Disclaimer: don't own it - wish i did!

a/n: just a quick note of explanation - this is from Dumbledore's pov, set during the war with Grindelwald, and is about Minerva McGonagall. Albus is surprised to find out just how good a soldier Minerva is...

I Didn't Know You At All

It shouldn't have taken this bloody war

To make me see you

Like I should have before,

To see that you were so much more…

I never really knew you at all.

I knew how you smiled

And I knew how you laughed,

How you rolled your green eyes

And said I was daft.

And I knew you were smart

And I knew you were brave;

I knew you were proper

And always behaved.

I knew your expressions,

Emotions and ticks

But those things I know now

Were all academic.

I should have realised a long time a go,

Should have given you space to grow on your own.

I've been playing the mentor and acted a fool:

I was beyond arrogance to think I knew you.

You've laboured through hardship

And watched your friends die.

You've killed and you've died for it,

Blackened inside,

And you're not that person

Who ever asks why;

You simply keep fighting

For what you know's right.

You've led and you've followed,

You've won and you've lost,

With equal resolve

And heedless of cost.

When I said you were brave

I had no concept of

The pieces of soul

Your valour would cost.

The woman before me

Is stalwart and true.

Though I knew of your love

and the sweet side of you

I stand here today

And like never before

I see you a woman

- Commanding a war.

And I know now

…I didn't know you at all

a/n - I just wrote this and for reasons unknown to me decided to post it. I know it's really rough, and if you're looking for something lyrical this isn't it, but I've got this idea for a future fanfic knocking around in my head and it led to this very depressing poem... sorry?
