----

hail to your dark skin,
hiding the fact you're dead again.

It's been a long time since Sora has seen Riku, even though he's with him every day.

In Riku's place is some strange creature with overlong limbs and dark skin and yellow eyes and god, it's so strange how he's so Riku-like and yet absolutely nothing like Riku at all. He's got the silver hair, but it's too long now. He's still annoyingly tall, but it's just too much so now. It all looks so fucking wrong, but he is Riku.

Sora's with him every day, every day, and still, he still needs to remind himself: this is Riku.

This is Riku.

Mostly, at least. He's still an asshole and he still looks Sora up and down when he thinks no one else can see and he's still a thrillseeking prick, but Riku was never so distant, never so fucking hopeless and lost-looking.

Maybe Xehanort's Heartless was. Probably.

Sora prefers not to think about it.

When they go to the island and Riku is dark and towering above the rest of his teenage friends Sora thinks "this is Riku." When Riku watches him with his jaundiced yellow Heartless-eyes Sora tries not to feel like he's being spied on by the enemy because damn it, he's still Riku underneath and he thinks "this is Riku."

When they're alone in Sora's room with the lights off and Riku kisses him he tries to ignore the look in those unnerving lamplike eyes, the look that says "you still love me, don't you?" because Riku was never so desperate before (though maybe Xehanort's Heartless was), and because of course he does, and he thinks "this is Riku."

He hates to have to remind himself when he's fucking Riku that yes, this is Riku he's fucking, but he does, and he thinks "this is Riku."

He hates to have to reassure himself that yes, that is Riku under there, but it is, and he thinks "this is Riku."
