The sound of Olivia fussing through the baby monitor stirred Dean from his sleep and he looked down at CJ while she slept soundly on his chest. It's had been so long since they cuddled like this and he wanted to savor it, but his Princess needed him. So he carefully moved CJ onto her pillow before he got out of bed and headed to the nursery. As soon as he entered the room her fussing turned into loud wailing and Dean quickly moved to get her out of the crib since he didn't want to wake anybody else up.
"Hush, darlin'." Dean whispered, resting her on his shoulder and rubbing her back. "Daddy's here so you don't need to cry anymore, okay?"
The cries continued and he sighed, trying to figure out what exactly was wrong. His panic level was slowly rising, but he was keeping calm on the outside as he thought through all the possible problems that could be with an ten day old baby. He heard a cough and felt sudden warmth on his tshirt and gently pulled her off of him to look her in her bright blue eyes.
"You seriously just threw up on me?" He asked with a small frown, laying her on the changing table in the room. She immediately started crying again and Dean quickly removed his shirt before pulling off her little pajama pants and checking her diaper. "That explains it. Hang on, Princess."
Dean really didn't mind changing diapers once he had learned how. Of course, it had taken a few days for him to be comfortable doing it without somebody watching him to make sure he did it right, but he was comfortable now. As soon as he was done with the diaper and had her pants back on, he noticed that there was vomit on the front of her shirt and sighed, quickly undoing the little buttons and getting it off of her. It was then that he brought her back onto his shoulder and sat down in the rocking chair in the corner.
He was tired, and he knew she was tired because the crying had dulled into her drooling on his shoulder while he gently rocked the chair and rubbed her back until he thought she was sleeping. He stood to place her back in the crib, but the fussing started up again and he sighed, carrying her out of the nursery and to his bedroom. Once he was in bed and had the duvet pulled up to Olivia's neck, CJ shifted to lay her head on the other side of his chest and draped her arm across his stomach.
This was his family. His whole world consisted of two people, a dog, and professional wrestling, and he was perfectly fine with that. He'd said it before and he'd go to the grave saying it, Olivia didn't have to be his blood to be his daughter. They'd find out for sure if she was his blood or not when he, Seth, and CJ sat down at the dinner table and opened up the envelope that had arrived the day before.
"Stop thinking and go to bed." CJ mumbled and he looked down to see her staring up at him. "What's on your mind, Dean?"
"Your pretty face." He lied with a smile, getting a quiet laugh out of her while her hand reached up to push back his hair.
"No seriously, what's on your mind?"
"How great it is to have an actual family. I never really had one before, but I have one now and I can't thank you enough for it."
"Ambrose, you don't have to thank me for anything. Everything we have is because you stepped up to the plate." She spoke with a small smile, scooting up to chastely kiss his lips. "Pat yourself on the back every so often, okay?"
"If I do that, then karma comes around and takes it all from me." He reasoned, smile fading as the thoughts of losing everything crept into his mind once again.
"Karma isn't taking me or her away, Dean." CJ assured, making sure to hold his eye contact. "Don't listen to anything telling you otherwise. They're all wrong."
"You're right."
"I know. Where'd your shirts go?"
"She threw up on me and it got into her shirt, too." Dean explained, his smile returning when she bit her lip to hold in her laughter. "Hilarious. I know."
"You're such a trooper." She giggled, leaning in to kiss him once again. "I love you for it."
"I love you, too. Get some sleep, darlin', I know you're tired."
"I'm always tired. Happy birthday, by the way."
"It is the seventh, isn't it?"
"Yeah. Beth and I will probably go out and get a little cake from somewhere so we can celebrate."
"You don't have to-"
"Yes I do." CJ cut him off before laying back down. "Don't fight it, and don't get all standoffish on me either. Just let it happen, alright?"
"Alright." Dean sighed, bringing his free arm around her waist and holding her to him tightly. "Goodnight, Copeland."
"Goodnight, Ambrose."
Dean, Seth, and CJ gathered in the living room at four in the morning for one very important reason. CJ held the large white envelope in her hands while she sat in between the two men on the couch. Ten days earlier, the close proximity with Seth would've bothered both Dean and CJ, but they had both seen parts of the old Seth in during the last few days that made them a bit more comfortable with him than they had been before.
"I don't want to open this and start world war three, so I need to know that everything is still going to be kosher in this house once we know what science says." CJ stated, looking between the two men. Dean gave a slow nod and Seth did the same, the younger actually extending his hand to Dean as a sign of peace.
"You have my word." Seth spoke and Dean held in a comment about how his word didn't mean much and shook hands with his ex best friend.
"Ditto. Open it, babe."
"Alright." She spoke softly, gently tearing at the seal of the envelope. Both men knew how delicate she was with mail and both were hating her for it right now. The anticipation was eating at both Dean and Seth, both men fighting the urge to just snatch the envelope from her and open it themselves.
"CJ, not to be rude or anything-"
"But can you speed it along, sweets?" Dean finished for Seth, both men offering small smiles when she looked between them.
"Sorry." She whispered, involuntarily tensing when Seth gently placed a hand on her wrist.
"No need to apologize." The two toned man assured and she nodded, relaxing before tearing the envelope open the rest of the way. Her hands were shaking as she pulled the sheets of paper out of the envelope, discarding the cover letter explaining what was done to test the samples and obtain the results by setting it in Seth's lap.
"You're both not excluded... But that makes no sense." CJ whispered and Dean squinted as he read the paper.
"It's possible, through."
"But she's got more of Dean than she goes of me." Seth pointed out, looking at the percentages. "So congrats man."
"Congrats to you, too." Dean spoke with a small smile and Seth smiled up at the older man before both looked to the confused woman sitting between them. "You okay?"
"Just a bit surprised." She spoke softly, looking between the two. "They said it was rare."
"A lot of rare things have happened to us, darlin'." Dean commented, offering a supportive smile.
"I'll make things easy and step down. But I'd like to be around on her birthdays and kept updated on milestones and things." Seth stated, gently patting CJ's thigh.
"Of course." She and Dean spoke in unison, their bright blue eyes showing how sincere they were being. He was honestly surprised, but he wasn't going to question it. They had all been doing so well about being civil and he didn't want to ruin that.
"Do I tell my mom?"
"If you want to." CJ stated, shrugging her shoulders. "That one is totally on you. But make sure she knows that she's not allowed to be a bitch around my baby."
"I told her off whenever she was a bitch about you. She likes babies though, so I dunno how she'd react."
"I am so glad I don't have parental reactions to worry about. Unlike you nerds." Dean teased, making both Seth and CJ laugh. He knew that he'd be able to keep civil at home, even though he desperately wanted to smack Seth around a little bit just because he knew CJ would let it happen.
"You two have made a very powerful enemy." Adam commented over breakfast and CJ looked up at him in confusion.
"In who?"
"A certain nerd is very upset that his niece didn't call, text, tweet, or DM him about a certain pregnancy and the birth of a certain baby." Both Seth and Dean were lost at this point and looked between the two as CJ let out an exasperated sigh. Bear hopped into her lap and she pushed her plate out of his reach just in time before she began scratching him behind his ears.
"He didn't tell me about his baby. The baby info train goes both ways, Adam."
"You can tell him that when he gets here." Adam mumbled before taking a drink of his coffee while CJ stared at him.
"He isn't."
"Oh, but he is." Judith stated as she set Lyric in her high chair and another sigh left the young blonde. "Happy birthday, Dean."
"Thank you." Dean chimed in before going back to watching Seth with Olivia. Seth was only in town until the afternoon, and then he'd be flying to wherever raw was that week and Dean would be on a flight out there the following morning. He had to resume regular traveling duties until Christmas, and then he'd be on paternity leave until March first. Vince was very generous with the timeline when first presented to him so he turned down Vince's offer for longer time since Olivia was early. That, and he didn't want to feel indebted to any of the McMahons. That would most likely end badly for him.
"Doesn't he have stuff to do?"
"Dealing with you will always come before his to-do list." Adam reminded, watching as Bear made an attempt to climb onto the table before CJ pulled him back again. "You might've hurt his feelings."
"Mine were hurt, too." She argued, giving in and tearing a bacon strip before feeding it to Bear.
"Tell him, not me."
"Who are we talking about?" Dean asked, having to shift in his seat when everybody but Seth and the babies responded in unison. "Who the hell is Jay?"
"Christian." Adam clarified. "'Adam and Jay' didn't sound that awesome."
"It really doesn't." CJ agreed, going back to her breakfast to the best of her ability. She didn't want to let Bear get to her food but she didn't want to set him down so she made it work. The good thing about it was that she didn't have the baby bump anymore so she could lean into the table and not press Bear into the table. "I love being bump-less. I'm kinda pudgy, like, for me, but I'm good without my balloon on my stomach."
Beth, CJ, and Judith took the babies to the store while Adam and Dean took Seth to the airport and CJ was a bit nervous about having her baby out in public. She liked how nicely dressed Olivia was so she wanted to show off what she and Dean, and partially Seth, had made together. But she constantly feared being mobbed over the possibility of word about her her being pregnant and going into labor getting out. But that proved to be a silly fear, because the only attention Olivia and Lyric got were from older women who had no clue who she and Beth were. But every woman looked disgusted when they didn't see a ring on CJ's finger, to which she ignored even thought it bothered the hell out of her.
Not everybody had to get married just because they had a kid. Forced situations like that were how people grew to resent each other and she never wanted to resent Dean. Of he ever put a ring on her finger, it would be because he wanted to and not because he felt obligated to.
But that made her question whether or not a ring was in her future with Dean. When she was fourteen she had started to piece together her dream wedding. It had taken a couple years, but she had it all mapped out in her head and on paper and she feared never being able to have that beautiful moment where Adam walked her down the isle and threatened to kill the groom if anything happened to her. Of course her love for Dean outweighed her want to get married and she'd happily be his long-term girlfriend and eventual common law wife, but a part of her would always want that wedding of her dreams.
"Chrissie, you've been quiet since we left the store." Beth commented, successfully bringing CJ out of her thoughts while she drove. "What are you thinking about?"
"Those old ladies and the faces they made when they saw that I wasn't married. I know it shouldn't bother me, because I know Dean loves me, but-"
"You fear that you'll never get married." Judith cut in from the backseat and CJ nodded.
"I just wish I knew what Dean's stance on marriage was and how to ask without making it sound like I want to get married tomorrow, y'know?"
"If anybody would know how to ask, it would be you." Beth commented, looking over at CJ while the younger blonde bit her lip.
"The man is more complicated than that cube with the colors whose name escapes me right now." CJ argued, keeping her voice down as to not wake the sleeping babies. "We're pretty open with each other and I still haven't completely figured the man out."
"A little mystery never hurt." Judith assured and CJ nodded her agreement.
"I never said that it did."
"Do you think Dean has you figured out?" Beth asked and CJ shook her head. "So you're even for the moment."
"Some would say." CJ spoke softly, her gears still turning over getting married. It wasn't so much that she wanted a wedding, but she wanted some physical symbol of commitment that she could wear proudly and say that it was a gift from her boyfriend. But Dean wasn't much of a romantic so he probably didn't think like they and probably thought that the house, baby, and dog were enough to prove that he wasn't walking away. They were for her, but she was getting tired of the dirty looks and it had only been a couple hours.
When Dean and Adam got back from dropping Seth off at the airport, all the women were standing at the dinner table around a cake that Beth was lighting the candles on. CJ smiled at him and gestured to the chair she was standing by, and he quickly complied as Adam stood beside Beth. He looked at the cake and saw that it said 'Happy birthday Dean!' written on it in dark blue icing ontop of the baby blue icing already on it. There were boats and other little decorative things on it and it was obviously an impromptu purchase, but it made him smile. It truly was the thought that mattered most to him right now.
"You guys don't have to sing." Dean stated, looking around at the unimpressed family.
"It's your birthday, so we're singing." Beth insisted and Dean shook his head with a smile as he pulled CJ into his lap. Her arm came to rest on his shoulder and he felt her fingers in his hair as she and the others sang the classic Happy Birthday tune to him.
"Make a wish." CJ prompted, smiling as he looked up at her and around the table at his family.
"I can't ask for much more, since I already have what I've always wanted."
"Don't be cheesy." Adam teased, earning a playful smack on the arm from Judith since Beth was holding Olivia and couldn't.
"Alright, I got it." Dean spoke before blowing out the two candles on the cake and receiving a kiss on the cheek from CJ.
"When are you guys heading out?" Adam asked, smirking as CJ's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"We're going somewhere?"
"In a couple hours."
"Where are we going?" She asked, still confused at the way Dean and Adam were basically communicating through eye contact. It was freaking her out.
"Don't worry about it." Adam stated, winking at CJ before accepting the knife from Judith to cut the cake. "Small piece, Chrissie?"
"Yes please. We got paper plates and plasticware so that nobody has to wash anything."
"Smart ladies." Dean praised, giving his girlfriend a gentle squeeze. She rest her head on his shoulder and kissed his jaw, smiling when he smiled at her touch. "I love you."
"I love you, too." He spoke softly, patting her side gently. "And to answer your question, we are going on a date."
"Have we ever been on a date?"
"If all of our breakfast meetings in the beginning don't count then there's a first time for everything."
"You're definitely right." She agreed, trying to contain her excitement over going on a date with Dean. She felt like she was a teenager, even though she didn't date as a teen. She didn't think that she had even been on an actual date, since prom with Jay definitely didn't count because she was forced out of the house and they left to get ice cream twenty minutes in.
An hour later CJ was laying on their bed with Olivia while she watched Dean go through their closet. She wasn't sure what he was looking for so she just laid there and talked to her while they stared at each other. Dean muttered some curses which brought CJ's attention back to him.
"What's wrong babe?"
"I can't find your jacket."
"You mean the one that I'm wearing?" She asked, smiling when he turned to look at her and nodded slowly. "Where are we going, Ambrose?"
"It's a surprise. I'm not telling you again."
"Silly girl, that's my hair." CJ said with a smile, untangling the small hand from her hair. "I didn't think she'd be so grabby this young."
"She's an Ambrose. Grabby is how we do." Dean spoke with a smile as he laid down on the bed, boxing Olivia between the two of them. CJ smiled at the way Dean gently ran his hand over the thin blonde hairs on Olivia's head, the look of pure adoration in his eyes telling her that he was already wrapped around her tiny finger and that made her so happy. "We're leaving in twenty minutes."
"Alright."
"Are we at a sports bar?" CJ asked once Dean had parked and he nodded.
"It's technically a pub, darlin'." He corrected with a smirk and she shook her head. "I figured super fancy wasn't really our deal, and it's not really the location but the company you're in."
"You didn't have to explain it, Dean. It's your birthday, wherever you want is good for me." She assured as she got out of the car and he smiled with satisfaction as he followed her lead. He did the gentlemanly thing and held the door open for her, then held her hand in his as they found a booth in the back to sit at. "This is nice."
"It's definitely a nicer bar than what I'm used to." Dean agreed, noticing that she was slightly nervous. "What are you drinking?"
"I'll have a beer. Just one, and then I'm on water with lemon wedges for the rest of the night."
"Alright. I heard the fish and chips here are good, does that tickle your fancy?"
"It actually does." CJ spoke with a smile, watching as he stood from the booth.
"Sit tight. I'll be right back." He spoke, guiding her into a sweet kiss before heading up to the bar to place their order. Every so often he'd glance back at her until he grabbed the female bartender's attention.
"What'll it be, handsome?"
"Two Heineken and two orders of the fish and chips for the table with the pretty blonde in the leather jacket." Dean requested, lightly tapping the bar counter while the bartender smiled at him.
"First round of drinks is on the house, solely because you're such a sweetheart. Now get back to her."
"Thank you, sweetheart." He called as he weaved through the people to get back to his girl. She tugged on the sleeves of her jacket, something that he knew was a nervous habit of hers, and he smiled at her. "What's on your mind?"
"Hm?"
"You're acting nervous, what's up?"
"I've never really been on a date before so this is pretty brand new to me." CJ admitted, looking down at her lap. Dean only reached across the table, sticking two fingers beneath her chin to guide her head up to make eye contact with him.
"You're telling me that nobody has ever asked you on a date before?"
"I've been asked, but I never went because I assumed people just wanted to get close to me because Edge was my dad."
"Understandable. I've got to make this the night of your life, then."
"Please don't do anything extravagant, Ambrose. I'm with you, and that's what matters." She spoke softly, pulling his hand away from her chin and holding it in hers. "I love you."
"I love you, too."
"Promise that you won't try to make this about me when it's your birthday."
"I promise." For emphasis, he held out his pinky and met her incredulous face with a serious gaze. "C'mon, babe. My arm is getting tired."
"You're something else, y'know that?" She asked as she locked her pinky with his and he grinned at her.
"But you love me for it."
"I do. Take a picture for Instagram."
"Can I make any face I want?"
"Yes, my dearest, and no you don't have to smile in any way." She assured as their drinks were brought over. Dean took a drink out of his bottle while CJ got her phone out of her pocket and turned in the booth so she could take a selfie with him. He made a surprised face while she just smiled, the first attempt pleasing her while she fixed her position in the booth.
'Birthday dinner with this sexy beast. Twenty nine and still fine. #HappyBirthdayAmbrose'
CJ was so focused on her phone that she didn't notice Dean take a picture of her until it was posted on her instagram feed right after.
"You should get your own Instagram." She teased, smiling up at him before reading the caption for his post.
'Isn't she stunning? There's nobody else I'd rather spend my birthday with. -DA'
"Did you steal that from a movie or are you this romantic all the time?" She laughed before lifting her beer bottle to her lips. "Seriously."
"I don't want my own Instagram. Yours is much more fun." Dean stated as he drank more of his beer and she shook her head with a smile. "And I only ever get like this for you, so feel special, Christina."
"I feel so special, Dean. You have no idea."
"So what's the deal with Jay?"
"He and Adam have been friends for longer than we've been alive, so when Adam brought me to Toronto from Winnipeg, he was one of the first people to really take interest in me other than Adam and Judith. He convinced Adam to teach me how to wrestle, was my first crush, my prom date, but now he's just my Uncle Jay."
"So he's a big deal to you."
"Huge deal."
"Why did you move to Toronto?" Dean asked, regretting the question when she looked down at the bottle in her hands. "You don't have to answer, I just-"
"No. You should know." She interrupted him, biting her lip as she thought about how to word it. She knew Dean would be understanding, but she didn't like revealing her innermost factoids. "My mom passed when I was sixteen. Ted called Chris and Chris told Adam he wanted nothing to do with me so Adam stepped up and gave me a fresh start."
"How did she pass, if you don't mind me asking."
"AIDS. She didn't know until it was too late to try treating it and I only had about three months to mentally prepare for my mom dying." CJ explained, avoiding eye contact with Dean even though she knew that he wouldn't look down on her with pity.
"I always knew that there was a reason why you were so strong." He spoke softly, moving around to sit beside her so he could pull her into his arms. "My tough girl."
"You're wonderful, Sir Ambrose."
"Only to you, your highness." He whispered in her ear before kissing her temple. "Thank you for sharing."
When the two got home they were greeted by the dogs and had to weave through them to get to the stairs. Dean took CJ by the hand and led her up the stairs and to the nursery to check on Olivia before they went to their bedroom and shut the door before any four legged creature could follow them inside.
Dean stood patiently while CJ pushed his jacket off his shoulders and tugged his shirt off. He knew that she couldn't have sex yet, but he knew that there was a plan brewing in her mind.
"On the bed." She instructed, shrugging out of her jacket and heading into their closet. He did as instructed and leaned against the headboard, watching as she dug around for something on the floor of their closet. He took that time to kick off his shoes and appreciate the view of his girlfriend's ass as she was bent over. She stood and turned around, keeping her hands out of his sight until she tucked away whatever it was in her back pockets. She climbed onto the bed and straddled his lap, cupping his cheeks in her hands and kissing him. He was pleasantly surprised by her wanting to take action and followed along, resting his hands on her hips and smiling when she pulled away.
"What do you have planned?"
"Do you trust me?" She whispered in his ear before kissing down his jawline and making her way to his lips again.
"With my life."
"Sooo these won't be an issue?" CJ asked coyly, pulling a set of hand cuffs out of her back pocket and let them dangle on her finger. The way she bit her lip sent signals to his length and he couldn't nod his approval fast enough.
"I'd cuff me now just in case I forget that I'm not allowed to fuck you for another five weeks, baby."
"Lay down, then."
"This is the best birthday ever."
