Happy New Year! Thank you for being so patient. January has been a very busy one for me. Hope you enjoy!
"Sorry, I'm late, Detective." The words left Lucifer's lips with a hint of confusion upon seeing the Lieutenant standing in the doorway. "L.A. traffic is horrendous." He injected a little humor to cover his displeasure of seeing another man in Chloe's apartment.
"Lucifer!" A smile grew on Chloe's face. Her feet took off and her arms wrapped around his tall frame, with no signs of letting go any time soon. He did the best he could to return the embrace while still holding the gifts in his hands; although his eyes were laser focused on the other man. Then Chloe took a step back and noticed his untrusting glare.
Her hand cupped his face, insistent that he look down at her. But before he could glance down, her lips found his. The Devil, pleased with the warm greeting from his detective, carelessly dropped the flowers to the floor so he could wrap his free arm around her waist. His hand grazed the small of her back and pulled her in close. Slowly their lips drifted apart, and their foreheads touched. "I missed you," she whispered, her hand caressing the side of his face. Her gaze landed on his lips, resisting the urge to kiss them again. Lucifer closed his eyes, enjoying her every touch. He almost forgot about the man alone with her so late in the evening. Until that man finally spoke up.
"Not expecting company, I see." Ross said, interrupting the reunion. He was surprised to see the woman welcome Lucifer Morningstar with open arms. From what he recalled the man had left her heartbroken on more than one occasion. He was disappointed to see how willing the detective was to forgive him.
"Ross, I…" Chloe began as she turned to face her boss. She was embarrassed; she had completely forgotten that he was there. Even when she had been married to Dan, she hadn't shown any public displays of affection in front of her superiors – but that was mostly Dan's rule, not hers. And the only other relationship she'd had was with Marcus, and well, he'd been her boss. "I didn't think… I didn't know he would be here?" She fumbled over her words as she went to close the door after Lucifer stepped into the house.
"Mr. Morningstar, you are just the person I was looking for." The Lieutenant folded his arms across his chest and watched as Lucifer made his way to the nearby table and placed the cake on top. "You are a hard man to track down."
Lucifer turned on his heels to face Ross. "You were looking for me?" His hand rested on his heart in a form of mocked astonishment. "I'm flattered, truly I am." He smoothly slipped his hands into his pockets. "You are just not my type. Sorry." He glanced over to his detective, who was attempting to hide her smirk.
"Hmph. That's funny. I get it." The lieutenant spoke with an unimpressed tone that contradicted his statement. Lucifer just flashed a self-satisfied grin. Ross moved on from the jokes and to the matter at hand. "As I recall, I believe you were instructed not to leave town until the case was closed. Do you care to explain where you have been?"
"I could. But you wouldn't believe me." Lucifer flashed a cheeky smile at Ross before glancing over to Chloe, who gave him a weak smile. She knew very well that he wouldn't lie, and she wanted to lie for him, but she'd already told Ross that she didn't know where Lucifer was.
"Is that so? Well, now I'm even more interested to know where you've been," the Lieutenant scoffed at the man's useless reply. He glanced over to the detective and sensed her nervous energy, and couldn't help but wonder if she was hiding anything. He decided to let it go for a moment and focus on Mr. Morningstar. He was about to speak up when the other man beat him to it.
Lucifer let out an annoyed sigh before saying, "Detective, what is this man doing here?" There was a hint of glee in his voice, he knew very well that Ross was getting irritated and it was too easy for him to fall back into his tormenting ways. "This is not exactly the plan I had in mind for this evening. Unless he is up for a little role play. But I doubt it." Lucifer looked over at the detective, very pleased with himself, but was met with one of her famous eye rolls of disapproval. "Have I gone too far?" he asked with real concern.
"Lucifer. Stop." Chloe finally moved from her position by the door and stood between the two men. "The Lieutenant was just leaving." She glared over at her boss. "Isn't that right, Sir?" She was desperate to get the Lieutenant out of her house, so she could be alone with Lucifer.
"Oh? My apologizes, sir." Lucifer voice with filled with mock sincerity. "Do you need help finding the door? It's just over here."
"LUCIFER!" Trixie's head popped up from the other side of the couch. She had woken up upon hearing the commotion not too far from where she'd been sleeping. It took her a little while to realize what was happening until she saw the man whom she'd waited all week for. She quickly jumped from the couch and almost bulldozed Lucifer down, her arms wrapped around his waist. "See, Mom, I told you he would come over!" She hugged him joyfully.
"Of course, I couldn't miss game night. Sorry for the delay." Lucifer smiled at the child. "I'll work on my punctuality." Trixie returned the smile, followed by a goofy face.
"Game night?" The Lieutenant looked around the room, realizing that the ambiance of the room was set up for the game night. "I see. But I thought you didn't know he was coming?" he asked the Detective. Chloe pursed her lips before opening her mouth to answer when Trixie chimed in first.
The child turned around, eyeing the other man in the room, her arms folded across her chest. "What are YOU doing here?"
"Thank you, child! That's exactly what I have been trying to figure out." Lucifer's hand rested on the child's head while he gave the man a playful glare. He was quite pleased with the little urchin's interrogation, although he couldn't figure out why she was so protective of him.
"I'm trying to figure out if Mr. Morningstar is involved in the attempted murder of your mother." Ross knew after he spoke that he might have gone too far in telling the child. He could see the other man's face slowly transform into a serious simmering stare.
"What?" Trixie's arms dropped to her sides; her voice barely over a whisper.
"This is not going to end well," Chloe mumbled to herself. She could see the rage forming in behind Lucifer's eyes. "Trixie, let's go upstairs." She started to guide Trixie to the staircase.
"What's going on? Is everything okay?" Trixie was worried, as her eyes darted between Lucifer and her mom as she walked by.
"Everything is fine, child." Lucifer swiftly swiped the cake off the table and handed it to the child. "Here. Enjoy." He watched as the two made their way up the stairs before he brushed past the Lieutenant and walked into the kitchen. He opened a cupboard and helped himself to a bottle of whiskey and poured himself a drink, as if this was his own home.
"So, where were you?" Ross followed him into the kitchen.
"Keep your panties on. I just need a stiff drink after such a ridiculous accusation." Lucifer took a sip from the tumbler, then noticed the empty bottle of beer and wine glass on the counter. "I would offer, but it looks like you already had one. Drinking on the job, are we? Or was this a social call?"
"What's it to you?" Ross realized that it was hopeless trying to get a straight answer out of the man, so he decided to play along with the game.
"It's a simple question, really. What were you doing here before I showed up?" Lucifer inquired, his brow furrowed. "Trying to have sex with the Detective?" Lucifer hated how jealous he sounded.
Since he had spent most of his career reading people, he had no problem reading the man before him. Lucifer was reeking of jealousy. "Maybe," was Ross's only reply, but he did lick his dry lips to see what sort of reaction he would get. "Does that bother you?"
"Well, I don't blame you. She is a catch. I've been trying to have sex with her for years." Lucifer's jaw clenched before he emptied the remains of the drink in his glass before he poured himself another. The fresh drink was soon gone as well.
Ross was actually surprised that Morningstar and Chloe hadn't slept together after knowing each other for so long. "Chloe Decker is like a little sister to me." Ross decided to end the game. He felt a little unsettled with carrying it on. "I only came here to check on her, she had been through a lot and she needed a friend. Also, I wanted to see if she had any idea where I could find you." He was attempting to break the tension between them, hoping that Lucifer would trust him enough to tell him the truth. "I am merely trying to find out what transpired last week, and you seem to be my wild card." He could see the man before him start to relax slightly. "Where have you been?"
"Hell." Lucifer replied casually with one single word as he poured himself a third drink. Tired of standing in the kitchen, he made his way into the living area.
"Hell? You're really going with that story again?" Ross followed behind the man but stopped between the staircase and the couch to create a barrier of sorts between Chloe and the man who was clearly insane. He watched as the other man chose the far chair in the corner and crossed his left leg over the right knee. His left elbow rested on the armrest with the tumbler as an extension of his arm. Ross waited for an explanation, but Lucifer remained silent on his perch. "You don't actually think I will believe you?" he added with a nervous chuckle.
"I knew you wouldn't." Lucifer scoffed as he took a sip. "No one ever does, at least not without proof, and frankly, I think it would be too much for you to handle to see my devil face."
"Really? Devil face?" The Lieutenant let out a chuckle of disbelief. "I just think you are hiding something." Ross was getting irritated with going around in circles, no closer to his questions being answered.
"I've only been honest." Lucifer's voice was calm.
Too calm. It made Ross nervous. He had dealt with many people with eccentric personalities in his line of work, and it was the calm ones who always seemed to be more dangerous. Now, the person before him who was claiming to be Satan made him extremely nervous. Not knowing how he would react scared him. He was scared for Chloe and Trixie. He wanted the man out of their home. "All right. I think it is time we go down to the station." Ross walked around the back of the couch towards the man in the chair. His hand gripped the gun in its holster in case Lucifer tried to run. "Let's go." He motioned for the man to stand up.
"Not going to happen." Lucifer let out a single chuckle. "You see, I have waited a few hundred years for an evening with the Detective. And the offspring. I'm definitely not going to spend it at the station." He took another sip of his drink.
They both turned their head towards the staircase when they heard footsteps coming down. Chloe emerged from around the corner and stood looking at the men who were staring at her. "Is everything good?" she asked, but she knew better. She had been listening from the top of the stairs.
"This man is insane. He claims that he was in Hell. That he is the Devil." Ross took a few steps towards her. He expected a reaction but not the one she gave him.
"Yeah, I know." Her voice was calm. He eyes were on the man on the chair, who gave her a soft smile.
"You know?" the Lieutenant asked. He couldn't wrap his head around what he was hearing. He had known Chloe for a long time now. She was a woman of logic. She had never believed in the supernatural. Even as a child she hadn't believed in the Tooth Fairy or Santa. "You believe him?"
"Of course, I do." Chloe looked over at her boss. "I don't know what happened between you two when I was in the hospital. But what I do know, is that this man would do anything to keep me safe. Even go to Hell." Her eyes started to water. "So whatever suspicions you have, they are not what you think. Now, I think it's time for you to go."
"I'm not going to leave you alone with him." Ross stubbornly turned to Lucifer, who was still sipping on his drink. "Even if it is true, which it's not. He is dangerous."
"I'll be fine." Chloe hid the smirk that was itching to surface. She knew very well what Lucifer was capable of, but when he was around her, he was anything but dangerous. "Now, it is late. We will come to the precinct in the tomorrow and Lucifer will give his statement and answer all your questions, when we are all rested." Chloe started to guide the Lieutenant towards the door.
"But…" Ross glanced over to Lucifer who slowly stood up and took a few steps toward him.
"Good night, sir. We will see you in the morning." Chloe pushed him out the door and quickly locked it. Her head rested on the door then, her eyes closed, knowing very well that this was far from over. She was pulled out of her worrying thoughts when she felt his breath on her neck. She turned around to face him and looked upon his gentle eyes.
"Detective…" Lucifer's voice was barely audible. He was about to object to the promise she made to her boss about going to the precinct in the morning, but he got lost in her eyes.
"You're here." Her hand cupped his cheek, the thumb caressing his stubble. "I didn't think you would be back so soon." She bit her bottom lip.
"I had to see you." He reached out for her hands and pulled her in close.
"But what about the demons? I thought… I thought you had to keep them in line?" Chloe asked. She was attempting not to get her hopes up about him being here.
"Well, I had plenty of time to think; as you know. Though it was Maze who pointed out that I am the King of Hell. I should be able to come and go as I please. There is nothing stopping me from visiting for a couple of hours each week. You know, maybe a game night here and a date night there." He gave the woman a weak smile, unsure about how she would feel about that arrangement. "If that's what you would want."
"Talk about long distance." She let out a sigh of disappointment. "Obviously, I would want you here all the time," Chloe said softly. "I miss having my partner." She hated how, after five years of working with him, that there were only a few moments when they were actually on the same page of how they felt about each other. Now he was living in a completely different realm.
"I know." Lucifer noticed tears forming in her eyes. He fingers gently swept loose strands of hair behind her ear before he pulled her into a warm embrace. "I know. I will think of something. There has to be a way we can be together." He cradled her head that lay against his chest. "But for now…" he began, but was interrupted by her lips locking with his.
Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling herself closer to his body. His arms wrapped lovingly around her, practically lifting her off the floor as he made his way to the staircase. Their tongues intertwined. The Devil pinned her against the wall, his mouth trailing kisses down her neck. Chloe fumbled her hand around underneath his suit jacket to push it off his shoulders. Lucifer quickly finished the job by shaking it free from his arms before his hands gripped onto her neck. Chloe playfully pushed him back, before grabbing his hand and pulling him up the stairs. Lucifer stopped her on the middle landing and pinned her against the wall once more. His lips landed on hers before he picked her up, holding on to her hindquarters. Her legs wrapped around his waist. He carried her up the remaining stairs and stopped at the closed door for just a moment to turn the knob to enter her room.
"Umm, hi Mom."
Chloe froze. Her lips were on Lucifer's earlobe when she heard her daughter's voice. Lucifer put the Detective down then straightened out his shirt that had become untucked. Both of the adults' cheeks were red with embarrassment as they faced the child sitting on the bed, with a piece of chocolate cake in her hands. Chloe had been so caught up in the moment that she'd forgotten that Trixie was in her room.
"Is it too late to play a game?" Trixie smiled, knowing very well that she would have them eating out of her hand for the night.
"Yeah, sure. Yeah." Chloe looked over and saw the disappointment in Lucifer's face as he gave the child a weak smile and nodded his head.
"Great." Trixie jumped off the bed and brushed past them. "I'll go set up Monopoly."
Chloe turned to follow her daughter, but Lucifer stopped her by grabbing her wrist. "Just a quick one." He motioned his head towards the bed with a cheeky smile.
"Really?" Chloe rolled her eyes, but a smile did find its way onto her face. She appreciated the effort. She gave him a peck on the lips.
"You're right. I never do anything quickly, and once we start you won't want to stop." Lucifer let out a sigh, and then looked down. "I might need a moment." This was new territory for him; he had never been stopped right before sex.
"Yeah, I think you do." Chloe's mouth gaped open when she realized what he was looking at, and she grinned. "I'll go help Trixie." She turned around, but not before giving him a caring stroke on his arm. She of course had been displeased with the turn of events, but she would always put her daughter first before any man. Even Lucifer. She knew he understood that in his own way. She left the man leaning against the doorframe to give him a moment to compose himself before joining in with the family friendly activities.
