Survival Bella
"How is 'Survival Bella' any different than the one we just watched? We watched her survive an encounter with wolves, Laurent, and her own recklessness!" Had Rosalie been standing up, she would have been pacing. Seconds later she did just that.
"How about we sit down and watch? Maybe we'll get lucky and Bella's just on the show Survivor," Emmett said 'helpfully'. Rose snorted, but sat down nonetheless.
Finally, the vision began.
Bella was running through a forest during the day, but the blanket of leaves cast a shadow below. She could hardly see where her feet landed as she ran, and it was a miracle she hadn't yet tripped.
She stopped in a small clearing, leaning on a tree for support. Her left arm clutched her right arm just above her elbow, and her right hand was clamped firmly on her stomach. Beyond that, her shirt was stained in several different areas with blood. The blood on her shoulder was darker and fresher.
"God, what happened to her?" Emmett asked.
No one answered, they were too shocked at the state Bella was in. It was almost as bad as her injuries from James.
There's nowhere to hide, she thought. They're going to find me. I'll never escape. Despite her negative thoughts, she pulled herself off the tree and started across the clearing, only to freeze mid-step.
On the other side of the clearing stood a man in full body armor, which made him look huge. She could see at least two knives tucked safely away but still open enough for the man to reach them easily. The jobi nuts hung loosely in a bag that stuck just barely out of his pocket and she stiffened.
She knew just how much he preferred to keep her with him with those nuts. The hallucinogen they contain really worked in his favor. He'd force her to eat them so she'd be too tripped up to escape.
"I've never once heard of 'Jobi Nuts'. I know the name of everything that grows under the sun, but never once have I heard of nuts that contain a hallucinogen," Esme said.
"That is rather perplexing," Carlisle agreed.
Bella swallowed the bile that had risen in her throat at the sight of them. She refused to be taken again. She'd escape this man and his fellow grounders or she'd die trying.
Nervous glances were exchanged. The man was well-armed, and she was injured. Even if she wasn't injured, it wasn't hard to tell who would win in a fight if it came down to it.
But he didn't make a move to grab her, God knows it wouldn't be hard. He just stood on the opposite end, staring at her. Perhaps he knew she wouldn't run and had chosen to observe her from a distance.
It took her a moment, but she realized that he had been slowly reaching for an arrow. She backed up slowly. As if that would save me, she thought bitterly. Bella backed up until she hit something and froze once more. It was definitely not a tree, and there was nothing else for her to hit…
She slowly turned around to face the person she backed into. Her eyes widened comically and she drew in a sharp breath.
"Octavia?" she asked shakily, disbelief clear on her face.
The girl in question nodded and Bella's relief was palpable. That is until she realized that now they were both going to die. Octavia was going to die trying to save her. She couldn't let that happen.
Bella spun back around and began limping toward the armed man. She didn't get very far because an arm grabbed her and pulled her backwards. She let out a yelp of pain which sent the grounder into action.
In one swift motion, he had an arrow notched and trained directly over her heart.
"What's going on?" she whispered to the person behind her.
"Yes, I'd like to know that too," Jasper said.
"He wants to kill her. Whoever that man is wants to kill Bella. Why?" Alice pleaded for answers she knew she couldn't get.
"I don't know, darlin'. I don't know."
"We're here to rescue you. A few more minutes, though, and we would've been too late."
"We?"
"Yes, we," another voice spoke up, one that was all-too familiar. She spun around in shock, completely forgetting the arrow ready to pierce her flesh.
"Don't. Move," Bellamy hissed.
Her eyes widened when she caught sight of the others. Finn, Clarke, Bellamy, Octavia, heck even Raven had come to save her. If she weren't in impending danger, she was sure she'd have melted into goo on the spot.
"Who are all these people?" Rose asked.
"Yeah, she doesn't look much older than she is now. She can't have met so many new people in such a short amount of time," Emmett said.
"But apparently she did," Alice pouted, upset and a little bitter to think that Bella had made so many new friends and none of them were her.
Bella quickly figured out the reason why the grounder had made no move to grab her. Unbeknownst to her, there were five people standing behind her. A warrior such as himself would clearly be able to see the disadvantage. Six...okay, count Bella out - she's too injured - five to one were not good odds for the man.
She looked back to her friends and noticed that they each held their own weapon. Octavia had her sword, Bellamy and Clarke had a gun, and Finn wielded a small dagger. Raven had a large stick she used as support for her injured leg (thank you, Murphy) and held a much smaller, rather pathetic stick in her free hand. Better yet, call it a twig. Make that four to one. Still not good odds for the grounder.
Emmett burst out laughing. "What's a little...t-twig gonna do against a man the size of me?"
Rosalie raised a hand to whack him at the back of his head, but changed her mind and instead ruffled his hair. She, along with several others, sent a grateful smile his way for lightening the mood.
He still shied away, having expected the whack and was confused when he didn't feel the slight pain that he'd since become used to.
Since she now had her back to the enemy, she relied on her friend's facial expressions to try and guess what was happening.
It was a tense minute of silence where all Bella did was watch them carefully.
A small blip of hope rose in her, thinking that maybe he ran. Just as quickly as she thought that, her mind argued. Their pride won't let them back down.
She was distracted with her thoughts, and was startled when, in an instant, all weapons were drawn. Bellamy charged forward, gun raised. She heard the shots but was too focused on the arms surrounding her, supporting her. Octavia stood next to Clarke, so it was obvious she wans't the one holding her. Bella turned just enough to see the smug face of Finn Collins.
"We got him," he smiled.
Her eyes darted to the lump in the middle of the clearing.
"Go Bellamy!" Emmett cheered.
Edward let go of the breath he'd been holding, and Esme and Alice sighed in relief.
"Hey, vampire lover. Whad'dya say we head back to camp?" Finn asked.
"She told them about us?" Jasper asked in disbelief. He hadn't thought she'd be the type of person to do that. He might not have been close with her, but he had observed her emotions and they were all sincere.
"I knew it!" Rosalie sneered.
Bella visibly flinched. "Don't call me that. Please," she begged. "That happened a long time ago. It's in the past now." Her voice wavered, almost like she was trying to convince herself rather than him.
"Damn right, it's in the past. If they weren't already dead, I'd burn that Edward to ashes."
"We're dead?!" Alice screeched. Jasper put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Calm down, Finn. Sometimes I regret telling you."
"You only told me about those good-for-nothing Cullens because they're dead. It was years ago, yet you still struggle to say their names."
She swallowed. "It hasn't been years for me. I went to sleep only weeks after they left, and woke up over a hundred years later and felt the exact same. They died with the rest of the world. Lucky me," she said bitterly.
"Is anybody understanding this?" Esme asked. So many things weren't adding up. For instance, a hundred years? How could Bella be alive if she's still human?
Everyone shook their heads dumbly, even Carlisle.
Her mind flashed back to a somewhat simpler time.
"Bells, you can't do this anymore," Charlie said during breakfast.
She blinked and looked up at him. "Do what?"
"This...moping around. You can't wait around for them forever. You need to move on."
"Charlie had a conversation similar to this with the real Bella," Carlisle said.
"Bells, do you remember that program we signed you up for?"
"So this is where it switches from what actually happened to a potential future," Jasper thought aloud.
Bella nodded and Charlie continued. "You've been accepted."
For the first time in weeks, Bella felt something other than hopelessness and despair. She felt almost...giddy.
Charlie went on, oblivious to the sudden change in her mood. "As agreed, if it works, you'll be in cryo for a year." He suddenly choked on a sob. "Bells, I'm so proud of you."
Bella spent a week getting familiar with the process. She'd go to 'sleep' in the cryo-pod for a year. She wouldn't need to eat or go to the bathroom, she wouldn't even age.
"Do you think someone has created that in this world?" Emmett asked, oddly interested in the concept.
"I don't think so. This isn't something that anyone would be able to keep secret," Carlisle answered.
As always, things went wrong. The year she was supposed to spend in the pod turned into one hundred. She woke up in space, on the Ark.
Bella only managed to gather a small amount of information, but it was enough to piece together a probable theory.
One thing that was crystal clear was that the bombs ended the world. Taking that into account, she believed that she - or rather the pod itself - was sent into space to try and preserve human life.
It adds to that theory that the council only woke her up because they valued the technology, not her life. They woke her up just in time for her to be sent to the ground with the one hundred prisoners.
Of course, all of the prisoners were under the age of eighteen, seeing as how anyone older than that would be floated into space for the smallest of crimes.
"That's horrible!" Esme gasped. What kind of world had Bella been sent into?
It took a few weeks to get to the truth, but Clarke finally revealed the real reason why they were sent to the ground. The Ark was dying and they had been sent down to buy the Ark a few more months of air. The council's excuse was to see if the ground was survivable, because as far as they knew, Earth was a radiation-soaked planet.
The truth was that they couldn't care less about what happened to them. The upsetting but painful truth: they were sent down to die.
Ironic how she, a simple human, outlived vampires. The bombs that ended the world were the one thing they couldn't survive. Only Bella could survive the apocalypse and live a hundred years in space, only to be sent back down to the planet she had unknowingly escaped.
"That's how we died?" Alice whispered.
"At least we ended with a bang!" Emmett boomed.
This time Rosalie didn't hesitate when she smacked his head.
Bella shook her head, coming out of her memories. "Besides, they weren't all bad. It was," she swallowed. "Edward's choice. They're his family, why wouldn't they follow him?" Bella shook her head again and looked at the ground. "Although it's been so long, I still miss them. Even Rosalie, in a way."
Rose herself was shocked to hear Bella speak those words. After all that's happened to the human, she still missed them? Even me?
"I'd like to believe that they're still alive. But I know that's the hopeful but delusional part of me speaking. You've seen the satellite pictures, no one could have survived all that fire."
Finn nodded, smiling grimly. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder to keep her balanced as they walked behind Raven and Clarke toward camp. Octavia and Bellamy ran to catch up with them after they finished burying the body.
"Maybe when we get back, we can get you a cup of Monty's moonshine," Octavia said, throwing an arm over Bella's other shoulder.
She winced slightly and Octavia quickly moved her arm. "Sorry," she apologized. "It's easy to forget you're injured."
"It's fine." Bella looked ahead and focused her gaze on Clarke. "When we get back to camp, I'll have Clarke look at it."
"She's changed," Jasper commented.
"The old Bella would have ended with 'It's fine'. This new Bella, though…" Emmett trailed off.
Edward, who for the most part had been silent in an attempt to avoid angering his family as they were still upset from the first vision, spoke up. "She's taking care of herself. Getting an infection from a wound in the wilderness is surprisingly easy," he said.
Alice had all but forgotten his presence, and sent him a glare when all of her feelings came back to the surface. Rose couldn't stop herself from rolling her eyes. Everyone was still upset with him, including Carlisle and Esme.
Four Days Later
Bella was in a small tent hovering over a makeshift table and looking through a handful of papers.
After a few seconds of staring frustratedly at the documents, her eyes drifted to a lone photo. She reached over the table to pick it up.
"Hey dad," she said sadly. "The rest of the Ark came down yesterday. We've sent out small groups to scout the area, but so far, no luck." Bella leaned back on her log. "I don't think I can do this anymore." She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "We need those resources, and soon. Winter's fast approaching. It may not be as cold as it used to be before the bombs, but the temperature is already low enough."
She dropped the photo on the table and stood up. "Why- Why on earth did they send kids to die? I don't understand their laws, but they're kids! How- I just don't understand." Bella took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
She sat back down and continued looking through the papers. Underneath them all was a map, which she pulled out and put on top. "Mount Weather. That was the original destination. But there's a forest full of people and toxins that will kill us and the only way to get there is through. I- I'm at a loss." Bella glanced at the photo. "What do I do?"
"Does she actually expect him to answer?" Emmett asked.
"Emmett," Rosalie and Jasper grumbled.
"Mount Weather?" Esme asked.
Carlisle thought for a second before answering. "It's a government facility in Virginia."
Bella's face lit up. "It's not the only way," she muttered looking at the ceiling. With a sudden boost of morale, she jumped off her log and gathered the map and documents before exiting her tent.
"Raven!" she shouted as she neared the dropship.
"Hey, Bell," Raven said from her spot next to the radio. She messed with the frequencies for a few seconds before looking at her. "What's up?"
"Mount Weather."
"What about it? We can't get there because half of us will likely get killed on the trip."
Bella shook her head. "Not on foot, we can't." She smiled. "What if we go up?"
"We used all our fuel for the bombs on the bridge."
"Yeah, our fuel. The nearest crash site isn't even a mile away."
A smile overtook Raven's face as she snapped her fingers. "Tons of fuel. Bella, you are a genius."
Bella shook her head with a grin on her face, too happy to try to deny it.
"Who's still out?" Raven asked.
"Lincoln and Octavia, Bellamy, Monroe, Sterling, and Finn are hunting. They're supposed to be back within the hour."
Raven nodded and gestured to the large stick she'd been using as a crutch for the leg Murphy shot. Bella hastily took it off the wall and handed it to her. Raven nodded in thanks and Bella watched silently as she struggled to get up, forcing herself not to help.
"Poor girl," Esme said, frowning.
"That kind of lasting injury must've required surgery, but there is no one of that...specialty with that group. No medicine, no anesthesia. It would've been extremely painful," Carlisle said, impressed with the strength of the young woman on screen.
"It keeps saying some guy named 'Murphy' shot her. How'd they get guns?" Rosalie asked.
"Most of the people perished from the bombs and the radiation, but that doesn't mean that their belongings didn't. Bomb shelters are scattered all around the world. There are quite a few in Virginia alone," Carlisle explained.
If she tried, Raven would likely snap at her. They were alike in that way, unable to accept help when they needed it. Lord knows how many times Bella had tried to get up when the injuries she received during her capture were healing.
She sighed and watched Raven hobble out of the dropship before following her.
"That wall is quite impressive for a group of teenagers," Alice observed.
Jasper leaned his head on his hand. "Danger is a great motivator."
They only had to wait fifteen minutes before noise at the gate entrance caught their attention. The pair stood up and went to the gate where two 'guards' were stationed.
The guard that was in charge of opening and closing it looked to Bella and she nodded her assent.
Creaking loudly, the gate slowly swung open to reveal only two of the previous six from the hunting party.
Immediately, Bella felt a sense of dread settle in her stomach, similar to what she felt before Edward led her into that forest.
Edward cringed.
"What happened?" she demanded after seeing the state of the two.
"This can't be good," Jasper murmured.
Octavia and Lincoln were standing, not with food, but several cuts and open wounds. There was a gash on Lincon's head which could be seen clearly on his bald head, and he had a hand clutching his knee. Octavia had several scrapes and the only major wound was a long cut on her left arm.
By now, most of the delinquents had gathered at the gate.
"We were ambushed," Octavia answered. "We took two of theirs when we rescued Bella, so they took four of ours. We were left alive to send a message...from the Commander."
Several people gasped, including Bella.
"If we do not vacate this camp by dusk, her army will destroy us." Octavia gulped. "Leave or die."
The screen faded to black.
"What happened?" Alice and Edward asked at the same time; Alice because she wanted to see more, and Edward because he wanted- needed to know what happened to Bella.
"And it was just getting good!" Rose exclaimed.
I hope this better shows what I have planned for this story. The visions of Bella's future are really just her in a tv show, book, or movie. It'll make more sense if you've actually watched the show 'The 100'.
The next one will be 'The Vampire Diaries'.
Review if you wanna give me suggestions. :)
