After recovering from his phone call Legend decided that it was probably time for him to make his way down to this gallery to help Ravio with his paintings…apparently the show tonight was going to be an especially big deal. He let his instincts guide him to a small decorative dish by the front door from which he procured a set of keys with a pink plastic and faux fur 'lucky rabbit foot' keychain and from there outside to a strange but sleek, low-set vehicle in the brightest cherry red he'd ever seen. It gleamed in the early morning light, and he felt a sudden swell of masculine pride in his chest at the sight of it.
"Well….Hello there…" He cooed at the machine as he lovingly ran a hand over its caramel-colored canvas roof before stooping and climbing inside. With a turn of the keys and the press of a button the roof of the vehicle…The 'car'… HIS car… slid back, allowing the sun to warm him once again. The little red sports car purred beneath him, and he let out a quiet whoop of joy at the feeling. He turned on the radio and backed down the drive with an apparently practiced hand. Somewhere inside of him, this all felt so natural... he was just letting that part take the reins. He sped down the road, blaring Tom Petty and feeling the wind in his hair.
Glorious.
Once he arrived at the Gallery he was pleased to see that he had his own parking space right in front. He pulled right into it and got out, still high off of the exhilarating ride, and savored the little chirp from his car as he locked her.
"Oh, don't worry! I'll be back for you…" He purred as he patted her hood in a small farewell and strode into the elegant polished double doors of the Gallery. The cool air conditioning hit him immediately and he reveled in the slight chill.
"There he is!" Ravio's high clear voice rang out in joy as he strode across the polished marble floor and wrapped Legend in a big bear hug. The man wore a purple and gold pinstriped blazer, gold chain necklace, blue tee-shirt, and black skinny-fit trousers over a pair of ostentatious red snakeskin boots. He lifted the hero off his feet in a twirl and set him down. "The man, the myth…the Legend!"
"Hello, Link." A cool feminine voice came from behind him, and he turned to see none other than Hilda, Princess of Lorule (or…was she?) in a sharp white suit dress with flame-red pointed heels. She came up and shook his hand once Ravio set him down. "It's good to see you. The new works are absolutely phenomenal..."
Legend opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted.
"Oh! Thank goodness!" A smaller blonde man in a black turtleneck and multi-color stitched wool beret pushed his way through to stand in front of Legend. His shoulder-length hair swung as he made a wide gesture at the room before them. "I need your help. The flow here is all wrong with these ones and the lighting in the back section is a Mess! We only have a few hours before-"
"SMITHY!" Legend practically shouted as he ran up to the smaller man and gave him a fierce hug.
"Off! Off! OFF!" The indignant man tried to squeeze out of Legend's grasp. "What is With you? Put me down!"
Legend did as he was asked and stepped back feeling a little foolish. "I…uh… Sorry." He mumbled
"Hmph." Four gruffed as he fixed his beret. "…Anyways, as I was saying. We need to move the bigger pieces to-
Ravio clapped the man hard on the shoulder. "What shorty here is trying to say is; Thanks for coming to help with the setup." He beamed at Legend, and four nodded as he peeled Ravio's hand from his shoulder with a grimace.
"Yes.. That. Especially the 'dual castle' one. No matter how I light it either the one above looks too dark or the Other castle in its reflection does. It's a vexing piece. I honestly don't know how you created that effect." He made a face up at legend.
"It is.." Said Hilda slowly. "But I have to say, that it's my favorite of the set. There's something about it… It feels like, coming home somehow. You know? That feeling you get?"
"Agreed," Said Ravio "If Mayor Zelda hadn't bought the whole lot, I'd have taken it off your hands."
Legend followed the trio through the gallery as they talked. He glimpses of memories from his past hanging from the walls; Monsters that he'd faced, places he'd been.. Hyrule, Lorule… Labryna, Holodrum.. Subrosia, The Temple of Seasons, Koholint.. dungeon after dungeon so many places that he knew… and then there were his friends. Almost always at a distance; their faces always out of focus or obscured; He had captured moments of action, moments of joy, great battles and brotherhood. He wanted to stop and look at each one, but their group walked along at a brisk pace, and he stumbled to keep up. There must've been close to a hundred paintings here!
"Here it is.." Said Four with equal measures of pride and derision. The one to defy traditional lighting techniques." He made a dramatic gesture up at the wall and Legend's breath caught as he set eyes upon it.
The painting was of Hyrule Castle, with a vibrant setting sun in the background, In the foreground was a mighty lake and in its perfect still, reflection was not Hyrule Castle but that of the Kingdom of Lorule, its own sky much darker but with the hint of a dawn's promise far on the horizon. Standing resolute on the shore of that lake was a gangly teen, again with their back to the viewer (though Legend knew that it was himself.) The painting was truly a work of art. He was surprised and pleased with himself for being able to convey such raw emotion, hope, and loss through oils and a simple canvas.
"See what I mean?" Four continued, not registering his cousin's reaction to seeing his own work. The spare man sighed heavily. "What do you recommend?"
A feeling pulled in Legend's gut and his lips moved before his brain registered that he had planned to speak'
"The boy…Focus the light on him."
"What?" Ravio said incredulously. "But…why?"
"Just…try it." Legend said firmly, now with more conviction.
Four shrugged but complied. The light his the figure by the lake, catching a shimmer of golden paint on the boy's hand. The faintest glimmer of a triple triangle shone there and somehow as if through magic the rest of the painting seemed to even out. Light seemed to disperse through all four corners of the canvas and the trio beside Legend gasped in awe.
"That is… Wha-….. I want to know how you did that." Four smirked up at him. Ravio and Hilda heartily agreed.
"Pure artistic Magic…" A sultry voice purred from behind them and the foursome turned around to meet it.
Din stood there, leaning against a marble pillar in elegant gold and crimson saree, that draped fetchingly against her full figure. She smiled at Legend as she stood to her full height and stepped forward. The pleasant tinkle of her resplendent glittering jewelry followed her through the room to the rhythm of her steps. She came to stand beside him and rested a warm hand upon his shoulder. You've done well, as always, my old friend. And as usual, I can offer little but my thanks…"
"Psh…and that sweet sweet commissioning check!" Ravio teased. "You should take the family on that vacation you've been planning!"
Din nodded, "Of Couse, but I meant more than just monetary compensation. You have saved our gallery with this project of yours. It has brought The Gallery into a spotlight unlike any we've had before. We are flourishing and selling like never before…and it's all thanks to you." She smiled and playfully shoulder-checked him. "Thank you."
Legend could only smile up at her and nod. "O-of course... You know I'd do anything for you.."
"I do." She said, and her smile turned a little sad. She squeezed his shoulder, firm and warm. "You've always been like that. But I wonder if you ever save any of that magic for yourself…"
He looked up at her, into her depthless eyes, and felt something tug in his gut. A memory (a dream?) from long ago. It was like she knew of his struggles. Like she could somehow remember too…
"This time… I think I did." He smiled up at her and squeezed her hand in turn, the affection of all their long years of friendship plain on his face. "I have all that I need and more."
She leaned over and kissed his forehead in a gentle, chaste kiss. "Please…take care of yourself, my friend... I have something I must see to tonight, but I wish you the very best with your show. Know that my thoughts and hopes go with you."
She stood again and turned to walk away. The rest of the team had been happily chatting and had missed their exchange but did notice her leaving and called out their farewells as they worked to move a particularly large piece of a hero mid-battle with a multi-headed dragon-esque stone turtle.
Just then the little bell at the front door of the gallery rang and a pair of footsteps could be heard echoing as the patrons stepped inside. Ravio turned his head to tell their guests to welcome but he wasn't afforded the chance.
"Well. Well. Well!" Came Wind's voice from the echoing in the grand marble space as he approached the group in the back of the gallery. Four groaned and palmed his face at the interruption. "Look who it is, Wild Card! Could it be our favorite uncle in the whole world?" He elbowed his companion playfully and they gave a curt nod to Four "Oh. And the other one is here too. Hi Smith.."
The sailor sauntered in with Wild beside him. Both men were dressed in the polished uniforms of their respective branches of military service. Wind was looking quite classically dashing in his Navy dress blue "Cracker Jacks". Wild sported the crisp grand accouterments of a Marine officer, with his gold buttons gleaming and a fresh "jarhead" haircut, he looked sharp and poised. Both men smiled as they walked in.
"Ooh.. No." Four said raising his arms in front of him in an 'X' shape as he stomped towards the newly arrived duo. "Out! I will not let the two of you ruin this! I've worked too hard and if you lay a greasy finger on a SINGLE painting I swear to the Gods of the arts I will string you up by your toenails, bleed you out, and make my next masterpiece with-" Wind patted the smaller man on the head and gave him a fond smile. "Good to see you too Unc." Four seemed to deflate at the gentle touch and took a moment to compose himself before the tiniest of smiles bloomed through onto his scowling face before he could replace it with his previously sour countenance. He sighed heavily in a dramatic fashion.
"Don't call me that." The smaller man grumbled up at the sailor. His head whipped around as if triggered by a 6th sense to where Wild was standing, reaching up to brush fingertips with a delicate golden statue of some goddess. "and don't TOUCH ANYTHING! DO you not remember last time?"
Wild started and backed away, putting his hands behind his back looking for all the world like a guilty child. "Sorry.." He mumbled, and Four squinted at him, unable to tell if he actually meant it.
"Hey.." piped in Legend, who had witnessed this whole exchange. "I have to go pick up my son from practice anyways… lets give these guys some room, huh?"
Wind and Wild Agreed with enthusiasm and trotted off towards the door. Four gave his cousin a grateful nod and scurried off to help Ravio and Hilda once again.
Notes:
I wanted to give Din a very sultry flair as that is how she has always been in my mind, and while they are close I tried hard to make surer that the relationship between her and Legend is one of an almost familiar one.. that kind of long-lasting 'finish each other's sentences' kind of friendship, rather than a 'partner'-type of intimacy. I hope I did that justice, if not please let me know? I can rewrite that bit. it's important.
