"Man, how Cindy taking you 'bout to be gone for so long?"
"Shitt better than I thought I'm not gon' lie."
Caesar and Riley were on their way to Target in the Caesar family car while Cindy and Royalty were driving in Cindy's car behind them. The Caesar's were going back to Jamaica for the summer so were doing a big packing. They were sending things off so in a barrel to meet them there so they had to do a large amount of shopping first.
"How?" Riley asked, genuinely curious. They were about to move to college and away from each other that he would've thought they would want to spend as much time with one another as possible.
Caesar shrugged. "We talked about it. She plans on spending a week in Jamaica with her parents during their trip."
"Damn, she's lucky." Riley crossed his arms and leaned further back into his seat. Cindy was going on a three-week family trip where they went to three different countries before she went off to college as a way of her spending time with them before she leaves and he guessed Jamaica is one of the destinations once she heard Caesar was going to be there during the summer. "You guys are really going to be gone the whole summer. That's some bull."
Caesar laughed as he pulled up to the parking lot of Target, now trying to find an empty space. "Well I'm coming back two weeks before the end of summer but I'm going to be busy trying to get last minute things for college."
This caused Riley to be confused. "Huh? I thought you was going for the whole summer?"
"Nah, me, my parents and siblings are coming back before then. Royalty is staying until school starts back for her." Caesar told him. As he pulled the key out, that's when he saw Riley's twisted face and realised his mistake. "Shit, I thought she told you."
"She did but I thought you all would be coming back together. She really leaving a nigga all this time?" He shook his head. He really thought he would be able to spend at least some time with her before they went back to school. All his closest friends like Caesar and Hiro were all moving away and going off to college, nothing was going to be the same after this vacation. No one knew this, not even Riley, but he had a strong dislike when people left him, close to hate even. It started when his parents died. The sudden change caused his life to turn upside down. All of a sudden, he was an orphan. No mother, no father. Within seconds he was left with not one parent. They both were taken from him. Ever since then, whenever someone close left him, he didn't like it. When they moved to Woodcrest he hated it. His grandfather moved him away from his support system so he acted up even more when they arrived. Riley wouldn't admit it but he was low key scared that Huey would move out when he found out Jazmine was pregnant. That was his brother. The only person to understand what he was going through. Caesar, Ming, Hiro and Cindy were going to leave him for the next 3 or so years. Now, his girlfriend was going to be away from him for the longest time since they have been together. She has gone for about two weeks max so having 10 weeks without her, he didn't know how he was going to survive.
"'ight bet." Was all Riley said before he climbed out the car with Caesar behind him just as Cindy and Royalty walked up to them from where she parked.
"You ready for some shopping?" Royalty smiled at Riley. It dropped when she saw how sour his face looked and didn't like that look. "What's wrong with you?" He never replied so she turned to her cousin. "Caesar did you break my boyfriend? What did you do?"
Caesar flipped his middle finger at her but other than that, he ignored her and continued walking inside with Cindy holding his hand.
"You giving me the silent treatment? Is this what we doing? I haven't even done shit to you Reezy." She gave him a side eye, expecting him to say something but he didn't. She shook her head and went to walk ahead but was pulled back by Riley.
"I'm sorry Angel, it's not because of you, it was something Huey bitch ass said to me that got me annoyed." Riley lied to her.
She lightly frowned before wrapping her arms around him. "You sure? You don't usually get this upset over your sibling shit."
"Yeah I'm cool, let's go." He went over and grabbed a shopping cart for her to take. Caesar and Cindy already went off with a list of stuff he needed to get so they would just meet up at the end.
They spent 20 minutes having casual conversations with one another as Royalty went through the list of things she needs to buy. Riley just walked by her side and engaged every now and then but other than that stayed quiet which she noticed but let slide.
It wasn't until another 10 minutes went by when Royalty stopped in her steps, causing Riley to walk right into her.
"What is wrong with you?" She asked him again, this time clearly annoyed.
"What?" He replied with.
She rolled her eyes. "Don't what me nigga, what is wrong with you?"
"Ain't not-"
"You better not say nothing because it's something. Since you got out the car with Caesar, you have been sulking like one fucking baby. What he say to you Reezy?"
Riley sighed. There was no point on him being silent mad all this time, he might as well tell her since he was going to bring it up eventually. "When was you going to tell me that Caesar was coming back early and you not?"
She raised an eyebrow at him. "I told you I am now staying the whole summer back home."
"But not that your fam is coming back early. Why you not coming back early with them? I gotta wait until school starts to see you? What if your parents decide to just keep you out there and you can never come back?"
Royalty could see how upset Riley was over the situation but to her, it wasn't a situation to be upset over. She would be gone for a few weeks, it's not like she was gone forever or breaking up with him.
"Reezy, the last time I saw my family, I was recovering from being in a coma from a crazy ass accident, remember that?" She asked rhetorically. "My bad for wanting to spend more time with them. Especially my new baby brother. You know how hard it is for me to not see my parents, or even my siblings?"
Royalty didn't realise what she said but Riley did. His face dropped even more and you could see how vexed he was now. "You know what, yeah, I can relate to not being able to see my parents. Been that way for the past 10 fucking years. At least you can see and talk to yours."
She sighed and reached for his hand but he flinched away. 'Ouch... but I deserved that.'
"I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that it's just... I want to spend time with them. I need some time back home for a few weeks but then I will be back, I will be the same Angel that has always been here." She smiled at him.
"You just can't come back any earlier? I am missing your 16th, we had plans."
The smile dropped. It seemed as if he wasn't really understanding what she was saying. "You know what, this isn't the time, nor the place." She turned and went to push the cart again but Riley pulled on her arm to stop her.
"There ain't no other time to talk about this, you're leaving me."
Royalty slightly glared at her boyfriend who wasn't really acting like one right about now. "I'm leaving the country, not you and I would really appreciate it if you removed your hand from my arm so I can continue to collect what I need for my long ass trip you so badly don't want me to go on."
As much as he didn't want to, Riley let go of her arm and he watched her stomp away from him, clearly frustrated. He stood there wondering what he should do now so he decided to find out where Caesar and Cindy were. Once he did, he walked over to where they were waiting for him.
"What did you do to my poor baby cousin?" Was the first thing Caesar asked once Riley caught up to them.
"Nothing! Why you assuming that I did something?"
Cindy crossed her arms. "One, you're with us and not her. Two, she messaged me say you're being annoying but the thing is, she called you Riley, not Reezy. When we talk, we call you Reezy."
He began to rub the back of his neck nervously. 'Damn, did I fuck up? She hasn't called me Riley in months.'
He was slightly panicking on the inside but kept his cool and tried to brush it off. "Might be auto correct or something. You know she didn't mean it."
Caesar sighed and placed a hand on Riley's shoulder. "Look, you know I love you like a brother but that's my cousin, she comes first so if you fucked with her, imma have to fuck you up and I really don't wanna do that." He warned.
"Trust me, we good."
"If you say so... I'm still going to talk to her."
"Fine by me." Riley said casually but to be honest, he knew at this very moment, they were not good.
Riley spent the remainder of the shopping trip with Cindy and Caesar and didn't see Royalty until it was time to check out. Riley thought about helping her out but Cindy took over instead while he just helped out Caesar. The way Royalty was ignoring him was crazy so he did his best to ignore her too. It was hard but it had to be done. This was not the place for them to talk so he was going to wait until they got back to her house, then they could continue their conversation, a much needed conversation.
"Ay Reezy, why don't you ride back with me?" Cindy offered as they walked out the store. He looked over at Caesar who shrugged.
"Sure."
The two groups split up and loaded up the car. Riley jumped in the passenger seat while Cindy got in the drivers seat and drove off. It only took a minute of silence before Cindy started speaking since the Caesar's didn't live far from the store, she wanted to get her part of the conversation out the way.
"So what's up with you and Royalty? This is the first time I have ever seen either of you give the silent treatment to each other so don't try and say it's nothing. It is very obvious something is going on." Cindy started off. She did not need Riley running around the question, he just needed to be up front about it.
He sighed in annoyance as he thought back to his disagreement with Royalty. "Look, it's not all that bad. I just got annoyed that she was spending the whole summer out there and not coming back until school starts back. The rest of her fam is coming back before then, why can't she? Then she said that I don't know what it's like to not see my parents for a long time but I know she slipped up on that shit... there is actually times I forget that I'm supposed to have parents." Riley started to confess out of nowhere. Cindy has always been one of the closest person to Riley. Their love for basketball and hustling where amongst the few things they had in common. They became brother and sister over time, always looking out for each other. It was mostly her looking out for him but that didn't matter. Riley was her little brother and Royalty was her little sister slash cousin because of Caesar. Either way, they were the youngings she looked out for. "Like, people real life got a mom and a dad. You got both. I damn near forget sometimes and you rich so there's that too. I know I shouldn't be mad that Royalty wanna see her parents, I would want to see mine too... damn, it really isn't that complicated is it?"
"I think you have somewhat a reasonable reaction to not want Royalty to go. I mean, she is your girlfriend. You've been together for over a year which is surprising to anyone that knows you." Riley wanted to protest to that but knew it was true. An 8-year-old Riley would be thinking that 16-year-old Riley didn't settle for no girl and he would have hoes hanging off him like jewellery but that all changed once that Jamaican native stepped into his class. "You haven't left each other alone for this long so I get you're nervous. I'm nervous as fuck that I am not going to see Caesar for months on end. I have to do the whole long distance relationship shit and that's scary. I'm scared he's going to find his ideal girl and forget about me but this isn't about me. This is about you and Royalty." She sighed and focused on what she wanted to say. "She's going to come back to you, don't worry about that. You will be able to get through this. It's nothing too big. When we get back to the house, just talk it over with her and clear the air. You don't need that shit hanging over y'all heads when she gets on that plane because you're going to regret it." She advised as best she could.
Riley nodded as he was actively listening to what she had to say. He was definitely going to take what she said into consideration because it was easier said than done. One thing could be said now but once he got to the house and sat down with her, something else would get said.
They spent the rest of the journey in silence since they were coming up to the Caesar's. They got out and unpacked the cars, Royalty and Riley still avoiding each other which was when Caesar decided to step in.
"I hate awkwardness. You two, go and talk. Me and Cin are fine here." He shooed them away.
Royalty gave him a look to say that she didn't want to go but she did not feel like picking a fight with her cousin now. "Fine... we'll go to my room." She walked ahead as Riley followed behind with his head down.
"You think they're gonna be alright?" Cindy asked as she watched the two walk upstairs.
Caesar sighed. "I hope so. They're good for each other. I talked to her on the way here so hopefully that helped."
"I talked to Riley so I hope it works too." She leaned into him so he wrapped his arms around her to hold her closer.
He kissed her and looked at his phone. "Gonna be a while until my people come. We can do a little sum sum while we wait." He smirked. Cindy laughed but showed she agreed by pulling him in for a deeper kiss, forgetting about the couple upstairs sitting in silence.
Riley was sitting on Royalty's bed as he stared at the other side of the room which she shared with her younger cousin, Melissa but the room did have a lot of space for the two. Caesar was the only one that had his own room as his youngest siblings, Moses and Micaela shared a room. Neither of them knew what to say first so they chose to not say anything... until he was tired of the silence.
"We finna talk about this?"
"What we gotta talk about?"
The two slowly turned to each other and they could see each other's eyes soften once they caught eye contact.
"Look. Imma just start off saying that I am upset that you're leaving because of how long you're going for and the short notice I got that you're leaving. You're turning 16 and I am missing it. We were supposed to go all out for your 16th but now we can't."
Royalty sighed and placed a hand on Riley's thigh. "Reezy listen." She used his nickname which showed they were getting back on the right track. "I understand that all of this is sudden but this isn't permanent. Its only for the summer, trust me when I say I will make up for this when I get back."
"But that's months away." He reminded her.
"I know but I will make sure I make it up to you. I promise." She repeated with a smile. "I am going to bring you back so much stuff and the first weekend I am back, we will go out to eat and celebrate my birthday, okay?" She tried to compromise. "Plus, we can facetime. I got Wi-Fi out there you know."
Riley smirked as she nudged him. "Fine but that just means you won't get your presents until you come back."
"Damn, I forgot about that." She pouted playfully.
"Too bad. You gotta wait."
"You can't ship that shit over?"
She giggled at the look of disappointment he was giving her. "Hell nah... now gimme a kiss Angel."
With a large smile on her face, she leaned forward and gave him two pecks on the lips but broke apart once she heard footsteps coming towards her door. "Looks like the fam is home."
Just as she said that, the door swung open and in walked the youngest three of the household.
"Riley!"
Riley smirked and caught the little boy in his arms who ran towards him. "Sup Moses. I hear you can say the 'r' in my name now."
"Which I am glad. Hearing 'oyalty was getting outta hand."
"Hey Riley." Melissa smiled at her cousin's boyfriend as she handed her little sister Micaela over to Royalty so she could give him a hug.
"Sup Mel and Mica. You guys ready for your holiday?" He asked.
"Yes! I got everything packed already and I am so excited. I can't wait to go to the beaches and take pictures."
Royalty rolled her eyes. "You know better than to act like no damn tourist."
"Ay let the girl get her selfie game up." Riley defeated the early teen.
"See Riley gets it. I knew I liked him more than just being a pretty face." The 13-year-old winked at him and he sent her a playful wink back.
Royalty looked between the two. "Wow, you just gonna steal my boyfriend?"
"Nah that would be too easy."
"Remember whose hands are going to be in your hair tomorrow." Royalty smirked as she got the upper hand in the situation.
"Wait, my hair." Riley just remembered. "Angel you gotta do my hair tonight. It's gonna be the last time you do it in a long time because I will have to go to Jazmine while you're gone and you know she's busy with the Malcom."
She sighed and knew she should at least give him this before she left. "Fine, start taking out your hair." He grinned and immediately started to take out his hair. "Take these babies to their parents." She asked her cousin who did just that. "Reezy sit on the floor so I can help you take these out."
He did what she said and the two started to take Riley's hair out while listening to music which she put on just before helping him. They were both trying to appreciate the time they had together before she went away and this was a way he knew they could share. Getting her to do his hair was one of the ways the two liked to do together. It was fun and relaxing and just being in each other's presence was something they enjoyed. Riley was definitely going to miss these moments over the next few months and she did too.
"Ahhhhh!"
"Ugh, why are you crying Malcom?!"
Jazmine was bouncing the newborn in her arms as she walked around the room trying to calm the crying baby down. Huey had finally decided to do his work out since he had missed out on the past three days because he was helping with Malcom so it was just Jazmine and Malcom. Jazmine thought she had it but the boy wouldn't stop crying once he finished his feed. She changed his diaper so that wasn't the problem. He should be fine now. She didn't know what she was doing wrong. She felt like a terrible mother and that thought made her cry but only hers was silent.
"Please... stop crying please." She begged as she tried to calm him down. He just looked red, as he did every time he cried. "What's wrong?" She placed him over her shoulder and rubbed his back just as Huey walked back into the room.
"Everything alright?" He asked and he instantly regretted the question from the look Jazmine gave him.
"Really?! Am I alright?!"
"Sorry." He apologised as he walked behind Jazmine to look at Malcom. As he stepped closer, he stopped crying.
"Huh?" Jazmine asked confused. "Why is it that he just sees you and stops crying? That's no-" She stopped half way through her sentence when she smelt something. She looked at Huey who held his arms up in defence.
"I know I'm sweating but that is definitely him."
Jazmine pulled the baby back and saw his face going back to its normal colour and it looked as if Malcom was satisfied with what he just did. "Really? I just changed you."
"He just needed to shit." Hue shrugged as he picked up his towel so he could freshen up after his much needed, intense, work out.
"But the way he was screaming you would've thought it was something else." Jazmine sighed as she placed her son onto the bed as she collected the things she needed to change him. "You not going to do it?"
He shook his head. "You seem to have it handled."
"I really don't. He prefers you. I'm just used for my milk supply."
"Jazmine you know that's not true. The first person he wants when he wakes up is you."
She rolled her eyes. "As I said, for milk."
"I mean in the beginning yeah but after that he stays quiet when he's in your arms for a very long time. He's hella comfy there." He leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. "I'll be back." With that, he walked out the room with the towel over his shoulder.
Jazmine took a deep breath at the fussy baby waiting for his diaper to be changed. "Ite, let's do this." She began to change him, doing her best to ignore the smell and getting the mess onto her hands. Malcom just sat there looking up at his mother. "Looks like your umbilical cord is about ready to fall off." She spoke more to herself as she changed her son. It wasn't very pleasing to look at but it was something she had to clean regularly and she was happy to see that it was hanging off, meaning it should fall off in the next day or two.
Once the baby was changed, she got out his baby bouncer and put him inside so he could spend some time relaxing in there. It was honestly the best thing they got because they could carry it anywhere in the house and just have him sit and watch them do what they needed to do. If she was cooking, she would bring it into the kitchen and let him entertain himself while she cooked. It was much easier, and safer, than carrying him in her arms the whole time.
"I can't believe it's only been a week." She whispered to herself as she relaxed into the bed and pulled out her phone. She opened up Snapchat and began to watch her now old classmates' stories. So many of them were talking about their summer and college. The vacations they were going to go on, the concerts they were going to see and preparing for their new lives in college. About 43% of her class was moving out of state so they were bragging about how fun it was going to be. That was supposed to be her. Ming and Cindy were going to go Florida, Hiro and Caesar were going to go Atlanta while Jazmine and Huey were going to go Chicago. That was the plan. Until she found out she was pregnant, now those plans were thrown out the window. They had to make new plans based on their current situation. She couldn't blame Malcom, he was innocent in all of this. She just wished he didn't come so early in her life.
Jazmine felt terrible admitting it to herself so tears started to fall down her cheeks. How could a mother think like that? She felt like no mother, just a horny teen that got too carried away. Malcom deserved a better mother than her, Huey deserved a better girlfriend than her. The way the two instantly bonded was beautiful to see but she was struggling to be the mother he deserved. He deserved so much better than her. Everyone deserved someone better than her.
Her thoughts were cut off when the door opened and Huey walked in with the towel around his waist. She quickly wiped away the tears before he could see and turned to face him. "You enjoy your shower?" She asked him.
"Yeah I guess." He answered. He quickly threw on some boxers and shorts before flopping in the bed next to Jazmine. "Where's Malcom?"
She pointed to the floor and he peered over to the baby silently sitting in his bouncer. They laid on their backs and stared up at the ceiling.
"His umbilical cord is about to fall off."
"Yeah, I saw earlier."
After that, they just laid in silence for about five minutes. It was weird for Huey because Jazmine wasn't laying on him, she just laid next to him, not touching him. She still wasn't comfortable enough to touch him. It had been a whole week since he has properly kissed her, the kiss on the forehead was surprising so it made him think they were making progress but now, it showed they hadn't really but he knew he would give her time. He would give her as much time as she needed so for once, he started talking.
"I've been thinking of my parents." He started off.
This made Jazmine ears perk up once he started talking. This was a topic that if it was brought up, you had to listen because it wasn't a regular thought. He was talking about the same parents he watched get shot at the age 8. He saw the lifeless eyes of his mother as the blood leaked from the fresh bullet wound in the middle of her forehead while Riley screamed for her to wake up. He heard his father tell him that he loved his sons and lied saying everything was going to be ok as he bled out from the hole in his stomach. Nothing was fine after that for a very long time. He was broken, lost, angry. All the different stages of grief hit the young boy at once. He had to physically get dragged away from Chrisitan and Mackenzie Freeman's dead bodies but even when he was pulled away, he was still covered in their blood. Head to toe.
A shiver ran Jazmine's spine just thinking about what she was told about that day, she couldn't imagine how Huey and Riley felt actually experiencing it. That pain is like no other. Losing your parents were one thing, watching them die was another.
"What about them?" She asked, trying to get him to speak about the parents he didn't like bringing up but as time went on, he seemed more comfortable letting her in. He pushed her own problems to the side for a few seconds to be the best friend and girlfriend Huey needed.
Huey moved one of his arms so it rested behind his head, not taking his eyes off the spot on the ceiling his eyes were trained on since he laid down.
"It's still weird that they're gone... it been 10 years but it's weird." He started off, not sure where he was going with this. "I have a son and they're never going to meet him, when I have more children they are never going to meet them. When Riley has kids, they're never going to meet them. That shit is not fucking fair!" When he raised his voice, Jazmine and even Malcom flinched from the sudden volume change which Huey noticed. "Sorry." He apologised, clearly embarrassed by his outburst.
"No no. It's fine, continue." Without realising, Jazmine placed her hand on top of him as extra comfort and Huey was too into his thoughts to think about it.
"Why did it have to my parents? Why them? They didn't deserve to die. Malcom should be able to have two sets of grandparents that love him and want to watch him grow. Grandad is just getting older, I don't know how long he has left and that shit scares me." He disclosed like never before. Jazmine wondered what got over him to be thinking so much about his family. "Then you have my useless grandparents." He rolled his eyes at just the thought of them.
This is where Jazmine was feeling nosy. "Whatever happened to them?"
Huey shrugged. "Well, let's just say they are very different from the Freemans. Aiden and Simone Johnson are what you consider wealthy. Rich is for rappers and basketball players, they, they're wealthy. My mother was never like them. They were your typically spoilt and stuck-up people but she was loving and caring. She fell for my father who was way below her class but she didn't care. Although her parents did. They hated her for that, they saw it as an embarrassment to the Johnson name, especially once she dropped it once she got married. They even hated themselves for letting her go to a public school for a year so she could 'connect to the urban people' or so I heard them put it. Met at 15 at a party, a fight broke out, he saved her and walked her home and from there it was history. I remember them saying my father wasn't a real man because my mother earned more than him but my mom shut them down, she really loved him. Said he was her soul mate. From there, the relationship was never the same. They always involved their other children in things and not my mother. She was the 2nd oldest of four." Huey went to quickly summarise. "Aiden Junior, my mother, Anastasia and Matthew. Last I heard, Matthew was the only one without kids yet but that was a long time ago."
"Wow, I didn't know you had an aunt and uncles." Jazmine said, completely engaged now. Malcom had fallen asleep in the bouncer so they had at least 2 hours before he woke up again and cried the house down.
"Because they're not." Huey rolled his eyes. "Never acted like one. You could tell they never really liked us. My parents always told Riley and I how important family was so they tried to be civil with the Johnsons to have us grow up with until we decided we didn't really want to see them but we were too young to think about that yet. We were treated like outcasts. They never showed their fancy lifestyle around us but we knew about it but we didn't care at that age, honestly, I forgot about it. I just knew the money my parents had helped pay for this house. As I was saying, they were embarrassed of us. We grew up in Chicago, they lived on the outskirts. We played rough, they didn't get their hands dirty with dust, they had maids for that. It was two worlds and I preferred the ones I had with the ones I shared my last name."
"So what happened once your parents died?" She asked. She didn't want to say kill because that was too sad to say. She turned to face him so he turned to face her, the closest they have been in a long time.
"It was the perfect time for them to leave us alone. The lack of support was to be expected. They couldn't wait to distance themselves from the Freeman's. I even wonder if they ever mentioned my mother or us before but I could give a fuck to be fair. They don't deserve my energy."
"Do you think you will ever talk to them? Tell them about Malcom."
Huey thought about it for a few seconds. "I don't want to. They don't deserve to know. I want my son to be around a family that love him and that's the Freeman and Dubois'."
Jazmine slightly smiled at that and from the look on his face, he was done talking about the topic but she hoped this wasn't the last time he opened up about his past. He knew so much about hers but his was still too heavy for him to say out loud but she was getting there.
"And this Dubois loves you."
"Trust me when I say I know... I love you too."
The two eyes stayed locked, for the first time, not knowing what to do first. Huey didn't know if she was ready for more than a slight touch but from how she was moving closer to him, she was.
He met her half way and now locked their lips together. It was slow, trying to saviour the kiss they had been missing for the past few days. It was as amazing as they remembered.
Jazmine really wanted to take it further but she wasn't ready yet. Her body just didn't want it yet. She pulled away from Huey and looked up at the maroon she fell in love with. "I- I-" She had no idea how or what to say as she looked at him helplessly.
"Don't worry about it." Was all he told her, understanding what she was trying to say.
She slightly nodded as he laid further away from her, giving her space. "Thank you." She whispered. "Wanna nap while he's napping?" Was all she could think about saying.
He nodded at her and the two dived into the covers. She snuggled into his strong arms when he tested out if he could touch her and he was glad at the results. Maybe more of the old Jazmine was coming back out. That didn't even matter right now, he was just happy that he got to hold her in his arms again so he was going to savour the hour or so he had holding her until Malcom gave them a loud awaken for his routine feed and attention.
Sorry if this is feeling a bit slow but I don't want to give too much away so early on in the story so just bare with me for now.
Thank you Chel29 & GREENPEACE1990 for the constant support, I hope you enjoy the new journey this story is going on.
