Grant came with us when Ranger drove me to the school. They helped me into my wheelchair and pushed me into the office. As we entered, the three girls jumped up, joy on their faces, and rushed over to me.
I leaned over and gave them tight hugs and big, smacking kisses, and the girls all smiled in joy. "What are your classes like?" I said. "Have you made any friends yet?"
"Not yet", said Alix. "Gracie and I got in the class, but we wanted to give you a healing hug and a kiss and we couldn't, and then we worried that you would die without our healing hugs and kisses."
"You gave me so many healing hugs and kisses over the last few days that I have already started on the road to getting better. Grant checked my legs when I woke up, and he said they were this much sick a few days ago", I said while holding my hands open as wide as I could reach, "but with your help I am only this sick now", I said as I held my hands open only twenty percent of the previous width. "It's kind of like a ball. If you push it, even when you aren't pushing it, it moves forward just because of that initial push. You have all done so many healing hugs and kisses that you have pushed my healing, and even though you can't give me healing hugs and kisses when you are at school, you have already started the healing process and when you get home you can give it another push."
The twins looked like they believed me, but Tia turned to Grant. "Is that true, Grant? Is Mommy getting better?"
"Tia, you know that I am your mom's doctor, right?" She nodded. "You know that I would never lie to you, right?" She nodded again. "It is my prediction that the infection will be completely gone by tomorrow night, and that in another three days she won't have to take that horrible medication that makes her feel so sick. I have also noticed that the pain in her legs is less than it was, and it is now more like it was when we were in Scotland rather than how it was a few days ago. That means that she won't have to take such strong painkillers. Right now, I am still giving them to her because they make her sleep and that is more comfortable for her when she feels so sick to her stomach. However, her pain is better controlled and she is well on the way to being better."
The three little girls looked at Grant seriously. "Promise?" said Alix.
Grant smiled. "I promise. Those healing hugs that you gave your mom over the last few days made a difference and, to tell you the truth, I have never seen someone heal as fast as your mother in all my years of being a doctor."
Alix stood beside my wheelchair and leaned against my arm. I adjusted and wrapped my arm around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug. I laid my cheek on the top of her head and felt the softness of her hair and kissed her on her crown. "Guys", I said softly, "I'm going to be okay. I might be in a wheelchair longer than I want to be, but that isn't a big deal. We have an elevator up to our apartment and our apartment is only one floor. I may need to sleep more than I want, but that also isn't a huge problem. I like sleeping, and how often do I get an excuse to have an afternoon nap every single day? And once I lose this nausea, I will be feeling a lot better and able to eat all the things you make me in the kitchen. To tell you the truth, the nausea is more bothersome than the pain in my legs now."
The girls all gave me hugs and kisses.
"Did Daddy or Grant dress you this morning?" said Tia.
"Daddy. He did a good job, didn't he?"
She smiled. "You look pretty, Mommy. I wasn't sure if Grant selected your clothes. They aren't black."
I laughed hard as Ranger made a face.
"Of course", she continued, "gray is kind of like a light black."
I laughed even harder, and Grant cracked up at the same time. Tia looked proud of herself as Ranger growled and held her upside down, and lifted her so that her face was at his level. "Watch it, missy", he said. She laughed hard, and he kissed her on her nose. "Love you." He then flipped her and gently placed her on her feet.
Alix smiled and looked at her father. "I'm wearing black shorts, Daddy", she said.
"That's my girl", he said. She smiled again.
"You know what I notice that you are all wearing? Just like me, you are wearing your courage ribbons. That means that Colin is in Heaven, cheering us on and telling us that we are going to be okay. He is now our guardian angel, and he is looking after us."
"Why are you wearing your courage ribbon?" said Grace.
I smiled. "I thought that I could get courage from my ribbon and send it your way, and then you'd have double the courage."
The three girls smiled.
I kissed them all again. "Gosh, I've liked seeing you, but I should let you get back to class. You don't want to miss anything good, and I want you to tell me all about it when you get home tonight."
"Mommy?" said Alix. "Don't forget to kiss our hands."
"I hadn't forgotten." I looked at the three of them. "Did you all select your own clothes for today? You all look very pretty. Your hair is lovely and your clothes go so well together."
"We did it ourselves", said Grace with pride.
"I could tell that Daddy didn't help you. You are wearing colors, to start off with."
The girls laughed.
I lifted each of their hands and kissed their palms. When I finished, I said, "my turn. Would you mind kissing my palm and then, when I need a little boost, I can touch my palm to my cheek and get healing kisses from all three of you?"
The girls grinned in pride, and each kissed my hand.
I smiled at them. "It's like you told Daddy when he had to go down to Costa Rica to save Hannah. You are all always in my heart, and I carry you with me wherever I go."
Grace gave me another kiss. "You're in our hearts as well, Mommy."
"What about me?" said Ranger with a smile.
The girls all gave him a hug. "Yup. You're in our hearts as well", said Tia.
"What about me?" said Grant with a grin.
Alix and Tia looked like they were thinking about it, but Grace immediately gave Grant a hug. "We love you too, Grant", said Grace. Grant laughed.
