"I highly approve of the wife beater and jeans look, Sir Ambrose." CJ purred into the phone as she spoke to Dean, her twitter feed on her laptop screen while she sat next to Adam on the couch. Adam rolled his eyes at her tone, not ready to hear his daughter use such a tone with a man even though she was almost thirty and pregnant with said man's child. "Your fan base is also quite happy about it."
"Did the Ambooty look good?"
"The Ambooty looked great." CJ said with a smile, shooting a guilty look at Adam when he sighed exasperatedly. "Sorry."
"It's fine."
"Are you sitting by Adam?" Dean asked, and she could hear him chuckle.
"Yeah. I think we grossed him out."
"You did." Adam confirmed her suspicions before getting up and heading into the kitchen.
"We definitely grossed him out."
"Did you tell him about moving to Vegas?" Dean asked and CJ sighed. "Sweetheart, you've been there for four days. I'm sure he's asked."
"I don't want him to get mad at me."
"You're twenty eight and capable-"
"I'm not having this discussion with you over the phone, Dean." CJ cut him off, not wanting to have this discussion with him at all. She was honestly nervous about having Dean and Adam under the same roof again. She didn't want to drop the "I'm moving to Vegas" bomb until she knew that Dean and Adam would be civil under the same roof.
"But you will tell him?"
"I will."
"My flight comes in at midnight."
"I'll be there to get you."
"Honeybee, I-"
"You can make the drive back." CJ assured, smiling at the care he showed her.
"Promise."
"I promise."
"I gotta go. I'll call when I land, alright?"
"Alright. Be safe out there, Ambrose."
"Ditto, Copeland." He said before hanging up and CJ set her phone down beside her on the couch as Adam sat back down.
"You two are sleeping in different rooms." He stated and she sighed, but nodded her understanding. "How serious are you two about being together?"
"He knows my name." Adam only nodded, gently patting her shoulder. He didn't really know what to say about that, since she obviously trusted Dean to the point where he knew her real name. The fact that she trusted him to that extent even after what had happened between them showed Adam that she truly loved Dean. But the question now was whether or not Dean had atoned for his sins.
"So you don't want me to yell at Seth?"
"I've already taken care of that." CJ spoke with a nod, smiling when Adam pulled her into his side. "Please don't yell at Dean anymore. He still feels like shit about what he did."
"Is he mad at me for saying what I said? I stooped really low."
"He's actually glad that you said that stuff. He said it made him realize things- I wish I could remember what he said."
"Oh, good." He mumbled, kissing her head as she yawned. "Get some sleep."
"You'll wake me up in time to-"
"Definitely. Just go lay down, okay?"
"Okay. Eleven fifteen, okay?"
"You got it, kiddo." Adam spoke with a smile as he watched her disappear up the stairs. He wasn't going to wake her up, he was going to pick up Dean himself so they could talk things out without CJ between them. As far as Adam was concerned, he needed to make sure that everything out in the open between them and the only way to do so was be alone in an enclosed space with Dean.
So as the hours ticked by, Adam made a list of things to talk to Dean about on the drive. He was more than prepared to take the long way home to make sure all bases were covered before he let Dean near CJ.
"You know she's going to be upset with you when she wakes up and you're gone, right?" Beth asked as he put on his coat and he shrugged, noticing the disappointed look on her face.
"It's not like I'm gonna make her dump him. I just need to clear the air and she'll get in the way of that." Adam defended himself before kissing her cheek. "She'll be out for the night anyway. She looked exhausted earlier."
"Whatever. Just drive safe."
"I always do. Can we have bacon with breakfast tomorrow?"
"Apologize to Dean about the father comment and I'll think about it." Beth demanded, crossing her arms over her chest when Adam sighed dramatically. "That crossed so many lines, Adam Joseph, and you know it."
"Alright, alright. I'll apologize. For sausage and bacon."
"Nonnegotiable. Now get out of here. I wouldn't want you to be late for your interrogation."
"I'll ignore your tone because I love you. I'll be back in about an hour."
"I love you, too." Beth sighed, watching Adam walk out the door. She could understand his need to protect CJ and defend her when necessary, and Dean definitely deserved a verbal ass-kicking, but she disagreed with how Adam went about it. The next couple days would be interesting, to say the very least.
Dean was surprised to see Adam in the airport, but cautiously walked up to the older man with his bags. Adam glared him down the whole time and, as uncomfortable as it made him, he reminded himself that he deserved this. If his daughter had her heart viciously ripped out by some douche and took him back, he'd be giving him the hardass treatment.
"Adam."
"Dean. How was your flight?" Adam asked, leading Dean out if the terminal and to his jeep.
"It was a flight. Nothing too terrible." Dean stated casually, putting his bags in the open trunk. "Where's CJ?"
"Home sleeping. She wanted to take a nap before picking you up, but I thought she needed her sleep so I didn't wake her up." Adam explained before shutting the trunk and looking at Dean. "I wanted to talk to you in private, anyways."
"Alright then, first things first." Dean stated before taking a deep breath and tapping his cheek with two fingers. "Lay it on me."
"What?"
"You probably want to knock my lights out, and I know I deserve it for what I did. Let's get this over with."
"CJ is going to kill me if I do."
"We can tell her I hit you first. Just punch me in the face so we can get this over with."
Adam was surprised to see Dean practically begging to get punched in the face and, for a split second, he considered it. As soon as he saw the older man's fist clench, Dean shut his eyes and mentally prepared himself for the pain that was to come. But when all he got was a pat on the shoulder, he slowly opened his eyes to look at Adam.
"As much as I'd love to, I can't. I appreciate the offer though."
"Why can't you?"
"Because I already crossed a major line with that comment about your father and and hers, and Beth is making me apologize. You coming home with a busted face is going to land me in the dog house with two of the four major ladies in my life, and I'm not interested." Adam explained as he and Dean got into the jeep and the younger blonde nodded his understanding. "But, despite you stepping up and being a man, you two are sleeping in different beds."
"I can handle that."
"My mom flies in tomorrow morning, Beth and I are surprising her with it."
"Okay."
"No bullshit and we're going to act like everything is fucking fine between us."
"Gotcha. I need you to know, Adam, that I'm not pissed off with you for saying everything that you said. You were protecting Christina, and I respect that. I deserved every fucking word, so I've got no reason to be upset with you." Dean stated, looking over at Adam when the jeep stopped at a red light. The older man met his gaze, blue eyes revealing something Dean had never seen before.
"Good to see that you grew the fuck up. Does she let you call her Christina, or do you only do it when she can't hear you?"
"I call her Christina when it's just us, or when we're having a serious conversation."
"The fact that you know her name means that she trusts you. Talking about her childhood is one thing that requires trust, but knowing her name is a huge deal to us."
"She made me and Roman swear to secrecy."
"When did she tell you?"
"The day after we took her home from the hospital after her panic attack." Dean spoke softly, fist clenching on his thigh at the memory of how broken she looked on that night. It was all Seth's fault.
"You okay?" Adam asked at the light turned green, noticing Dean's fist clench and the tick of his jaw.
"Thinking about that night just pisses me off, y'know? And not just because I got hit twelve times with a steel chair. She didn't deserve the emotional turmoil Seth put her through that night and it took everything in me to not beat his ass for it while he was an easy target."
Adam could only nod, feeling Dean's anger. It was that obvious to him that the young blonde cared deeply for his daughter. He was also grateful that he wasn't there that night, otherwise he'd be suspect number one in the mysterious disappearance of Seth Rollins.
"Why didn't you?"
"She made me promise to keep my issues with him in the arenas so we wouldn't stress her out by arguing in front of her." Dean explained, shrugging. "It's been hard, but there's no such thing as impossible."
"Ain't no mountain high enough." Adam sang, completely sidetracked from his intended serious chat with Dean.
"Ain't no valley low enough." Dean added, in the same awful attempt at soprano that Adam attempted.
"Ain't no river wide enough,
To keep me from getting to you." The two blondes sang together before bursting into laughter.
"You're actually not that bad." Adam complimented when he finally stopped laughing and Dean nodded his appreciation.
"Thank you. Not that I didn't love our random singalong, but I thought you had something major to talk to me about?"
"I'm going to make it simple: I like you, Dean. You're good for CJ, and you make her happy." Adam started, looking over at Dean as he turned into the neighborhood. "You pull some shit like you did last month and I swear to god I'll cut off your junk and feed it to the dogs and make you watch."
The mental image was enough for Dean to instinctively close his legs a bit to protect himself. But he nodded none the less as Adam parked and the two blondes make eye contact.
"You're still not sharing a bed with her. I'm sure you two fuck like rabbits when you're together and I'm not trying to hear it."
"What if I promised no sex?"
"Can you tell her no?"
"If I throw in fear of my genitals, she won't push it."
"Alright. Go for it. If I ever walk in on you guys doing anything other than cuddling you go straight across the hall, Ambrose." Adam warned, pointing at Dean. The blonde only nodded, small smile on his face before getting out of the car and grabbing his bags. Dean wasn't expecting Beth to be up this late and he certainly wasn't expecting her to hug him once she saw him, but both were the case and he had to let go of his bags so that he could wrap his arms around the older woman.
"Hey, Beth." Dean said with a small smile, feeling her cup his cheeks once she stepped back.
"How was your flight?"
"Not too shabby. How have things been here?"
"The usual; taking care of the baby, dogs, and Adam. No big deal. Has everything healed nicely from a couple weeks ago?" She asked, stepping around him, taking his jacket off, and lifting the back off his shirt to look at his back. Although she was invading his personal space, Dean just let it happen because he knew she was doing it because she cared for him. He felt her prod his back and winced, but held in his pain silently. "Does that hurt?"
"Nope."
"Good. Up to bed with you."
"Yes, ma'am. I'll see you in the morning." Dean said, picking up his bags and heading up the stairs. He knew exactly what room he was looking for, third door on the left, but he stopped when he heard Adam trying to put Lyric back to sleep. As much as he valued his sleep, strangely, he couldn't wait to be up late at night putting his baby to sleep. Maybe having to play rock-paper-scissors with CJ because she was so independent and probably wouldn't want to him to miss out of any sleep.
All in due time, Ambrose. He had to coach himself, slowly turning the knob and letting the light from the hallway enter the dark room. As soon as the door opened it was closed, since he didn't want to risk her waking up. She needed her sleep, and he wasn't going to let her drive herself to exhaustion. He couldn't do that to her. He wouldn't.
Even in the dark he could make out her figure underneath the blanket. She was sleeping soundly and he made sure to get undressed quietly and ease into the bed gently, since this wasn't like her fancy memory foam bed. It felt like a dream, holding her tightly to his chest and pressing his forehead to her shoulder. Smelling the familiar coconut and mint of her hair and the vanilla of her body wash brought a smile to his face as he pressed a gentle kiss to her skin. It was so perfect to him and he had to briefly wonder how a guy like him could land a woman like her. A woman who was raised right although being in a single parent household for the majority of her lifetime. A woman who was relatively sane with her unpredictable moments. A woman who could have any man in the world just by throwing a wink in their direction, and she chose him.
Him.
Dean Ambrose. A man who was seen as a lunatic. A man who women could see having a wild night with but nothing long-term. A man who mothers kept their children away from. A man who was unpredictable and some felt needed to be straitjacketed and thrown into a rubber room with the key thrown away landed Christina Copeland. Not only did he land her, but she wanted to be with him and she was having his child.
He could only hope that he didn't screw this up.
God that man is such a babe. Oh my god. Just...unf. I could gush over Ambrose for hours. Feel free to message me if you want to gush with me.
