this be about?'
While Uraraka's cooing over the cute looking symbol of peace continued, Iida only wondered further the purpose of their meeting. He could only imagine that he was receiving commendations from the number one hero, but it was probably more than that. While giving his reports on everything, that day, he swore he saw All might walk into Jin-woo's room.
"Hey Uraraka, what do you think his connection to All Might is?"
"Hmm, can't say for sure. Those villains wanted to kill All Might and he took care of them all, maybe he's just giving his thanks?"
"Someone of Sung Jin-woo's level, it wouldn't be outlandish to say that he could become something akin to a star pupil."
These words, didn't go unnoticed by a certain dual colored student nearby.
"Strange things have been happening kid. I've seen a lot, but even this has me stumped."
"How so?"
"My time limit, which is usually 3 hours, is growing. I can feel myself growing more comfortable as time goes on. Today I managed to stay in my muscle form for a continuous 4 hours, doing light hero work on the way here all the while."
"Is that not what you expected."
"It's the exact opposite. In fact, ever since you've taken one for all, i've felt my power come more easily. My returns aren't as bad as they used to be. Like if im suddenly getting healthier."
'It's no mystery, it must be a side effect of me attaining it'
"I told you about one for all. A power passed down from user to user. A theory I worked out for a while, is that it also holds a piece of the users soul as its passed down."
"You think my quirk is affecting the part of your soul housed within me?"
"Exactly. Whether its good or bad, we'll have to see what happens. On the upside, if this continues, I might be able to return to my good old days! If I can just get to 8 hours I could…" The symbol of peace breathed out, calming his nerves. "I'm sorry kid, i've just been out of my prime for years. I've accepted my inevitable retirement ever since this injury, having to sit down and accept that you have to put your life's work aside, it stings. And this, well this is the one bit of hope i've had in so long."
"You weren't 100% happy passing on your responsibilities, were you?"
"It's not that I have anything against helping make way for the next generation, ushering that new wave of heroes, the next symbol of peace. But...I do have debts to collect. I worked so hard, and gave so much of myself to become that symbol. To watch it wither away. All from a single moment of carelessness, how could I not wish to take it back. I don't know what will come of this little development, but if it continues the way it has been, maybe I won't have to retire as quickly as I thought after all."
Jin-woo smiled at him, a rarity at school. He wouldn't say he was all that particularly close to the top hero, but this whole situation almost reminded him of the old president. A man with power to stand atop his nation, wasted by age, a body past its prime. What he's seeing now is the hope to turn back the clocks.
"Is that all you wanted to talk about?"
"No, actually. There was something else. Something far more important."
'It must be about those three words he muttered in our last meeting. All for one. He didn't wanna talk about it back then, must be a touchy subject'
"The Sports festival is here, and I don't mean to take favorites, but you're the favorite to win. That doesn't mean you get to relax and coast your way there."
"Hm."
"'HM!? Pffft, listen young man. Let's not sugar coat things here, your persona isn't exactly fit for a symbol of peace as you are now."
"Wasn't it you who said to look at Endeavor?"
"Oy vey, strong and a smart mouth. Look, I'm not saying to act like my exact copy or anything, but there's more to being a hero than beating up the bad guys and acting cool. This sports festival will be bigger than ever, and eyes around the world will be on you. You need to tell the world 'I AM HERE!'. You need to assure the masses that you don't just have the muscle, but you have the drive and compassion to be a symbol of peace. If you clear each round without even the slightest resistance, that will get you somewhere, but do it while showing that there's more to you than an edgy, cold exterior and you'll get to the top."
The first few days, Jin-woo would leave school the old fashioned way, find a hidden area, then swap home. After the attack, he no longer cared about showing what his hand was, and usually teleported home the moment school was over. This time, however, a massive disruption grew outside the door. And he could already hear what the commotion was about.
"This is a declaration of war."
"Ah look what you've done Bakugo, you're making the entire school think we're jerks!"
"Shut up. The only thing that matters," Bakugo suddenly shot a glare towards his not so close childhood friend, "Is that I aim for the top."
He could feel a tinge of excitement, it was not just his class. Everyone was going to be here, everyone will fight for the right to call themselves number one. And he will be ready to trump every single last one of them.
