Ash awoke the next morning to the sun seeping through the curtains. He opened his eyes only to close them almost instantly when the sun hit his eyes. Groaning, he turned to the nightstand to notice his pokeballs on the table. He looked around the room to find Pikachu only to see him resting on the corner of the bed.
He went through his morning routine of showering, putting on clean clothes, and brushing his teeth before deciding to deal with spearow. Heading out to the training grounds behind the pokecenter, he released Poliwag and spoke to him and Pikachu.
" Hey guys, I know it's still early but we need to deal with spearow right now. I don't want him to go hungry." His Poliwag nodded while Pikachu made a noise to show he heard. Once receiving confirmation that they understood, he released the tiny bird.
When it was released it spread its wings and released a loud cry before observing its surroundings. It noticed the tadpole that took it down and cawed in annoyance while giving it a death stare before fixing its gaze on Ash.
When the bird turned his attention to Ash he began to speak. " Hello spearow, I'm the person who caught you." At spearows angry caw he held his hand up to signal he wasn't done. Spearow begrudgingly quieted down after glancing at the pokemon on either side of him. Ash continued when Spearow quieted down. " I will allow you to leave and return back to your flock. However, if you wish, I will help you get strong. I will do my best to make sure you won't ever face a defeat as humiliating as the one you've faced today."
Spearow looked up at the person with begrudging respect. For the human child to be so mature about this was surprising. Most humans would demand him to listen to them, many certainly wouldn't allow him to return back to his flock. Maybe staying wouldn't be so bad. His poliwag is already pretty strong despite the kid being young. . If he keeps on progressing then maybe tagging along won't be so bad.
Spearow nodded once and pointed a wing at Ash, letting him know he wanted to stay. While it sucks that he won't be able to see his flock, he wants to get stronger. If this is how, then so be it.
Ash nodded and grinned. " Nice, I'll do my best to make you one of the strongest birds in the world. " A gurgling noise interrupted the moment causing Ash to burn red. Scratching the back of his head he chuckled embarrassedly. " How about we eat breakfast first?"
LATER
After eating breakfast, Ash and his two cooperative teammates gathered together to discuss their training. The pokedex was quite helpful in this endeavor, after all, it did have data on possible moves.
[Spearow the tiny bird pokemon. This Spearow's ability is Keen Eye. Its moves are Growl, Leer, Peck, Astonish, Quick Attack, and Furry Attack.]
Ash simply grinned at his Spearow, it was going to be a monster.
"You know some good moves already, we should try and add Asuarance and Steel Wing to your repertoire. It'll help you deal with some weaknesses and improve your type coverage." Spearow nodded at this, knowing that rock types had him beat with his current moveset. Before trying to focus energy into his wings to get the basis of Steel Wing down.
Ash turned towards Poliwag, telling him what to do next. " Poliwag, you should try to strengthen your Water Gun to start training for Water Pulse. Just put as much power as you can into Water Gun." Poliwag nodded before waddling away to start blasting a rock.
Ash turned towards Pikachu with a sigh. " Pikachu want to train or are you just going to keep doing what you do?" Pikachu didn't say anything and opted to run up onto a tree branch and rest. Ash simply sighed and shook his head as he told his pokemon he was going inside to ask Nurse Joy about something.
As Ash made his way to Nurse Joy after entering the building with a question. " Hey, Nurse Joy. I was wondering if you can show me a little of how to care for pokemon so I can treat basic injuries for them." While Ash had learned a bit from Oak, he wanted to learn some more from someone who was trained in the field.
Nurse Joy looked at him with wide eyes before shaking her head and smiling. " Of course! Sorry for staring, its just that I don't think any trainer has asked me that before. Come on back I'll have you practice with some of the happiny and chanseys." She gestures for him to follow her around the counter to the back.
He just stares at where he's supposed to go. " … That was easier than I thought." He just made his way to where Nurse Joy went. When he entered the doorway she went in, he was surprised to say the least.
There were at least 6 happinys and 9 chanseys working in the room. He wasn't sure what he was expecting, but this wasn't it. He knew there were at least 1 chansey in ever center, but never expected 15 to be in one. He thought there was one that stayed up front and like 3 others that worked in the back along with nurse joy.
He shouldn't be surprised, he guessed. It does make more sense the more you think about it. How else are they going to care for an entire city's pokemon? " Well now I feel stupid." Nurse joy chuckles at his reaction before replying.
" Most people who see this have similar reactions, it makes sense but most people never expect us to have this many chansey." Ash just looks at her, and nods. Not knowing what to say.
Learning in the back for about an hour was fun. The chansey were nice and pointed him in the right direction when he was wrong. Nurse Joy popped in for a couple minutes at a time to give quick explanations for herbs or setting injuries, overall, it was fun and educational.
The happiny on the other hand was around his level of knowledge. They just started learning about medical stuff since they recently became old enough to practice it. Most of them were energetic and eager to learn. One of the happiny was more energetic than the others.
She would study and practice like the others, but she was often found wandering around and trying to talk to him. It was kind of refreshing if he was being honest. It was nice to be surrounded by the chansey and happiny, but they acted almost the exact same way. It was kinda creepy.
Anyway, he stayed at Viridian city for a week to get an actual grasp of the medical techniques and wouldn't forget them soon after. His pokemon were also progressing in their training as well. His spearow and poliwag beat most trainers who challenged them, often winning pretty easily. Because of this, he often found himself battling against trainers who had way more experience.
His pokemon actually struggled against those and grew the most from those fights. Despite them losing those fights, they were learning how to battle against pokemon far stronger than them and strategies to do so. It hurt Spearow's pride a bit to lose so much, but even the little bird couldn't deny that all those battles were making him far stronger than he could have grown by himself in this time.
Hell, even Pikachu was warming up to him. He wasn't as cold as he used to and began to participate in some training and even some battles. That little damn mouse packed quite a punch for its size. Pikachu managed to get down double team somehow, and managed to pick up the basics of iron tail from watching spearow get down his steel wing.
Speaking of moves, his pokemon were progressing greatly. Spearow managed to manifest steel wing, even if it was for just a couple seconds. It was still able to be used in battle. Poliwag was managing to get his blasts more powerful, almost at the level the water pulse needed to be.
Hell the little happiny even joined in on their sessions too. She sometimes joined in or messed with them by using gravity, either throwing them off balance or just straight up sending them into the ground. Spearow obviously wasn't amused the first time. Luckily she practices heal pulse and the rare aromatherapy if they ever receive status conditions during battles or spars.
He was spending his last night at the center, relaxing with his team. Poliwag was running around pikachu messing with him, while Spearow perched on his left shoulder. His talons gripping his shoulder hurt but he didn't mind. Spearow was becoming more affectionate and he didn't want to accidentally hurt the bird's feelings. He got up from the seat in the cafeteria signaling his team to follow him. As he was making his way towards his room an alarm blaired.
WARNING: TEAM ROCKET HAS BEEN SPOTTED IN THE AREA! PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN GOING OUT!
Just when the alarm finished sounding out, a huge explosion happened on the roof of the pokecenter, startling Ash and his pokemon, sending them running behind a wall to observe what would happen next.
Just then, 3 figures appeared from the smoke filling the lobby and …. Began an intro.
" Prepare for trouble!"
"And Make it double!"
" To Pro-", Their little performance was cut short by Ash calling out, " Pikachu use thunder wave, Poliwag water gun, and spearow stay back and prepare to defend against any counter attacks."
This time, Pikachu knew the seriousness of the situation and didn't ignore his command, firing a swirling wave of electricity at the trio, and the water gun smashing into the wave, creating a paralyzing beam of water.
The trio of thieves barely managed to jump out of the way, before calling out their own pokemon.
"Koffing, come out!"
"Ekans! Defend us!"
Immediately, the two pokemon appeared out of their balls in a flash. Ekans started hissing, at us, sensing hostility. The Koffing however just called out its name while appearing to inflate a little.
" You twerp, don't you know who we are! We are team rocket, so hand us you pokemon!" A voice that sounded like a woman called out, their pokemon calling out soon after. "Ekaaaaans!"
"Koffiiing!"
Annoyed they'd believe he would give up so easily he called out another set of attacks. "Spearow, use steel wing! Pikachu charges in with a quick attack and follows up with a thundershock. Poliwag charges in with pounds!" His pokemon didn't hesitate and charged onwards, even though he did hear a click from pikachu.
" Ekans use poison sting!" "Koffing, Us tackle!" Ekans stayed back and shot some poison darts forward from it's mouth, while koffing shot forward intending to meet spearow head on.
When the charging pokemon met, spearow brought koffing down by channeling the steel energy through it's wings, barely feeling the tackle while sending koffing flying back. Pikachu ducked under the poison sting and rammed into ekan's stomach sending it up into the air. Poliwag waddling as fast as it could jump up using its tail to boost itself further, jumped onto the snake moments later and headbutted it back down into the floor.
" Koffing use poison gas!" Their partner snapped out of their shock of being over powered by a kid and called their next command. " Ekans, wrap them up then poison sting." Ekans righted itself and slithered forward towards Pikachu.
Pikachu, already knowing what to do next, shot a thunder shock followed by a thunder wave to further hamper their movements. Poliwag, deciding to attack once again, shot a stronger than usual water gun at the koffing, weighing down the poison gas with the water and hitting the koffing in the face.
Ash grinned, being proud of his pokemon's initiative. " Good job Pikachu, Poliwag! Follow up with a double team and mud shot! Spearow, hit the koffing with a peck!" Spearow flew forward and hit the koffing into the ground with its beak knocking it down.
Pikachu used double team and started having the illusions running around the ekans distracting it, while shooting quick thunder shocks to deal damage and stay hidden. Poliwag, taking advantage of the snake's distraction, hit it with mud shot, knocking it out.
" GIve up, we beat your pokemon. Don't make it harder than it has to be." Ash stated in a cold voice. Immediately after he called out nurse joy in a worried tone. " Joy! Joy! It's okay to come out now. I assume you called Officer Jenny already?"
Nurse Joy appeared from the doorway behind the counter, with her chansey, seeming worried. " Y-yea. I already called officer jenny. She's on her way here." Ash nodded at the info, while keeping an eye on the thieves finally taking in their full appearance now that the smoke has fully dispersed.
One had chin length purple hair, and had masculine features. While the other had long red hair, slicked back and curved behind her back. Besides them was a meowth who was standing on its hind legs. Then it … spoke?
" Let us go kid. I'll getcha a spot in team rocket." Ash just stared at him with a loss for words. He just sighed and asked Pikachu to thunderwave him. Pikachu didn't complain.
Eventually officer Jenny came by and arrested the rocket grunts. Nurse Joy and himself had to give statements of what happened, and had to fill out some paperwork. After what seemed to take hours, they left the Police station and headed straight to their rooms to immediately sleep.
LATER
The next morning Ash decided to head out to pewter city. As he had managed to learn most of the medical techniques, he decided along with his pokemon that there was no point in staying in the city any longer. They were already plenty strong and managed to learn new moves.
Ash went around the center saying goodbye to Nurse Joy and the chansey and happiny working there. The energetic happiny that normally hung out with his pokemon was saddened by the news of his departure. It made him feel like shit to just leave the little pokemon when he wanted him to stay but he needed to go if he wanted to collect all the badges for the league.
On his way to Viridian forest, with his bag full of antidotes and healing items, he trekked into the forest, not noticing the figure following behind him.
