Chapter 3: start of another civil war

"Uhh" Kate gasped, waking up in a cold sweat. She looked at her phone to see it was two twenty in the morning. That was the third nightmare she had about Clint since he died, it was definitely karma. She got out of bed, well her army cot, and looked out the tents door. They were staying at a military base stationed to spy on the residents of Madripoor. John had convinced one of old military buddies to let them stay the night, and having a member of the Avengers with you helps get what you need.

Kate stood there watching the stars, she could catch a glimpse of Madripoor lit up over the night sky. There were some fireworks going off, a lot actually. It took a moment for her to remember it was only two days until new years, she hadn't even thought about it that much this week. Yelena was somewhere in that city, the thought of that made the hair on her neck stand up.

"You can't sleep" Kate turned to see Wanda approaching her "I hope you don't mind, I heard you mumbling in your sleep and I kind of looked in your head" Wanda said apologetically

Kate was a little offended by that, but she couldn't deny that if she had the same powers she would be tempted to do the same thing "it's fine don't worry". Kate wanted to ask something now that she had a chance, but how do you word something like this "why did you want to come" she said in probably the worst way to word it.

"Clint was my friend," Wanda said as if that was the ending. But she seemed to be just as lost for words "he… he was one of my closest friends, he probably helped me more then anyone else on the team, aside from Vision" she seemed to mellow down "he's the only reason I had the guts to join the team in the first place, he really knew how to inspire someone". Those last words hit Kate hard, no one had inspired her more. "When that big 'Civil War' hit, as the news put it, Clint was the one who helped get me to do the right thing and I have no regrets about going with him" Wanda leaned on the support beam and continued "now that they both are gone I just… I feel like I need to do more, to do whatever they would do, the right thing. And in general I'm just tired of living a fantasy." Wanda could tell how much this was touching Kate "how about you"

"I didn't even know Clint a week, and yet he was already one of the most important people in my life" Kate started "he saved me when I was a kid during the battle of New York, ever since then I wanted to be him, or at least a fraction of what he was" Kate sniffled a little "guess I couldn't live up to that". Kate turned to see Wanda giving her a pat on the back "I didn't tell you everything, Yelena only knew where to look…. Because my mother hired her to kill Clint, all because he was getting close to me"

Wanda seemed shocked at first but mellowed down "that doesn't mean it's your fault, it's Yelena's" she said

"But I'm still responsible for it, '' Kate said. She appreciated what Wanda was saying and it was probably true, but it didn't change anything. It was still her responsibility to avenge her idol. "Thanks for asking, it feels nice to talk about this stuff, I'm going to get some air" Kate said as she left the tent. It was dark, but the Madripoor city lights helped make things somewhat visible. She made it to the dining tent, there was a bag of bagels laying wide open on one of the main tables. She helped herself to one and took a bite of it bare, it was actually pretty good without cream cheese. Kate started playing with the bag, it was kinda irresponsible of the guys on this base to just leave a bag…

Kate started to get cold feet, she felt like she was being watched. She slowly turned to the corner and there was Wilson watching her. She was so close to yelling before Wilson shushed her "quiet there are people sleeping" he said drinking some juice.

She heard footsteps behind her, she twirled back around to see Barnes taking a seat across from her "it's Bishop right, Kate Bishop"

"Yeah" she said. What was she going to do, they clearly didn't want to fight or even intimidate her. In fact they both seemed like they were trying to be as comforting as possible.

"We know you're after Yelena" Sam said coming and sitting next to her "but you need to understand, it's wrong and it won't fix anything"

Kate didn't respond to this.

"We are so sorry about Clint, he was our friend too" Barnes said leaning in "and you need to know we're not on Yelena's side, we're here to make sure she faces justice. But it has to be true justice"

Kate sighed. What was she supposed to do, argue for taking bloodthirsty revenge on a deadly assassin. Whenever someone phrased it that way it sounded more like her villain origin story rather than a heroic tale. She started to notice the long silence she was creating and finally spoke "yeah it is wrong, but she did something terrible and I feel like if I can do something about I should"

"You should" Barnes said "we're going after Yelena once we're settled with Wanda, once we get to Yelena you can yell, curse, and let it all your emotions out, but we can't go after her for something only to do it ourselves"

Kate started getting a bad feeling in her stomach, it was like she was split completely down the middle. Wilson and Barnes are right about some things, but Wanda might be a little right too. The truth was none of these opinions mattered, she only wanted to do what Clint would have done. "Why are you after Wanda" Kate said quickly changing the subject

"She.." Wilson said clearly at a loss for words "she made some mistakes recently, some people suffered, and now a lot of people want her to see justice"

"And what about Walker how is he involved in this" Barnes asked obviously he had been waiting to ask that

"He and Yelena used to work together but she went rogue to go after Clint, now he was sent to make sure she couldn't do anymore damage. If it makes you feel any better I don't think he has any desire to see her dead" she said, at bare minimum she might make sure John wasn't in any trouble

"Sent by who, he was fired from the military" Barnes asked

"Hey we'll look into it later" Wilson said getting back on topic "we're not going to do anything right now, but we are going to have to deal with Wanda tomorrow. But after that we'll go after Yelena and you could join us, you can still do the right thing Kate" he said gesturing for Barnes to follow him out of the tent.

They both left the tent, she didn't bother to follow them because she had too much on her mind. Now she was forced to make this huge choice. Either stay with Wanda and John and get revenge, which is literally what Yelena claimed to be doing. Or help Barnes and WIlson and let Yelena get off easy. All either side had to do was explain what Clint would have done, it would help clear her head so much. She made her way back to bed, Wanda and John were already asleep. She laid down in her army cot praying she'd get at least a full hour of sleep after that.
