"You two really know how to fuck up a friendship." Adam sighed, bringing a sigh out of CJ. She was wide awake as their bus drove along during the night; Dean and Olivia were fast asleep in the back bedroom so she was curled on the couch with a blanket and some M&Ms, a movie playing on the television, and her laptop open on the couch beside her while she video chatted with Adam. "I don't want to be in the middle of this."
"Let the record reflect that I was trying to keep you out of this."
"You broke his heart when you told him to stay away. Did you expect him to not call me?"
"Did he mention not answering any of my calls or texts with some notion that he was alive? I tried for two weeks, and then let him act like I didn't exist for the last four. That broke my heart, dad."
"I know it did. You're watching The Nightmare Before Christmas, which has been your comfort movie since it came out." Adam reasoned, prompting CJ to pause the movie. "I'm not saying that what he did was right, because it was extremely fucked up, but you've got to work things out with him."
"Why? So Denise can go batshit crazy and he'll ignore me again?" CJ asked, reaching for more M&Ms and shoveling them into her mouth. "Thanks, but I'll pass."
"I had to listen to him cry over the phone for twenty minutes because he's that broken up over it all."
"Dad-"
"Don't you whine at me, Christina Jeanette. Listen." Adam cut her off, "dad tone" in full effect and a serious expression on his face. She knew then that she was in for a serious lecture about how she handled things with Jay and how she needed to fix them. The problem was that she didn't want to hear it. "Are you listening?"
"Yes."
"Im not excusing what he did, but he fucking loves you. Knowing that you're pissed at him and want nothing to do with him at this moment in time is tearing him apart and you know it."
"But-"
"I am not done." Adam spoke in a tone so stern that even Beth paused in the background to look at him. "I know that you're hurting, too. I never said that you weren't. But this time I need you to man the fuck up and hear him out. You don't have to forgive him, but you need to let him explain."
"Alright." CJ sighed, looking up to see Dean cradling his wrist in the doorway to their bedroom on the bus. "You okay, Ambrose?"
"Do we have any cold packs?"
"Look in the freezer. Make sure to wrap it in something."
"You got it." Dean mumbled as he dug through their stocked freezer. Instead of a cold pack, he found a bag of frozen fruit and wrapped that in a towel before pressing it to his wrist and looking to his girlfriend as he backed towards the bedroom. "You coming to bed soon?"
"Yeah. Just catching up with Adam. Twenty minutes, tops."
"What's wrong with him?" Adam asked once her face had visibly relaxed, meaning that Dean was comfortably situated in bed.
"I dunno, he won't tell me. I'm guessing it's his wrist, but I can't think of when he could've hurt himself."
"His match?"
"Against Zack Ryder?" She asked, knowing that the two were friends. "Pretty sure that Broski Boot didn't connect with his wrist. Or him at all."
"I'm telling Zack you said that."
"Go for it."
"Talk to Jay. I'm not saying you have to do it tomorrow, because I'd definitely let him sit on what he did for about a week. But soon, please, kiddo."
"Sure thing." CJ sighed, not wanting to talk to Jay at all. But she'd get over herself eventually and talk to him for Adam's sake. "G'night dad."
"Night, kiddo. Love you."
"Love you, too. Bye." When she shut her laptop, Dean emerged from the bedroom and sat down beside her. She pulled the fruit bag away from his wrist and examined it closely before gently kissing it and standing to put the fruit back into the freezer. Dean had watched her from the couch, waiting until she sat down to use his good hand to situate the blanket while he cuddled into her. "What did you do to yourself, babe?"
"I tripped running up the stairs."
"What did we learn?"
"Not to run up the stairs." He mumbled, laying his head on her chest as she leaned back against the arm of the couch. Her hand started to gently pet his head, switching between scratching and massaging his scalp as she did so. He let out a small groan of satisfaction and she kissed his head before looking back to the still paused movie.
"It's probably just a sprain, but you should have Doc take a look at it tomorrow, baby."
"I'll be okay, sweetheart. I just need to take it easy."
"Ambrose."
"If it doesn't start getting better by Thursday, I'll go see Doc about it." Dean mumbled, smiling when she kissed the top of his head and pushed play on her movie. It was one he'd watched with her loads of times while she was pregnant and had learned to enjoy. Musicals weren't his thing, much less animated musicals. He knew that it was near the end, and when it was over she'd be ready to lay down in their bed.
"Wednesday." She stated simply, and he knew that she wasn't interested in budging on her decision. He knew it was because she cared about him, but he could handle it. It was a bum wrist, not kidney failure.
"Thursday." He argued, basically for the sake of arguing because she wasn't going to stand down and he knew that she wouldn't. That wasn't her style.
"For my own peace of mind, Ambrose, can we please do Wednesday?"
"But only because I love you so much and hate having you worry about me."
"Asshole." She mumbled into his hair with a smile, kissing his head again before looking back to the television. The bus was so lavish, it almost drove her crazy. She wasn't meant for this- the high life. She wasn't used to it. Dean treated her right, like his Queen, but he never spent too much money on her. He knew that she had limits, The Authority obviously did not.
But she'd enjoy the high life while she could, since it would keep her and Dean healthy and well rested while they traveled. Right now, that was all she could ever ask for.
Dean woke up with his head on CJ's chest, her fingers still in his hair. She was mumbling something about how much she loved him, but he could barely hear what she was saying. He picked up the key words, but he liked listening to her talk to him while she thought he was sleeping instead of him talking to her while she was sleeping.
"I love you, too, Copeland." Dean mumbled, snuggling closer to her. Her arms tightened around him, another kiss was pressed to the top of his head, and he smiled wider.
"You were supposed to be asleep, Ambrose."
"I don't sleep too much. You know this."
"Butthead."
"You love me."
"You're still a butthead." She mumbled as Olivia started fussing. "Olive must not agree."
"She loves her daddy." Dean mumbled, sitting up straight before standing up. She didn't bother to get up, since Dean was going to bring Olivia to her anyways. She just let her eyes slide closed until she heard her boyfriend cuss and Olivia's crying.
"Dean?"
"I'm okay." She didn't believe him, and made her way into the bedroom to see him holding his wrist while obviously trying to figure out how to tend to Olivia one-handed. "Really, babe, I'm okay."
"Please go talk to Doc today." She whispered, picking up Olivia and gently bouncing her. "Good morning, Olive."
"CJ, I'm okay."
"You could've dropped her. Are you really willing to take that chance for the sake of your pride?" CJ asked, eyeing her boyfriend with obvious anger in her eyes.
"It's just my wrist."
"And if you don't get it checked it'll just be your career." CJ warned before carrying Olivia out to the main area of the bus. Frustrated and officially out of options, Dean let out a groan before getting dressed. They'd be at their destination in a few minutes and he'd go straight to Peaches and they'd figure out what was wrong with his wrist. Chances are, CJ was right and it was just a sprain. He hoped it was only a sprain, because he didn't have time for anything worse than a sprain. He was a father and needed to be there for his daughter and future wife at the very least.
"I'm sorry that I'm an ass." Dean mumbled, sitting down next to CJ as she fed Olivia. The blonde only nodded, watching Olivia closely for some reason. "Is she okay?"
"Yeah, she's fine. I just like to watch her sometimes." She assured, looking up at Dean briefly. "She just fascinates me."
"It's amazing that we made her, right?" He asked, shifting closer as his girlfriend nodded. "It's been three months and I still get blown away sometimes."
"Our little Olivia."
"She's gonna look just like you."
"I hope her hair darkens a bit."
"Yeah." Dean murmured, his hand gently caressing the top of Olivia's head. "I love the light blonde, but it'll make her stand out like a sore thumb with us."
"Yeah." CJ whispered as her phone vibrated against the countertop in the kitchen, redirecting the attention of the parents from their daughter to her phone. Both were a bit upset by this, but Dean stood to get her phone while CJ started to burp Olivia. "Who is it?"
"Jay."
"Fuck him." CJ stated, standing with the baby to head back to the bedroom. "I've got a match and a photoshoot today. I don't really have time for Jay."
"Saint Patrick's Day shoot?"
"Yeah. They're setting up an area backstage for that."
"Speaking of that particular day..." Dean started, following her to the back and trailing off until she look at him. "What do you want to do?"
"I dunno. I get ice cream with Adam but we can't do that this year." CJ mumbled, laying Olivia on the bed and beginning to undress her. "It's like the first time ever that we're both unable to compromise and it sucks."
"It'll be okay, darlin'." Dean assured, gently rubbing her back as he set down Olivia's outfit for the day. His gears were turning, though. She was clearly upset by not being able to follow tradition, which was completely understandable. He had to figure out a way to keep her occupied, but not make it seem like he was trying to replace her tradition with a new one. He wasn't sure how to do that.
But he knew for sure that he needed to call Adam.
"And CJ Jericho with the Enzuigiri to Alicia Fox." Cole spoke excitedly, bringing a smirk onto Chris' face as he watched his daughter from commentary. She was good, really good, and he'd give her that. But she was almost too good and he absolutely hated it.
"You must be so proud, Chris. She's bounced back from a possibly career ending knee injury and it's like she hasn't missed a beat." Tom Phillips commented, looking around JBL to the older Jericho.
"Y'know I'm very proud, Tom. She's a tough nut. But she is my daughter so that's to be expected." Chris spoke calmly, watching as his daughter received a slap to the face from the taller diva but quickly recovered and went for a double leg takedown. "There's a standard of excellence that comes with the Jericho last name and she upholds it perfectly."
"They're going to roll out of the ring!" JBL spoke in concern, watching as the two women battled back and forth for who was on top. Both had handfuls of each other's hair and used that for leverage until they actually rolled out of the ring and to the floor. "There's a cat fight at ringside!"
"C'mon, Junior, you're better than this." Chris mumbled, but it was still caught by the microphone. Cole, as attentive as ever, quickly picked up on the blonde's concern and was quick to inquire about it as the referee started counting.
"She's gained control of the matchup this way. Is that not good enough, Chris?"
"We are ring technicians. She, in particular, is a submission specialist. There's no need for her to get into a battle over who pulls hair harder." Chris tried his best to save face, watching as CJ whipped Alicia into the steel steps before aiming a kick into the slumped over woman's rib cage. She then slid back into the ring and into a ready position if Alicia were to roll into the ring.
"The referee at a count of six, now, and Alicia on her feet and back into the ring."
"But CJ doesn't stop." Tom commented as CJ performed a picture perfect standing drop kick before going for the pin. "And only a two count."
"So what are your plans, Chris? Are you two looking for titles, or just being a tag team?"
"As always, she's got the Divas Championship on her mind and another kick ass performance at WrestleMania, and I just want to help her get there." Chris gave his best explanation, inwardly hoping that he was even in the ballpark as CJ flipped Alicia into The Walls of Jericho. They honestly hadn't spoken of their long term plan, but WrestleMania was in their sights for sure. Alicia began to tap the mat rapidly in submission and Chris stood as the bell rung. He was clapping for his daughter, but still plotting her downfall. It truly was a shame, because she was really fan favorite right now.
So, now we've learned that Chris has no clue what he's going to do. He just knows that he's going to do something to ruin CJ. Writing bad guy Jericho is so hard for me because I'm a diehard Jericholic and will be for a really long time. Forever.
Anyways, big thank you's go out to nattiebroskette, ChelleLew, UntilNeverDawns, Sarcastic Nughtmare, calwitch, JeffhardyChicka365, and ItReignsJustice-619 for reviewing the last chapter! You guys are amazing!
