Chapter 4 : The start of a plan
"Hello? Who is it?" Kellyn asked.
Through the door, Kellyn heard a young woman clear her throat, and he began to wonder what anyone would be doing by his door around this time of night.
'…Hrm, it's starting to get a bit late…and that woman by the door…the only person I think it could be is Wendy or Luana…' Kellyn thought as Wendy began to sweat.
'Wendy, you fool! Why did you decide to get cold feet now?! Muster up a bit of courage to speak with Kellyn! View him as a friend first and if you truly like him, then ask him out!' Wendy thought.
"U-um…Kellyn? Hi, it's me…Wendy. I was wondering if you're free to explore the campus?" Wendy asked as Kellyn's eyebrows raised.
"Sure, I'm free, I'd definitely love to go!" Kellyn said as he put his shoes on and exited the dorm.
"Great! I can't wait to show you around!" Wendy said as she smiled.
"Thanks…but, er…what do I do about my dorm room? I don't have a key to it so I'd be worried about leaving it unlocked." Kellyn said.
"Don't worry, the dorm rooms are designed to only open when the room's owner is nearby. So for instance, if Luana tried entering my room when I'm not around then she wouldn't be able to. You're totally safe, so come on, let me give you a tour of the place!" Wendy said.
'Talk about excited! Wendy's only known me for a day, but she's totally eager to show me around on top of being super nice to me. I really respect someone like Wendy, all I ever wanted growing up…was a friend.' Kellyn thought as Wendy and him made their way to the dorm entrance and soon left the building.
Once they were outside the dorm facility, Kellyn saw how nice the area looked at nighttime, and it was a well-lit, sprawling area adorned with trees and flowers, as well as brick paths for students to walk on. Wendy slowly had a faint blush form on her face when she observed Kellyn's joyful reaction and couldn't help but smile along with him.
'He looks so happy…hm…thinking about it now…it'd be a good idea if I show Kellyn around a little bit, then that'll be helpful in case there's a day class isn't in session or if I'm sick.' Wendy thought.
"Man, what a nice campus. Usually people overlook things like this, but the entire place is well maintained." Kellyn said.
"I agree, you can really see the beauty no matter what time of the day it is! By the way…is it alright if I can continue to show you around here? You know, just so you can get a feel of the place?" Wendy asked.
"That'd be nice, sure, show me around!" Kellyn said as Wendy proceeded to show him a tour of the entire place.
Several minutes later, Wendy showed Kellyn around the entirety of the campus and marked down key spots for him, such as his dorm room, classrooms, the library and the cafeteria. Once the two were done, Wendy took him to the far end of the Ranger School, where it was just as well-lit and bustling as the other parts of campus. At this particular section however, was a lake approximately fifty feet from the Ranger School, with the campus itself being thirty feet above the lake and offering a great view. Wendy walked over to a bench and Kellyn came over, with the two sitting down as Wendy's heart started to race.
'S-so nervous…it's okay Wendy…it's okay…stay calm. Kellyn's your…new friend.' Wendy thought as Kellyn became flustered as well.
'I sat down so close to Wendy without even realizing it! She must be so embarrassed…' Kellyn thought as the two sat in silence for a brief moment until Wendy cleared her throat.
"I…um, I love to come here when the day's over…it really helps me unwind and relax. Maybe when you're finished with classes…you can hang out here with me? I-I mean if you're okay with that!" Wendy said as Kellyn blushed.
"R-really? I'd love to! Something as simple as sitting on a bench with you and watching that serene lake would help me relax my mind!" Kellyn said as it became Wendy's turn to blush.
"Good! Then on that note…let's just stay here for a little bit more." Wendy said.
The duo stayed on the bench for several more minutes without talking or anything of the sort, and instead just simply admired the lovely view. However, this served to strengthen their bond with one another; after a few seconds more of admiring their view, Wendy got up followed by Kellyn doing the same as they headed back towards the dorm building.
"That was nice…thank you Wendy." Kellyn said.
"It's my pleasure, I'm glad I could show you around, especially at that spot! Now you know why it's my favorite!" Wendy said as the two headed inside.
It wasn't long before the two Student Rangers made it to their respective dorm rooms without realizing a whole hour went by. As they turned to one another to say good night, they both had elated smiles on their faces as Kellyn tried to cover the blush creeping up on his face.
"Um…good night Wendy, I'll see you tomorrow…if that's alright with you!" Kellyn said as Wendy giggled.
"Of course it is! It'll be nice to get to spend another day with you so that I can know you better! Good night Kellyn!" Wendy said as she waved and headed inside, while Kellyn did the same.
Minutes later, both of them were in their respective dorm rooms and changed into their pajamas before plopping down on their beds. Wendy in particular was a bit giddy about the entire event that took place, as her blush continued to deepen.
'That short time I spent with Kellyn was seriously awesome! I gotta see if he really does want to do that again…oooh, this is getting me super excited! I need to relax if I want to sleep!' Wendy thought as several minutes later, she finally dozed off.
As for Kellyn, the young man was on his bed, just trying to go to sleep as he stared at the ceiling, a faint blush on his face as well.
'Wendy is awesome…I can't believe that she's stoked to be friends with me! Everyone else that I've interacted with merely brush me off or are just plain nasty to me…but Wendy and Luana were the exact opposite. I didn't talk to Keith much, but I'll try to get to know him a bit better. What I really liked was that Wendy showed me around after both of our classes were finished…I'm glad for that, since I was so nervous to even ask her! Well…I guess it's time to head to sleep…' Kellyn thought as he quickly fell asleep.
Meanwhile…in Keith's room, the bitter, jealous and mean-spirited Student Ranger was at a small table, sitting down on a chair cooking up a plan.
"Okay Linda…let me run this scheme through you. I want to know what you think of it." Keith said.
Linda, a medium height woman with short blue hair and blue eyes listened intently, wondering what sort of idea her boyfriend Keith had in mind. After a couple of seconds later, Keith concluded his thought process as Linda gave him a smile.
"I know it'll be a great plan if it's done by you sweetheart! Tell me what it is!" Linda said.
"Well, the first part of my plan is a simple one. There's a new guy at our college named Kellyn. About six feet tall, skinny with brown hair with a big spike in the back. He's basically a teacher's dream come true with his work ethic. The guy infuriates me…a lot." Keith said.
"I understand why, I totally hate showoffs like that. But…where do I come in?" Linda asked as Keith smiled.
"You'll…try to act as though you like him…think of it as love on first sight. That woman with the green hair seems to have developed a little crush on him already…but I'm thinking that we can squash it. See where I'm getting at? You flirt with him and he falls for you, then the woman will be heartbroken!" Keith said.
"That's devious…I love it. When does this plan start, and what's the second part of your plan?" Linda asked.
"So this plan of ours starts next week. It'll be strange for Kellyn to suddenly have a woman swarm him so affectionately, especially since today's his first day. If you want, you can try to continuously bump into him over the week before the plan really goes into place, you know, as if you're clumsy." Keith said as Linda pouted.
"Ridiculous, why would I do that?" Linda asked.
"Easy, because if you run into Kellyn only once and suddenly get an attraction to him, it'll be a bit strange. So…if you keep meeting up with him, then he'll have established some form of connection with you, rather than you just being a random person! Oh, and the second part of the plan involves our principal, Mr. Kincaid. He wants me, you, and a few of my friends to work alongside him and gather intel on the capturing techniques students use, as well as doing some software and hardware work, which I'll be helping him with from time to time. He'll make it so we don't need to attend class often, if at all, that way we can help him out with his research." Keith said.
"Sounds like a plan to me! Alright, let's do this!" Linda said as she and Keith grinned wickedly.
In Principal Kincaid's room, the man was laying down in his bed, thinking to himself.
'Okay Kincaid…getting Keith, his girlfriend and cronies to help you was a great idea. They think they're helping me out…but they're simply a means to an end! I've got a surprise for the Ranger School…especially that new student.' Kincaid thought as he soon fell asleep.
In the morning, Kellyn rubbed his eyes and stretched, wasting no time in getting off the bed. The Student Ranger hurried into the bathroom and quickly got ready for the day, however, Kellyn didn't want to wear the same clothes he had on yesterday, and he noticed the dresser had a large drawer that he didn't pay attention to before. Opening the drawer, Kellyn saw multiple changes of the Student Ranger uniform, so he quickly put a new one on and tossed the first pair into the washer and started the machine. Feeling refreshed, Kellyn got his Styler and headed out the door, seeing that he had an hour before class began. The young man was annoyed with himself seeing as he didn't really eat anything yesterday and figured that getting breakfast would be a good idea. With his stomach growling, Kellyn began to walk to the cafeteria, but decided to knock on Wendy's door first in the event that she didn't leave yet. After waiting for a little bit, Kellyn figured she went to the cafeteria already, only to see the door open…with Wendy standing on the other end, dressed in her usual uniform.
"Good morning Kellyn, nice to see you!" Wendy said.
"Good morning to you too Wendy, I didn't know if you left already but I thought I'd knock just in case." Kellyn said.
"Nah, I just finished getting ready, say, are you feeling hungry? The cafeteria's got a few restaurants open now if you'd like to go!" Wendy said.
"Sure, I'd love to, I didn't eat much yesterday!" Kellyn said as Wendy gave a big grin.
"You'll definitely need your appetite then, hopefully the other students didn't devour everything in sight!" Wendy said as the two headed to the cafeteria.
In a few minutes, the duo reached the cafeteria where there were twelve restaurants, with five of them being open since those were the ones serving breakfast only. After some deciding between the various places, the two decided on getting two breakfast platters consisting of three pancakes, syrup and Moomoo Milk. Once they sat down in the main dining area that could hold around two hundred people, neither one wasted any time in eating, and soon finished their breakfast as they disposed of their plastic trays and utensils.
"Phew…that was good, thanks for taking me there!" Kellyn said.
"You're welcome, it was nothing! I'm glad I could spend the morning with you!" Wendy said as Kellyn blushed.
"R-really? Well…t-that's good, I like to spend time with you." Kellyn said as it was Wendy's turn to blush.
As the two flustered friends turned a corner however, they bumped into a dainty looking woman wearing a blue blouse and dark blue hair. The woman staggered back and fell on the ground as both Wendy and Kellyn went to help her up. After receiving a helping hand from both of them, Linda did a small bow and a smile as she regained her composure.
"Thank you both for helping me, I wasn't really looking where I was going…" Linda said.
"Oh no, it was a simple accident, don't worry about it!" Kellyn said as Wendy looked at him with a small smile on her face.
'Friendly and polite…he really is my type of guy…if he won't ask me out though, once we get to know each other better then…I'll do it.' Wendy thought as a blush creeped across her face.
'Annoying woman…so this is the Wendy that Keith was telling me about…I didn't expect her to be here but I'll try again later. Hopefully Kellyn will be alone next time. What's even worse is that grin on her face as she admires this dork…I'd love to wipe off that smile.' Linda thought as she forced a smile.
"Thank you for being so nice about it, I have to be on my way now, sorry for any trouble!" Linda said as she hurried off.
"Hopefully she'll be alright from now on, but you know, considering how friendly and studious you are…how does someone awesome like yourself not have a girlfriend?" Wendy asked as Kellyn turned dark red.
"Well, most women I've met tend to not like shy guys like myself…at first it was pretty down putting for me. As for me, I'd rather not rush into a relationship with anyone, but I want to get to know them first. Even if people find someone quiet like myself to be weird, or even awkward, I try my best to not let it bother me. I don't want anyone pitying me, but just to understand me." Kellyn said as Wendy shook her head.
"…I understand, I do think that's really awful though, just because you're softspoken doesn't mean you should get looked at or treated differently. That's what I find so wrong with society. Every person is unique…and you're an amazing person…I gotta say that you're strong to not feel so torn by the way people treat you. But in case you ever do…just know that I'm here." Wendy said as Kellyn smiled.
'That's so touching…she really gets me…I'm so glad that someone understands me for who I am.' Kellyn thought.
"Thank you Wendy…I don't know what else to say…" Kellyn said.
"It's not a problem, everyone needs a confidence boost now and then!" Wendy said as the two reached their classroom and headed inside.
Even though the two of them were early, half the class was already filled up with students, with one of them being Keith. The redhead glanced over at the two entering as he had his hand on his chin, doodling away while he grit his teeth in frustration.
'After just a day the two of them are so friendly with one another…unbelievable. At least Linda got back to me late last night about how she tried talking to Kellyn only for Wendy to be right there. Hrmmm, I might have Linda strike at a time where Wendy is sick or something like that…if Linda gets Kellyn when he's alone then that'll be the best.' Keith thought as Kellyn and Wendy sat down while Mrs. April entered.
"Alright class, we're not going to waste any time in getting started. Today we'll be working on the importance of receiving calls and other data with your Stylers!" Mrs. April said as everyone removed their Stylers and placed them on their desks.
"Okay, now that we've all gotten our Stylers in front of us, let's go ahead and call each other. If you don't have your classmate's number, then just register them and call as you would with a normal phone." Mrs. April said.
'Hrmm, I don't have Kellyn's number…I wonder if I should ask him…well…it wouldn't hurt, after all, he is a really nice guy.' Wendy thought as Kellyn tapped her shoulder, making her jump.
"You look nervous Wendy, is everything alright?" Kellyn asked.
"Yes, everything's fine! Uh…I don't have you added to my Styler…so we can exchange numbers if you want…" Wendy said as Kellyn smiled.
"I'd be glad to!" Kellyn said as he and Wendy exchanged their numbers.
Once that was done, the duo went ahead and called each other, trying to hear out for the Styler to make a loud noise while everyone else's made similar tones. After the students ensured their professor that receiving and taking calls worked, Mrs. April smiled and went to the next step.
"So now that we've done that small check on your Stylers to make sure they're running properly, it's time to open them up and completely disassemble them!" Mrs. April said as everyone took apart their Stylers, effectively tearing down the small machines.
'Hrm, well, even though we need to take our Stylers apart once more, the main thing I was hoping to ask her today is for her number. That way if Wendy needs help with anything, or if she just wants to hang out, then at least we can do that.' Kellyn thought as a student raised his hand.
"Mrs. April, can you tell us the meaning of today's assignment?" The student asked.
"Certainly! Today's assignment is focusing on the primary chip for the Styler itself. Since we tested it out by getting our classmate's number checked out, I'll just go over a simple explanation." Mrs. April said.
After some time later, Kellyn and Wendy, along with the other students, had almost finished with the lesson for the day and the class was nearly over. Mrs. April was going over her paperwork while the class were utilizing their reassembled Stylers. Keith on the other hand was eyeing Kellyn, who was thrilled to have Wendy's number as the female giggled from timid male's reaction, which only made Keith angrier.
'This guy is really something else…I don't even know what to say about him. Kellyn is beyond aggravating for me, just looking at him makes me furious. The fact that he manages to befriend someone so quickly, makes me annoyed. He only joined this school yesterday and yet he's already up to speed on the curriculum.' Keith thought as the class soon filed out of the room.
Kellyn and Wendy headed to their next class while Keith headed out into the hallway and got on his Styler to call Linda once no one else was around.
