When I arrive at the manor, the Pro-Hero is already waiting for me in the bedroom …
At midnight sharp, a portal opens in my bathroom. I push the Pro-Hero's body away from mine and grab my night robe. After another moment's thought, I change into my clothes from last night, bandages, gloves, choker, and knives included. I even curl my hair into those devil horns. I walk into the portal. It makes me feel disoriented. I stumble out and clutch my cane for balance. Shigaraki is sitting on a barstool, leaning against the counter, and Kurogiri is polishing wine glasses behind the counter. They're wearing the same clothes from last night. Shigaraki's face is hidden behind his plaster hand. It almost feels like déjà vu. Remembering last night, I look at the monitor and account for All-for-One.
Kurogiri and Shigaraki greet me in their own ways. There's Kurogiri's respectful "Good evening, Selene," and then there's Shigaraki's rude "Alright, kid. You know the deal. Whaddya learn today?"
Just as well. "Good evening to you too, Kurogiri." I only nod my head toward Shigaraki, and that sours his mood further, much to my pleasure.
I climb onto a bar stool, cross my legs, rest my elbows against the counter, link fingers, and rest my head upon them. "May I have some water, please?" Shigaraki grumbles even more, and though it's barely noticeable, it seems that Kurogiri is smiling behind his purple wisps. Kurogiri hands me a glass full of water, and I take my sweet time drinking it. Out of the corner of my eye, I can practically see how close Shigaraki is to grabbing that glass from my hand and disintegrating it in his. Just before he forsakes all patience, I set the glass down on the table and turn to face him.
"Today there was a crowd of reporters outside the school, demanding an interview with All Might or anyone learning under All Might. Eventually, there were so many, they broke past the school's barriers into school grounds. There was quite the stampede. The U.A. faculty was able to get the reporters to leave, but they didn't know how they entered in the first place. That is, until, they found a four-layer thick gate crumbled to pieces. No further evidence was left behind. But you wouldn't know anything about that, would you, Shigaraki?" I raise my eyebrow as I say his name. Using my amplification ability, I had raised my hearing to be able to Principal Nezu speak from the gate all the way to the classroom. A crumbled object sounded too familiar to me. Especially, after I had absorbed a decay quirk last night.
"Why are you asking when you already know the answer?" he responded.
"I was simply checking whether you would deny it. I already knew you were responsible for destroying that gate."
"So did you learn anything besides that I was at your school and I crumbled the gate to allow the reporters in?" He is very irritated now.
"Principal Nezu thinks that no reporter caused that. He thinks it's a declaration of war, so he's keeping it under wraps for now."
Shigaraki laughs at that. "Our little stunt worked, Kurogiri. Did you hear that, Sensei? U.A. is perceiving a threat, and they don't want to tell their weakling students about it."
All-for-One chuckles as well. "Yes. Well done, Shigaraki. We can use the fact that U.A. is hiding such information from their students to our advantage." All-for-One's next statement is directed at me. "Selene, are there any upcoming events where All Might is expected to attend?"
Events … I think about the slip of paper I saw escape from Aizawa-sensei's sleeping bag when I stayed back in class. It mentioned that two weeks from now, Class 1-A would head to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint for rescue training. Sensei, Pro-Hero Thirteen, and All Might were all expected to supervise. "There is one. Two weeks from now. Sometime mid-afternoon, all of Class 1-A will go to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint to receive rescue training practice. Three heroes are expected to supervise the class: Eraserhead, Thirteen, and All Might. But it's so soon, and I only learned this information today. If you plan to attack then, you will be unprepared."
Shigaraki scoffs. "Don't worry about preparedness. I've been scouting some low-level criminals who're willing to do anything to make some dough. I've got many in my pocket already." He beckons to Kurogiri, who gives me an old-model flip phone. "My number and Kurogiri's number are in there. When you and the rest of the wannabe heroes leave, I want you to call either one of us. Got it?"
Hesitantly, I take the phone. "Is that all? Don't you want to know the quirks of the students? Or if there will be extra security? Or what the simulation joint is like? Map, structure, location, the nearest police stations and hero agencies, etcetera?"
"Don't worry yourself over the logistics. Kurogiri and I will figure out the details. As for the quirks of those wannabe heroes, they're just wannabes. They'll have been at U.A. for just one month. What can they possibly do against us, who've been in this crime industry for years?"
"Still, I wouldn't underestimate them this much. These past three days, it's been a series of training session after training session. If this pattern continues, then these students will have received a decent amount of on-site battle experience. They're learning to increase the versatility of their quirks and utilize them and their intelligence in times of crisis. I can provide you information of their quirks," I insist. With the way Shigaraki is talking, I'm concerned that the attack at the USJ will fail.
But Shigaraki waves me off. "Their quirks won't do shit against my ace." Seeing my confused expression, he smirks and continues. "Ya didn't think that I was going to go all against All Might with just a bunch of thugs, did ya? I've been working on a weapon that is designed to specifically kill All Might. So against a weapon that powerful, what are a bunch of juvies going to do?"
This is surprising information. But it does not lessen my wariness. "What weapon is this?"
"You'll see for yourself during the attack. It's a special invention that Sensei, Kurogiri, and I have been working on for quite some time. With this weapon, the League of Villains will make its official debut into society."
This is an unspoken dismissal. He doesn't want me to pester him further about this weapon of his. I take the cue and change the subject. "When you attack USJ, the students will try to fight back. You know this, too. So what will I do? Do I fight on your behalf and reveal myself to be allied with you, or do I fight on their side and hide my alliance with you?"
Kurogiri answers my question. "You will not have to fight. I'm going to arrange the battle so that you will be far away from the site of battle. In the end, if any teacher or classmate asks you where you were, just say that you fell unconscious or give some other valid excuse which prevented you from fighting."
It seems logical enough. I nod in acknowledgment. "Okay. Do you have any ideas for your attack plan, or will you tell me as the date comes closer?"
"We'll tell ya the plan once Kurogiri, Sensei, and I figure stuff out," answers Shigaraki.
A few more hours pass, discussing the further intel I should collect, and how many more criminals the League of Villains should hire. All-for-One praises me for the fact that I gathered valuable information in just 24 hours of being recruited as a spy. But he gives me the same warning that Todoroki-kun and Aizawa-sensei gave me. "You're clever, Selene, and there's no doubt that you will learn more about the heroes and their plans. But you're a spy, so you must be careful. The most common mistake a spy makes, novice or experienced, is that with time they become arrogant with the idea that they will not get caught. That very arrogance leads to them being caught and killed or tortured for information. I have observed from last night and this night that you are very prideful. It makes sense that given the kind of life you are living right now, you would clutch what remaining shreds of pride you have left and use that as your shield. But there is a very blurry line between pride and arrogance. Take care not to let those bits of pride turn into arrogance and be the cause of your demise."
In just one day, I've had to hear the same message from three different people: that my pride may hurt me if I don't control it. How ironic that those words hurt my pride. They sting. And what I say next stings it even more. "I understand." My pride is supposed to be my barrier. My wall against the world. With a wall like that, no one would ever imagine that Hanada Selene was a comfort woman sold by her adoptive family to businessmen and Pro-Heroes. No one would ever think that Hanada Selene was a weak and pitiful girl. No one would ever dream that to overcome her miserable fate, Hanada Selene became vengeful and began to kill. No one would ever believe that a girl as beautiful as the full moon during starry midnight was as monstrous as the Princes of Hell themselves.
I'm still seething when Shigaraki announces it's time for me to go. Kurogiri opens the portal to the bedroom again, and this time Shigaraki accompanies me, much to my confusion. I give him a questioning look, but he ignores me. As I go into the walk-in closet to change, I watch Shigaraki giving the Pro-Hero the same stare from last night. I'm no closer to detecting the emotion in his eyes. I come out wearing just a night robe and wait for Shigaraki to leave. He doesn't.
"When do you plan to kill this son of a bitch?" he whispers.
"After thirty days," I reply, thinking there's no benefit or harm if I tell him.
"You better. I hate this bastard's face." His whisper is quiet but so full of rage, it's almost tangible.
His expression tells me there's something more, but I don't press him about it. I watch him walk back into the portal as he gives one final glance at the sleeping Pro-Hero. The portal vanishes and I remove my night robe. I climb back into bed, and the Pro-Hero doesn't hesitate to fold himself on me. His arm and leg are thrown across my body.
I spend the rest of the night waiting for sunrise.
