July 2nd 1994, 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, England
Sirius Black, one of the most feared men in wizarding Britain was stood at the front door of number 4 Privet Drive. The night covered him so that the only thing that could be seen was his grey eyes. Despite him being obscured by darkness it was still clear that he was wrestling his emotions into place. He was unsure of what to do and how to do it, but he did know one thing. Harry Potter wouldn't sleep another night at Privet Drive.
All he wanted to do was storm in and get revenge on the Dursley's, but if he did then it would alert Dumbledore to what happened, who would almost certainly know that Sirius would hide at Grimauld Place. The other option was to let the Dursley's off and to sneak Harry away, not drawing any notice to himself. Whilst the second option was clearly better the teenager in him couldn't help but wanting to go in with his wand sparking.
There were a lot of rumours circulating around Harry, but there was always one common theme. He hated the muggles he lived with. And that was enough for Sirius to know they were horrible people. Harry had forgiven Sirius within minutes when he realized that it wasn't him who had betrayed his parents and soon after Harry was doing anything he could to protect Sirius.
It wasn't only that, the way that he had agreed almost instantly to live with a man who he had never met before. A man who nearly every wizard knew and nearly every wizard hated. Sirius was terrified that the Dursley's mistreated Harry, and that he wasn't welcome in their home. But one thing was for certain, the Dursley's must have been horrible if not even Harry had it in him to forgive them.
Sirius eased at the thought of his godson. Harry had outperformed what most grown wizards could have done that night. He had somehow saved him from under the nose of the ministry on a Hippogriff that was meant to be dead. It was no wonder that the ministry hadn't talked about the events at Hogwarts, they had been completely humiliated. The man they had spent weeks trying to catch had been caught, only to disappear without a trace.
And from the rumours Sirius heard that day wasn't the only time Harry had performed heroics, he overheard stories from students whilst he was lurking around the Hogwarts ground, he just didn't know which stories to believe. He had heard the lot, ranging from being kidnaped by a Professor Quirrell only to be saved by Dumbledore, to trying to stop Snape stealing something contained within Hogwarts. There was only one way to find out the truth and that was to ask Harry himself.
Sirius took a deep breath, he needed to focus, he couldn't let anything go wrong. If he messed up the Harry was doomed to spend the rest of the summer trapped with the Dursley's. With a flick of his wand, he silently cast to silencing charms at his feet, so that he wouldn't be heard creeping around the house. He then silently unlocked the door to the house, and it swung open. Allowing Sirius to walk in.
As soon as Sirius stepped inside the house his fears were confirmed. Harry clearly wasn't welcome at Number 4 Privet Drive. All throughout the hallway there was pictures of an Obese boy, who Sirius assumed must be the Dursley's son. Then there were family pictures as well, but none of them included Harry.
The door to the cupboard under the stairs was left hanging open, and inside of it there was still a pillow form where Harry used to sleep. Sirius had heard rumours that Harry had once slept in a cupboard, clearly that wasn't the case anymore atleast. Sirius slowly walked up the stairs, it occurred to him that not only were the Dursley's awful people, but they targeted there hate at Harry. It was as if the whole household was designed to show that Harry was not like the rest of them, that Harry was weird and different.
In some sick way the Dursley's reminded Sirius of his own family, there strong dislike for wizards was so like his Families hate of anyone not pure-blooded. At their core they both thought they were better than other groups of people, when they were both some of the worst type of people.
Once Sirius was at the top of the stairs, he could see that all the doors were open upstairs, his breath was sucked out of his lungs when he saw Harry. Harry was passed out on the floor, his glasses knocked askew. There were still tears falling down his face and Buckbeak's feather was still clutched in his hand. The clothes he was wearing were clearly too big for him, probably hand-me downs from his cousin Sirius thought and his body was shaking, despite the fact it wasn't cold in the room.
Sirius took a quick glance around the room, the walls in his room were different to the sickly peach that violated the walls in the rest of the house, it was a subtle way of showing that Harry was different. But not only that, there was a cat flap on his door, the only door in the house to have it. Sirius couldn't bear to think about the Dursley's horrific reasons behind putting it there.
The sight of his godson being so destroyed hurt Sirius so much. It was like someone had used a cutting curse on his heart. It looked as if a fire had been lit withing his eyes, his muscles began to twitch as he had to try and stop himself from throwing blasting curses at the wall and blowing it apart. All he wanted was to get revenge on the Dursley's and show them just how horrible they were. He wanted to put them in Harry's position just to show them how hard it was.
He managed to contain his emotions and lightly grabbed Harry's arm before flicking his wand. Harry Potter and Sirius Black disappeared from Privet Drive with a loud crack that woke up the Dursley family.
July 2nd 1994, Headmasters Office, Hogwarts
The headmaster's office was a large and beautiful circular room. The walls were covered with portraits of old headmasters and headmistresses, all of whom were snoozing gently in their frames. There was also an enormous, claw-footed desk, and, sitting on a shelf behind it, a shabby and tainted sorting hat. In one corner of the room there was a shelf filled with all kinds of silver instruments, which on that night were working on overdrive. Nobody knew what those instruments did aside the headmaster, and he refused to tell anyone.
The headmaster was sat at his desk staring intently at the instruments, waiting for them to produce results. He knew that somebody had broken into Privet Drive, and he had a pretty good idea of who it was as well. Dumbledore firmly believed that Sirius had gone against him and taken Harry from the custody of the Dursley's.
Dumbledore let out a loud sigh, there was no way that Sirius understood just how crucial it was that Harry stayed the summer at Privet Drive. Whilst how he had warded Privet Drive was technically illegal, there was nothing anyone could do about it, no-one knew about the protections around the house, which was why he was unable to explain to Sirius why it was critical that Harry stay the whole summer.
But these protections were necessary to keep Harry safe, Dumbledore was certain that without them then death eaters would have killed Harry in revenge for what he did to Voldemort, and if it wasn't the Death Eaters then he could have been swarmed by all the other Witches and Wizards who would want to benefit from the Boy Who Lived's fame. The wards made sure that Harry was kept away from the wizarding world.
It was a very complicated piece of magic that Dumbledore was very proud of, he knew that Lilly had found a way to put some kind of blood protection on Harry, whilst he wasn't sure exactly what the protection would do he had managed to attach that protection to the wards, normally wards like that would break within a year or two, so to make sure they didn't he had used blood wards, for a drop of Harry's blood the wards were connected to his magic which meant that whenever he was near Privet Drive the wards were renewed.
Eventually one of the instruments at the edge of the room spit out a piece of paper, and it flew over to Dumbledores desk. He gave a small smile, that instrument would list who had cast what spells around the premises that day, it was one of many instruments measuring the on goings of 4 Privet Drive. The piece of paper read:
Magic cast at Number 4 Privet Drive
Sirius Black:
Unlocking charm
Silencing charm
apparition.
It confirmed nothing that Dumbledore didn't know already, but it did mean one thing. Tomorrow he was taking a trip to Number 12 Grimauld Place. Harry needed to return to Privet Drive, and if his visit didn't work then he would have to take things to the ministry.
A/N Future chapter should be a lot longer than this, I've spent alot more time planning parts of the story than writing recently, but please review! It's the bset thing you can do to support a writer.
