Ranger School : Chapter 2

Wendy sat down on the left and Luana on the right, before long, the classroom filled up as the professor entered. The professor was a somewhat short, stocky man with brown hair and a buzzcut hairstyle, wearing a burgundy suit and dress pants. As the professor sat down on his chair, he got out a pen and tapped it on his desk for a few moments before stopping. The serious expression on his face definitely unnerved Kellyn, only for the man to let out a hearty laugh, startling the students.

"Is he always like this?" Kellyn asked.

"Yeah, he is. Our professor is…eccentric, but he's super nice." Luana muttered.

"Yeah, he's polite and understanding, so don't worry, he just loves to joke around." Wendy whispered.

"Alright class, you know the drill…ah, I see we got a new student! Let's see…your name's Kellyn, welcome! Okay, so here's how we do things, the first half of the lesson involves me going over the importance of Field Moves and their strength…such as Crush One, Crush Two and so on. The second half involves you guys utilizing said lessons into practice or in some cases, you guys will watch a student or myself implement them. Sounds simple, right?" The professor asked.

"It does…oh, I didn't get any sort of syllabus for this course…you know, for upcoming tests and things like that. Do you have a spare copy?" Kellyn asked as the professor smiled.

"No worries, there's actually no syllabus for this course…there aren't any quizzes or tests. I find that students needing to memorize certain things, especially for a test doesn't make a good learning environment, despite Kincaid saying otherwise. Now…since you're the new student, I'm going to do some explaining on today's obstacle needing to be cleared, then you'll go in front of the class and show them the way it's done, okay?" The professor asked.

"You got it professor!" Kellyn said as the professor went over to a door on the right-hand side and opened it.

The professor went inside of the room and with a little bit of fumbling, he came back out with a wooden box and placed it down in front of his desk before sitting down.

"Now then Kellyn…how can you see what sort of Field Move can get rid of this obstacle?" The professor asked.

"Well…the Styler is basically the tool Rangers use…so pointing the Styler in the obstacle's direction would be enough to show what's needed, right?" Kellyn asked as the professor grinned.

"No need to be so shy, you're correct! Now then…since you don't have any Pokémon with you, would you like a Friend Pokémon?" The professor asked.

"Ah…of course…I only knew that fully fledged Pokémon Rangers get Partner Pokémon and Party Pokémon. I wasn't aware of Student Rangers getting any Pokémon at all…" Kellyn said as half the class erupted into laughter.

"I don't see anything about that being funny…" Wendy mumbled as the professor tried quieting the class down.

"Quiet down everyone…you all know that only students who are enrolled have access to any sort of information pertaining to our school. It's done to prevent anyone from trying to join and then steal the Friend Pokémon, which has happened before. Anyhow, here's a Friend Pokémon to use for this class period." The professor said as he handed Kellyn a Pokéball.

Kellyn released the button on the Pokéball, and a bright, white flash of light illuminated the room. A few seconds later and the room was back to its usual warm lighting, and in front of Kellyn was a Mudkip.

"Alright, looking good Kellyn. Now that you got your Friend Pokémon, please show the class how to demonstrate the Crush Field Move!" The professor said as Kellyn stepped up to the box.

'Okay…Wendy and everyone else is watching. My partner and I gotta do our best!' Kellyn said.

Kellyn pointed his Styler towards the Pokémon, as its two moves, Rock Smash and Water Gun, showed what it could do.

'Hm, okay, so with these moves, Mudkip has access to Crush one and Soak one…considering what I just learned, I'll be able to have Mudkip break this box!' Kellyn thought.

"Alright Mudkip, use Rock Smash on that box!" Kellyn said.

Mudkip leaped into the air and slammed its sturdy body into the box, shattering it into mere splinters which the professor swept up. Because of such a great performance, the class and the professor gave Kellyn and his Pokémon a round of applause as Wendy excitedly shook her friend.

"That was great, did you see how epic Kellyn looked?!" Wendy asked as Luana continued to be shook.

"I-I really couldn't since I'm being tossed like a salad!" Luana said as Wendy ceased her shaking.

"Whoops…sorry…" Wendy said as the clapping soon died down.

"Well now, for someone who's only joined our class today, you certainly are adapting extraordinarily. Great work!" The professor said as the shy Kellyn became flustered.

"N-no problem…glad I could help." Kellyn said as he handed the Pokéball back to the professor, who recalled his Pokémon as Kellyn hurried back into his seat.

As the professor began to talk about the importance of using Field Moves, Area Moves and Map Moves, Wendy couldn't help but give Kellyn a few glances as a blush formed on her face.

'Mhmm, I'm impressed by my new friend…being able to understand the various concepts of what a Pokémon Ranger does isn't effortless. However…the way Kellyn does it so easily really makes me smile. I'll congratulate him once I get a chance…he deserves it.' Wendy thought as the class continued.

Eventually the class reached with only ten minutes left and the professor got out a projector, which he then placed on his desk before he took the lights off. Using a clicker on his desk, the professor began to play a short video detailing a pair of male and female Rangers with blue hair inside a town.

"Everyone, please observe what I'm showing you. This video shows two Rangers named Lunick and Solana from Fiore, and this is showcasing their abilities of using Area Moves, Map Moves and Field Moves during a horrific event involving a factory fire." The professor said as the students watched.

The video itself showed just as the professor stated, with the male, Lunick, using Rain Dance on the burning roof of the factory, while Solana had her Friend Pokémon, a Rhyhorn, use its Tackle to break down an iron door. Solana then ran inside to rescue a few civilians, momentarily returning with a small girl and her father. Once the victims were brought outside, Solana had a Dodrio carry them to safety as their mission was now complete, with the video ending as the lights came back on.

"Now class, we'll have an open discussion, so after watching the video itself, what did it show all of you?" The professor asked.

"It showed me that using Pokémon we capture or have in Pokéballs are extremely crucial in what we do." A male student said.

"I agree, as for me, it also let me know in greater detail about the various ways Pokémon can help us as Trainers, and as Rangers." A female student said.

"To add on to what everyone else said, I thought the video was important because it shows how Pokémon and Rangers can come through when something catastrophic occurs. With moves like Rain Dance or Fly, it's easier to rescue people or Pokémon in need, especially when every second counts or when the task seems so daunting." Luana said.

"Good observations, anyone else have anything to add?" The professor asked as no one else chimed in.

'Hm, seems like Kellyn's the type to really only speak when he's addressed. That makes sense, he really is the quiet type…though that's not a bad thing…since that's my preference.' Wendy thought as the bell soon rang.

"Oh I didn't even realize class was nearly finished. Alright everyone, see you all tomorrow!" The professor said as Kellyn, Wendy and Luana left the classroom.

"Say Kellyn, your demonstration with Mudkip was awesome…but how come you didn't mention what you thought of the video like a few other people did?" Wendy asked.

"…I just thought that Luana and everyone else explained it much better than I could. Besides, I only did that demonstration earlier because the professor asked me, otherwise I wouldn't have done it." Kellyn said.

"Seems like someone's really shy, huh Wendy? That's just your type!" Luana teased as Wendy became dark red.

"Sh-shut up Luana! G-go to your next class!" Wendy said as Luana giggled.

"Alright, alright, I'm just joking…see you guys tomorrow!" Luana said as she hurried off in another direction.

'Nice going Luana, you just had to embarrass me like that…' Wendy thought as Kellyn chuckled.

"So…um, shy guys are your type, huh? T-that's cool…" Kellyn said as Wendy's blush intensified.

"Y-you really think so?" Wendy asked as Kellyn nodded.

"I-I do…by the way, if you don't mind me asking, do you have any more classes for the day?" Kellyn asked.

"Yeah, I gotta take a training class to work on commanding Pokémon when it comes to Poké Assists. It'll only be about thirty minutes, so I'll be done by six thirty. Then I'll be heading to my dorm to relax." Wendy said.

"Poké Assist Training? Let's see…I don't have that on my schedule, I do have a half hour of grappling training though, then that's my last class." Kellyn said.

"Oh? That means we'll be right next to each other…well, our classrooms will be separate…but we won't be too far! C'mon I'll show you where to go!" Wendy said as the two made their way to the second floor, which housed the additional training facilities that Student Rangers would use.

Walking far down the hall, Wendy showed him the grappling training room, while next to it was her classroom for Poké Assists.

"Thanks Wendy…uhm, do you mind if you wait for me until class is finished? I don't really know my way around here as you can tell…" Kellyn said as Wendy chuckled.

"You don't even have to ask! Of course I'll stick around! When class is done for both of us, let me know where your dorm so that I can walk you there!" Wendy said.

"Thank you, I was lucky to get the last one but I don't really know where it's at…" Kellyn said as Wendy smiled.

"That's no problem, it's okay! Your Styler actually lets you know where your dorm's located! Principal Lamont implemented it that way since a lot of new people coming into the Ranger School won't know where everything is." Wendy said.

"That makes sense…I'll try to get an idea of how to use all the functions of this Styler. I won't keep you back any longer, I'll see you once class is over!" Kellyn said as he hurried inside the classroom.

'Hah, he's so shy…how adorable…' Wendy thought as she went into her class.

Kellyn's classroom consisted of thirty students, and five massive rock walls, which were approximately sixty feet in height. By the far-left rock wall standing by himself, was Keith. Kellyn looked almost happy to see that another student was by themselves, as he felt that he could relate to them easier, since those who tormented him when he was at school would always be in groups.

'Hm…this guy doesn't look mean or anything…he's over there by himself…it wouldn't hurt to at least say hello!' Kellyn thought as he approached Keith, which made the redhead glance over at the taller male.

'Getting a closer look at this guy…I can see that he's insanely tall…though he looks pretty wimpy, considering that he appears skinny and shy…hm, good…this'll work out nicely for me…' Keith thought as Kellyn got closer.

"Hello there…my name's Kellyn…what about you?" Kellyn asked.

'Perfect…now I got him.' Keith thought as he flashed a smile.

"Name's Keith, nice to meet you!" Keith said.

"Likewise, so what are the main lessons we have to do in this class? Is it just some additional course for testing our abilities?" Kellyn asked.

'Clueless dolt…this is a grappling class for a reason…' Keith thought.

"What we gotta do is simple, that's why this additional course only takes thirty minutes rather than the usual time…say, since you're new to this, how about you follow me when it comes to this course?" Keith asked.

"R-really? You'd do that for me? Sure, that'd be awesome!" Kellyn said as the professor entered the room.

The professor was none other than Mr. Caplan, wearing the same uniform he had on previously. Strolling up to the middle of the room with a boisterous laugh, and a few eyerolls from students, the professor grinned jubilantly at his class.

"Good evening everyone, glad you're all here today! Okay, now, let's get started with our warm-up exercises. Can anyone help out our new student, Kellyn?" Professor Caplan asked as Keith raised his arm.

"No problem professor, I'll help him out." Keith said as the professor gave a thumbs up while everyone else went to their positions.

Kellyn and Keith went to the lone rock-climbing wall where four steel ropes were hanging from the very top. Looking up at the top of the rock-climbing wall made Kellyn begin to shiver, something which Keith was indifferent to on the outside, though he was like a kid in a candy store on the inside.

"Kellyn, even though we're supposed to climb the top and then do the grappling down, you don't know the proper position, do you?" Keith asked as he and Kellyn hooked up their harnesses.

"N-no…I don't…" Kellyn said.

'So this new student isn't some perfect prodigy…well he's bothersome for me, and even though I didn't want to show him what to do, if I don't, then I'll get chewed out by the professor…' Keith thought.

"Okay, let me show you what to do." Keith said as he showed Kellyn how to get into the correct position, with the other male copying what Keith was doing.

"Like this?" Kellyn asked.

"Yeah, that's how you do it. Now, you know how to climb a rock wall, right?" Keith asked.

"…Yes, I do." Kellyn said.

"Good, then let's start!" Keith said as the two climbed up the rock wall.

Several minutes later, the duo reached the top and Keith reached after Kellyn, something that didn't sit too well with him.

'How is this guy better at me than everything?! This guy's afraid of heights, but he sure climbed that wall without any issues!' Keith thought as Kellyn sighed.

"Talk about nerve-wracking…so, how do I do the grappling part?" Kellyn asked.

"…I'll show you, just watch and learn." Keith said.

Keith then pushed off from the rock wall and quickly lowered himself down the rope to go downwards. It wasn't long before Keith was back on the ground, though Kellyn was trembling as he managed to repeat Keith's process and safely touch the floor without issue.

"Geez…you made it seem so easy Keith…nice work!" Kellyn said.

"Don't flatter me, we can go once more if you're up for it." Keith said.

'There's no way he'll be willing to go up there again. He was already shuddering the first time, I can't see him heading back up there.' Keith thought.

"Hrm…it's a bit frightening for me but…if this is something I need to do…then I'll do it without complaints!" Kellyn said as he began to climb the rock wall once more.

'This guy…Kellyn…he just doesn't quit…' Keith thought.

Keith watched with a combination of anger, jealousy and envy as Kellyn made his way to the top of the structure once more. Feeling triumphant, Kellyn began to head back down carefully as Keith continued to observe him, gritting his teeth all the while.

'People like him really annoy me…trying so hard to be someone absolutely perfect is a bore. I don't understand him at all.' Keith thought.

Some time later, Kellyn reached the bottom of the rock-climbing wall and touched the ground, breathing a sigh of relief.

"Phew…I can't believe I managed to do such a daunting task. That's something I never thought I'd do…especially at Ranger School." Kellyn said as Keith tried to not show his annoyance.

"Yeah, it's a good thing you accomplished it without any major hiccups. I take it this is your first semester?" Keith asked.

"You bet, what about yours?" Kellyn asked.

"Same for me, I like it here so far, it's not too stressful. Let's see if there's anything else Professor Caplan needs us to do." Keith said as the two headed over to the professor.

"Hi professor, Keith and I finished the rock climbing, is there anything else you'd like for us to go over?" Kellyn asked.

"Hello Kellyn and Keith…hm…no, there isn't anything else. The main reason this course is for you guys to get an idea of some perilous things Rangers might need to do and apply them yourselves. That way, when it comes for our time to take over the world, then it'll be a cinch!" The professor said.

"Oh…okay, I understand…well, thank you professor, we'll keep practicing on the days we have this class!" Kellyn said.

"Great! Oh, that reminds me, since you're new, do you know how to check your schedule?" Professor Caplan asked.

"No, I didn't get the chance to do it yet, but once I do, it won't take me long to figure it out!" Kellyn said as the professor smiled.

"Alright, sounds good. If you do need my help, then just let me know. My office is at the back of the classroom anyhow." Professor Caplan said as Keith said his goodbyes to Kellyn and hurried towards the door.

"Sorry man, I gotta run to my next class, but it was nice to meet you!" Keith said as he left the classroom along with several other students.

"A lot of people left already…this training course really went by quickly…" Kellyn said.

"Yes sir, once students complete going up and down the rock walls a few times, or even just once, then they can leave if they want to. This is basically an optional course to strengthen your Ranger skills and isn't for an actual grade…but we wish that every student enrolls in at least one of these training courses." Professor Caplan said.

Ranger School : Chapter 2

"Yeah, I understand where you're coming from professor, taking even one of these courses can definitely help a student out, since they don't have to worry about traditional classwork." Kellyn said.

"Exactly, it's nice to see someone gets it. Oh, I don't want to keep you back for too long now, it's already close to six thirty!" Professor Caplan said.

"Uh oh, I'd better meet up with Wendy…see you later professor!" Kellyn said as he left the classroom.
Meanwhile, Keith was inside his dorm, reaching there after taking a shortcut.

'Good work today Keith. You managed to convince Kellyn you were actually interested in being his friend! One thing I can't stand…is people that act all nice and sweet like that…it irks me so much. Don't worry Kellyn, I'll make you quit trying to become a Pokémon Ranger!' Keith thought.

Kellyn on the other hand was at Wendy's classroom, and waited outside for a couple of minutes, tinkering with the Styler to get an idea of where his dorm was. Even though he knew the location now, Kellyn still wanted Wendy to help him out, though his new friend didn't come out as yet.
