A/N: Before this chapter I'd like to say that lots of people thought that Tonks was stupid for how she acted at the end of the last chapter, however I completely disagree. She has only just gotten onto the auror force and is acting on something that everyone else has accepted, she has no reason to suspect that Sirius Black is innocent, with the imperius curse and other pieces of magic, even Harry pointing a wand at her doesn't suggest much.
July 3rd 1994, 12 Grimauld Place, London
Sirius said, "I'm afraid the dementors are going to have to book an appointment to see me, I'm rather busy if you can't tell."
Tonks realized that Sirius wasn't going to just hand over Harry Potter, although that was obvious to her from the outset. Her eyes were darting between the 3 wizards, as if trying to weigh up who to cast at first. As they were stood in the entrance hall there was no cover to hide behind, the only object in the room was a coat hanger in the corner and the only escape route was back out the door, she knew that if she was to leave now then she couldn't get back in.
She made a split-second decision and with a wave of her wand a flock of birds surrounded her. As soon as she had cast the spell red stunners began flying over at her. She heard Potter shout, "Expeliarmus" However the spell flew straight over her head. The birds were providing a limited amount of cover despite them limiting her vision. But they were falling. Fast. The flock of 15 or so was thinning, as stunners hit them, falling to the ground, and turning to dust as the magic wore off.
She had to change up her strategy and quickly, they were going to wipe out the flock of birds in the next few seconds. Tonks pointed her wand at the coat hanger muttering, "Murum Lapideum", the coat hanger was transfigured into a large stone wall, which provided temporary cover as it blocked the hallway. She could here Black call out, "Harry, get out of the spell fire, go upstairs now!" She assumed that Potter was under confoundus charm, or maybe even the imperius curse. But she didn't have time to think, cracks were already appearing in the stone wall as the two remaining wizards cast small explosions at it.
As the stone wall crumbled in front of her, she could see more red spell fire come through at her. Tonks was running out of options now. She tried one final risk and made all the chunks of stone float in front of her, some were getting destroyed by the spell fire, but she began to throw the smaller chunks at the wizards, keeping the larger ones back to block spell fire. She threw rock after rock, but none of them were hitting as Sirius and Remus were covering each other, using the knockback jinx and other spells to keep the stones from hitting them.
It wasn't long until spells began flying through the stones and coming close to hitting her. They had started to vary there spells now and she could only recognize some of them. There were various stunners and disarming spells, however eventually one spell hit her, binding her up in ropes, seconds later a disarming spell hit her, and her wand flew out of her hand, cancelling the spell she was using to levitate the rocks as they all hit the floor.
Tonks was shaking, partly from the remaining adrenaline of the duel, partly because she was now certain she was about to die. Being wandless and bound in front of a known mass murderer was never going to be a good thing, yet she was still alive. Perhaps there was a hope that she would be held hostage hear, and she would be able to escape or the rest of the aurors stationed here would find a way in. Until then she would have to find a way to stay alive.
She snapped at the two wizards, "Detaining me means nothing, tomorrow the Wizengamot will hold a meeting and the minister is going to get permission to blast down the wards around this place. You'll have no where to run Black."
Sirius smirked, "I've had nowhere to run for the past year, I think I will cope." Tonks went silent. In that moment Sirius decided that 12 Grimauld Place was not a safe place to stay until his name was clear, when they went to the meeting of Cyrus' alliance, he was going to leave the wards down and abandon the house.
July 3rd 1994, Albania:
Peter's mission was supposed to be incredibly simple; he was to go and find out as much information about what was happening in Britain as possible. However, that was proving rather difficult. The closest town to the forest his master had been hiding in was still a few miles away. It had tired him just getting there in the first place, and when he arrived, he realized that the town was disconnected from most of the wizarding world. There was a local newspaper that provided no insight into global events and the few members of the public he'd tried to get information out of only seemed interested in discussing local gossip.
He was now curled up shivering in his rat form underneath a windowsill of the local pub. About to give up and fail his first mission he turned to scurry away from the village. But then he was hit by a stroke of luck. A shorter plump walked out of the pub, clearly very drunk as she struggled to walk straight. She was blabbering about leaving the town and how her holiday had been a thorough disappointment. Peter turned and looked at the witch, it took him a few seconds, but he recognised the witch, it was bertha Jorkins a Fellow Gryffindor who was a few years ahead of the marauders. Peter recalled that she had a job in the ministry, so he desperately hoped that she would have some valuable information.
She started to walk out of the village, the limited number of residents out for the day were steering clear of her so Peter decided to follow. It took them a few minutes to walk outside the boundary and out of view, but as soon as Peter was certain nobody was close, he transformed back into his human form, his wand in his hand. Pointing it at his old house mate he called out, "Hello Bertha."
The stout witch jumped and turned around, as she fumbled around her clothes for her wand. However, she looked up and froze, looking Peter straight in the eyes. She shook her head and muttered, "I've had far too much to drink, I'm seeing things."
Peter cackled, "you're not seeing things Bertha, we're going to go on a little trip together." He pointed his wand at her and muttered, "Imperio" Bertha's body went slack, a small smile appearing on her face as she lost control over her body. It put a bit of strain on peter to maintain the imperius on her as she tried to fight it off, but after a few moments he started leading her back to the Dark Lord.
July 3rd 1994, Greengrass Manor, Nottingham
Harry and Remus had both arrived at Greengrass Manor, having repaired the debris from the earlier fight, standing at the door was Cyrus, who was now looking very professional, wearing a high-quality set of robes with his hair tamed, with Daphne standing next to him. He was smiling brightly and eagerly welcomed the pair back, "Welcome, Welcome, I have a feeling that this meeting will be one of the most interesting in years."
Daphne smirked, "It doesn't take much for it to be the most interesting to be fair."
Cyrus brushed off the comment, "Come now Daphne, one day you may be leading these meetings after all."
Harry added, "They can't be that boring anyway, right?"
Daphne shrugged her shoulders, "There not that bad to be honest, it's all very useful tactical information." Cyrus smiled down at his daughter, "Although nothing seems to be boring around you Harry."
Harry laughed, "I'll try my best to make it interesting then."
Cyrus still smiling said. "Harry, I have already informed the whole alliance that you have not been kidnapped as the prophet reports, however many will have questions for you, but I will try to prevent you from having to answer too much, is that all good?" Harry nodded his head, "In which case, Daphne you take Harry into the dining room. Me and Remus will stay here and greet our guests as they arrive."
Daphne led Harry into the room, where there was a large table with around 15 to 20 seats spread around it, hanging above the middle of the table was a large crystal chandelier and in front of each seat was a plaque with a name on it, and a piece of paper which appeared to list the agenda for that meeting. At the head of the table the three names listed Lord Greengrass, Lord Abbot, and Lord Fenwick, who harry assumed were the leaders of the alliance, as he kept looking around, he recognised lots of the other names, such as Boot and Corner.
Daphne said, "Father likes having everything organised and professional for the meetings, he expands the table to fit everybody, normally the dining room is an absolute mess from mother experimenting with food."
Harry gazed at the room with a smile on his face, "I think it looks incredible."
Daphne smiled at Harry, "Father would be glad to hear that, he wanted to leave a good impression on you."
Harry questioned, "Why? He's already left a very good impression."
Daphne shrugged her shoulders, "I think he wants to have you and Sirius Black join the alliance one day. Although I'm hoping the good impressions aren't just from my father."
Harry laughed, "I guess you're not that bad either." The two smiled for each other for a second and Harry shook his head, "We're meant to hate each other you know."
Daphne raised her eyebrows, "You're not going to start listening to rules and expectation now are you, Harry?"
Harry laughed and shook his head, "Of course not, but I'm curious, why are you so friendly to me?"
Daphne replied, "Lots of reasons, you're a powerful potential ally and I'd be stupid to turn that down. Your one of the biggest mysteries in Hogwarts and by getting to know you I get to find answers to things must of the student population will only be able to speculate." She turned and looked him in the eyes, "And you're an incredibly nice and funny person."
Harry fought the blush of his cheeks at the compliment, "Would you still consider being friends with me even if I wasn't famous or powerful?"
Daphne smiled, "Yeah, you're not escaping being friends with me yet Harry."
Harry laughed at their situation, "We must be the first Slytherin and Gryffindor to be friendly in years."
Daphne shook her head, "I'm sure many a Slytherin and Gryffindor's have been friends in secret, they just chose not to make it public."
Harry agreed, "That's true, I wouldn't blame my house-mates for making friends with Slytherins either, clearly there not all that bad."
Daphne said, "Don't let all Slytherins not being idiots stop your rivalry with Malfoy though, it provides lots of entertainment for all of us."
Harry laughed, "It's not my fault to be fair, he provokes all of it."
Daphne replied, "Trust me I know, imagine having him in your house, I'm far too familiar with Draco."
Harry faked an overdramatic shiver at the thought of being in Malfoy's house, "Malfoy is most of the reason I'm happy to not be a Slytherin."
Daphne replied, "Most? What's the other part then?"
Harry answered with a smile on his face, "Snape, the man has an agenda against me."
Daphne laughed, "I wouldn't have thought it'd be possible for Snape to hate a Gryffindor more than he already does, but I think he reserves a bit of his envy every day just for you."
Harry shrugged, "It sure feels like it, potions would actually be interesting without him."
Daphne looked at him, "Atleast it isn't that bad for me, he never goes against people in his own house!"
Their conversation about Hogwarts life was put to a stop as two people walked into the dining room, the one on the left was a tall dark-haired man, his grey eyes swept over the two teenagers as if analysing them. The man on the right was shorter, with short blond hair and black glasses, unlike his companion he had a wide smile on his house, and a spring in his step. It was clear he was very excited for everything which was about to unfold.
Daphne prodded him and whispered into his ear, "The one on the left is Lord Fenwick and the other man is Lord Abbott." Harry nodded his head in response, he recognised that it was their names at the top of the table, so were probably some of the leaders within the alliance.
They walked over to Daphne and Harry, Lord Fenwick had a small smile on his face as he looked at Harry, he stuck out his hand and they shook hands. Harry said to him, "It's good to meet you, Lord Fenwick." He let go of Harry's hand, turned his head to Daphne and smiled, saying, "You didn't need to introduce me yourself Daphne, I'm sure Lord Potter could have figured out who I am himself."
Daphne smiled back and said, "I'm sure he could of, but better safe than sorry." The man just nodded his head in return and turned to walk over to the other end of the table and take his seat. Lord Abbott to shook Harry's hand and said, "Lord Potter, it's a pleasure to see you in person and all the better to see you are safe."
Harry returned, "It's nice to meet you as well, but please call me Harry." He turned to look at Lord Fenwick and said, "The same goes for you as well Lord Fenwick." He curtly nodded his head and said, "In which case call me Abraham." Lord Abbott followed up with the same, "And you can call me Michael"
The next few minutes were filled with various members of the alliance entering the dining room and introducing themselves to Harry, many who harry recognised as relatives of those he knew within Hogwarts, others he recognised from outside of Hogwarts such as Mr Olivander who recalled his and Daphne's wands to perfection.
After a few more minutes the final few members drifted in, including Augusta Longbottom, who after meeting Harry was very glad, they had chosen not to go to for help. She seemed awfully stubborn and set on her views.
Once everyone had arrived Cyrus and Remus walked into the room, Cyrus adjusting the cuffs on his robes as he walked. Remus came over to Harry and Daphne when they sat on the opposite end of the table to the alliance leaders, with Harry in the middle.
Cyrus stood at the head of the table, smiling at everyone he said, "Well, welcome everyone to the alliance meeting. I'm sure it has escaped nobody's notice that Harry has joined us today, along with Remus Lupin, his friend and ex defence against the dark arts teacher." There were small nods of acknowledgement around the room before Cyrus continued, "Now today I'm afraid we have something very serious to discuss before the Wizengamot session tomorrow." Everyone around the table looked attentively at Cyrus, it was clear he was very well respected. Hoopy the house elf had apparated into the room and placed the same pensive at the head of the table.
Cyrus continued, "I have a memory in the pensive from Harry, that I would very much like everyone to see. As the pensive will not be able to have all of us in at once we'll come in groups."
From the right side of the table a man who Harry recalled was named Mark Turpin asked, "Why can't Harry tell us the events the memory show himself."
Remus jumped in, "Because you won't believe It without the memory." The members of the alliance looked rather shocked at the claim and the excitement around the room increased.
Cyrus said, "As the pensive will not allow all of us to view the memory at the same time, however I will enter with every group." Cyrus indicated to the men sat next to him, "Abraham, Michael if you would join me first." At that the 3 wizards stuck their head into the silvery liquid one at a time.
Harry sat back and prepared to watch the reactions of everyone in the room. The memory lasted a few minutes so low-level discussions were going on around the room. Not noticing anything useful Harry turned to Daphne and asked, "What will they think?"
Daphne thought for a few seconds and answered, "They'll probably be more annoyed at themselves than anything else, both Lord Abbott and Lord Fenwick were on the Wizengamot when Sirius was arrested, they'll think that they should have done something."
Harry replied, "So you think they'll believe it."
Daphne shrugged her shoulders, "They've got no reason not to believe it, it's more a case of whether they'll chose to believe it.
It was a few minutes later that the three men re-emerged from the silverly liquid, both Michael and Abraham looking much paler than they did entering it. Cyrus spoke again saying, "You'll have to excuse me from limiting discussion until everyone has watched the memory. Can those on my right come up next."
It took around 10 minutes for everyone in the room to see the memory, but as soon as the last group came out of the pensive loud conversation burst around the room, it took Cyrus a bang out of the end of his wand to get everyone to be quiet.
He said, "Please everyone, I know what we've just witnessed is shocking, but can we please keep a bit of order. There is a lot to discuss, but it's useless if we don't have a proper conversation about it."
Augusts Longbottom was the first to speak again, "I assume that Remus Lupin can confirm that the memory is true?"
Remus said, "I can, Sirius Black is innocent. I didn't think so before that night but is undeniably true to me now. "
There were a few murmurs around the table and then Olivander said, "In which case we have an innocent man who the ministry is trying to arrest."
Michael Abbot added, "Not just arrest, they have ordered him to be kissed by the Dementor's."
Abraham quietly added, "And then have accused him of kidnapping the boy-who-lived" Indicating to Harry he added, "which is evidently false."
A woman who Harry couldn't remember the name off asked, "But how would he not have a trial?" She turned to Harry's direction, "And did he still take you from you relatives Harry?
Cyrus however interrupted the flow of queries., "I believe that there is a man who can answer some of our questions for us. But before that I must ask is there anyone here who believes Sirius Black to be guilty."
Everyone looked around the room, expecting one person to say they didn't believe. But no one did. Harry was delighted to see that everybody had chosen to believe them, it would make the next bit so much easier.
Cyrus smiled, "Good, in which case I have a guest I would like you all to meet." Harry smiled as he knew what was coming. Sirius Black walked through the door to the dining room, he confidently walked over to Harry, putting his hands on Harry's shoulders. Cyrus nodded at him and said, "The floor is yours, Lord Black."
Sirius nodded back and said, "I understand everything shown today may be an overwhelming amount of information that upends what you've considered fact for over 10 years, but I need your help." The whole room was in silence, looking on at Sirius, although whether that was out of fear of the murderer or respect for the man wasn't clear.
Sirius continued, "Recently I took my godson here, "he patted Harry's shoulder, "from the custody of his muggle relatives. And I use the term custody rather than care deliberately. We were hiding out at my old family home in London and woke up yesterday to find aurors outside the door. We believe that in the Wizengamot session tomorrow the Minister of Magic will attempt to get permission to tear down the wards, it would mean a lot to me if you can overturn this decision, or even find a way to get me a trial."
Sirius could sense the reluctance of some of the members of the alliance in the room, it would be incredibly difficult to push such a thing through the Wizengamot. It was hard enough to get standard things passed if some of the Purebloods tried to block it, trying to argue against a something that has been accepted to be true. Sirius quickly tried to convince them saying, "If it works me and Harry would be in your debt, I'm sure you all understand the significance of having two lords of ancestral houses in your debt."
Abraham Fenwick was the first to speak after Sirius' speech, "I'm sure you understand the difficulty behind your request Lord Black, a difficulty that could be eased a little if Harry took his seat on the Wizengamot for tomorrow's meeting. Harry, can we count on your votes in our favour?"
Harry looked up at Sirius silently asking him whether he could. Sirius sighed and asked Lord Fenwick, "If Harry returns to me safely after the meeting, I would be happy for him to go."
Cyrus waited for someone to ask another question of Sirius, but nobody bit. So, he said, "In which case we should begin planning for getting Lord Black a trial."
With that the next hour was spent discussing various tactics to get Sirius a trial.
A/N This chapter took far too long to write, it has been the chapter I've found the hardest to write as well. I hope you enjoy, everything should get a lot more interesting from here, especially with the Wizengamot session now coming up.
As always please review, it motivates me to write!
