Hello Everyone, I just wanted to take this time to thank everyone who takes the time to read this story. I am truly grateful. There is definitely more in store! This is the longest chapter yet! Enjoy!
Lucifer, the man who always had something to say, had barely said a word since they'd started driving. There were only two times since Chloe had first known him where he'd sat in silence during their car rides. The first had been when he had been trying to solve a problem, and the second was when he found out that she was trying to send him back to Hell. Well, she wasn't trying to send him back this time around. She wanted him to stay.
This was a different kind of silence. A deep in thought or lost in another world kind of silence. His Hellish world. A world where he was the keeper of the worst of the worst, the most treacherous examples of mankind. It was a wonder how he kept up his unbridled wit and zest for life after having lived for millions of years in a place designed for torment.
"I want you to say goodbye," Chloe finally spoke up. Lucifer glanced in her direction with a quizzical look. "Whenever you have to go back, I want you to say goodbye. Don't leave or run off in the middle of the night without saying anything, even if you plan to be back by morning. I know it will be hard, but I need this. I will always be afraid that each time you have to go will be the last time I will ever see you, and I need a proper goodbye. Okay?" Chloe took her eyes off the road for a second to glance over at the passenger side for a moment.
"Of course, Detective," Lucifer replied with a soft smile. "Whatever you desire."
"Good." Chloe let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you!"
Silence filled the car once more as they came to a stop at a red light. They were only a few blocks away from the precinct, but with the mid-morning traffic it would probably take them another ten minutes. Chloe had many unanswered questions playing over and over in her mind, as she wondered what was going through Lucifer's mind. Clearly, he was thinking about something important. Something that bothered him. A problem that she probably would never hear about because he'd been reluctant to talk about it. She didn't dare to bring the subject up again, even though it was consuming her.
"Detective, you're crying!" Lucifer had looked over at the woman and noticed the glistening of tears rolling down her face. "Why are you crying?" Lucifer was concerned, his brow furrowed.
"Oh?" Unaware, Chloe's hand instantly went to her cheeks and felt the wetness upon her face. "Umm, it's nothing." She sniffled. "Probably just lack of sleep, and the couch is not the most comfortable place to sleep." She refused to look in his direction, worried that she wouldn't be able to control the floodgates, but she could feel his eyes on her. She tapped her foot on the gas pedal as the car in front of her inched forward. When the traffic stopped again, Chloe looked out her window and saw a couple walking hand in hand across the street.
"Did I do something wrong?" Lucifer asked, a sad confusion filling his voice.
"No." Chloe's reply was barely audible.
"I somehow doubt that," he scoffed to himself. "Please, tell me what I can do to alleviate this sadness."
"There's nothing you can do, Lucifer." Chloe barked as she finally looked in his direction. "Everything's been so… complicated. I just feel so helpless about everything that's been happening lately. And it's stupid, because my job is about solving problems and here you are..." Chloe paused and inhaled. "You know what. Never mind. It must be my hormones." She was hoping that bringing up the female monthly flow that it would make him uneasy, but she knew better. There were very few things that made him feel awkward.
The driver of the car behind her leaned on the horn, in a demand for her to move. She grumbled an epithet as she looked in the review mirror, only to see a senior woman at the wheel of the offending car. She inched forward the little that she could.
"I'm what?" There was a hint of sadness in Lucifer's voice. The last thing he wanted to do was to cause her any pain, but he guessed that he couldn't even avoid doing that.
"Clearly you are going through something." Chloe spoke after taking a moment to regain her composure. "I'm not an idiot, Lucifer. There is something... bad happening in Hell and I know you are trying to protect me, but…" She let out a sigh. "But not knowing and not being able to help is so much worse."
"Oh?"
"But it's fine. I'll get over it." There was finally steady movement in the traffic again.
"Chloe, I…" Lucifer began but Chloe cranked up the music in the car to drown him out.
"Please." He pushed the off button on the radio. "I'm sor…" She turned on the music again and gave him a warning glare. At last, he conceded as he sunk down into his seat and stared out his window.
Chloe sped forward, weaving in and out of the traffic. She wanted to reach their destination quickly so she could get out of the car. She hated that she wanted some space away from him right now. They had been parted for so long that it didn't seem fair for her to feel this way. Within minutes, they were parked outside the entrance of the precinct instead of their usual parking spot in the garage.
Lucifer looked over at her in confusion for a moment before he realized that she was dropping him off. He slowly unbuckled his seatbelt and held on to the door handle. Turning back to her, he hesitantly turned down the music once more. She didn't retaliate.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "Do we say goodbye now," he let out a heavy sigh, "or will you come back here?" He didn't want to leave her this way.
"I'm going to park. I just a need a few minutes alone…" She stared at her hands that were wrapped tightly around the steering wheel.
"Oh? All right." Lucifer opened the door and stepped out. The moment he'd closed the door, the detective drove off. He watched as she turned into the precinct parking lot.
Lucifer hesitantly made his way into the precinct. His heart was heavy; he hated that he was responsible for the Detective's current state of frustration. He wanted to tell her, but it scared him. He didn't want to bother her with his troubles that were not of this world. He'd thought that it wouldn't be fair for her, but not saying anything seemed to have made things worse.
"Mr. Morningstar. I was afraid that you wouldn't show up." Lucifer was halfway down the stairs when he heard his name called. At the bottom was the man who had painted an awful picture of him in the precinct, making him look bad in the place he'd worked as a consultant for the last five years. Putting a strain on his relationships with those whom he'd worked with and grown fond of. He could feel all eyes on him for a brief moment before they busied themselves with their work.
"No faith in me? Good," Lucifer mocked with a menacing smile.
"None. I was debating if I should've put a GPS collar on you, so I could keep track of you." Ross scanned the man from head to toe, noting that he was wearing the same suit as the night before.
"Really?" Lucifer flashed a smile. "That sounds like a bit of kinky foreplay. Does it zap when I disobey? Or when I leave Los Angeles?"
"If I had it my way, yes." Ross winced after he realized what he'd said, which had given the man more fuel for his sexual innuendo comebacks. Of course, that's not what he'd meant. He braced for a smartass comment that never happened, and was surprised that the man before him wasn't paying attention, but was deep in thought.
"What now?" Lucifer blinked slowly as his attention was pulled back to the room. He hadn't heard the Lieutenant's retort.
"Are you all right, Mr. Morningstar?" Ross asked, oddly concerned for his suspect. He wondered if the man really was mentally deranged.
"Of course, you just gave me a brilliant idea." Lucifer gave him a genuine grin. "Thank you! Shall we?"
"After you." The Lieutenant motioned towards the interrogation room. "Espinoza, are you coming?" Ross called out as they passed his desk. Dan stood up and followed.
"Daniel, really?" Lucifer questioned, but he was pleased with having a somewhat of an ally in the room with him. Even if they had their differences. The men all turned around when they heard the cheers that erupted in the bullpen.
Lucifer was filled with pride when he saw his lovely Detective descending the stairs. A smile appeared on her face as her colleagues gave her a warm welcome back after being absent for the past week. Their eyes met for a brief moment, before Ross roughly guided him into the interview room.
"O. M. G., Chloe, I didn't know you were coming back today!" Ella came running and propelled herself into Chloe to give one of her famous hugs, almost knocking her over. "I thought you weren't coming back until next week."
"Yeah…" Chloe peeled herself off of the forensic scientist. "I'm not working today. I'm just here to support Lucifer." She glanced over to the closed interview room door, with the three men she cared about on the other side.
"Oh, yeah. I heard that Ross was investigating him after what happened at the hospital." Ella let out a sympathetic sigh as Chloe glanced at her in confusion. "Now that Andrew Leeds is refusing to speak. Or write. Since you know he can't speak because, you know, his jaw is wired shut." The scientist rambled on. "Lucifer is just a really passionate guy, I don't think he meant to harm the guy. Right?"
"What exactly happened?" Chloe asked. She had heard many times about Lucifer's alleged misconduct in the hospital, but she wasn't clear on exactly what he had done. She was getting tired of everyone sheltering her from what was really happening. First, being kept in the dark about what happened while she was fighting for her life, and now Lucifer with his… hellish secrets.
"You don't know?" Ella was surprised. "He bashed that guy's face in. Broke his jaw. It put a hold on the whole investigation."
"Oh. Well…" Chloe let out a long sigh. She wasn't too surprised, because the man tended to lose his temper when it came to her. "Yeah, he…" She cleared her throat as she attempted to defend him. "He was probably seeing red or something. He didn't mean it."
"Yeah. Yeah. Of course." Ella's agreement wasn't totally convincing. "I should get back to work. It was good seeing you."
"Mr. Morningstar." Ross was sitting across the table from the Devil. In the seat that Lucifer so often would sit in when he helped the Detective with the questioning. "Where were you on the night of September twentieth?"
"I was in Hell," Lucifer stated plainly.
"Right?" Ross let out a frustrated sigh as he looked over at Dan to see his reaction. He caught the end of an eye roll.
"What were you doing… there?" Ross reluctantly asked, playing along with the man's delusion, hoping that he would reveal some indication of where he really had been.
"I was conducting my daily punishment on the damned souls from the Dark Ages." Lucifer crossed his leg over his knee, his hands interlocking over his knee. It was easy to act as if this were a normal, everyday occurrence, which it was for him. "Height of the Inquisition. Their tolerance for pain is astonishing. It takes a little more effort to make them scream."
"I see." The Lieutenant was getting slightly irritated, but after last night he had promised himself that he would remain calm, cool, and collected. "Do you have an alibi?"
"Well, only about six hundred thousand demons and fifty billion souls. Give or take a few hundred." A cheeky smile crept across his face.
Daniel finally spoke up. "Come on, man," he snapped, banging his fist on the table. "This is serious."
"Easy, Espinoza." Ross held up one hand to his second in command to calm him down.
"Of course, it is, Daniel. Very serious," Lucifer agreed. "This line of questioning is a complete waste of time." He raised his voice. "Not to mention, the ridiculous accusation that I had any connection with the horrendous explosion that almost ended the life of the only human I care about." He pushed against the table, using it as leverage as he stood up. "The man responsible is already in custody, so what is the point of this?"
"Mr. Morningstar, please sit down." The Lieutenant kept his voice calm, but his heart was jumping in his chest. The man's outburst had made him uneasy. He folded his hands on the table. "Right now, I just want to get your side of the story. Then we will go from there. No need to get excited."
"Fine." Lucifer took a breath as he sat down. "Hurry up with it. I have places to be. Demons to punish." His legs crossed once more.
"Right." Ross caught himself rolling his eyes, and decided to ignore Lucifer's comment for the time being. "How did you know there was a sniper that night if you were in Hell?"
"James Colbert's Hell loop. Apparently, the young bomber felt especially guilty about that night. Though his other wrongdoings are… well, the delinquent had some serious issues. But in his Hell loop, I saw the sniper in the window."
"Uh, hmm." Ross looked down at his files on the table, debating whether or not he should call the psychiatric ward to get this guy committed. He was unquestionably not of sound mind.
Lucifer casually clapped his hands together. "Right. You don't believe me. Well, how about some other details about that night." He watched Ross impatiently stroke his eyebrows, then continued. "I spent some time in that scene to observe the surroundings. I'm the Devil after all, so I have the ability to freeze and replay anyone's Hell loop." He felt the need to explain his extent of his powers, even though he knew the men would never believe him without proof.
He added, "Daniel, you were wearing your black leather jacket." He glanced over at Dan, who was holding his head in his hands in shock. "The one that Chloe gave you for your fifth anniversary. It has a slight tear in the right cuff from your unpleasant encounter with Malcolm a few years ago. I'm very impressed that you escaped after the beatdown he gave you." Dan stared him with a baffled look on his face. "You, Danny Boy, were standing beside Mazikeen in front of the barricade."
Then Lucifer turned to the Lieutenant. "Ross, you on the other hand, stood in the back with your microphone in hand." He couldn't hold back a snarl of disapproval.
"That doesn't prove anything," Ross scoffed. "Chloe could have told you all that."
"Yeah, it took me while to find you, but there you stood in the back behind everyone, like a coward. While the woman you claimed to be, what did you say, like a sister, put herself in danger. You didn't try to stop her or help her. You stood there like an idiot." Lucifer deep voice simmered through his clenched jaw. "You froze. Everyone looked to you for answers and you just froze. Chloe took charge that day, tried to talk Jimmy down, but you did nothing. How you ever made Lieutenant I will never know."
Silence filled the air like a thick fog. Lucifer's cold glare was directed at the man in front of him, his Devil eyes flashing red for a split second. He could see the man shrink, his confidence leaving him. Wondering if what he'd seen was real or just a figment of his imagination after all the Hell and Devil talk. Lucifer had hit a nerve.
"I just have one burning question," Lucifer concluded, breaking the tension. "What do you desire?"
"To…" The man appeared to sink into a trance-like state. "To expose you for who you really are."
"Really? That's it?" Lucifer was disappointed with that answer. "Well, I can easily do that. Daniel, if you don't mind waiting…" Lucifer was interrupted when the door swung open.
"Sir." An officer barged in. "It's the prison's infirmary on the line. Something to do with Andrew Leeds."
"What?" all three men said at the same time.
"What about him?" Ross asked as he stood up.
"I don't know. They won't tell me," the officer said. "They want to speak with you."
"Right. I'll…" The Lieutenant hesitated, for a moment feeling like he was the one being interrogated. "I'll be right back." He left the room.
"Lucifer…" Dan began, with a hint of nervousness in his voice. He opened his mouth but quickly closed it.
"Out with it, Daniel," Lucifer sighed, annoyed with the gaping look on Dan's face.
"How did you…" He licked his dry lips. "How did you know what happened with Malcolm?"
"I was bored one day, so I paid him a visit." Lucifer uncrossed his legs and leaned forward, causing Dan to shrink back in his chair to put some distance between them. "The man was starving for attention, so he would tell me anything I asked him. You see in his Hell we…"
"You deprive him, of everything." Dan spoke knowingly, remembering when Malcolm had told him about Hell. "You are… You are really the Devil."
"Yes, Daniel." Lucifer smiled, satisfied that at least someone believed him without having to show his face for once.
"But if you're the Devil, how did you heal her?" Dan stood up, his voice shaking.
"I'm also still an angel, Daniel. Much to my dismay." Lucifer watched the man slowly walk backwards towards the door. But before he could reach the door, it burst open and Ross flew back in.
"Espinoza, what's wrong with you?" he snapped, already seething with frustration, which ramped up from seeing his detective backed against the wall. Dan's eyes lingered upon Lucifer for another few seconds before he ran out of the room.
"What did you do to him?" Ross leaned on the table, hovering above Lucifer.
"Daniel has been enlightened by the truth." Lucifer gave a malicious smile. "Soon, you will be too. Now, where were we?"
"It's all true." Dan ran up to Chloe, who was sitting at her desk looking over the pile of paperwork that had accumulated. "He is the Devil," he blurted. "He is really is the Devil, Chloe." He yanked her out of her chair, his body quaking in fear.
"He showed you?" Chloe was surprised.
"Showed me what? What do you know?" Dan stepped away from her.
"Dan, keep it down." She pulled him toward the empty nook that was under the stairs, away from listening ears. "I know he is the Devil. He didn't show you his face?"
"What? No." Dan attempted to whisper despite his trembling voice. "He knew things. Things I haven't told anyone."
"Oh. That's all?" Despite herself, Chloe was rather disappointed, and wondered what would happen to her ex-husband if he actually saw Lucifer's real face. Her eyes glanced over to the interrogation room, and she watched as Lucifer casually walked out. "Look, Dan, he is a good man. You know him. He is the same annoying guy you have known for five years."
"Well…" Dan took a deep breath. "He did save you… but it's a lot to…" His body shivered and he was unable to finish his sentence, as he watched the Devil walk towards them.
"Lucifer, is everything okay?" Chloe asked her partner as she looked past his shoulder. Ross hadn't emerged from the room. "What did you do?"
"I showed him," the Devil said casually. "Time was ticking and I couldn't wait any longer, so I sped up the process. Now the Lieutenant is a believer, just like Daniel." He motioned toward the man who had sunk down into the closest chair. "I hope you aren't displeased by THIS decision?" he asked pointedly, hoping that he hadn't put himself further into the doghouse with her.
"No. I'm… No." Chloe closed her eyes, flustered. "I…"
In a gentler voice he said, "Look, Chloe, I realize that you are frustrated with my lack of disclosure of what is transpiring in Hell." He took her hand in his. "I won't deny that it's bad. Really bad, but I think I have a solution. Thanks to the Lieutenant."
"Oh." Chloe looked down at their entwined hands.
"I should go back now; I just wanted to make sure that we are okay." With his free hand, Lucifer tilted her chin up, for her eyes to meet his own.
"Lucifer…" She took a big gulp of air. "Do what you need to do, so you can come back." She managed a smile, giving him a nod of approval.
"Thank you for understanding." He pulled her into a brief but passionate kiss. "I love you." Then he hurried away and ascended the stairs.
"Be safe," she called out. He turned for a brief moment and gave a warm smile before he disappeared around the corner.
After Lucifer was gone, Chloe quickly made her way to the interview room and opened the door. Ross was frozen in his chair, his eyes locked on the chair opposite him where she guessed Lucifer had been sitting.
"Great." she mumbled to herself.
