The precinct was exactly as he remembered it when he followed Ella down the stairs. Of course, it has only been a few months for them. But after many, many years the familiar smells hit him with nostalgia. The many memories of his years working alongside the detective catching criminals. The precinct was usually buzzing but today was filled with solemn faces, mourning the void in the room. Lucifer's eyes landed on her vacant desk as he slowly walked towards it. His hand gripped on to the office chair. The desk was covered with flowers and baskets from well-wishers, that they knocked over the picture of the detective with her offspring. Lucifer pick it up and place it back where it belonged.
"Lucifer! You're here?" The devil turned to see an officer he recognized from evidence lockup. Her eyes were sadden but she did have a smile for him.
"Cacuzza." The man greeted the woman. "Good to see you." He mustered up a weak smile.
"Can you believe what's happened to Detective Decker?" The woman voice was filled with disbelief. "It's absolutely awful. Is it true that her right side has second degree burns from the explosion?" Lucifer didn't know how to respond, the conversation about the detective current condition made him feel uneasy, his eyes searched the room for Ella, who seemed to disappear, for a reason to escape, but the officer continued. "It's crazy to think that it could of have been anyone of us. I hear she was lucky, that it could have been a lot worst. But still, the recovery is going to be painful one." Lucifer attention was pulled when noticed a couple talking to Lieutenant Ross. The woman was hysterically crying in the man's arms. "It's so great that you came back to see her.'
"Mmmm?" Lucifer turned back to the officer who was still talking to him.
"That's why your back, right?" Cucuzza asked the man before her. "Chloe explained to us why you had to leave but she hasn't been the same, not since you left." Lucifer made eye contact with the officer for the firs time. "She always seemed sad. Even caught her crying in the bathroom once." The man's heart shattered when he learned how his absence had affected his detective. "I'm sure she'll be glad to know that you came back for her." It's not often that the devil was speechless, but at this moment he didn't know how to feel, let alone respond to the officer before him.
"Lucifer!" Ella called out from the laboratory.
"I'm sorry." The man was relieved to have reason to leave this uncomfortable exchange. "I'm needed." He rushed off to see the scientist, passing the Lieutenant and the grieving couple.
"Who is MacCallum taking to?" Lucifer asked when he enter the lab, wanting to get his mind off of what the officer told him.
"The Colbert's. James parents." Ella informed, the pair both looked out the window. "It must be so hard to learn that their son's guts are all over sunset. I can't imagine the pain they are going through."
"Those are the human stain's parents." Lucifer scoffed looking at the put together couple. "Clearly delusional of their son's extracurricular activities. I'm sure if they knew who he really was, a disappointment, they would have been pleased with the outcome."
"That's a little dark, don't you think." Ella looked up at the man. "Parents will always love their children no matter how far the fall. It's in their nature, always hoping that their children can turn their lives around. Wanting the best for them."
"Tell that to my parents." Lucifer sighed, his eyes looking upwards for a moment.
"I doubt you haven't fallen as far as James did." Ella turned and headed towards her computer. "I'm sure you parents still love you."
"If you only knew." The devil spun on his heels to face the woman on the other side of the counter. "Shall we watch the apartment surveillance." The man wanted to drop anything that had to do with his family or with Chloe and focus on their suspect.
"First, I checked James email, like you suggested on the way over." Ella shook her head. "I don't know how you do it but, again you were right, there was an email sent to James yesterday morning." The woman turned the laptop towards him.
"You are going to pay for what you did. She didn't deserve to be broken by you. She had her whole life in front of her before she met you. When you broke her heart, it destroyed her. You destroyed her. I want to see you punished for what you did to her. Follow the instructions I sent you or else you family will pay the price. I know where they live…"
Lucifer read the message aloud and stopped when he reached the families information. "These addresses are…?" He began to asked Ella, who spoke up before the consultant could finish.
"Yeah. They are legit. All of James' immediate family." Ella informed the man. "The guy was scared for their safety. I would be scared too. It's definitely personal. My guess is a family member of this girl he is talking about. Unfortunately, the email was blocked so I couldn't locate the IP address. But, if we go by the time the email was sent, I'm sure we can find our shooter with the box in the footage shortly after it was sent." Ella had a cheeky smirk on her face.
"Clever as always." Lucifer walked around the counter to the computer as Ella fast forward the apartment surveillance footage to when the email was sent. Ella fast forward the video, playing if there was any movement in the stairwell. It was twelves minutes in when they noticed someone carrying the box. She paused the video, but the face was not visible, the person wore a hood that hid their face. She fast-forwarded the footage a little more and the watched the faceless human in basic black walk away.
"Well, back to the drawing board." Ella let out a disappointed sigh.
"That's it?" Lucifer looked at the woman with confusion. "There has to more to the video."
"It was a good lead, Lucifer. We now know this is personally. So, we need to figure out who the email is about." Ella was determined to push forward despite the set back.
"How?" Lucifer asked with a sigh.
"I'll go through his computer, his emails, see if I can get names of former lovers or something. Anything." The woman began working on the bomber's computer. "It may take a while."
"A while? But I don't have a while." The devil pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"Well, if James Colbert was alive it would be easier." Ella looked up at the man. "But he is dead, so we just have to do a little investigation." Lucifer let out an irritated sigh and turned to leave.
"Did you find anything?" Lieutenant MacCallum walked in blocking Lucifer's exit, but that didn't stop the devil. He pushed his way past the man and out of the room. "What's up with him?" The man asked looking back.
"He is anxious to solve the case. We had a tiny set back." The scientist gave the lieutenant a shy smile.
"James Colbert! Freeze." Every time her hears her voice, there is a flutter that happens in his stomach. But this time he felt nauseous, he couldn't even bear to look back at her. His eyes remain on his target. The world once again frozen by his hand.
"Hello Jimmy!" Lucifer walked with purpose towards the man, who had seen better days.
"It's you, I'm so glad to see you." The man let out a pathetic cry. "Please get me out of here." James rushed up to the Lord of Hell falling to knees. "I can't do this anymore. It just happens over and over again. It's absolute Hell."
"That's the bloody point, but perhaps we should we try a different memory." Lucifer picked up at man by his shirt. "Perhaps one involving a woman." The devil growled.
"What? What woman?" The man trembled, not sure what the Lord of Hell was talking about.
"Don't play dumb with me. I read the email. You destroyed a woman's life, I need to know who." Lucifer's eyes were red with anger as he shook the man violently.
"T..t..tthe email h..hhe sent me?" The man stuttered with fear.
"Yeah, that one." Lucifer growled, he slowly lowered the man to the ground.
"I t..t..t..told you, I have m...m..made a lot of mistakes in my life. I've h..hu..urt a lot of people, women." James confessed.
"You are unbelievable." Lucifer's one hand squeezed his temps, irritated with the soul in front of him. "Don't know how your parents could mourn your death. You got what you deserved. After hurting everyone that cares about you. You belong here."
"You're right." The man started to cry, the man melted to his knees, head in his hands.
"Stand up." Lucifer pulled him up roughly. "Now, before you get back to your pity party, I need you to think about which woman he could be talking about. Did anyone of you lovers have an angry father or brother that could have had a grudge?"
"I guess there was Lacey Hewitt, her brother was pretty scary. Or Anna Leeds but I heard…" The man stopped talking as he realized something.
"You heard what?" The devil was curious what the pathetic soul just realized.
"She…died." The man spoke slowly. The devil could see self-hatred all over his face.
"I'm guessing that, though you didn't pull the trigger, her demise is your fault." Lucifer piece it together. The man just nodded his head in shame. "Are you sure there is no one else it could be?"
"No. She has to be related to whoever is behind all of this." The guy pointed to the bomb strapped to his chest.
"Great. This would have been useful earlier." Lucifer rolled his eyes. "Enjoy your eternal suffering." The devil was gone in the blink of an eye.
"He is anxious to solve the case. We had a tiny set back." The scientist gave the lieutenant a shy smile. "I think we all are. Chloe was important to everyone."
"I can tell he was close with Chloe" The man stated. "What happened between them?" The new lieutenant was digging for information about the police consultant.
"I'm not really sure what happen. Chloe was fairly vague about it. He had to go home for family business and she didn't think he would ever come back. She was pretty broken up about it." Ella informed the man, leaning on the counter her eyes on the laptop screen. "I really thought they would be an item one day, but it never happened."
"Lucifer left her? Why is he suddenly back now?" Ross had a quizzical look on his face. "How does he know so much about the case?"
"I don't know. He always had this sixth sense about these things. What can I say? The guy is an enigma." Ella stood up to face her new boss who was asking very pointed questions.
"That doesn't seem suspicious to you?" The man's arms folded across his chest.
"Lucifer would never…he would never hurt her. Not like that." There was a hint a doubt in the woman's voice.
"You said it yourself, that he is anxious to solve the case. Maybe he knows more then he lets on." The man stated bluntly. Ella looked down at the counter thinking about all the weird comments from Lucifer in the last twelve hours. "Just saying, I think he is hiding something." Ross finished.
"Ms. Lopez!" Lucifer stormed into the room. "Have you found anything on an Anna Leeds?"
"Yeah, actually I have." The woman looked back at Ross who had smug look on his face. "How did you know?" She asked her friend, doubt filling her mind.
"James told me." Lucifer spoke sincerely, but he saw the look of confusion on the other's faces. "Well, I talked to him in Hell, of course. You said it yourself, it would be easier if he was alive. So, I just popped back down to talk to him."
"Hell?" The new lieutenant grew concerned about this new information. "You went to Hell?"
"Yes. Of course, I did. I am after all the Lor…" The man was interrupted.
"Lucifer, that's enough." The woman cheeks were red with embarrassment. "He is a method actor, he has been practicing this role since I've known him, I have indulged him in his little acting scenarios." The woman tried to explain the craziness coming out of her friends mouth to the lieutenant. "But we know when we have taken it too far." The woman spoke under her breath, the words pointed at Lucifer. "We are going to get back to work and follow the lead on Anna Leeds. We found her name in a journal in James' apartment." Ella lied.
"Right." Ross scoffed in disbelief as he looked between the two. "I'll let you to carry on then." He turned to leave, giving them one last glance over his shoulder.
"Dude, what was that?" Ella punched Lucifer in the arm once their boss had left the room. "You made me look bad in front of the lieutenant." The woman spoke through her teeth.
"Hey. Ow." Lucifer let out a grunt.
"The Lieutenant thinks you are suspect in the case." The woman blurted out. "Because you have some crazy insights, that no one can explain. So come clean with me. Are you involved in bombing? Tell me the truth." Ella doubtful eyes looked up at the man.
"I have always been honest with you, Ms. Lopez. You know I would never hurt the detective." The man was hurt at the accusation. "I know there are some things that are hard to explain, and I don't know if you will ever understand. But believe me when I say I will do anything to bring Chloe's assailant in so he can be properly punished."
"I do believe that." Ella eyes soften. "Just no more devil or hell talk okay? Ross is going to think we are crazy."
"I'll will try my best." Lucifer agreed. "Now, Anna Leeds."
