Chapter Seven
"And that's how we got those matching scars on our left calf." I said, finishing my story about when John and I had been ten.
"I still can't believe that you managed to keep the Doctor from telling our parents about that." John said, having given up on trying to keep me from telling Teyla stories about our childhood.
"I am surprised that the two of you survived your childhood even without the threat of the Wraith to worry about." Teyla said, sounding amazed as she shook her head.
I laughed, "Oh we haven't even gotten into the teen years which is when we both went a lot crazier but I'll leave those stories for later. Right now I had better find Doctor Weir. I promised to talk to her before the night was over." I replied, taking a bite of the apple that I had picked up from the food table.
"Make sure you keep your comm in this time. I'd rather not have to go looking for you because you got lost and weren't able to communicate with anyone." John told me causing me to roll my eyes even as I put the comm into my ear,
"Yeah yeah. Rub my horrible sense of direction into my face why don't you." I said with a smile to show I really didn't take it to heart as I turned to Teyla who had surprisingly quickly secured the place of a close friend in my heart.
"You take care and if he ever does something stupid and you want some blackmail on him you let me know. I'll hook you up." I told her, I could see the confusion on her face and knew she didn't understand what I was saying but I was feeling pretty energized and I wanted to talk to Doctor Weir so I could get started working on the ideas that had begun roaming around in my head so I gave her a quick hug and left them to search out Doctor Weir.
After finding Doctor Weir I waited for her to finish talking before walking over to her and we went for a walk so we could talk in privacy.
"So what have you learned about this place so far?" Doctor Weir asked curiously as we walked slowly down the hallways.
"Not a lot but enough to know that I should definitely begin working on a multitude of things right away. The most important one is the weapons that the Ancients took with them when they went to an unknown new world." I told her the plans for the various guns, spears and knives floating around in my head.
"Okay that sounds good I'll get a team to work with you-why are you shaking your head?" Doctor Weir asked and I quickly spoke up.
"I want to work on the weapons alone. See the Ancient that possessed me has decided to help me and I don't want to have to stop and explain things to anyone else who is with me constantly when I don't know how long she'll be around." I said, fibbing the last part because I knew she was going to be around for as long as I lived most likely however I didn't want anyone to distract me from remaking the old weapons and possibly building new hand-held weapons.
"I don't know Randy, that doesn't sound safe." Doctor Weir said, sounding unconvinced.
"Listen all I need to do is complete one of each weapon with her help and then I know how to do it and can pass that knowledge off to you and you can get it to whichever group of people you think can best handle it. However I need to be able to fully focus on that one weapon so I can complete it smoothly and having to stop and explain things or worse yet having to be watched the entire time will make it extremely hard for me to focus on my work." I told her honestly.
"I'm sorry Randy but that still doesn't sound entirely safe. How about I send two soldiers to keep watch outside of the room and set up a video feed to record your actions. I'll allow that." Doctor Weir said after a few minutes of silence while she thought about it.
"Well that would be better then having to constantly stop to explain things so yes, thank you. I promise I'll make sure to write out notes that are highly detailed on what to do, when to do it and how to do it." I told her feeling relieved that she hadn't forced the issue of having other living people in the room with me.
"Is there any way you can tell me if there's anyone else living here it would be a great peace of mind if we knew for sure we were alone here. Also is there any way you can help us find rooms for everyone? With all of the Athosians coming as well and some of the city being flooded and the security team not being able to search the entire place we're all a bit on edge." Doctor Weir said stopping me from leaving.
Thinking about what 'Yoda' had told me I realized there were still some living creatures in Atlantis but they were all locked up at the moment and finding rooms for everyone would be easy as there was enough room here in the main control tower to accommodate everyone.
"There are other living things here in Atlantis but they are all locked up at the moment so unless someone accidentally or purposefully releases them there's nothing to worry about. As for rooms there are around four hundred living compartments that can be reached in this building alone. They all can be reached by walking or by using the transporters. I can draw some map-like layouts of each floor in this building if you want." I offered after a few minutes of deep thought.
"Yes, thank you." Doctor Weir replied sounding relieved.
"No problem." I said, motioning for her to follow me as I walked to my room so I could use my sketchbook to draw the layouts I had offered to make.
Getting to my room I waved my hand in front of the sensor so the door open.
"Do all the doors for living spaces have that sensor?" Doctor Weir asked as I walked into my room, heading straight for my duffle bags.
"Yes. Also if there's someone inside of the room they can lock the door so it won't open unless they unlock it or Atlantis itself overrides the door lock." I replied as I looked through my duffle bag before just picking it up and dumping it's contents on my bed. Grabbing one of my sketchbooks and a drawing pencil I immediately began to draw the layouts of the apartment like living rooms.
Not wanting anyone to get confused when looking at the layout I made sure to write on the paper which way it was supposed to go so no one accidentally flipped it upside down. It didn't take long as it was an almost identical layout for every floor and after looking over all the papers again to make sure they were all correct I handed them over to Doctor Weir who had been silently looking around my room.
"Thank you. When are you planning on getting started on the weapons so I know when to send two soldiers over with the camera." Doctor Weir asked as she took the layouts and began to look them over.
"Well since I've already gotten to sleep I'm going to fix up my room here and then I'll have to make sure that I have everything I need before going to the...you know realistically it would be a lot easier if I was just able to go alone." I said as I thought about it, realizing that I couldn't honestly say when I would go or how long I would be there and having to constantly tell others and wait for them to finish their current duties would be annoying.
"I don't feel comfortable having you go out somewhere alone for so long especially in a place that we don't know that well and you're not a soldier or, no offence, a rocket scientist or anyone with a degree in engineering." Doctor Weir said.
"Look Doctor Weir I know you want to keep me safe but honestly I'm probably going to be the most safe one here because I have direct contact with an Ancient. I'll be fine but I need to figure out how to do as much as possible with the Ancient while she's still here. I'll probably lose track of time a lot but I'm sure you'll see glimpses of me when I come out to eat-that reminds me, I need to ask her if they had a greenhouse…"
"Randy?" Doctor Weir's voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I looked back up in surprise.
"Sorry what?" I asked, forgetting what we had been talking about.
"I get your point, just keep your comm on you and contact me directly if you need us. I'll leave you to it." Doctor Weir said.
Honestly surprised she had just agreed with me but not going to push my luck I just nodded and quickly ushered her out of my room. Waving her off before turning back into my room and then realizing I felt a mental presence.
