An: Okay, so this chapter seemed to be well received. I am glad all of those who came back to read. I thank all the people who just joined in this small but strong story. Now just to answer a few reviews.
Hamizan Yunos: Wow! You really spoke your mind. Thank you! As the story goes on, you will find out why Fenrir is like this and see more of his character as this goes along.
Jebest4781: Hey! Thank you for reading my story. I am glad you took the chance to read my stories. Just to throw it out there: I am a fan of your work.
tpowe15: Thank you for the compliment. The interactions will continue through the story soon.
SkyPopZeus: Hi, welcome back. Glad you keep re-reading this story it makes me feel better about this story. If you read my Author Notes in my first chapter, I said we would see some other Fables pop-up, even those dead in cannon. For Fenrir's potential, you will have to wait and see ;). About leaving you guys on cliffhangers, I have one word: NEVER!
Fax15: Glad you loved it! For Ghost, you will see later on how he is and what drives him. For the part about Zatara knowing about Fables, well, that will be revealed in this chapter. As for everyone finding out who his parents are, well, you will have to wait and see.
Jetstream Blair: That's good; that was my intention to make him unlikeable. However, it is just a persona while Fenrir is on the Team. In this chapter, you will see a different side of him. Also, for why he can't fly, I will explain why he can't in a later chapter.
RandoFox: I'm sorry, I cannot really tell if this is a compliment or you're sarcastic. If this is a compliment, thank you very much. If this is sarcastic, bite me.
LoopSnake: Hey, welcome back. Here is more to consume!
Chapter 4: What Sharp Teeth You Have
Fenrir groaned as he opened his eyes. The sun was beating down on him with all its fury. He lifted his head off the ground and found his hands digging into the sand. Fenrir suddenly shot up in a panic. Where was he? Why was he here? Was this the ploy to get him into the Justice League? Why the hell did his skull feel like it was constricting around his brain. It was like he was boxing with As sat on his knees and turned his head around to see his surrounding, sand dripping from his face. Fenrir did a quick survey and found that he had no idea where the hell he was. "Just great," Fenrir groaned out as he stood and wiped the sand from his clothes.
Fenrir did a quick survey of the area through his sense he could only taste sand, and that told him he had been knocked out for a while. The only smell he could pick was the dry air, but nothing else on the end of the scent. Fenrir was definitely in a desert, but the question was 'Which one?' He then listened closely and picked up a high-pitched whistling sound heading straight for him. He looked up and saw a person approaching from the sky, coming right at him.
Fenrir dodge rolled out of the way into a crouch. He looked at the crater and saw a teen that looked like Superman. Fenrir narrowed his eyes as the teen gave a roar and charged at him. Fenrir stuck fast with a jab to the other teen's face. It stunned the teen who threw a wild swing, but Fenrir followed up, sweeping low underneath the swing. He got behind the teen, wrapped his arms around the teen's stomach, and lifted. Fenrir slammed the teen's head in the sand with a mighty roar like that of a wolf.
Fenrir pushed off him and rolled away, his face showing he transformed halfway. He growled when the teen recovered faster than he expected and let out a roar. Fenrir called, "Can we talk, or are you going to keep charging?" The teen shot off like a rocket, and Fenrir jumped over the teen. Fenrir then asked under his breath to no one in particular, "Can you talk?" He got his answer with another frenzied assault. Fenrir dodge with ease leaning back and stepping away. Fenrir grabbed a swing by the wrist and struck a kick to the teen's stomach. He trapped the arm and leaned back. Fenrir threw the teen away and got back over. The teen again roared. Having grown annoyed with the display yelled back, "You want to see who the alpha is? Fine! Let's see who the alpha is!?" Fenrir inhaled through his nose and then let out a roar that would have made siblings jealous, and his father impressed.
The teen was still for a moment staring at Fenrir. It seemed his brain was contemplating if fighting was worth it. Fenrir stared back, his amber eyes narrowed. He got his answer when the teen let out a roar but then leaped off in the opposite direction.
Fenrir stood and let out a calming breath before his features reverted back to normal. He huffed before walking in the opposite direction. He walked for a couple minutes with the sun beating down on him. Fenrir had taken his jacket off and was using it on his head to cover his neck and face. He walked in the endless heat and finally let out a groan as he tried to remember what he was doing in the desert. The last thing he remembered was being brief on the mission from the mayor of Fabletown, King Cole. Then going to see his parents before he shipped out for his mission. After that, it was blank.
After finally stopping due to the sun's heat making every step unbearable, he looked up, panting while wiping his forehead. He called out to the wind, "What do you say, sis? Lend your little brother a hand?" An answer came immediately as the wind picked up and some particles of sand picked up from the dunes. The sand danced in the air spiraling away, almost giving Fenrir direction. He smirked and said, "Thanks, sis." He raced after it.
The sun was no longer high in the sky as it started to descend into the west. Fenrir was beginning to get annoyed at following the wind and still getting nowhere. The trail eventually made to the top a dune but then dissipated. Fenrir grit his teeth and started his climb, all the while begging his sister, "Oh come on! Is this some sick…" He got to the top and saw an unconscious teen laying in the sand, "…oh. Who's this?" He slid down the dunes as he checked on the teen.
Fenrir went to check for a pulse. When he went touched the teen's neck, "Hey, buddy, it's going to be alright, just going to make sure your…Woah!" Fenrir withdrew quickly in surprise. The teen had gills! Fenrir composed himself as he tried to talk to the teen, "Okay, hold on, buddy, let's get you out of the sun." Fenrir maneuvered the teen, so he was laying on Fenrir's shoulders and back in a fireman's carry. Then teen was breathing, but it was labored and unsteady.
Fenrir suddenly felt the breeze pick up and was blowing steadily in a new direction. His sister was urging him to go that way. He walked for miles, and was the sun was slowly, but surely, going down. He wiped his brow, and something scrapped against it. He looked at his wrist to see he was wearing a watch of some kind. It was too high-tech to be anything Fabletown could have developed. So, the question was: how the hell did he get it? All the incidents were pissing him off. He couldn't remember how he got here or why he was here.
He trudged on through the scorching desert; even the pity breezes that his sister sent his way were doing little to nothing for him. After hours of walking, the wind died down and brought him to a tree. The tree was a fine specimen. While young, its bark was dark in color, and was the branches were budding. It was weird, considering they were in the middle of a desert. That was when it donned on Fenrir; his sister led him here because of the tree. The lush tree meant there was an underground reservoir nearby. He gently laid the Atlantean down to lean in against the young tree while telling him, "Don't worry, I'll be getting you help soon." He placed a comforting hand on the teen before he twisted around.
He took a couple whiffs of the air. He was trying to smell where the scent of water was strongest. Fenrir found the reservoir a few feet to the left of the tree. Fenrir whipped his hands to his sides, and his claws came out. He started digging away, and after three feet, Fenrir started to notice his shoes started to become damp. Fenrir smirked and swiped three more times, and water began to form an ankle-deep puddle.
Fenrir hopped out of the waist-deep hole he had made, grabbed the Atlantean, and then threw him in the man-made watering hole. Fenrir sighed in relief as the teen's color started to come back to him. Fenrir inhaled a big gulp of air and enjoy the comfort he was filling. The sound of the wind danced into his ears, and behind it, all was a low whistling sound. Fenrir's eyes shot open, and he quickly jumped away. There was a sniper out in the desert, and he was targeting him. The sand was kicked up by a bullet where he just stood. Fenrir didn't have to worry about the Atlantean as he still in the small water pit.
Fenrir used speed and agility to dodge while using his hearing to predict where the bullets were coming from. He leaned his head to the side, and his hair fluttered up as the bullet whizzed by her head. His eyes caught the glint of sunlight bouncing off a reflective lens. He smirked, finally finding his target. The gleam came from a small rock formation, each rock the length of a tall man and the width of a dining room table. One rock was buried in the sand, laying longways while two more stood on end and the tops touched. It looked like a triangle, with a hole in the center that was just open enough to fit a person in. He took a big inhale and blew out a puff of air, aiming it into the sand.
The sniper had been sitting in the hot sun for hours, looking for rebels and other hostiles. Hours by himself, and he was hoping to see any sort of actions. His wish came true in the form of two young teens coming over a dune. He saw instantly they were not from Bialya. What definitely made it clear was one of them grew sharp nails and started digging. That was all he needed to see, and he began opening fire. To his amazement, the teen dodged it. In fact, he avoided all his shots. Then suddenly, a sandstorm appeared, and he lost sight of him. He scanned the landscape and unable to find a trace of the kid. He started to sweat more and feel uneasy.
His feeling was justified when a hand shot out from beside the rocks, ripped his gun from his grip, and then he was ripped out of his hiding hole. He was pressed up roughly against one of the rocks. What stared back at him made him shiver in fear. The teen's face was now more bestial, large fangs replaced his teeth, his cheeks now with more fur, and his eyes were now amber. A low rumbling growl came from the teen, and his voice came more of beast than a person, "Who are you?" The man gave a confused look, not understanding what the beast-child wanted. He was jostled roughly into the rock his back was to; the teen roared out, "Where the hell I am!"
The man understood this time and, in a heavily accented whisper, said, "Bialya. You're in Bialya." He feebly tried to escape from the teen's grip.
Fenrir had no idea how he made it to Bialya. The drop-off point for him was a national park near New Jersey. He had no clue how he made it halfway across the world. "Thanks," he growled out before smashing his fist into the sniper's face. Fenrir made it back to the hole he left the Atlantean in. He saw the teen unharmed, just covered in sand from the attack. Fenrir sat himself down and leaned against the tree. He had no plan, no ideas. He wasn't a general; he was a soldier. He was given a plan and executed the plan to the best of his abilities. The only option he had was to wait and see if his new friend had an idea. He then looked at the watch on his wrist and fiddled with it. He pushed a few buttons on the touchscreen, and suddenly a date popped up in red coloring. Fenrir knew it was one of the interactive holographic displays. It read: September 4th, 2011, 14:13 EST. Fenrir's eyes widened, so he is missing six months of his life. He needed time to think. Fenrir shut his eyes and tried to ignore the heat.
Fenrir woke up to the sound of pained moans. Fenrir sprinted to the whole and saw the teen's eyes flutter open. The teen sat up and looked at Fenrir and asked, "Who are you?" He got to his knees and ran a hand through the water he was in.
"The guy who saved you from becoming a fish stick," Fenrir answered with a frown.
Kaldur looked at the teen that stood to his full height. If Kaldur hadn't seen many horrors of both the sea and land, he would call the teen intimidating. Kaldur stood up and stared at the teen, "You can call me Kaldur, but you probably know me by another name. Aqualad." Kaldur hoped that this teen was with the wrong people and attacked in his weakened state. "You have my thanks," he said with a nod.
Fenrir did know the name but was not sure when he first met Kaldur. Fenrir hummed for a moment, thinking this could be a way to infiltrate the Justice League and get what he needed. Fenrir stuck his hand down for Kaldur to take and spoke, "Fenrir." Kaldur took the offered hand and was helped out the whole.
Seeing his surroundings, Kaldur was not sure where to begin. He knew he was in a desert, but there were many deserts around the world. He had no idea which one he was in. Fenrir must have read his mind as he called out, "Bialya." Kaldur was shocked by the bit of news. Bialya was a sensitive place where the Justice League did not and could not intervene. It was a political issue; many people didn't want outside interference from a group more associated with the United States. "So, any idea where to go from here?" Fenrir asked, hoping that the young sidekick had a plan.
Kaldur sheepishly rubbed the back of his head and stated, "I am sorry, but I am at a loss. I don't even remember how I got here." Kaldur saw Fenrir staring at him in aggravation, but realization flickered across Fenrir's face.
Fenrir pointed at him and, with a contemplating look, asked, "What's the last thing you remember?"
Kaldur thought back and replied, "Fighting Black Manta."
Fenrir sighed, slapping his forehead. He didn't word the question right and so asked, "I mean the date."
Kaldur strained to think, but eventually, he came up with an answer. "March 7th." Kaldur was sure why it was significant about the date.
Fenrir closed his eyes and rolled his head back. He hoped Kaldur could take the news as well as he did. He touched the watch on his wrist and, like before, the date displayed in the air in front of them. Aqualad quickly recoiled in surprise. Fenrir's suspicions were correct; Aqualad didn't know he was missing six months of his life either.
Fenrir felt the wind whip around him. It was heading North. Fenrir looked over his shoulder and asked, "You got a plan?" His sister was telling him to go North, but he wanted to make sure his new friend was okay.
Aqualad searched his person for a moment, looking for any form of a communicator. However, he had no such luck. He calmed his troubled mind and remembered the lessons from his mentor and King. He surveys the area quickly, but all he found was sand and mountains in all directions. Aqualad let out an aggravated groan as he could not get his baring. "I am sorry, but I do not know where to start," Aqualad admitted in frustration.
Fenrir felt the wind whirled furiously towards the North-East direction; his sister hated being ignored when giving directions. Fenrir motioned for Aqualad to follow him with saying, "Come on, this way!" He started walking in the direction his sister was nagging him to go.
Aqualad followed right behind him but had to ask, "How do you know that is the best direction?" He had been saved by the teen, and he was thankful. However, he wasn't entirely sure the teen was not setting him up in an ambush.
"A gut feeling," Fenrir lied, flashing a smirk at the Atlantean teen; he continued on. The smile did little to calm Kaldur's nerves. As they began their trek through the desert, the sun was slowly starting its descent.
Biayla, September 4th 18:11 EDT
Inside a shack in the center of three ridges, Kid Flash had taken cover in said with an unknown blonde girl wearing green arm sleeves, belt, pants, boot, and a skin-tight crop top with a light green arrow on it. He gently called her, "Hey, beautiful. Wake up." He then gingerly shook her hoping to see if she was alive.
The blond let out a groan, and when she opened her eyes, she was greeted by a roof with a hole in it. She leans herself up and rubs her head, letting out a whine from the giant headache she had. She came to her sense when she saw a redheaded leering over her. Wally flashed her a smile, and that made her recoil and back away as she let out a cry of surprise. While the girl crawled away until her back was against the wall, Wally put his hands up to show he meant no harm. "Hey, it's okay. It's okay," he peacefully spoke. He began to rise and assured her by saying, "I won't hurt you. I 'm one of the good guys." He then struck a pose, jabbed his thumb into his chest, and declared, "You know, Kid Flash!" He flashed another smile, trying his best to woe the girl in front of him.
Artemis narrowed her eyes and warily said, "Seen Kid Flash on the news. He doesn't wear black." She usually saw him in a yellow and red costume. The teen in front of her wore an all-black suit with a red lightning bolt symbol on his chest.
Kid Flash looked down at his suit in confusion, "Uh, a little unclear on that myself." He had no idea how he got the black suit. He did have the same question to the attractive girl in front of him, "What about you? Green Arrow fixation?" He found her outfit fit her quite well, in all the right places.
Artemis was confused until she looked down. Now she was pissed and shouted out, "Who put me in this?" She thought it was a nice outfit, cute even. However, she had no recollection of putting it on. She felt violated.
Wally saw the metaphorical red flag and, to make sure no accusations were made, said, "Okay… I'm not touching that with a 10-foot pole, ah…." He quickly changed the conversation. He cleared his throat at the awkwardness before asking, "So, ah, do you know how to use that bow?" Kid Flash could tell it was a well-designed bow from the time he spent working and training with Speedy.
Artemis pushed off the wall behind her and answered, "Yeah, my dad taught me." Artemis had a moment of clarity as to who may have caused put her in this situation, "Dad! He must have this." She glared angrily at the bow and could see her father's smug expression, "Another of his stupid tests." She wondered how he was able to get her here without her mother flipping her lid.
"What kind of test?" Wally asked, finding it weird that a parent would send their kid to a harsh desert.
Artemis answered back coldly, "He probably wants me to kill you." Wally went wide-eyed at the statement. Would she try to kill him? Would he have to fight her?
The two heard a roar coming from the sky above them, followed by a sharp whistle. Kid Flash could tell it was an incoming missile that was about to level the small shack. Kid Flash didn't give Artemis time to argue as he grabbed her hand and blitzed out the door. They were lucky, for they only got a handful of feet before the missile impacted the shack and blew it up. The duo was launched by the explosion, and both let out yells of pain.
The two pulled themselves out of the sand they saw what attacked them. Three tanks were making their way over the dunes and a Humvee with a mounting gun on the top. The two recovered and made for an escape, the Humvee right on his tail. The gunner on the Humvee shouted out in Bialyan, "Don't let them escape!" He opened fire on the teens.
Lucky for the teens, the guy was a bad shot as the bullets either flew around them or made the sand jump. Artemis got tired of running as she pulled an arrow with an explosive tip out of her quiver, rolled forward, spun, and fired the arrow right at the Humvee. The arrow landed right underneath the Humvee, making it fly over them and flipping as it skipped across the ground. More gunfire came behind him, and Kid Flash could see the mounted guns on the tanks opening fire. Artemis took this chance to take cover behind some large rocks and fired arrows at the tanks. Kid Flash lowered his googles and sped in the tank's direction.
The tank's main cannon took aim and fired at Artemis' position. Kid Flash came to a stop by Artemis. She managed to fire off two arrows before she picked up bridal style. Artemis leg out a gasp of shock by the sudden action. Kid Flash didn't wait as he turned a raced down the canyon, explosions right on their tail. "Sorry. They got bigger arrows," Kid Flash said to Artemis as he legged it out of there.
The tanks altered their aim and continued to fire at the speedster. Artemis closed her eyes as the explosion sent up smoke and sand. Kid Flash was able to maneuver around explosions and eventually out of their range. Kid Flash ran out of the canyon and away from the danger.
Artemis opened her eyes upon hearing no more explosions and expressed gratitude towards her savior, "Thanks."
Kid Flash didn't slow down as he wanted to get as much distance as he could but replied, "Hey, I told you, good guy." Kid Flash realized he didn't even know the name of the girl he had saved, so he asked, "Now, ah, not to pry, but, ah, what's your name?" Kid Flash started to make his way up a slope of the canyon when he remembered what the girl spoke before, "Oh, and what's this about you killing me?" He hoped she didn't really mean it.
Meanwhile, out on her lonesome in the desert, M'Gann was flying around, smiling, unable to believe she was on Earth. Even though it wasn't like the TV shows she had seen and she was attacked last night by the bare-chested teen. She did have one problem, though, "But why can't I remember how I got here?" Her mind was scattered, but the teaching of her uncle told her what to do next.
She found a nice, secluded area and started to meditate, and she constantly repeated a single word in her mind, "Concentrate." She focused and said to herself, "Remember." She had hit a mental block at first, but when she concentrated enough, she broke through the block, and when she opened her eyes, they were completely white.
The first memory she recalled was from last night where a teen with Superman's symbol on his shirt. The teen ripped the shirt off with a growl before yelling as he charged her.
Another memory flashed in her mind. It was the feral teen from before standing in some sort of machine. However, the boy was not wild or attacking. In fact, he was pretty calm. A voice out of her vision said to her, "Good idea. Go!" From who she had no idea, that part of the memory was still fuzzy.
The teen with the Superman symbol on his shirt looked at her with a smile and said, "Be careful." She got a warm feeling in her chest from his concern.
The feeling was quickly diminished when a jacket-wearing teen walked into her vision. He leaned on the machine and voiced his concern, "I got a bad feeling about this." He looked out into the desert.
The jacketed teen was then called by someone out of her vision, "Get your head in the game. We need you to focus."
Another memory, and this time she was in a kitchen with the tray of cookies in her hands. The teen from before was with her, and he was looking to take a cookie. "Careful Superboy. They're hot," she warned. That was his name, Superboy. Superboy took the cookie from the tray and went to eat it.
Before Superboy could eat the cookie, a streak of gold and red snatched it from him. It turned out to be another teen wearing a costume. "Not as hot as you, babe," he flirted before eating the cookie in a single bite.
The teen was sweet, but his flirting was unbearable at times. "Thanks' Wally," she said awkwardly. That's um, sweet." Superboy glared at Wally before reaching for another cookie.
Wally swallowed and added to his flirtatious statement with his mouth still full, "Not as sweet as you, sugar." Waly flashed her his best suave smile and gave her a finger gun.
Before it could get more awkward for the Martian, a girl in a green outfit and a boy in a red and black costume came into her field of vision. The reason being was the girl told Wally, "Oh, grow up!" Artemis, the name popped in her head as soon as M'gann saw her. Artemis then swat Wally on the arm before taking a cookie herself.
"Team, report to the mission room," a deep voice called from a P.A. system. All the teens became serious at the man's voice.
The last memory had her facing the jacketed teen. He aggressively grasped her shoulder before roughly shoving her aside and then walking on a teleporter before disappearing in a light.
Her eyes went back to normal, and she cheered loudly, "I'm on a team!" She recalled some memories, memories consisting of mostly good people. "I think," she voiced her thought. She felt afraid of the one that shoved her aside. One thing that did clear up with her recalling part of her memories was "I have friends." She felt a skip in her heart as she thought about Superboy, "And a Superboy who might be…." She shook her head. She couldn't let her feelings distract her, "I need to find him…Um them." Okay, so maybe she wanted to make sure Superboy, in particular, was okay.
She started to fly again while projecting her thoughts, "Hello? Um, Team?" She didn't receive anything back. "Maybe they're just out of my range," she concluded and continued to search for her Team.
Meanwhile, Fenrir was still following the wind, and Kaldur was right beside him. To pass the time, Kaldur had taken to asking questions, just like right now, "How did you get your powers?" Kaldur would feel more comfortable knowing who he was with.
Fenrir looked over his shoulder as he answered, "Been like this all my life." While vague, it did its job as Kaldur nodded. Fenrir decided to ask a question of his own, "What's it like living under the sea?"
Kaldur snorted as he laughed at the question. It was a common one that was asked all the time by people of the surface. "It's a magical place. Where the creatures of the sea and the people of Atlantis live in harmony," he said in nostalgia. "I cannot even begin to describe the beauty of such a place and do it justice," Kaldur stated as he smiled.
"Huh, I get what you mean. New York will always be home for me," replied Fenrir as he walked down a dune.
Kaldur followed behind Fenrir and, as he slid down the dune, asked, "You live in the city?
Fenrir snorted at the guess. Whenever he said, New York, people always assumed he talked about the city. "No." There was more to New York than the damn city," Fenrir grumbled out. "Upstate New York. In the mountains and forests. If you stand alone quietly in the forest and listen close, as the wind sweep through the trees, you can hear the voice of nature," Fenrir stated. His mother and father had told him how nature preserved the ancient tales and magics of his people. Kaldur moved in closer to listen; he found the tale that fascinating. "Someone once told me nature held more power than anyone could possibly imagine. Kinda like the sea," Fenrir shot the Atlantean a toothy grin.
Aqualad enjoyed listening to the feral teen talk. The two had a shared interest in nature, and the conversation the two exchanged was refreshing. The bluntness that the teen talked with was something that reminded him of his King. It led to Aqualad wondering if they shared another aspect in common, "Pardon my… bluntness. But with your powers. Are you perhaps a hero?"
Fenrir waved him off, "Nah." Fenrir continued to follow the shifting air.
"Oh," Kaldur said in shock. The air shifted, moving in a different direction than before. Aqualad felt a tad uneasy as his hand slid to his Water-Bearers, "Then are you …?"
"Capes and spandex aren't my thing. Stuff doesn't breath really well," Fenrir answered jokingly. "Besides, who'd want a monster for a hero," Fenrir finished grimly, knowing if he showed his true power what the reaction might be.
Aqualad grew a sympathetic look. The teen saw his powers as monstrous and dark. However, that didn't mean they could be used for good. "Not all monsters do monstrous things," Aqualad offered Fenrir. Kaldur knew some incredible people in all shapes, sizes, and powers. He wanted to comfort his friend and tell him it didn't matter what he looked like. All that matter was their intentions.
Fenrir stopped walking and turned around to his traveling companion and said, "Thanks, maybe after we get you ou…" Suddenly the wind shifted violently, cutting off his thought. "Something's happening," Fenrir interjected before taking off in the direction his sister was telling him to go.
Aqualad was puzzled by the change in direction. Wondering what was going on, he asked, "What's happening?"
"Trouble," was Fenrir's response, not slowing down.
The duo of Kid Flash and Artemis came to a halt in an area of the desert covered by surrounding high slopes. After running for a little over a half-hour, Kid Flash needed to stop. He gently places Artemis on her feet before he started to pant, putting his hands on his knees. "Sorry. Running on empty," he said in exhaustion. He wiped the sweat from his brow before added, "Don't think I've eaten in a while." Kid Flash pulled open a small storage cupboard that was in the forearm of his right glove. "Been out here over 24 hours. Or my cupboards wouldn't be so bare," Kid Flash noted; it at least gave them a time frame as to how long they had been out in the desert.
Suddenly, something came crashing down on top of them with a thud. Sand and debris splashed in the air making the two heroes cover their faces. The smoke dissipated, revealing a snarling, shirtless Superboy. The Kryptonian let out a growl before lashing out a backhand that connected with Kid Flash's face. Kid Flash was sent careening into one of the slopes. With one of his targets gone, he turned to Artemis. With a growl, he lunged for her.
Artemis backflipped away to get out of Superboy's reach. She took an explosive arrow out the moment she landed, drew, and fired it at the Kryptonian. The explosives did little to deter the rabid teen. All that did was piss him off even more. Artemis continued firing explosive arrows as she retreated backward. The explosive arrows did little to slow down Superboy as he charged through three exploding arrows.
Artemis had to roll out of the way as Superboy leaped at her. Seeing he missed, he let out a roar before he jumped at her. Artemis fired one more explosive arrow at Superboy, but it did not stop his descent. Artemis was landed on by Superboy. She was in a daze and, not taking notice of Superboy grab her by the throat. Superboy lifted her by her throat, and as she chocked for air, he reeled his fist back.
Superboy whipped his fist forward, and Artemis closed her eyes, waiting for the pain to come. The only thing she felt was being jostled and then landing on her bottom. She opened her eyes seeing someone with black hair and the back of someone in a blue shirt.
"Now, I don't think that how you ask someone for a date, big guy," Fenrir said in a joking, strained voice. Fenrir was not expecting the strength he felt from the teen. Fenrir's muscles shook and ached from the strain. Fenrir twisted the wrist of the hand that held Artemis, making Superboy cry in pain and drop Artemis. Artemis quickly ran for her bow, not wanting to get between those two men. Fenrir hip tossed the feral Kryptonian away, making Superboy skid headfirst in the sand. Superboy pulled himself out of the sand with a growl before charging at Fenrir. Fenrir waited patiently for Superboy to come for him. His patience was rewarded as Fenrir drove a knee into Superboy's chin. Superboy's head snapped up as a single eye glared down at Fenrir.
Fenrir followed up with a quick three-punch combo to Superboy's face. Superboy roared in anger, feeling pain from the new target. He wildly threw multiple lashes out at the wolf teen, but Fenrir dodged and weaved out of the clone's range. Superboy angrily charged, wrapping Fenrir in a bear hug and charged towards the nearest slopes. Fenrir pounded futility on the clone's back.
Kid Flash recovered from the hit received and what he watched was a spectacle. The two were like titans clashing for superiority. A hand was placed on his shoulder, causing him to yelp in surprise and turn around. Before he could scream, a firm hand covered his mouth but seeing who the hand belonged to made him relax.
Aqualad nodded his head and let his hand drop. Immediately he was assaulted by questions from Kid Flash, "Kaldur! Man, am I glad to see you! Who's the guy that saved my skin? Do you know the shirtless guy? Where've you been? Are you okay?" Aqualad was glad to see his friend; a familiar face made him calmer about the situation. Aqualad made to answer, but the sound of an impact stopped him. A roar filled in the air as both he and Kid Flash saw an object sail in the air before arcing down into the sand.
Superboy crashed into the ground with a grunt. His animalistic mind was urging him to kill the threat that had put itself between him and the arrow girl. After he smashed the threat into the rock, he wrapped his hands around the threat's neck. He squeezed with everything he had. The threat tried breaking his hold with his forearm to no avail. Superboy kept pressing until he saw the teen's blue eyes turn amber. The five o'clock shadow became thicker, the hair on his cheeks sprouted, hair grew on his arms, and his fingernails became claws. Then with the fury of a trapped animal, the threat swung an uppercut that made his skull rattle.
Kid Flash and Aqualad shot their gaze where Superboy had come from. Aqualad now understood why Fenrir called himself a monster. The teen looked to be a mixture of beast and man now. "Did you know he could do…that?" Kid Flash asked shakily, fear replacing admiration for his new savior. Aqualad shook his head, a neutral expression on his face.
Superboy righted himself up to his feet. He let out a roar of anger. Fenrir replied with one of his own, only his more bestial. Before the two could fight a second round, a loud whistling noise came from the sky. A missile impacted the ground, causing an explosion that shot both Fenrir and Superboy back.
Artemis had ducked behind a rock during Fenrir and Superboy's struggle. Now that she saw that missiles were coming from the tanks from before, she decided to intervene. She fired an arrow, but they were too far out of range for her bow. Superboy was quick to recover and leaped at the closest tank. He landed on the base of the tank before gripping the barrel of the cannon. Superboy's grip made the barrel bend, and with a twist, he tore it clean off. A soldier had opened the hatch and fired the machine gun at Superboy.
The bullets that hit Superboy either crumbled against his skin or ricocheted off him. Unaffected by the bullets, Superboy swatted the mounted gun clean off the hatch and hoisted the soldier by his chest before throwing him aside.
Superboy dug his fingers into the turret of the tank. He struggled for a moment, but eventually, the turret came off. Superboy threw it off the body of the tank, making the men inside scramble to leave. The second tank aimed its cannon at Superboy and fired directly at him. Superboy let out a scream of pain as he soared in the air before grunting on his landing. He recovered before leaping in the air and landing on the second tank.
Fenrir shook the cobwebs from his head and dulled the ringing in his ears. He watched as Superboy started to tear apart the tank. He noticed a blond hair teen come up next to him and ask in worry, "Whose side is he on?"
Fenrir answered her question as Superboy furiously punches at the tank's armor, "I think his own." Fenrir watched as Superboy boy ripped the turret off the tank.
Kid Flash sped next to the duo, picking up Artemis and saying, "Time to go. Come on, new guy." Kid Flash ran out of the area in a mad dash.
Fenrir didn't have a chance to agree as he tried to follow behind. He was nowhere near as fast as the young speedster and was left in the dust. He was able to catch up to Aqualad, who was starting to look paler than before and was sweating profusely.
It turned out Kid Flash didn't get far as Fenrir was able to track his scent. The duo of Aqualad and Fenrir slid down the slope where Kid Flash and Artemis were. Aqualad panted for a moment before swallowing and said, "Everyone okay?"
Kid Flash groan as he rubbed his stomach, "I'm running on empty here, but besides that. Yeah, I'm good."
"Just happy to be breathing," Artemis said before flicking her ponytail.
Fenrir, still in his bestial form, started to shake like a wet dog. "I'm looking forward to going to a place with no sand," he ground out irritatingly. Sand and fur didn't mix really well.
The foursome's breather was cut short as two drones flew overhead, raining down gunfire. Luckily none of them were hit, but the drones came back for another sweep. Everyone took that as their cue to scatter. Kid Flash outran the bullets, Artemis rolled to cover, Fenrir followed, and Aqualad collapsed into the sand.
Kid Flash skidded to a stop and watched as the shots hit the ground, kicking up sand. The trail got closer to his friend. "Aqualad!" Kid Flash shouted and started to run. His speed faltered, making him gasp and slowly sink to his knees, then to all fours. He gasped as he looked up to watch the bullets nearly there. Kid Flash reached a hand out, trying desperately to save his friend. His wish was granted as Fenrir jumped in front of Kaldur.
Fenrir covered his face with his forearms as the bullets reached them. Fenrir's skin was ripped apart as the bullets tore through him. Fenrir grunted from the bullets until one tore into his side, making him spin with its momentum. He laid in a bloody heap next to Aqualad.
Artemis let out a gasp in horror. What the teen had done was very brave, and it had almost cost him his life. It was heroic. Inspired, she pulled an arrow from her quiver and fired it. The drones were too agile for the arrows. They easily outmaneuvered the arrow. The drones came back around for another sweep, but they suddenly stopped. Artemis was ready to fire another arrow, but it looked to be no longer needed. She gave a perplexed look at the drones before she heard a female voice in her head say, 'Don't worry, I got this!' The invisible force then smashes the drones together.
The explosion the occurred was bright in the evening sky. Suddenly from the explosion came a recognizable but different figure. Kid Flash managed to make his way to Kaldur and Fenrir. He was glad to see his friend was unharmed, but he couldn't bear to look at the bloody mess of the werewolf teen.
From the sky descended a familiar being that knelt down next to Kaldur and the other teen. She kneeled down and began checking them over. Seeing the green skin and red X over a black skinsuit made him swell with relief. "Oh, thank god. J'onn. We could really use the hel…" he started, but something was off. He squinted his eyes and, on closer inspection, found the body to be too feminine for the Manhunter. "Uh, are you Manhunter?" he asked, not sure if J'onn decided to try a different look. What he didn't understand was why he found the body very attractive.
Miss Martian gave a look of surprise before shaking her head, "I'm not my uncle, J'onn." M'gann was trying to assess the two downed teens.
Wally looked bewildered; he didn't know J'onn had a niece. One that was so incredibly hot.
Behind M'gann, Artemis stood over her and pulled the string of her bow. An arrow with a sharp tip gleamed in the sun that was ready to be launched into M'gann's head. "Are we sure she's on our side? Could be a trap," she asked Wally while getting her threat across.
She gestures towards Kid Flash, "You're Kid Flash, Wally." She follows up with her eyes glancing at Artemis, "And your Artemis." She received a narrow gaze back from Artemis, proving she wasn't trusted. With an annoyed scuff, M'gann said, "If you have a better idea, then go for it. Otherwise, let me help them." She saw indecision on both of the teens who didn't remember her. "Please," she pled, her eyes big and begging the teen speedster.
Artemis looked at Wally; it was his call. Whatever he decided, she would follow his lead. Wally looked to Artemis, then back to the new Martian. He was usually not the one to make decisions. It was usually Barry that did all the decision-making. He put his head down and weighed the options. He was in unknown territory, with an unknown enemy after him. He was going to need as many allies as possible. He looked at M'Gann and said, "Do what you can." Artemis eased off her bow and nodded her head with her approval.
M'Gann began looking over Aqualad, both physically and mentally. To her relief, Kaldur was not severely hurt, "He's just severally dehydrated. All he needs is rest and a lot of water." She smiled lightly, knowing her friend would be okay.
Wally let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. His friend was alright, he was going to need to be put in a tank of water, but he was fine. Wally then looked over at the guy Kaldur had brought with him. He was still down and leaned his head in the teen's direction, "Can you do anything for him?" M'gann went over to the teen to look over but got a freight when he sprung up suddenly. She let out a scream, and so did her other two friends.
A sharp hiss of pain made Fenrir righted himself up, "Anyone get the number of that bus?" He rubbed the spot where he was severely wounded. He looked up and turned to see the horrified expressions of the three other teens. "What?" he asked, confused.
Artemis was the first the recover. She pointed at him shakily and shouted, "You…you got shot! How are you still alive!?" She saw him get riddled with bullets. He should be dead!
Wally rushed over and put his hands out to stop the teen from moving, "Hey, easy! You shouldn't be moving. We got to check…" Fenrir waved over as he got to his feet.
M'gann felt a pit form in her stomach as she watched bullets push out his wounds. Blood snaked across his exposed flesh and dripped into the sand. Memories flashed in her head, remembering all the incredible and unnatural things the teen could do. "He's survived much worse," M'gann revealed.
Fenrir's eyes landed on the green-skinned girl. He raised an eyebrow at the unnatural skin color, "I know you?" She seemed to know him, but he never recalled meeting someone so peculiar.
M'gann nodded and said, "I know all of you. Actually…" She had to drop the bombshell, "We all know each other. That's how I know your names." She then puts a hand out towards, "Even yours, Fenrir." She then unconsciously shied away from him. She smiled awkwardly as she to Wally, "I remember making cookies, and you uh…liked them."
Artemis looked over at Fenrir and asked suspiciously, "You know her?"
Fenrir chuckled as he shook his head, "Nope, I definitely would've remembered someone with green skin." He gave Artemis a bewildered look.
"How 'bout you? Wally?" Artemis put an emphasis on his name. She couldn't believe a guy who saved Central City multiple times had a goofy name like that.
Wally thought Artemis asked him suspiciously, so he eagerly blurted out, "No, I-I swear, beautiful. Never seen her before in my life. At least…" He hoped he didn't blow his chance with Artemis. The girl was something alright.
As Wally went on a tangent Miss Martian heavily sighed before saying, "You all lost your memories, too." She frowned, seeing as no one had retained any memories of their time together.
Fenrir nodded his head in agreement and revealed what he knew, "I've lost about six months of memory." He then turned fully towards M'Gann with his arms crossed. "That sound about right?" he asked. His ears then picked up engines in the distance. They needed to get away from the fighting. He went over, picked Kaldur up, and slung him over his shoulder, letting out a grunt with the extra weight.
M'gann agreed with a nod and turned behind her when she felt the ground shake. It was coming in the direction of an explosion with multiple convoys heading towards it. They needed to get somewhere safe. "Come on. I'll fill you in as we go." M'gann led the way as she went in the opposite direction of the enemy. While M'gann walked, she explained that there were two more people to add to their group, "Robin and Superboy need our help." The trio of Fenrir, Kid Flash, and Artemis followed right behind her. Unbeknownst to M'gann, she was leaving behind the object of her desire.
Wally had one sarcastic remark and one question to ask, "Of course, Robin and Super, what now?"
Back at the explosion site, Superboy was currently screaming and roaring at the people. He was like a rabid dog, attacking everything and anything that moved. He had been lassoed multiple times by his wrists. The ropes were handled by numerous Biyalan soldiers holding him. Superboy gripped the left rope and gave it a firm tug making the soldiers holding it go flying. The soldiers were dwindling fast.
Behind the soldier, two individuals stepped out of one of the Humvees. One of them was Simon Jones or as he preferred Psimon. Psimon is a pale bald man. His brain is visible through a clear dome over it, with some strips of skin over the dome. It was easy to distinguish that his powers revolved around his brain. Psimon had the powers of telepathy, mind control, mental detection; he could fire mental blasts to attack a person's brain and even produce psychic shields to prevent his own brain from being attacked by another telepath. Three red lines are seen on each cheek. He dressed in a gray trench coat with a hood. Beneath the coat, he wears a black shirt and gray pants.
The second individual that emerged from Humvee was a sharp-dressed man. His hair was blond and styled in a short crew cut. His eyes were concealed by a pair of black lens sunglasses. He wore a black two-piece suit, with a white button shirt and a black tie to finish it off. His jaw was square and had a permanent scowl. His name is Vaughn (1), and right now, he was irritated beyond measure. "Hurry up, big-headed Meat. The strong Meat is making quick work of the weak Meat," he said in a gruff irritated fashion. He crossed his arm over his chest. The people, or Meat he and his siblings like to call them, were taking too long. They needed to get back on schedule. The prison shouldn't be kept waiting.
Psimon scowled at the remarks made towards him. He didn't understand why his boss allowed these individuals to intrude. However, he did as ordered; his boss would not take kindly to him, straining relations with her cohorts. "Watch what you say, or I'll leave you brain dead in the middle of the desert," Psimon said towards the well-dressed man. Oddly enough, Psimon wondered how the man could stand being in this heat without so much as a bead of sweat rolling down his brow.
Vaughn pulled a Glock from his inner jacket pocket and pointed it at Simon. "Just try, Meat," he challenged. Psimon shot his hand out towards Vaughn. The two stared at each other before another set of soldiers were thrown through the air. Vaughn moved his gun upward and gave the order, "Just turn his mind off. We have a schedule to keep." This confrontation wasn't worth it, besides Meat was beneath him. He slipped his pistol back into his shoulder hostler.
Psimon glowered at the man in that suit. He tsked as he cast his hand towards Superboy, "I don't think there's much mind left to turn off." Psimon used his telepathy to attack the brain of an enraged Superboy. "But… be still," Psimon commanded. Superboy was about to toss around the soldiers again when he paused. His expression changed from rage to fixed. His eyes closed, and he fell face forward, asleep. He was quickly rounded up and toss in the back of a convoy truck.
Bialya, September 4th, 20:13 EDT
The sun had fallen, and the moon took the place of the sun. The star shined bright in the dark, clear sky. With the fall of the sun came the cold chill of the desert. The cold air of the desert night sent a cold chill through all the teens. The gang of five were trudging along the sand. M'Gann and Kid Flash took the lead as Fenrir was in the middle with Aqualad still unconscious on his shoulder, and Artemis acted as rear guard. Artemis, however, was more focused on trying to warm her body. Her costume did little to guard against the elements. She shivered some more until it drove her over the edge, "Are you close to where we need to go?" The mixture of cold and walking endlessly made her irritable.
Miss Martian looked back behind her and called out, "We're almost there. I remember something important in this direction!"
Artemis purser her lips at the martian's words. Another quick breeze made her teeth chatter. She rubbed hands across the exposed skin of her upper arm, trying to fight off the chill. A large object fell on her head. In a start, she quickly swatted at the thing that fell on her. She quickly discovered it to be Fenrir's jacket. Her eyes widened before gazing at the teen wolf. "To keep you warm," was the reply, but he didn't look back at her.
Artemis took little hesitation to put the jacket on. The warmth brought instant relief. However, she was worried about the teen carrying Aqualad. "What about you?" she asked.
Fenrir waved her off, "I don't get cold so easily." Being raised in the cold mountains in New York helped with that.
Wally didn't want to be outdone and made a move the take his suit off but stopped abruptly, "Uhhhh, I offer something, but I'm not wearing anything underneath." He gave a sheepish look.
M'gann called from the front, "We're almost at the destination. We should be seeing…" Gunfire cut her off. The four looked in the direction. "Wally, go up ahead, we'll catch up!" M'gann shouted as she started to fly in the direction of the gunfire.
Wally looked at Fenrir and Artemis, hesitant to just leave the two of them. "We're fine! Go! Someone might need help," Fenrir promised. Seeing the no deceit in the expression, Wally moved his goggles over his eyes and was gone in an instant. Fenrir adjusted Kaldur on his shoulder and peered at Artemis as he said, "Come on, arrow girl, they're going to need back up." He then started sprinting in the direction the gunfire was coming from, Artemis right on his heels.
When the duo arrived at the top of one of the dunes. They watched as Kid Flash grabbed a kick from a Bialyan soldier. Kid Flash quickly spun like a top while still holding the soldier. Kid Flash then let the soldier go making him fly into two more soldiers that tried to sneak up on him. One man was making a break for it, and Artemis responded by firing an arrow at him. The arrow tip exploded, and out of it came grappling cables that wrapped around the man's legs. Artemis grew a victorious smirk and walked down the dune. Fenrir adjusted Kaldur on his shoulder and
Robin saw a familiar face amongst the people that joined the fight and greeted him, "KF! Man, it's good to see a familiar face." Kid Flash was just relieved to see Robin and clasped hands with him.
Wally was happy to see his friend but had to know one thing, "Hey, Rob. Memory loss?"
"Six months," Robin replied. While the reunion was great, they were still unconscious enemy soldiers around him. "Let's hogtie these creeps and compare notes." Robin went to start doing that as he noticed Fenrir placing Kaldur on the piece of tech that he had marked on his wrist map. "Hey! Kaldur's here too? Man, who else is here?" Robin asked. His attention then drifted to the newcomer putting Kaldur down. "Who's the tourist?" Robin asked Kid Flash.
Wally was about to answer but never got the chance, "Who're you calling a tourist?" Fenrir replied for himself. He strode over Robin and stared down at him challengingly. Robin narrowed his eye at the old teen, not appreciating the disrespect. Fenrir sneered as he looked at the Boy Wonder, "What about you, kid? Get lost on your way to the playground?" Fenrir didn't have to prove himself. This kid acted just like his third oldest brother.
Kid Flash saw the tensions about to erupt and got between the two, "Woahwoahwoah, easy! Rob, this guy saved our skins. He's on our side." Wally smiled reassuringly. Robin glared at Fenrir, who scowled right back before he went to tie up the soldiers. As Wally watched Robin walked away, he turned, seeing Fenrir check on Kaldur. Wally let out a sigh of relief to avoid more conflict.
After several minutes all the soldiers were bound and gagged. The Team gathered around M'gann. What she had revealed started to metaphorically connect the dots. "So we're a team?" asked Robin.
"Explains why I'm halfway across the world," Fenrir remarked. He wasn't interested in leaving the United States.
"Same," Artemis added.
M'gann added, what was in mind, the most important part, "The five of us and Superboy."
Robin pulled a scrap of cloth he had collected when he encountered the rapid teen earlier today, "Then this must be his." All that was on it was a red shield and "S".
M'gann quickly snatched it from Robin's hands and excitedly said, "Yes! Did you see him?" She looked at Robin, all smiles and expecting.
Artemis cut in, "I think we did."
"Feral boy?" Wally asked for assurance they were talking about the same person.
Fenrir had the decency to be embarrassed as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I think he was the guy that I tussled with," Fenrir said bashfully. "I may have thrown him into a rockface." He gave a slight chuckle to show he was sorry.
M'gann covered her mouth in alarm. "Yeah! Some teammate! He attacked us!" Wally yelled while rubbing his jaw where the rapid Superboy had hit him.
M'gann was about to go to Superboy's defense but was beat to it by Artemis, "He didn't know who we are." She then brought up a major valid point. She jabbed her thumb at her chest while hollering, "I don't know who we are!"
Fenrir rubbed his chin in thought while humming. "Does anyone remember anything?" he asked the group.
Robin was the first answer, "I remember Batman ordering radio silence." Then Robin led to the deduction of, "Our team must work for him."
Unbeknownst to the group, Fenrir's face dropped. If that was true, and he was already mid-mission. That was not good. He was unaware of what type of persona he had chosen, what he had revealed as his background. It was too many factors that were unknown. His teacher would have his head for his lax preparation. Fenrir was broken from his thoughts by Kid Flash.
"How do you know we don't work for my mentor?" Kid Flash challenged as he touched his chest on the lightning bolt symbol. There was a low set of beeps before the costume suddenly changed from a black and red scheme to yellow and red. "Whoa. This is so cool," Wally exclaimed as he continued to hit the button and change his costume's color scheme like a child.
Fenrir raised an eyebrow at the young teen's antics. "If your mentor is anything like you, I doubt it." That got a chuckle from the group.
Out of curiosity or jealousy, all the teens touch their costumes' icon to see if it changed color. Fenrir crossed his arms over his chest, chuckled in amusement, then spoke, "Looks like Kid is the only one with the cool costume." He received a glare from the rest of the Team.
"Why don't you try it?" Wally asked.
Fenrir gestured to his outfit while inquiring, "Does this look like a pair of tights to you?" Wally shrugged his shoulders and continued to play with the button.
After the fifteenth time of hearing the beeping coming from Wally, Artemis snapped at him, "Will you stop touching yourself!" Fenrir couldn't help himself but snort. Artemis then looked at him quizzically, but from his face, she understood. With a scoff, she mockingly answered, "Oh. HaHa. Grow up!" She heard the insistent beeping of Wally playing with the button again and, aggravatingly, said, "We need our memories back!"
M'gann pursed her lips as she had an idea of how to do that. The problem was the reaction she might face. What she was about to do could be intrusive. She also feared what the Team would discover about her. However, that didn't matter right now. She had someone important to find. 'To help Superboy,' she assured herself with conviction. She opened her mind and brought the others with her.
The mind of Miss Martian made all the teens look around and see the memories that swarmed in her mind. The memories were on display shattered crystals that floated about in the air, and each of them gave off a purple hue, making the area reflect the color. Fenrir saw a few had him in them. Miss Martian explains what is happening in their minds, 'I brought you into my mind. To share what I've remembered so far. But I need your help.' Miss Martian appeared with her hood up in a burst of light and revealed the plan she had formed. She cupped her hands close to her heart, feeling scared. Miss Martian didn't want to look them in the face in fear of seeing the horror-stricken faces of the Team. "Together, our broken memories can form a whole if you open your minds to mine," she gave a reassuring smile to ease any troubles the Team might have.
Artemis reeled back in horror, and flimsy put crossed her arms over her chest in a feeble attempt to feel protected, "You want to paw through our private thoughts?"
M'gann put her hands up, showing that was not her intention, "I have no wish to intrude, but-."
"I'm with green leotard girl. No offense, I don't know you and sure as hell don't want you in my head," Fenrir stated his stance on the plan. He didn't need the secrets of Fables and his mission coming out in the open.
Robin interjected to Miss Martian's defense, "Hey, lay off! She's trying to help!" He narrowed his eyes at Fenrir, who returned it in kind. He looked at the others who were looking for more of an explanation. "She needs to hack our minds to grok what happened to us," his explanation was much of comfort as the duo of Artemis and Wally. Robin didn't seem to notice as he turned back to Miss Martian and assured her, "Got it. Go." Robin had no problem with the probing of his mind. He had been trained in ways to lock away parts of his mind so even a Martian could access it.
Wally needed no such assurances, "My brains all yours." The speedster grinned flirtatiously but wasn't done. He found time to stroke his ego, "Try not to let its brilliance overwhelm you." Fenrir and Artemis gave him disbelieving stares. Fenrir bet there wasn't so much as a speck of intelligence in the speedster.
Robin vocalized Fenrir's thoughts, "Or underwhelm you." Robin may have joked, but he was concerned about the lack of enthusiasm about the plan. "Hey, why isn't anyone ever just whelmed?" he asked everyone on their hesitation.
Fenrir interjected, "I'll tell you why bird boy. Someone digging into my brain doesn't make me all that comfortable. She could just make us all vegetables and be on her merry way!"
Robin's eyes narrowed, and he responded, "Got some trust issues there, new guy? Got something to hide?"
"I don't trust people I don't know. As for the "something to hide," you're one to talk. How 'bout you pull that mask and let us see your face?" Fenrir challenged the teen, and all Robin could was leer at Fenrir. Fenrir, however, was not unreasonable. He did say one thing as he pointed at the unconscious Kaldur, "He's the only one I trust. He had my back since I woke up here."
Robin looked over at the unconscious Kaldur. The teen looked worse for wear and had been unconscious since their arrival. Robin did voice his thoughts, "How did you find one another?"
"I found in the sand, half-dead."
Robin gave a glare that would have made his mentor proud. "Is that the story you're going with?" Robin questioned accusingly.
Fenrir's eyes widen in surprise before narrowing them, "You calling me a liar?"
"I know people like you. And you're all the same. Just another monster hiding in the shadows looking for an excuse to lie, steal or kill," Robin challenged as he pulled two small collapsible batons from his utility belt.
"You don't know me," Fenrir replied, shaking his head. His father told him that people would always associate him and his family as monsters due to his past. He had heard all before from a lot more fearsome beings than the small Mundy bird boy.
Before either teen could rush one another, a wall of sand shoot up to deter them. Miss Martian floated above them, her eyes green, and in an authoritative voice yelled, "Enough! We can't fight each other!" Fenrir stared at her with a plain expression on his face. Robin frowned but nodded his head and relaxed his stance.
Wally spoke from his spot, "Guys, we don't have time for this! We got a teammate out there that needs our help." He pursed his lips while rubbing the back of his head, not entirely how he ended up as the voice of reason. "Once we get our heads on straight, we can figure out what we do. Until then…" He then gestured for everyone to cool their rising tempers.
Artemis saw the verbal confrontation escalating and shakingly back away. Wally appeared by her side. With a reassuring smile and grasping her hand, he reassured her, "Last six months only. And only what you need." She gave the Martian her terms, and there would be no leeway.
"Fine," Fenrir grunted but nodded his head. He could agree to that; six months was fine. He needed his mind to be whole.
M'gann nodded and started channeling her power. Green astral hands shot out from her head and hands. The hands reached out and touch the top of the other teen's heads before melding into their brains. Their minds were assaulted by rapidly flowing images before a voice broke through the surface. "The watchtower detected an immense power surge in the Bialyan desert," in their mind's eyes like a video Batman was giving them a debrief on a mission. "Spectral analysis revealed elements, non-terrestrial in origin," Batman spoke in front of a holographic map that was displaying a pulsating red dot. The dot was where they would be going. "Find out what happened at that site. What landed there," Batman gave the teams objective. All of the Team was there listening intently.
Fenrir in the back, leaning against the wall, was the first to ask, "What can we expect in this place."
Batman shot a glare at the teen, still not happy about his unauthorized trip to Philadelphia. Batman had not discovered much, just news about a new crime boss muscling his way into town. The only person Fenrir talked to was Zatara, and even his lips were sealed. He had tried being patient, but the teen had worn his down to nothing. He continued on with the mission's parameters, "Bialya is a rogue state ruled by Queen Bee." Batman pulled up a remote and pressed it. The map disappeared, and in its place was a picture of a beautiful dark-skinned woman with confidant blue eyes. Queen Bee's hair was long but was pulled back by a golden diadem on her forehead. She also wears golden stinger-shaped earrings and an armband on her right forearm. Her clothing matched her regal status as she wore a gray mini-skirt dress with black pants and high-heel boots. Around her shoulders hangs a translucent pale blue veil.
"It is not a member of the league's UN Charter. All communications are subject to interception." Batman warned as the picture back into a map. "Maintain radio silence at all times," Batman issued a command that was not to be ignored.
Suddenly the memory flashed, and the teen was now in the desert but still heard Batman's voice, "You'll land in Kourak. On Bialya's border. Two clicks from the hot zone."
Robin was looking through a pair of binoculars as he examined the area. Seeing no one in sight, Robin informed the others, "All clear." He looked towards the group and saw the group already around him with Superboy carrying a machine tied to his back.
The memories shifted again, this time both Artemis and Robin stealthily upon a camp. "The Bialyans control the site," Artemis informed. Looking down the site was a single tent with a handful of guards outside the tent.
The memories flicked back to Superboy setting down the machine he was carrying. "Set up here," Kaldur ordered.
"So far, the coast is clear," Fenrir called down from atop the ridge.
"Keep your eyes peel!" Kaldur said. In front of him, Superboy turned a dial and the machine he was carrying revealed to be a computer.
Robin was on it in a flash and was quickly typing away. "We'll be up and running in no time," he guaranteed, not looking away from the screen.
Kid Flash came over and looked over his shoulder, reading the findings. "Jackpot! The site's lousy with zeta beam radiation," he spoke excitingly.
Robin looked over his shoulder and reported his findings, "Detecting non-terrestrial trace elements from the tent."
Miss Martian walked over and offered her help, "I'll check it out in camouflage mode."
"Good idea. Go," Aqualad agreed, then ordered.
The memory shifted to M'gann's point of view, and she was surrounded by the Team. Superboy stared at her with a smile and encouragingly said, "Be careful." M'gann felt her chest swell with warmth at his words.
Aqualad called out to her making her turn towards him, "Maintain telepathic contact."
"I got a bad feeling about this," Fenrir ominously spoke, and the wind suddenly shifted, making his words all the more eerie.
Aqualad whirled around and spoken to Fenrir with a hint of anger in his voice, "Get your head in the game. We need you to focus. You're already on thin ice with the league. Don't make me give them an excuse to throw you out!" Fenrir looked at him blankly, seemingly unaffected by his words. He looked at Miss Martian, who took a step back at the teen, the fear from before still present. Fenrir then walked away, letting the Team do as it wished.
The memory stopped, and everyone stood around confused. Fenrir spoke first with his concern, "Is that it? What happened after?"
"I don't know! That's the last thing I, we remember," M'gann said in worry. Kid Flash and Artemis looked down at their intertwined hands before reeling back from each other. Artemis shyly looked away while Kid Flash played it off like nothing happened.
They would have continued down memory lane, but Kaldur started to convulse and let out multiple wet coughs. Fenrir was the first to dash to his side and started to look him over. "Hey!Hey!Hey! What's wrong with him!?" He turned Kaldur onto his side to make sure the teen didn't choke on his own tongue. M'gann was over by his side examining Kaldur through her telepathy. He was barely alive.
Kid Flash got a look and knew exactly what was wrong, "It's his physiology. The desert and Atlanteans don't mix. The lack of water's killing him."
Robin immediately came up with a plan and started dictating orders, "Miss M, call the bio-ship!"
M'gann placed one of her hands on her head to help her concentrate her calling of the bioship. She received no answer. "It's too far out of range, but you can get him there fast," she told the Team before speaking to Wally.
Wally had two problems with that request, "He's too heavy, and I'm too low on fuel." His voice was thick with exhaustion while he continued to make his point as he jabbed a thumb in Artemis' direction, "Right now, I couldn't even carry her." He tried to make light of the severe situation.
Artemis let out a scoff as she brushed aside Wally's hand. "Why can't you just levitate him back to the ship?" she asked.
M'gann found that suggestion unacceptable someone else needed her more. "I can't. I have to find Superboy," she told them, her voice thick with worry. She stood up before speaking again, "Six months ago, he didn't exist. He has no memories, just animal impulses." She was worried about him being out in the desert, acting like a wild animal that lashed out at anything that moved. "I'm the only one who can help him," she solemnly said.
The group looked at each other, feeling both empathy and frustration towards the girl. Wally tried to reason with her, stating, "Superboy is indestructible. Just ask those tanks." He then gestured to Atlantean on the ground being tended by Fenrir, "It's Aqualad that needs your help. Like, now." He stopped his pleading as his resolve began to crumble.
At the site of interest, more Bialyan soldiers patrolled the area, all armed to the teeth. Inside the tent, a whirling sound could be heard, followed by a crackle of electricity. Inside, scientists stood in front of a machine that was continued to a round cage with a giant metal sphere in it. The machine whirled, and then electricity shocked the sphere.
The sphere let out a mechanic screech like two girders grinding against one another. Across from where the sphere was held, Superboy was locked onto a table by his hands. He was being shocked, but it only lasts a few seconds before it stopped. One scientist wrote some notes onto a notepad before directing another scientist, "Raise to shock level four." Superboy was shocked again and screamed from the pain.
As if in response, the trapped sphere whirled and spun in its prison. Psimon and Vaughn walked up to the sphere leisurely, and with glee, both stated, "Fascinating/Excellent." Both ignored the agonizing screams of the Kryptonian.
Back with the Team, M'gann was about to comply when she groaned and grabbed her head in pain. Telepathically she heard the pained screams of Superboy, "No! Superboy's in pain!" She shot like a bullet into the sky to search for the boy who made her heart flutter.
"M'gann wait!" Artemis called out.
Robin watched her fly away but issued a warning, "We still don't know what erased our memories! It could happen again!" His warning had fallen on deaf ears as M'gann didn't stop and kept flying in the direction of Superboy.
Fenrir gritted his teeth as he looked around at the situation. He saw that no one knew what the next step should be. He shook his head before he let out a curse, "Damnit!" He turned to the teen beside him, "I'll go after her. You guys get Kaldur somewhere safe!" He started sprinting in the direction M'gann went. In the middle of a sprint before transforming into a wolf, then landing in a full sprint. His clothing fluttered to the sand, leaving them behind.
Robin's voice called out from behind him, "Are you freaking kidding me!?" He couldn't believe he had two teammates just leave without his okay.
Miss Martian was able to easily infiltrate the site while in camouflage. None of the soldiers or scientists noticed as she entered the tent. Superboy was screaming as the electricity from the machine coursed through his body. When it stopped, she quickly gave Superboy his memories back. "Oh ho, someone's certainly a glutton for punishment," it was Psimon, with his hood up and a predatory smiled on his lips. "Psimon says…" he pulled his hood down, revealing his brain, '…forget.' Psimon invaded Miss Martian's mind to due battle.
Vaugh was confused because he could not see Miss Martian, and Psimon talked to an empty space. He looked at Psimon and questioned him, "Who are you talking to?" He got no answer. In fact, he didn't see the big-headed individual response. Vaughn waved a hand in front of Psimon's face and still garnered no response. "What happened, Big-Headed Meat?" Vaughn asked no one in particular.
Fenrir could not keep up with flying Martian, but his nose and hearing were able to track her. He eventually came upon the site that the Team was sent for. Fenrir prowled around the edges of the camp, looking for a lone patrol. Luck was on his side as he found one immediately. He pounced knocked the soldier out with a swift bash to the head.
Fenrir stripped the soldier of his shirt, pants and put them on himself after he transformed back. Fenrir quickly went to work, taking down soldier after soldier he found isolated. It was too easy a simple bash of the head or cutting off their airway with a simple hold. He just finished letting the final soldier slip out of a rear naked chokehold. He stood up, brushing some sand off before entering the tent. There was a loud bang, and something sharp tore through his back and out his front.
The gunfire alerted the scientist to the intruder. Fenrir looked down and saw the shirt begin to stain with blood. He quickly turned around to see a man in a suit point a gun at him. The man raised an eyebrow in mild surprise as he looked at the weapon, "Huh? Usually, guns kill Meat." Vaughn then quickly aimed his gun back at Fenrir, "Why not you?" Fenrir glowered at Vaugh before he shot his hands, revealing them to be claws. The rest of Fenrir shifted to his man-wolf look. Vaughn narrows his eyes in recognition, "Hm, now I understand." Vaughn ejected the magazine and reloaded the gun.
Fenrir tore the jacket off his body with a growl, "Who're you?"
Vaughn pulled the slide of his pistol and replied, "The Wolf Meat can call me, Vaughn." Seeing the fight that was about to start, the scientist in the tent made a break for it. They were paid to do research, not fight Queen Bee's battles.
Fenrir charged at Vaughn; the bullets did little to discourage him. When Fenrir was within range of Vaughn, he started swiping at the agent. Vaughn threw his pistol away and began dodging each strike with practiced ease. Vaugh ducked under one wild swipe before back-handspringing away. He landed in a low crouch and dug into his jacket that Fenrir could not see.
Fenrir leaped after Vaughn aiming a kick to the agent's head. He missed, and Vaughn brought up an uppercut with the hand that had been in his pocket. Fenrir felt his world get rocked along with a burning sensation on his jaw. Fenrir recoiled back and rubbed his chin, "I know about you, Wolf Meat." Vaughn displayed his right hand showing he had silver brass knuckles on his hand.
Fenrir let out a low growl before he charged in again. Fenrir let out a flurry of punches and kicks towards the agent. However, nothing landed as the agents easily dodged and deflected each hit. Vaughn batted aside one overreaching punch and hit Fenrir square in the face with the knuckles. Fenrir groaned in pain as the agent followed up with a quick jab with the knuckles.
Fenrir was beyond pissed; his blood demanded retribution for the attacks of silver on him. He snatched the wrist of the man before he could land a blow. With a quick tug and pull, Fenrir had Vaughn on the ground. Still, in a rage, Fenrir smashed a fist into the man's elbow. Fenrir instantly could tell something was wrong. He had gotten no reaction from the agent. No scream, no grunt, not even a whimper, nothing.
Vaughn turned around, put his knees to his chest, placed his feet near Fenrir's abdomen, and launched a kick at the teen. Fenrir flew in the air and landed on his back. Fenrir looked up to see Vaughn spring to his feet, still unaffected by the arm bent in the wrong direction. Vaughn looked at it without concern before quickly jerking it back correctly. There was no snapping of bones or cracking of joints. Vaughn did a few test twists with his arm before staring emotionlessly at Fenrir, then charged.
Fenrir was bewildered by the agent in front of him, "What the hell are you?" The only answer he got was a knuckleduster that grazed his cheek, making it burn. Fenrir snapped a kick to the side of Vaughn's knee but was not met with the usual pop or groan. It didn't even slow the man down. Vaughn smashed his left fist into Fenrir's stomach, making the teen gasp for breath before grabbing the back of Fenrir's head and beating him repeatedly in the face with the silver knuckles.
Fenrir was in a daze, his ears rung, his face burned, and his vision was blurry. His opponent was nothing he had faced before. Everything that should have worked didn't, and he was running out of options. Fenrir felt another burning blow to his face. He had had enough. With an enraged roar that gave Vaughn pause, Fenrir swiped his claws up, tearing into the agent from stomach to chin. The swipe sent Vaughn sailing back and smashing into a set of computers.
Fenrir huffed and puffed; he inhaled through his nose, then exhaled through his mouth to calm down the fire in his blood. He watched as Vaughn lay unmoving from where he crashed. Fenrir turned his back and began to walk over to Superboy and Psimon, looking to escape and go home. Fenrir felt a blow hit the back of his head before he fell to the ground. Turning over on his back, a hand was pressed on his neck, and the silver knuckles pressed into his left cheek, making his skin sizzle. Fenrir hissed in and closed his left eye but left his right one open.
Vaughn grinned like a madman pressed on the teen's face and scraped the knuckles further into Fenrir's cheek. "That was a mistake Wolf Meat," Vaughn said with a hint of amusement in his tone. Fenrir's one eye flicked to the claw mark her left on the man's chest. There was a tear in the clothing, but there was no blood. His claws had reached the skin, but instead of tears in his flesh, there were white claw marks. Fenrir felt his heart stop for a moment. He finally understood as he looked at Vaughn's face in shock. Vaughn saw Fenrir's recognition and asked with a smirk, "Finally get it now? Meat?" His grip tightened around Fenrir's throat.
"You're a…" Fenrir choked out.
Vaughn nodded his head and said, "That's right. I can't wait to give your pelt as a gift to my fa…." Vaughn stopped as things began to float in the tent. His jacket's coattails began to rise.
Across the tent and still strapped to the table, Superboy regained consciousness. His eye immediately focused on the still form of Psimon. He shook his head to get rid of the last few cobwebs in his head before looking to see Fenrir fighting a secret agent of some kind. What shocked him about it was that Fenrir was bloody and bruised, and the other guy looked unharmed besides a few bits of clothing missing. He was about to break free when he felt the ever-so-familiar touch in his mind. He scanned the room with his inferred vision. He saw Psimon's heat signature but then saw M'gann's. He understood now why he felt the tug on his mind. He looked at the struggling Fenrir but was not rush to help him. Fenrir had hurt M'gann, making him go to the bottom of his list of priorities. He started to fight against the restraints, but they would not budge.
The sphere across from him was starting to rev up in its cage. The sphere was able to break free of its prison before smashing into the table that held Superboy. By the actions of the sphere, Superboy was free from his restraints. He leaped in the air about land a heavy blow on Psimon but was topped by a black kinetic barrier. Superboy retreated back and accidentally bumped into M'gann and was drawn into her mind.
Fenrir took advantage of Vaughn's confusion and land a solid blow to Vaughn's face. The agent flew off Fenrir. Fenrir rose swiftly to his, and the agent matched his movement. The sunglasses that had been on Vaughn's face were now broken in the left eye. Vaughn's lips curled into an angry sneer before he took the sunglasses off and threw them away. "Those were my favorite pair," Vaughn said bitterly before charging at Fenrir.
Fenrir put his guard, and when Vaughn got close, he landed a jab to the man's face. The blow stunned the agent, who bit back a groan. Vaughn retaliated with the knuckles and scored a hit to Fenrir's body, making his skin tear. Fenrir blasted the side of the agent's head with a hook. Vaughn drove a knee into Fenrir's side, where the skin hadn't fully healed. Fenrir countered with a heel kick to Vaughn's chest.
Vaughn slid back, and Fenrir went to the ground as he clutched his side in pain. Fenrir was panting and wincing at the slightest movement. Vaughn had enough of the games. He huffed before he growled and stride towards the kneeling teen. "Don't worry, I'm only going to peel the skin from your bones, Meat," he antagonized Fenrir while standing over him triumphantly. "Don't take this personally, but I'm really gonna enj…" he would not get to finish his threat.
Fenrir unleashed a might gust of wind at the agent. Vaughn had futility put his arms over his face to protect himself. Vaughn took a step forward but only managed to walk in place. Fenrir didn't stop the hurricane winds that left his mouth. He pushed all the air out with as much as he could manage. Getting lifted off his feet, Vaughn let out cries of horror. Fenrir dug deep into himself and let out one last puff that sent Vaughn and the tent's canvas to be blown off into the distance.
Fenrir stopped the wind from leaving his body as he exhaled, exhausted. He dropped to his knees, and his arms went limp at his sides, his knuckles in the dirt. Movement from behind caused him to snap in that direction. M'gann had fainted, and Superboy caught her in his arms. A vortex of green wind circled around him, Psimon and the other two. The tornado of mental energy was directed at Psimon, and the blast sent him flying off in the distance.
The two lovebirds smiled at one another, and Superboy leaned in close to M'gann, who mimicked the action. A clearing of the throat brought them out their moment, making them look at Fenrir. M'gann lost her smile, and Superboy scowled at the wolf teen. However, the sound of an engine brought all three's attention to the sphere that had been caged in the tent. It skidded into a halt in front of Superboy and M'gann. It turned, so its "face" was in their direction. Its "face" was a small red circuit board, with one wire spreading across in the shape of an upside-down U and three purple lights that flashed on and off when it beeped. It sat in front of them
Superboy looked at M'gann and asked, "Can I keep it?"
Fenrir had planted his back in the sand and called to them without looking, "Looking for a pet, pretty boy?" That received a scowl from the Boy of Steel.
Miss Martian noticed the burns on Fenrir's face and neck. Her eye then wandered to the bloody side that he was cradling. "Are you okay? What happened?" she asked; the blood and burns made her imagination run wild in horror.
He waved her off, "Secret agent got lucky, and I got careless." He left no room for more prying. He was back on mission and had his memories back, time to go back into character. The duo looked at each other, not believing it for a second.
Qurac, September 5th, 02:32 EEST
The other half of the Team had managed to make it to the Bioship. They ran into the problem of a roaming patrol, but nothing they couldn't outwit. In the ship, Kaldur was lying in a cot with an IV in his arm. Artemis came to check on him while Wally was checking the systems of the ship when Miss Martian telepathically entered their minds, 'Hey everybody. I've got Superboy! He's back to normal, and we're on our way. Oh, and Fenrir too.' They could tell by her tone that she was less than happy about the last part. Miss Martian and Superboy were arm and arm as she flew them in the direction of the bioship. Down below on the ground, Fenrir raced down in the sand in his wolf form.
Aqualad, due to being hydrated and the invasion of his mind, shot up from the cot. "Who are you? And how did you get inside my head?" he said rapidly, full of concern. Artemis took charge and gently laid him back down on the cot.
M'gann playfully brushed her head, 'Hello, Megan. Aqualad's memories! I knew I forgot something.' She usually would take this seriously, but they could use some cheer after the night they had.
Back on the bioship, Wally remembered something important as well, 'Aw, man. Me, too. I didn't get a souvenir from the mission.'
Fenrir chimed in, 'I think we got that covered, Wally.' Running or rolling next to Fenrir was the sphere. It was coming with them. They couldn't leave something that advanced in the middle of the desert. The Team and their plus one regrouped and took off flying home.
Psimon and Vaughn stood in a room similar to the one Sensei stood. Blue screens with white silhouettes outlined on the screen. Vaughn spoke first, "The Green Meat got away with the Strong Meat and the metal ball." Vaughn stood tall and confident to the screens.
A female voice from one of the screens spoke, "That hardly matters. What matters is the successful test of our new partner's delivery system." Behind the duo, a screen came alive showing a convoy truck, a Humvee, and a unit of soldiers standing by. A loud thunderous boom resonated the area before the fabric of space was torn open a yellow color, and out came the sphere they had imprisoned. "More tech will come. Tech that will put the sphere and perhaps even the Superboy to shame." Vaughn had no emotional response to the woman, while Psimon gleefully smiled.
"What about the wolf boy? What happened to him?" an elderly voice called out from a screen.
Psimon cut in before Vaughn could explain the situation, "He defeated Vaughn and escaped like the others." Vaughn shot the big-brained Meat a glare before bowing his head, waiting to be lectured or disciplined.
"Did the silver work?"
Vaughn pulled out the knuckledusters still stained with blood and wickedly smiled at them, "Like a charm, father."
The voice chuckled at the results, "Good, good. Now we know we have a wolf to hunt, my soldier."
Mount Justice, September 5th, 04:36 EDT
The return to the cave was met with concern and a stern lecture. Batman, Black Canary, Zatara, and Red Tornado all showed up. They each greeted the teen before giving each of them a lecture.
Currently, the Team stood in front of Batman as M'gann finished retelling the event of her report. She recounted how they lost their memories due to Psimon hacking their mental link to how they all found each other, restored their memories, and what happened in the end, "After we dealt with Psimon, we regrouped and came home." She stood rigid, not use to having Batman's direct attention.
Batman stared for a few more seconds before looking over to the rest of the Team, "You all submit reports describing the events. Till then, get some sleep." Batman's eye landed on the dried blood that was on Fenrir's now healed wounds, "Any you want to add?"
Fenrir kept his features evens, not wanting to reveal anything that happened. "Nothing," he replied plainly, not wanting to give any indication that he was hiding something. Batman glared at Fenrir for a moment, and Fenrir copied the action.
"Dismissed" was the curt finish that came from Batman. He turned to leave, and Robin was by his side before they left through the Zeta-Tubes. Eventually, everyone left that didn't call the mountain home. The only one that was left was Zatara, who waved Fenrir over to talk to him.
Fenrir made it halfway across the room before he was blocked by Superboy. Fenrir looked at the Kryptonian with a raised eyebrow and asked, "Can I help you?" What the teen wanted from him, he didn't know. Even since his return from Philadelphia, the teen had kept away from him. Not that he didn't mind.
Superboy moved in close so only Fenrir could hear him, "I don't know why you didn't say anything about the agent, and I don't care." Fenrir went to walk around him, but Superboy put a firm hand on Fenrir's chest to stop him. Superboy got down to the barebones and issued his warning, "But get something straight, if your secret gets this Team, or M'gann hurt, I bury you myself. We clear?" The fire in Superboy's eyes gave Fenrir a clear indication that Superboy would follow through on his threat.
Fenrir admired the teen's passion, and in any other situation, he would commend the teen. However, that was not who he was to these people. He was not a friend. He had a mission to complete, by any means. Fenrir brushed the hand off him and walked by the Boy of Steel while calling out, "Whatever you say, Pretty Boy." Superboy shot a glare at the teen along with gritting his teeth before walking away.
Zatara watched the confrontation as he waited for his new ward to come over to him. When Fenrir came over, he looked around a whispered a spell, "Tel on eno esle raeh." (2) Zatara felt the spell encompass them and went right to asking Fenrir, "What happened out there?"
Fenrir sighed as he crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the wall, "I ran into a Wooden Soldier." Fenrir's severe expression told Zatara that a Wooden Soldier was nothing to make light of.
Zatara nodded his head in understanding before patting Fenrir's shoulder, "You were caught by surprise. You will be ready for it next time." The encouraging words brought Fenrir some comfort, but now with the Wooden Soldiers running around. It made his mission all the more dangerous. Zatara walked away, leaving Fenrir to watch the man's receding back. Fenrir couldn't help but think back to how Zatara being in on his secret, and all honestly, it brought him some relief knowing he had help. He went down to his room to get some sleep.
Mount Justice, August 27th, 22:02 EDT
Fenrir rushed the magician, transforming part way. He grabbed the magician by the mouth and picking him up. Fenrir slammed him against the wall, nearly cracking from the force of the impact. Fenrir looked at the shook that now donned Zatara's face. Fenrir flicked out his claws and was ready to kill this man, then make his way out of here. Zatara took notice of the claws and deducted what the young Fable was thinking. "Wa…wait!" he choked out. He didn't know what would come next, he hoped the teen would at least hear him out before gutting him.
Fenrir's training told him to kill the person in front of him and clear out of Mount Justice before anyone could suspect a thing. However, there was a nagging voice in the back of his head to listen to the man. It was like having old man Jiminy on his shoulder. He leaned in close, nearly touching noses and asking, "How do you know what I am?" He let off on his grip just enough for Zatara to get out words but not escape.
Zatara took in a greedy gulp of air while he gathered his thoughts. As the burning sensation left his lungs, he stood up and fixed his ruffled clothing. He coughed into his hand and cleared his throat. Getting annoyed with the man, Fenrir warned, "Tick. Tock." Zatara took the hint and started to talk.
"It was due to the connect of the Fable Homelands to ours that brought magic to the world," Zatara started off the conversation. Fenrir took mental notes to be able to relay the information to Fabletown. "When your world connected to ours, some of your mystics came to our world. They showed us ways to harness the primordial force of creation." Fenrir let go of Zatara, allowing the man to get comfortable and so he could light a cigarette. It was going to be a long night.
Zatara sat in the desk chair and fixed his bowtie. "So who were the Fables that came over before all of us?" Fenrir asked the man as he inhaled from the cigarette.
"Some, I assume you know. Merlin was one of the big ones. He taught many talented men and women. King Author took the man's wise words as an advisor, and Morgan Le Fey was his greatest student and failure."
Fenrir bit into his cigarette and groan as he pinched his nose. "That lousy drunk could never keep his mouth shut," Fenrir said in aggravation. His father told him it took all the best from the 13th floor to imprison that man.
Zatara chuckled as he continued with his explanation, "Yes, the man was quite loose-lipped when he had his share of brandy." The two shared a laugh before Zatara continued.
"Then there were the Telchines who went to Greece and helped imbued the old gods with their powers. Frau Totenkinder was probably the wisest bestowing certain people with magic that ran through bloodlines. Just like mine," Zatara revealed the reason he had magic.
Fenrir nearly let the cigarette fall from his lips in surprise. That was a name he was shocked to hear. Frau died but was still working in the background. He smiled fondly before saying, "Hm, she still had some tricks up her sleeves." The Telchines were eventually executed for their crimes against Fabletown when they tried to take over. His father had seen to it personally. Fenrir rested his back on the wall before sliding down to the floor. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"However, she disappeared as mysteriously as she arrived, most likely back to your world. However, she left us tomes and books to help guides us," Zatara concluded.
Fenrir pulled the cigarette from his mouth and tapped the ash off it before continued with his questioning, "Thanks for the history lesson Houdini, but that doesn't explain how you know what a Fable is."
Zatara contemplated for a moment for chuckling lightly, "Ah yes, forgive me for getting off-topic." He then closed his eyes, put his fingers on his chin as he gathered his thoughts. "I know about you and your kind in two ways: The first was from your own people," he revealed, making Fenrir do a double-take before he narrowed his eyes in anger. He didn't like being toyed with.
"Your people aren't so secretive when you cast a city-wide spell. The simplest of magicians could sense it," Zatara chastised as he explained. "Second, the stories of you people have passed down from archmages to a select few magical families who could be trusted," he said proudly as he puffed out his chest.
"What away I was a Fable?" Fenrir asked as he stood up from the floor. He had been careful to reveal little to nothing about himself and wanted to know what tipped Zatara off.
Zatara chuckled before he spoke, "The Big Bad Wolf is well known in my circle. It's easy to deduce that you were one of his." He then flourished his hand towards Fenrir, "Then you show up. All teeth, fur, and transforming into a wolf." Fenrir was about to counter how he could have been a meta-human, but Zatara cut him off, "When the Justice League tried looking into you, they found next to nothing. No one with your powers and abilities just appears from nothing. I knew then the Fables were involved." Zatara grew a proud smile as he showed how he concluded that Fenrir was indeed a Fable.
Fenrir's cigarette was down to the butt. It had been a long night, and it was almost about to conclude. However, he had one burning question to ask, "What's stopping you from revealing us to the Justice League or others to the rest of the world?" Depending on the answer he was given would determine the action Fenrir would take. He hoped it was a good one because Zatara's life hung in the balance.
"Your people are revered by my kind. If one of us reveals your people's presence to the world, that person ends up being excommunicated and dealt with by the archmage," Zatara said gravely while he stared intently at the teen.
Fenrir picked up on the fear that Zatara showed and had to ask, "Who's the archmage?"
"Someone that makes all other magicians look like a simple showman. Pray that you never meet him when he is angry," Zatara said gravely.
Fenrir cupped his chin in thought, thinking of all the new information he had just gathered. He knew if he shared this with Fabletown, he would be given orders to kill Zatara and drop off the grid. They would probably wipe the memories of everyone before starting the mission over with someone new. He didn't want to fail this mission and have it handed off to someone else; this was his legacy. A clearing of the throat got his attention as he gazed at Zatara, sitting nervously as he stuttered out, "So where do we go from here?"
Pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, he jimmied a cigarette out, put it in his mouth before taking his flip lighter out and lighting it. The smoke entered his lungs before he said, "I'm not going to kill you if that's what's got you worried." He blew out the smoke from his lungs.
Then came a suggestion Fenrir never thought would come to him, "Let me help you." Help had become foreign to him, all Fabletown agents worked solo and never relied on anyone besides themselves.
Fenrir was already breaking numerous protocols by so much as letting a Mundy know he was a Fable. Letting a Mundy help him on his assignment was the last thing he needed was to make this assignment even more complicated. "I don't think that's a good idea," he said, not liking the idea.
Zatara didn't relent as he sweetened the deal in Fenrir's favor. With a genuine smile and assuring voice, he said. "You don't have to tell me about your mission or anything personal." Fenrir was glad the man didn't want to know more about Fables. If he did, Fenrir would have to kill him. Fenrir felt the added weight of the situation come onto him that he felt sick to his stomach. Zatara's following words brought him some relief, "It helps to have a friend."
Fenrir did the only thing he could do at this point. He went back on the lessons his father had taught him. His father was a rule breaker back in his day as Sheriff of Fabletown. His father told him the story of his time in World War II, where he helped Munday American soldiers take down a crazy Nazi officer trying to build a Frankenstein Monster. 'Sometimes, you gotta bend the rules for the good of others,' his father's words echoed in his head.
With his decision made, he stuck his hand out as he said, "Okay." Zatara didn't need much convincing to agree to the deal. Fenrir now had a partner that could keep the like of Batman off his back. It felt good not to be alone anymore.
AN: I hope you all enjoyed it. Sorry for the long update. I have been working on all my other stories and writing new ideas. I hope you like the little reveal of how Zatara knew about Fables and the addition of the wooden soldier of Vaughn. Don't worry, this is not the last we will see the wooden soldiers. Have fun with the read and enjoy.
