Note: Yo everyone, a bit of a wait as usual. I've been once again mostly working on my original web novel series, which takes a bit of a priority, but i'm also excited to continue this and I had some free time so here we go!
Like most big events, the Sports festival came and went rather quickly.
Sung Jin-woo spent his couple days off relaxing at home, and attempting to take his family out for a nice dinner. Although the festival did a great job at turning him into a celebrity as he expected. It reminded him a lot of his old life, and so he was already quite used to it.
As for his mother, it was a bit stressful having your son be the center of so much national attention. And yet she had to admit a great sense of pride that went along with it.
However, not everyone was enjoying their rest. The attack on Ingenium made news, which connected the dots on what happened at the tournament. Sung debated with himself for a while whether or not he should get involved, though after his battle against the villains at USJ, he decided to play it safe and not be too involved with matters outside the school.
And so at the very least he wondered if he should offer some words of encouragement. As the UA locker room cleared out of students putting away their umbrellas or coats, it left the two heroes in training alone.
"Iida,"
"Don't, Sung. It is okay. My brother is fine, I apologize for any worries you may have had for me or him, but it's fine now."
Jin-woo only nodded in response. Everything he just said was the exact opposite of how he felt. Though the Korean wasn't one to prod too hard at a time like this.
In class it seems like everyone had a similar experience in terms of the publicity. Some handling it better than others of course. Bakugo had a field day with all the interviews after the ceremony was over.
"Alright, quiet down. Today is a special day. You'll all be selecting your hero names today." Commanded their home room teacher, now free of his shackles that were the bandages.
Most of the class shot their arms up in excitement. Jin-woo could understand, in a world like this, your hero name is probably one of the most important thing about you, next to your power, and costume. It also allowed everyone to let their creative side shine.
"First, however, we have the matter of your pro draft picks. Based on your performances, it's a way for them to show that they have some form of interest in your career down the line. That doesn't mean it will stay that way though, so take this seriously."
With that explanation out, he stepped aside and let the class inspect the results. It was top heavy to say the least.
"Things are usually closer than this. But that's just the nature of things."
Sung Jin-woo: 5,321
Bakugo: 4,123
Todoroki: 3,618
"Man, they're in a different league!"
"Woah, this is all out of order! Bakugo was first place, and Todoroki wasn't even top three!"
"Guess Bakugo's tactics scared them off!"
"STUPID PROS!"
Todoroki guessed that regardless of being knocked out early, his skill and strength showings, and lineage was enough to get him far.
"Regardless, you'll all get a chance to work with the pros, take it as extra experience in the wake of the villain attack."
"That's where our hero names come in!"
"Well, they're not exactly permanent, but pick something you're proud of either way."
"Or else you'll regret it!" Said a new voice. "Because the name you pick now, will probably be what you get called forever!"
It was that same woman from before, with the scanty clothing and pretty much exposed breast. Adult or not, it was still completely awkward for the Korean.
She gave a little speech about their name choice, and gave the class a bit of time to decide. While some hadn't given it much thought before, and made something up from the top of their head, others came into this knowing exactly what they wanted.
Sung was part of the latter.
"Alright everyone, that's enough time. We can start with whoever is ready."
He watched as one by one, his class stepped up to the front and presented their name, usually with a small explanation for why they chose it, if it was something personal.
Shoto and Iida decided to go with "Shoto" and "Tenya" respectively. They both were going through some form of emotional turmoil, and since these names were temporary, it seemed like a good idea.
"Alright Sung, you're next."
Everyone in the class focused up to see just what the strongest among them was going to choose. Many of them whispered guesses to each other, each one expecting something that conveys darkness, like Tokoyami's name "Tsukuyomi".
When he got to the front, he decided to give a small story beforehand. He felt it was appropriate, given the circumstance.
"I have a bit of a…mythological tale to give, if you don't mind. Long, long ago, there existed light, darkness, and an unending war between them. After learning that they were pawns in this war, the forces of light rebelled against their creator. Except one. This loyal warrior of light fought his own brothers till death."
"Woahhh."
"I've never heard of any mythos like this before."
"However, this was not the end. You see this lone warrior, was specifically chosen. He was chosen to be something more than a force of light, and more than a demon of darkness. He was reborn of his own withering ashes, and became the King of the dead. And with his power, he would go on to search for meaning, an answer for his own quest for purpose, on both sides of the war. Until he found his answer, in the shape of a weak, timid boy. And through this boy he bestowed not only power, but trust that some day he would be the end to the never ending war."
He then flipped his board around for all to see.
"That king's name, was Ashborn."
After name picking wrapped itself up, it then became time to look over their options for internships. Those who didn't get a single offer, have a generalized list of 40 to choose from. And it wasn't something to rush, as internships don't begin until next week. However for the newly christened "Ashborn", he hit his answer instantly.
'Endeavor Agency, Genius Office, Shinra Electric, Hawk's Agency. I don't particularly want to join any of these…'
It wasn't a surprise, these gave the exact feeling as the guilds back in his old world. They were plentiful and proud, with the top agencies essentially ruling the nation in a way, setting up a monopoly on crime fighting in their area. And just like last time, he wasn't into the idea of just being a side kick to another agency.
He smiled a bit at the thought. Iida mentioned it once, and it was going to happen either way, but now he was sure.
'I'm making my own agency, and I'll make it the number one in the world'
He was broken from his internal plotting by a familiar voice, though in an emotion he wasn't used to.
"Young man! A word!"
"All Might, you okay?"
"C-come with me." The mountain of muscle quivered with every step.
'This has got to be good'
"I have another draft for you."
The monarch frowned a little, he already had over five thousand of them.
"I think I have enough to look through for now."
"You don't understand kid, this one is different. His name is Gran Torino, my former trainer!"
That got him listening.
"I see, this must be a powerful hero then."
"Well, he retired long ago, but he knows my secret and the deal with one for all. God, did he draft you because he knows I haven't been actually training you much? W-well whatever the case, just take my advice and see him."
'For someone to have All Might quaking in his boots like this, even I'm curious'
A week has passed, internships begin today.
Jin-woo and the rest of his class waited at the train station for their final send off. Everyone more than excited as they shared their choices, it was gonna be their first time truly working side by side with professionals, possibly even fighting on the front lines.
But with the ability to sense negative emotions, it was easy to see through a façade.
"Iida, I know I don't extend myself much, but if you ever need anything I'm here."
The brother of Ingenium simply turned around, and had this hollow friendliness on his face.
"Sure."
When he turned his back, the only emotion filling him was something Jin-woo could sense in a heartbeat. It was pure, seething blood lust. All towards a single being.
'It doesn't take a genius to know what's going on. I better keep a bookmark just in case'
A creeping shadow made its way over to the troubled youth, blending in without being noticed. Not like he had any plans to blow the lid on a revenge story. Being the king of the dead and all, he couldn't care less about a fellow student killing to avenge family, he would do the same without hesitation. Hell, he already sorta did. However if the stories on this hero killer were to be believed, there's no sense in leaving him without aid. While at the same time giving himself an avenue for a chance to face off against a dangerous foe.
He could only hope is own internship brings him to exciting venues.
'What a dump'
He wasn't wrong. In the end he decided to go with All Might's suggestion to work with his old teacher. Maybe he would know something about one for all that he's missing. Either the reason it's not working properly, or what the connection with him and All Might is caused by. However even if there's no answers, it was better in his eyes than working with some massive agency who just sees him as a tool to get ahead.
Sending a small squad of shadows to stealthily check the entire building, it truly was just a single old man in there, carrying a plate of food.
"Hello?" The door was unlocked, and what awaited him inside was the awkward sight of that old man fallen over on said food.
'There's no mistaking it though, I can sense a solid power. He's definitely no joke'
"Do you need help getting up?"
"Agh! I'm up! Man to fall on my plate of ketchup and sausage like that, how clumsy! Wait, who are you!?"
"You sent that draft for me, I'm Sung Jin-woo."
"...Who!?"
"Heir to one for all."
"Toshinori!"
'If i'm not mistaken, that's-'
"Man i'm hungry."
"..." Jin-woo pulled out his phone, deciding to send a text to All Might about what to do next. At least he never had to see old man Gunhee in this state.
"Fire off an attack. I want to see your one for all. I need to know how well you can control it."
The monarch nearly smiled. 'Almost had me fooled'
Without any hesitation, he activated one for all, its use visualized as an array of black lightning generated from his body. However the problem with this form never seemed to fix itself.
'Using one for all is still a downgrade in physical strength. Something is limiting my ability to draw out everything inside'
Weakness aside, he reeled back his arm and let loose a right hook, only for it to be easily evaded at the last moment.
'He took my back!'
This Gran Torino moved with the agility of a pinball. Bouncing off walls with amazing speed, never staying in one spot for too long.
Before the retired hero could plant his foot in the necromancers back, Jin-woo switched back to his strength and caught the outstretched limb in his hand.
"Tch, not bad. But it's just as I suspected. You can't actually use one for all correctly, can you?"
Putting the old man down, he once again switched back to ofa.
"I can use it just fine, but using it to the extent that All Might does isn't working."
Poking and prodding around at the Koreans body, Torino checked him head to toe.
"Physically there shouldn't be anything wrong. But for some reason you're only putting out about 1% of one for all's power."
"Only 1% of All Might's power huh."
"No, not All Might. One for all. As of now, your max would probably be even stronger than his."
"Then if I could get it to work-"
"Let's not get hasty. I'm not so sure this is something you can fix. Not now anyway."
"What do you mean?"
"I've never seen this before, it must have something to do with the spiritual aspect of the power itself. Every time it's passed down, a bit of their soul is passed to the next person as well. If something is limiting your power output, I highly doubt any amount of physical training is gonna get you anywhere."
"Then I guess I have no choice but to wait."
'I've been trying to reach whatever mindscape those new presences within me are holed up in, to no success. But it's like they can watch my every move from within. Maybe they don't exactly like the fact that their power was bestowed onto someone like me…'
Gran Torino cracked his knuckles to break the silence.
"That doesn't mean that you get a free pass for today. From what I've seen you're not too far from reaching Toshinori in your normal state. Prove me right!"
Jin-woo's eyes glowed blue as he took a ready stance. "Alright then."
Three days have passed, each one full of physical drills and sparring. Most of it was just to get as good an idea of just how powerful this successor was. For the first time in years, he hadn't managed to land a single good blow. The boy showed combat prowess akin to that of a veteran hero. Top class tactical planning, fighting instincts, martial skill. It was no wonder why his 'defeat' against that loud kid from before was so controversial. It was as if he was not only physically holding back against his teammates, but mentally allowing things he could easily shut down.
'One for all or not, this kid just might be the one we need to put an end to that man'
"Alright kid, I think I've had enough of getting my tired butt kicked around. How about we get on to the fun part, villain hunting!"
"How does that exactly work?" A weird question, but honest. Was he just gonna be patrolling around the streets? Or actively prowling around like Eraser head?
"Easy, with us in costume, we just need to station ourselves in a high density, high crime spot like Shibuya. Troubles are bound to happen, that's when we answer the call."
"In costume huh?" He wasn't exactly sure how to feel about that. He didn't recall ever strolling around in public without normal street wear.
"Don't get used to it. You can only do so while with me, since you're in an internship."
Shibuya meant going by train, something he loathed, public transportation. Though a bit of normalcy wasn't always bad. And he had something to look forward to, the idea of fighting all sorts of villains, his shadows have been restless lately, especially...right now as a matter of fact.
'Wait that feels like-'
"Gran Torino! Incoming!" he quickly blurted out.
With the nerves of a true veteran in the field, Torino braced hard as a massive winged creature dived into the train, opening a gaping hole onto the side.
"Stay here!" Taking off without a second thought, the old man grabbed the creature and launched himself far from the train.
"Kaisel." He said, completely ignoring the order he was given.
Like a bat in the night, the necromancer catapulted into the sky, coming to a stop to hover over Hosu city.
"Spread out, I want to know exactly what's happening."
At his command, hundreds of shadows raced into the dark alleys, beaming their information back to their master. One shadow he had planted earlier gave him a particularly interesting tidbit.
"So, guess Iida will have his fight after all."
Soon, several explosions went off within the city, and with the info gathered, it was clear as day. Hosu city was currently under siege by Nomous. Round two begins here.
"Arise."
