Lena stared at Kara. It had been a full minute, she counted, since she declared her love for the superhero. Kara had yet to say anything. Lena was tempted to call Alex. Maybe there was something wrong with Kara?
Kara was speechless. For the first time in her life she truly had no idea what to say. It was weird considering how much she talked normally.
Minutes passed and the Ferris Wheel was moving again. Lena was starting to regret saying anything to Kara. She was starting to regret this entire trip. She was about to call Alex and have the DEO pick up Kara when Kara finally spoke. It was so quiet Lena barely heard her.
"You love me," Kara whispered. Lena nodded, afraid to say anything and ruin Kara's train of thought. Kara frowned. "I… how… when?"
"Ever since that day I told you I wanted to make a name for myself outside of my family name and you believed me," Lena answered. "You didn't know me, yet you defended me against your cousin. That meant more to me then you will ever know. Course I didn't realize you were Supergirl at the time but—"
Kara cut her off with a kiss. "I love you too," she said when she pulled away. "I don't know how I never noticed before. Your heartbeat always got faster when I was near you." Lena blushed. "You always protected me."
"And I always will," Lena promised.
Kara stared at Lena. "I am so dumb," she said with the shake of her head.
"You're not dumb," Lena said. "You have the weight of the world on your shoulders every day. It makes it hard to focus on your personal life when you're saving the world constantly."
Kara leaned against Lena. "I'm scared," she whispered. Lena turned her head to look at Kara. Lena's face fell. "No, not about us," Kara quickly assured her. "I'm scared my enemies will target you. I'm scared something will happen to you."
"Kara, I have enemies of my own that are trying to kill me," Lena reminded her. Kara tensed up. She didn't like the sound of that. "My point is Kara, I will be in danger no matter what. So why shouldn't I be happy?"
Kara looked into Lena's eyes. She looked for any sign of fear coming from Lena. She couldn't find any. Only love, the same look of love Lena always gave her but she never noticed. "Okay," Kara decided. "Okay. We can make it work." Kara touched the bracelet on Lena's wrist. "If anything happens, you have to hit the button. You have to call for me."
"I will," Lena promised.
They rode the Ferris Wheel a few more times before getting off. They walked past the many game stands, hand in hand. They were all closed now since it was past midnight. The pier was almost deserted. The only sounds that could be heard were the sounds of the waves.
"Is there anything you want to do before going back to our room?" Lena asked.
"Ice cream," Kara said immediately.
Lena checked her watch. "It's after midnight. Is there a place that is still open?"
"There's a place in Metropolis," Kara said. "Wait here."
Kara sped away before Lena could react. Kara flew so much Lena had forgotten that super speed was one of Kara's many powers. She remembered hearing stories about Superman back when he was the Red-Blue Blur. He had moved so fast all they could see was the red and blue of his jacket and shirt. He never flew back then. Lena wondered why. Maybe it was his fear of heights? Maybe he couldn't fly? It didn't seem right. Kara was able to fly shortly after coming to Earth, once her body soaked up enough radiation from the yellow sun.
Kara returned midway through Lena's internal debate. She was holding two ice cream cones. "Morty's Ice Cream, open 24 hours a day," Kara said with a grin.
Lena took the offered ice cream cone. Coffee ice cream, her favorite. "You really ran all the way to Metropolis?" They made their way back to their hotel room.
"I wanted ice cream," Kara said with a shrug.
"Why run when you can fly?" Lena questioned.
"I didn't bring my suit," Kara answered. "I learned at a young age to never fly without some type of cover. Running is easier to hide. Plus, I'm just as fast running as I am flying. The only real advantage is I can fly over the buildings instead of running around them."
Lena held the door of the hotel open for Kara. "Why didn't Clark fly for so long?"
They made their way to the elevator. The hotel was empty except for the person at the front desk. "Clark wasn't able to fly right away. It took years for him to get that power."
"But you could always fly," Lena said confused.
Kara pressed the button for the elevator. "Clark grew up on Earth," Kara reminded Lena. The elevator dinged and they got inside. "He grew up as a human and he limited himself because of it. He was afraid to fly. He didn't start flying until he put on the suit," Kara continued as they walked to their room.
Lena shook her head. "It's hard to imagine Superman not being able to fly."
Kara laughed. She dug the keycard from her pocket and opened the door to their room. "I do tease him about it. So does Lois. She knew him long before he could fly." She plopped down on the couch. "Did I ever tell you how they met?"
Lena kicked off her heels and sat beside Kara. "No, you haven't."
"Well, Lois went to Smallville looking for Clark. She was investigating the supposed death of her cousin, Chloe. Clark had gone off with Jor-El, his biological father and my uncle, earlier in the summer. Using Kryptonian technology Jor-El turned Clark into Kal-El, the perfect Krpytonian son. So, Lois is driving through Smallville trying to find the Kent Farm. Instead she finds a naked Clark with no memory of who he is," Kara finished with a laugh.
Lena laughed and shook her head. She couldn't imagine meeting Kara like that. It was too bizarre to contemplate. "Wait, did you say Clark's biological father?"
"I wondered if you were going to catch that," Kara said. "Jor-El was a scientist on Krypton. He created an AI within Clark's ship to guide and protect him."
"So the Jor-El that reprogrammed Clark…"
"Is not the Jor-El that fathered him," Kara finished. "He's more of an echo of the real Jor-El, similar to my mother's projection."
"What projection of your mother?" Lena asked confused.
Kara blushed in embarrassment. She hadn't realized she never told her about the AI of her mother hidden in the DEO. Trust was she hadn't visited that projection in a while. It was painful talking to her mother, knowing it wasn't really her mother. She envied that about Clark. He could hate Jor-El as much as he wanted, and rebel against the man because he hadn't known him as a father.
"My mother set up an AI for me," Kara confessed. "It was more of a Kryptonian google."
Lena's eyes widened. She could imagine the possibilities. But there was something bothering her. Why hadn't Kara mentioned anything before?
"Why didn't you tell me about it?" Lena asked confused.
"Honestly, I didn't think of it," Kara admitted. "Talking to that projection… in the beginning it was like having my mother back. But I realized, it wasn't my mother, no matter how much I wished it was. I stopped visiting before you came to National City and haven't really thought about it much since."
Lena nodded in understanding. She couldn't fault Kara for that. She knew how much Kara missed her mother. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up."
"No, it's fine," Kara said quickly. "I'm sorry for hiding it. It wasn't intentional. I promise."
Lena kissed her cheek and leaned against her.
Kara's phone rang, interrupting the comfortable silence. Kara didn't want to answer the phone. She had been stuck in her own little world with Lena for the past few days and she didn't want it to end. Kara sighed and grabbed her phone.
It was Alex.
"Kara, I'm sorry for calling," Alex said before she could say anything. "You said to call if Cadmus made a move."
"What happened?" Kara said quickly. Kara dreaded to think what happened while she was away.
"L-Corp was attacked an hour ago," Alex answered. Kara put the phone on speaker so Lena could hear.
"Alex, it's Lena," Lena said quickly. "Was anything taken?"
"We don't know," Alex said honestly. "Sam got the call. They went to your lab. Whatever they wanted must have been in there. But it doesn't look like they got in."
Lena sighed in relief. There were some dangerous things in her lab. The thought of Cadmus getting ahold of anything…
"Kara," Alex started.
"I'm coming back," Kara interrupted.
"We're coming back," Lena interjected. Kara stared at Lena, ready to protest. "Don't even say it Kara. My lab was attacked. I want to find Cadmus as much as you do."
"We'll be there within the house," Kara said. She hung up the phone and focused her attention on Lena. "I'm sorry about this. I know I promised no Supergirl but—"
Lena cut her off with a kiss. "It's fine Kara. Stopping Cadmus is more important." Lena looked down. "We should probably change first."
Kara disappeared and reappeared wearing jeans and a t-shirt. "Go ahead. I'll wait for you."
It was strange seeing Supergirl wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Lena wasn't sure what she expected. Her suit wasn't here and she had to wear something. Lena quickly stripped off her dress. When she imagined how this night would end, she did expect to be naked… but not so she could turn around and change into slacks and a blouse.
Lena took a minute and leaned against the sink. Cadmus had broken into her lab. Alex telling them that it didn't look like anything was stolen was a relief but at the same time she didn't trust it. Lena wanted to know what they were looking for. She had Kryptonite in her lab, Kryptonite that she was now going to move to a safer location. She also had the recipe for Kryptonite that she had found in Lex's possessions and then altered to make work. Luckily, she destroyed the recipe not too long ago. She only kept a few notes that they would never figure out.
The other question that got to Lena was, who was running Cadmus? It had to be someone that knew something about her and what she kept in there.
"Lena," Kara called. "We need to go."
Lena patted her face with a wet washcloth. "Coming," Lena called back.
"We're going to have to run," Kara warned her. "It may be uncomfortable. Just tuck your head into my shoulder and you should be okay."
Kara lifted her off the ground and ran out the window.
As Kara ran through the streets Lena realized something, something she never thought she would admit. She preferred flying. Maybe it was because she knew Kara would never drop her. Running was only slightly slower than flying due to have to avoid the buildings instead of going over them.
They arrived at Kara's apartment in no time. Kara sat Lena down on the couch and disappeared for a second to change into her costume. "Are you ready? We have to fly now."
Lena allowed Kara to pull her into her arms and fly out of the apartment.
Kara could tell how much more relaxed Lena was while she flew to L-Corp. She wanted to tease Lena about it but now wasn't the time.
She touched down in front of L-Corp. Once Lena was placed on the ground they made their way to the front door. Security was surprised to see Lena walking into L-Corp with Supergirl by her side. The last he heard Lena Luthor was on vacation and not to be disturbed.
"Clyde," Lena greeted with a nod.
"Ms. Luthor, Supergirl," he said tipping his hat to them. "I didn't expect you back so soon."
"I didn't either," Lena said glaring at the building as if it were the buildings fault she was back.
"Ms. Arias is inside along with Agents Danvers and Henshaw," Clyde reported.
"Thank you Clyde," Lena said. She studied his face. He looked like he hadn't slept in days. "Go home Clyde. Get some sleep."
"But Ms. Luthor," he protested.
Lena held up her hand. "No arguments. Get some rest. We will probably be here until day shift arrives anyway." She knew why he protested. He was a single add, with lots of bills. It was probably why he was so tired. Clyde nodded and turned to leave. "And Clyde," he turned around, "relax. You will still get paid."
Lena could see the relief in his eyes. He would never say anything, not wanting to take advantage of Lena's generosity but Lena knew how much he needed money. "Thank you Ms. Luthor," he said gratefully. "If you need anything, let me know."
Kara watched the security guard walk away. "That was nice of you," Kara commented. Not that she doubted Lena's generosity. It was amazing how well she turned out considering who raised her.
"He's a single dad of two young children," Lena said softly. "His ex decided she didn't want to be a mother anymore and walked out on them. I've done what I can to help him out. Got his kids into a good daycare and found someone to stay with them while he works. He won't take anything else I've offered, except the occasional odd job."
Lena led Kara through the building and down to her lab where Sam, Alex and Hank were waiting.
"Ms. Luthor," Sam exclaimed. "And Supergirl, what a lovely surprise."
Supergirl walked over to Alex and Hank. She had to remind herself she was not Alex's sister in this moment and couldn't hug Alex. "Supergirl," Alex greeted with a soft smile. She should tell how much happier her sister looked. Something big must have happened. She would interrogate Lena later.
"Is anything missing?" Lena asked Sam.
"So far, nothing," Sam told her.
Lena walked into her half destroyed lab and opened the safe. "Supergirl you may want to back away," Lena warned. Supergirl backed up as the door opened, revealing Lena's small store of Kryptonite as well as numerous papers. "Nothing from my safe was taken." She quickly shut the safe. Supergirl relaxed once the Kryptonite was locked away.
Lena looked around her lab. Why would someone go through all the effort to break in if they weren't going to take anything? It made zero sense to her. "I don't get it," Lena finally admitted.
"Is there anything here that shouldn't be?" Supergirl asked.
Lena looked around the lab. All of her equipment was present along with her safe. She could see her laptop on the table where she left them. "No, only my things are here."
"You're sure nothing is missing?" Kara asked scanning the room. The only thing she couldn't see was inside of the safe, which wasn't a big deal to her.
Lena did one final search of all of her things in the lab. "No, everything is here…" she said slowly. "Wait, I was working on a project before I left. It's gone as well as my notes."
"What was the project?" Hank questioned.
"I need to speak to Supergirl in private," Lena announced. She needed a chance to explain before Kara found out. She was afraid Kara would never forgive her if she found out.
"It's okay Lena," Supergirl said. "I trust you."
Lena took a deep breath. She was terrified that their relationship was going to end before it began. She prayed she had a chance to explain. "It was one of Lex's projects. He was working on a neurotoxin to kill Kryptonians. It was unsuccessful but I modified and completed it. It's a neurotoxin strong enough to disable Kryptonians or any other alien."
Alex and Hank stared at her in surprise. "Lena…" Alex began.
"Don't," Lena said. She couldn't bare to hear how angry they were. "I never meant to be used against Superman or Supergirl. They aren't the only aliens on Earth and most want to kill us. I did it to protect us."
"Lena," Alex said softly. "That's not what I was going to say. I was going to ask what it would do against humans."
"Oh," Lena said slightly embarrassed. "Well it wasn't meant for human but I imagine it would work. It hasn't actually been tested. Considering how strong it has to be for aliens it may actually kill a human. No one knew about that project," Lena continued. "I kept it off all records. No one knew… except Lex." Her eyes widened in horror. "Do you think he broke in?"
"It's possible," Hank said slowly. He glanced at Alex and then at Supergirl. "Is it possible Cadmus is somehow connected to your brother?"
"I don't know Agent Henshaw," Lena said honestly. "I don't recall seeing Cadmus mentioned in any of Lex's things. But that doesn't mean it's not there. I will look into it in the morning."
Hank nodded. "Supergirl, can I have a moment?"
Supergirl followed Hank out of the lab. "What do you think?" he questioned.
"She's telling the truth," Supergirl said confidently.
"That's not what I meant," Hank said. "You're not worried about her technology?"
"I trust her," Supergirl said firmly.
"Supergirl," Hank started.
"No," Supergirl interrupted. She still hadn't forgiven him for thinking Lena was helping her mother. He still didn't trust Lena despite the fact that she had proven herself time and time again. "Lena is trying to help people, help us. She made a shield for me and for Kal." She tapped the shield. "She's done more to protect me than the DEO. She's even going to adapt her shield to protect the DEO agents."
"Still, if Lex is part of Cadmus…"
Then Lena needs protection just like everyone else," Supergirl finished.
Hank didn't comment, knowing nothing he said would change anything. Kara was extremely loyal to those she loved. It was one of the many things that Hank admired about her. It was also one of the things that irritated him. Sometimes she had faith in the wrong people. Whether or not Lena was one of the wrong people… he didn't know. Her thoughts showed one thing but her actions seemed to be different.
Alex stepped out of the lab. "Supergirl, you should head home or back to your vacation. We can finish up here."
Supergirl shook her head. "I'll stay," she said knowing Lena wouldn't leave. "I think our vacation may be over with everything going on."
Alex frowned. She hated that her sister's vacation was cut short. "How did it go?" Alex asked. Did Lena tell her? That's what Alex really wanted to go.
Supergirl glanced at Hank. "Later," she promised.
"Supergirl," Lena called stepping out of the lab with Sam.
Supergirl studied Lena. She looked ready to pass out after they long, busy day. "I'll take you home," Supergirl said.
"I'm okay," Lena protested. She yawned and swayed. Sam grabbed ahold of her to keep her steady.
Supergirl walked over to Lena. "You're tired," Supergirl said softly. "Let me take you home so you can get some sleep. You can come back in the morning."
Lena studied Supergirl's face, Kara's face, the face of the woman she loved. She sighed and nodded. Kara was right. She needed to sleep. Then she would get back to work.
"Take me home Supergirl," Lena muttered.
