"Anna Leeds. Twenty-five. Found dead in her apartment six months ago of a heroin overdose." Ella read the news article aloud, while Lucifer and Ross looked over her shoulders at a picture of the woman. "According to her social media account from two years ago, she was finishing up her last year in the nursing program. Nothing much after that."
"So, this beautiful woman had everything going for her. She chooses a career to help save lives. Then along comes the scumbag, known as James, and he turns her life upside down. Ruining everything good in her life." Lucifer laughed with disgust. "A tragedy indeed. The little weasel should have left her alone. She would have better off never knowing him." Lucifer walked around the counter and sat in a chair by the door a crossed his legs.
"Any relations? Pissed off father? Angry Ex-boyfriend?" Ross asked the forensic scientist ignoring the other man's rant.
"Yeah, actually. Two older brothers. Andrew and Anthony Leeds." Ella pulled up at mans profile.
"Their parents really were on their 'A' game." The devil was proud of his little pun.
"There is not much on Anthony Leeds," Ella continued, ignoring her friends. "but Andrew was an Special Operative for the Marine Corps. Severed two years with a speciality in long-range weapons."
"So the brother was a Sniper." The lieutenant glanced over at the police consultant. "Fits our suspects MO."
"So, what, he goes across seas thinking his sister is on the right track to a successful life only to come home to find out that she's expired from chasing a high. Andy then decided to get revenge on Jimmy for ruining his sister's life." Lucifer was piecing together the most obvious theory.
"Sounds about right." The scientist agreed as she looked back and forth between the two men.
"But why shoot the detective? When he could easily shoot the James." Lucifer let out a frustrated sigh.
"That's the million-dollar question isn't it." Ross arms folded across his chest.
"Well, I have a location." The woman started. "1569 Overview Drive, apartment 615. His last…"
"Lovely." Lucifer stood up interrupted the woman before turned to the leave the lab.
"Lucifer hold up." The Lieutenant called out to the man following after him but when he looked out of the room it was like her disappeared into thin air. Ross looked back at the scientist. "That's just great, He is gone. Probably about to do something stupid."
"I'm so sorry. I probably should have given you the address." Ella looked up at him sheepishly. "I don't think he would do anything too rash." There was a hint of doubt in her voice.
"Of course not." Ross rolled his eyes. "He has clearly proven that he is of sound mind. Or am I the only one that heard that he claimed to be the devil and went to hell to get information from the dead guys." The woman was about to reply, but the lieutenant didn't give her a chance. "I need to stop him before he does something he can't take back." The man stormed out of the room.
Lucifer landed in a nearby ally, not too far from the apartment. He used to hate his winged burdened but lately they have proven to useful for quick transportation. There was a man near a dumpster that stopped rummaging for scraps when he saw the former angel pulled his wing into his back. Lucifer was the older man how was frozen in place. The devil pulled out a wad of cash and gave it to the man slowly looked down at the money and ran off without looking back.
Lucifer ran down the street to the entrance of the apartment building. He could hear the sirens in the distance, he knew the Ross was on his way.
The Lord of Hell found himself impatiently waiting for the elevator to come down. He watched the number slowly come down. He couldn't wait any long, his body was filled with adrenaline and waiting was not an option that he could comprehend at the moment. He found the stairwell and race up the flights of stairs until he reached the sixth floor.
Filled with simmering rage with a hint of excitement ready to face the man responsible for the love of his life condition. The devil found himself in front of the door of the apartment. Without a second thought, he kicked down the door. Slowly he walked in. The blinds where shut leaving the room dark. His heart beat hard against his ribcage in his chest, his hand reached over and flipped the switch. The small apartment was empty. The only signs of life were an old wooden table and a single chair to match. Lucifer quickly made his way to only bedroom. Empty. Bathroom. Empty. The cabinets. Empty. No one lived here anymore. He left.
Standing in the middle of the apartment, rage rising to a boiling, Lucifer grabbed the wooden chair and throw it against the wall on the other side of the room. The force of the throw managed to break the chair and left a large indent in the wall. Next, the man flipped over the table before he threw that across the room as well. He let out an agonized yell in frustration as he punched a hole in the wall. His hand covered his mouth while he took a moment to catch his breath.
The devil could hear multiple foot falls in the hallway and turned to see Lieutenant MacCallum standing in the doorway with a team of officers standing behind him. Ross had his gun drawn pointed at the him, before he realized that the man was all by himself in the apartment. "Andrew isn't here?" The Lieutenant slowly lowered his gun.
Lucifer let out scoff shaking his head before he pushed his way thought the doorway.
"Hey, hold up." Ross went after him. "What the hell was that?" He asked as he grab hold of the Devil's arm. Lucifer pulled himself out of the grasp at stared down at the man not saying a word. "Clearly, you can't handle your emotions. You are off this case."
"Fine by me." Lucifer replied with a sneer. "I'll find him on my own."
"If you interfere with this case, I'll…" Ross started his eyes on the broken man.
"You'll arrest me?" The taller man interrupted. "I like to see you try." Lucifer spat and walked away.
"Thank you Maze." Lucifer stepped off the elevator and went straight to the bar when he returned to the penthouse. He reached for a bottle, any bottle, and pour himself a drink. He down it instantly before he poured himself another.
"Hello brother."
"The place needs a better security system." Lucifer sighed with annoyance, but he did retrieve a second glass before he turned towards his brother who was sitting on the couch, Charlie was asleep in the car seat next him. "As I told the doctor this morning, I don't want to talk about it." He handed Amenadiel the glass and pour him a drink.
"I know. I came to thank you." The brother replied as he took a sip of the drink.
"Thank me?" The younger brother was not expecting that. "For what?" Lucifer dropped down in his favourite chair,
"For saving my son. I didn't get a chance before you left." Amenadiel look down at his sleeping son.
"I would do anything to protect that little urchin." Lucifer deflected the compliment, looking at his nephew.
"And for your sacrifice." The angel added.
"My what?" Lucifer didn't know what his brother was talking about.
"Going back to Hell. I know it wasn't an easy choice, to leave your life on earth behind. To leave Chloe to go back to a place you loathe." The brother replied. "But it just shows how much you have grown. To take responsibility. To care about humanity enough to choose them over you own happiness. I'm proud of you brother." Lucifer didn't know how to respond, it is not often he has received a compliment from anyone let alone his own family. "Then, I realized something when I saw you last night. Brother, for millions of years you have never felt unconditional love before, until she entered your life. For the first time, since I have known you, I saw a look on your face I have never seen before." Amenadiel paused for a moment looking at his brother who was looking into his empty glass. "As angels, mortality has never been something we ever had to worry about. We've never interacted with humans before. Never cared for them. Until now. I saw fear in you eyes, brother. Fear of losing the only human you have ever loved. The fear of never seeing her again."
"I am. Because if she dies, there is no way I will see her every again." Lucifer looked up at his brother, his eyes watery. "She'll be in heaven. A place, you know, I am most unwelcome and for good reason."
"You don't really believe that do you?" Amenadial asked, his brow furrowed.
"I do. I have been selfish for so long. Ruining lives for my own gain. Yes, I went back. But at what cost." Lucifer let out a sigh. "Demons came to earth because of me. Nearly a hundred lives murdered by my won demons because I didn't go back. I put everyone in harms way. I put the detective in harms way. And what worst is that she declared her love for me, Dad knows why, and I just broke her heart by leaving. I'm no better then James. I should've let you take me back years ago, she would be better off never knowing me." The devil took a large gulp of his drink.
"Luci, I..."The brother began to speak but was cut off.
"Andrew Leeds is still out there, I need to find him. Find out why he shot her. Punish him. Then I will go back home to face my own eternal punishment." Lucifer poured himself another drink. "It shouldn't be to long now. Maze is tracking him down as we speak."
"You're wrong. You don't ruin lives Lucifer." The angel sat on the edge of the couch and reached out to his brother. "You have taught me so much about humanity, I am better for it. You have help so many people while on earth. You are not responsible for the evil acts of men. You deserve love. You deserve Chloe's love." Lucifer looked up at his brother. "Forget about Andrew Leeds, Luci. The police will take care of him. Go to Chloe, she is the one that needs you now."
