...
The rest of their trip to Hogwarts passed without much issue. His former best friends didn't try to interrupt them again. Though he had the feeling that their first interruption wouldn't be the last issue he had with them.
A few hours before they arrived a blond girl who seemed lost in her own little world joined them. Neville introduced them to each and Harrison learned that her name was Luna Lovegood. He also learned that if he valued his sanity to not try and decipher her words.
It was until they were less than an hour from the school that Malfoy decided to make his appearance. The blond haired boy seemed just as disgusted by Harrison's appearance in the section as Ron and Hermione had been.
When the door to their compartment opened he didn't even look up. Harrison was in the middle of trying a new rune sequence. Mentally he thanked Sherman for adding Runes to his training. The man was eccentric but there was no doubt he was a good teacher.
Harrison had learned through his books that he could switch electives before October of his fifth year. Of course he would have to take an exam to determine what year he would be allowed in for Ancient Runes. With Sherman's help he thought he could at least make it through fourth year exams. They did mostly book work until fifth year after all.
A snoty voice sneered, "Here I thought your taste in friends couldn't get any worse Potter. Yet here you are with Loony and Longbottom. At least the other two had some sense about them."
Harrison felt something shift within him at the words. Anger rose and the world shifted around him into sharper colors. The boy's scent made his nose scrunch in disgust. Unlike with his friends this boy's scent was heavy over him. To the young skinwalker's nose it was repugnant.
Still he returned coldly, "Malfoy if you're here simply to insult my friends just leave. I have no intentions of listening to it as I have better things to do."
"You dare?!"
Harrison rolled his eyes but didn't say anything else. The blond just wasn't worth the effort anymore. Especially given the contract that was in effect.
Neville returned his voice sounding more confident than he had ever heard before, "Harry is right Malfoy. You should leave before we make you leave. You were not invited to be here nor are you welcome."
Malfoy then drew his wand but a shield was thrown up by Harrison. The two Gryffindors had also drawn their wands as had the Ravenclaw. They were many things but stupid wasn't one of them.
Malfoy snarled but quickly realized that he was outnumbered. He left with his tail tucked between his legs. That left them with a peaceful quiet ride back to the school.
When they arrived Harrison he shrank his journal and placed it into his cloak. Then they headed out into the night air which was cool against his heated skin. He paused at the sight of what was pulling the carriages. Horses, skeletal horses that looked as if they were dead.
Luna said as her hand touched his shoulder kindly, "Only those who have seen death can see Thestrals. Being able to see them just means you're stronger than most."
Harrison swallowed his mind going to the end of the last year. Cedric... he hadn't really thought of the older boy much since he was saved by Matt. Being with the pack had pushed the pain to the back of his mind. Now it came back full force.
Taking a deep breath to center himself he entered the carriage. There was a lot about last year he could have done better. A lot that could have been changed by a decent adult in his life. Now things would begin to look up with his uncle and the pack.
The trip to the castle only took a few minutes. When they arrived at the steps he felt wards of the school brush against his magic. His magic responded back in kind and a warmth flooded him. They did as it always had and accepted him.
Once the carriages stopped he hopped out and headed into the Great Hall. Ron and Hermione once again tried to engage him in conversation but were quickly ignored. He and Neville took their places amongst the Gryffindors with Dean, Seamus and Collin filling in around them. They had seen what happened as they entered and decided to take his side.
Ron and Hermione were forced to sit towards the end of the table. The House stood by Harrison during the Tournament unlike his supposed friends. They could sense that he was no longer allowing the two control his life anymore.
When he looked up at the Head Table he saw an unfamiliar face. A woman in bright pink robes that looked like a toad sat there. His inner wolf shifted and wanted to growl at her. He knew that this woman would be problematic. Caution would be needed here.
Dean questioned quietly noticing his attention, "What is it?"
The others also turned their attention to him. They were curious about what could have caught his attention so soon.
Harrison replied keeping his voice low so to prevent easedropping, "That woman. Something about her is off and as such makes me nervous. Keep an eye on her. Yeah?"
Nods of acceptance were given. They would do as he asked without question. If he thought she was off he was most likely correct.
They listened to the sorting that was quickly followed by Dumbledore's speech. A speech that he ignored as it rarely changed. When it did change it was prejudiced against the Dark. As he began to learn about the Dark and their belief. Some of which he aligned himself with like bringing in magical children at a young age. Those who had muggles in their home would be checked in on more to ensure that they weren't abused. So many children could be helped, himself included, helped and saved.
Then the woman interrupted Dumbledore, "Thank you, Headmaster, for those kind words of welcome. And how lovely to see all your bright happy faces smiling up at me. I'm sure we're all going to be very good friends. The Ministry of Magic has always considered the education of young witches and wizards to be of vital importance. The rare gifts with which you were born may come to nothing if not nurtured and honed by careful instruction. The ancient skills unique to the Wizarding community must be passed down through the generations lest we lose them forever. The treasure trove of magical knowledge amassed by our ancestors must be guarded, replenished, and polished by those who have been called to the noble profession of teaching."
The Ministry was up to something and she had everything to do with.
"Every headmaster and headmistress of Hogwarts has brought something new to the weighty task of governing this historic school, and that is as it should be, for without progress there will be stagnation and decay. There again, progress for progress's sake must be discouraged, for our tried and tested traditions often require no tinkering. A balance, then, between old and new, between permanence and change, between tradition and innovation because some changes will be for the better, while others will come, in the fullness of time, to be recognized as errors of judgment. Meanwhile, some old habits will be retained, and rightly so, whereas others, outmoded and outworn, must be abandoned. Let us move forward, then, into a new era of openness, effectiveness, and accountability, intent on preserving what ought to be preserved, perfecting what needs to be perfected, and pruning wherever we find practices that ought to be prohibited."
Dumbledore then said as she sat back down, "Thank you Professor Umbridge, that really was most illuminating."
"Illuminating? What a load of waffle!" Came Ron's cry that made Harrison wince.
He knew the boy was dense but that was taking it to a whole different level. By the looks on the others faces they felt the same way. Hermione being the know it all she was tried to explain it to Ron but the rest of the Gryffindors ignored her.
