Chapter 4

Shadow smirked in satisfaction as the Scourger ran away. He turned to look over at Sonic, only to realize that he wasn't there.

"Sonic?" He called, looking around.

"Up here!"

Shadow looked up and saw Sonic at the top of their tree. How the heck did he get up there so fast?

"Shadow, come on, you gotta see this!" He called down to the ebony.

"Be careful, hedgehog!" Shadow called back up as he started climbing up the tree. "It'd be very unfortunate if you fell right now."

"Yeah, yeah, just hurry!"

'What has got him so excited?' Shadow thought to himself as he continued to climb.

Before he knew it, Shadow was at the top of the tree, sitting comfortably on a branch right next to the blue hedgehog.

"Took you long enough." Sonic chuckled.

"Shut it, Faker, you got up here long before me." Shadow rolled his eyes. "Now what are you so excited about? What are you looking at?"

"This." Sonic presented proudly. "All of this. Isn't it beautiful, Shads? From the trees that fly up the mountains, to the river that flows into the ocean. It's gorgeous. And to think, it's all ours. Every acre of it. It's amazing.

Shadow frowned and looked in the same direction as the blue hedgehog. He was confused when all he saw were a bunch of hills. Was the hedgehog delusional, or was this part of his imagination too?

"I don't see anything." He finally answered.

Sonic rolled his eyes. "That's because you're seeing with your eyes. You need to see with your mind."

"How…"

"Shh. Listen Shads. Just close your eyes. Take a deep breath. And keep your mind wide open."

Shadow sighed and closed his eyes. He took a deep, relaxing breath through his nose and focused. Before he knew it, he could hear the fluttering and tweets of birds. The rushing and splashing of water going somewhere. He could even hear the wind howling through trees. He opened his eyes and gasped.

In front of him were no longer rolling hills, but rather the beautiful land Sonic had described before.

A large mountain stood in front of them, the trees of the forest flying up it and spacing out, going up the surrounding peaks around the mountain. Birds of all kinds flew around those mountains, some of them Shadow could vaguely tell they were phoenix, calling out to each other. A rushing river flowed through a ravine down the mountain, connecting with a beautiful blue ocean that reflected the sunlight of the late afternoon. Shadow gasped as he watched as out of the water, mermaids jumped with dolphins.

It was gorgeous.

"Wow." He gave a breathy sigh of astonishment. "This place is amazing."

"And it's all ours, Shadow." Sonic nodded with a smile. "This is our place."

"... What do we call it?"

"How about… Terabithia?"

"Terabithia…" Shadow gave it a thought. "I like it."

"Sonic and Shadow, Kings of Terabithia."

"... Yeah… Yeah I like that a lot."
