"And~ Done!" Kyoko cheered as she finished inspecting the final paper, her cheery voice betraying the expressionless visage that is her mask.
"Yes. As always, thank you for your hard work, Kyoko-sama." Albedo bowed, her expression reflecting her gratefulness.
"I'll happily accept the praise~." The Great Spirit replied before tilting her neck, thus beginning her procedural cooldown after an entire day behind the desk.
Furthering the gesture she promptly stood up and began moving, starting with a series of simple movements to ease her joints before moving on to stretching to complete the activity.
Of course, it holds no merits except for psychological ones. Seeing as her specter body should no longer be able to feel any form of muscular pain. She was doing this out of pure habits, and no one around dares to question her due to her position. Though for the other players, it was just plain old fear of the woman.
"But still, to think that one person would have to deal with this much paperwork every single day," Kyoko spoke again while reaching for her toes. "I have to pay my respect for whoever it is in charge before I took over."
And she meant that from the bottom of her heart, more so because she only understands what she was reading half of the time.
In-game, their concern consists mainly of maintaining security and anticipating an enemy attack. Thus, the management of Nazarick consists mainly of surveillance of their immediate areas alongside strategizing for said occurrences. The latter being made up of prepping disposable NPC to serve as mobs and setting up a myriad of traps while the former being exactly as it sounds.
But with their transportation and the NPC's newfound consciousness, the process had naturally turned complicated not to mention elaborate.
Beginning with the enhanced needs for resources such as food and water. While Nazarick possesses a degree of self-sustenance, enchantment is a must for future expansion or the likes. The fact that it must be accomplished in a covert fashion making the task even more difficult.
Not to mention new issues and problems in regards to security. From an increased requirement of intel regarding their surrounding, keeping their activity clandestine from neighboring kingdoms, and most importantly, coping with the loss of revenue needed to maintain their previous state of affairs.
Because they aren't inside a game anymore, and they can't make money simply by killing monsters left and right.
Their loss of primary income serves as the most serious blow up to date. And the group has ever since tried to incorporate making profit into their venture while trying to come up with an alternative method of defense.
Of course, right now that is none of her concern.
"On the contrary Kyoko-sama! I'm sure your supervision alone is enough to increase our efficiency! If you were to personally perform the running of Nazarick's internal management then surely…."
"No-no! I don't want to intrude on anyone's domains'! I'm sure that they are the best at what they do!"
Kyoko hastily interrupts before Albedo can go any further. Fearful at the thought of having to perform duties she was unqualified for.
After all, the big secret is that she can't do half the things the NPC assumes she can easily perform. And just like always the Guardian Overseer somehow managed to twist her words in the most uncanny way possible.
"Oh! I see! Even if you can most definitely perform our task better, you allow us to retain our responsibilities in the hopes of inciting self-growth. Truly you are as kind as you are mighty!"
"...Yeah, sure. Let's go with that."
Whether it is good or bad, Kyoko's ability to roll with the punches was top notch. Any other players would have felt guilt or at least flinched suspiciously, but the great spirit was unflappable in dealing with the NPC's overzealousness.
She was the best fit for the task of babysitting Nazarick while everyone else is away. No matter how much she hates to admit it.
"Anyway~ now that we're done here we should probably get lunch now. As lonely it is with only two people…"
Normally the intermission before having nothing else to do for the rest of the day should entice excitement, but it was clear that this occasion was different than it's usually is. Today, Nazarick is almost empty after all.
Momonga and Fuitchi had begun his first mission as an adventurer, and to avoid suspicion opted to minimize contact with Nazarick. Torihiki is also doing the same in a different setting, posing as a noble to begin their construction of an information network with Laufeyson tagging along.
There's the 'problem' with Solution Epsilon, but his brother in law had promised not to do anything funny. Ranmaru and Itsuki are still working on their map, most likely continuing until the evening at the very least or maybe even the next day depending on the latter's whims, meaning that the completion might even be pushed back further thanks to her dedication.
Cranium, while is ever-present due to the nature of his education, is currently under a period of seclusion. His ongoing training regiment with Cocytus cutting him off from the rest of Nazarick in a self-proclaimed warrior education.
Lastly, is Minerva's absence which correlates with her father's own. She is currently focusing on setting up the foundation for Carne village's betterment, the objective serving as her first independent long-term project. Since Momonga will vacate the scene in a couple of days she decides to finish laying the groundwork before then to avoid occupying the same premise at the same time.
Usually, it will go the other way around, but considering how cute Minerva is it's better not to take unnecessary risk. He might not be as open as Kyoko about it, but he just as enthusiastic when it comes to admiring their daughter's adorable antics.
So here she is, left alone for the first time in a while. The Great Spirit is exaggerating of course, and she's all for an earnest attempt at a hands-on project coming from their initiative.
It doesn't change the fact that she's feeling lonely at the moment.
"I understand your peril, Kyoko-sama, I do!"
Albedo half-shouted, again wearing her heart on her sleeve and letting out her previously hidden frustration.
"For starters, why should Minerva-sama ever bother devoting any of her time for those useless humans! It would be more suitable to dedicate those precious seconds into accustoming her for queenship, or better yet, to have her share the moment with her family…"
The Guardian was going to drone on for another hour or two, and not wanting to have her lunch postponed Kyoko cut in before she can go any further.
"...While I understand your last suggestion, the first one kind of implies that my husband is going to die soon don't you think?"
It was more of a witty remark imbued with dark humor from her part, one that she would spew naturally thanks to her skewed perception of a joke. And again, the NPC took her jabs way too seriously.
The color drained from Albedo's face. It was such a guilty look as if the guardian overseer had blurted out loud that she had murdered someone. Though, judging from her earlier words, she would have no qualms if that was the case.
In the blink of an eye, she hastily bowed down. Knees, elbows, and forehead all kissing the ground in a show of utmost regret plus self-depreciation.
However, the sheer speed of the motion turned the gesture into an offensive maneuver, a crater appearing on the spot where her forehead connected to the marbled floor followed by a loud boom and a rising cloud of debris to boot.
"PLEASE FORGIVE ME KYOKO-SAMA!" Albedo shouted so loudly that she was sure half of Nazarick would have heard her.
"I WOULD NEVER DARE TO IMPLY SUCH A THING! BUT IT IS CLEAR THAT THIS ONE HAS RAN HER MOUTH TO AN UNFORGIVABLE DEGREE!"
While it's true that some people might find the implication offensive, Kyoko was not such an individual. If anything, she'd be bothered more by how her display of shame resulted in her office being damaged. As mentioned earlier, they need money, and fixing any damage to any section of Nazarick requires one.
So Albedo's action, even if it is a well-meaning one in her opinion, is inherently counter-productive.
'Of course, I can't tell her that.' Kyoko inwardly mused, knowing that it might push her further in a negative way.
The main problem here is how the NPC takes their word too literally, and would sometimes even warp it to fit their narrative. She'd like to mention a particular example, but it's too graphic and violent that even in her spirit form she'd rather skip on much of the details.
Long story short, she ranted a bit about how the sunlight scripture ruined a tender moment between her and her husband, even if she did play it off cool she was annoyed as any woman would be, and let's just say that their still-living member would much rather be dead.
Since that was the result of a mere tirade, lord knows what will happen to someone she openly dislikes should any of the guardians get their hands on them.
It only gets worse from there, as a quick consensus they performed early on reveals how the NPC of Nazarick would gladly and wholeheartedly administer extreme prejudice on one of their own should they ever dare of thinking to go against the Supreme Beings, except for Eclair for a humorous reason.
Hence, even the slightest of their ire is capable of sentencing anyone to a fate worse than death. Member of Nazarick or not.
"PLEASE-PLEASE! END THIS MISERABLE LIVE WHO HAS SINNED AND DREAMED OF YOUR DEMISE!"
That is if they didn't take their own lives first.
At this point, Kyoko wanted nothing but to facepalm and let out the longest sigh she can muster, but she knows that Albedo might misinterpret said move in the most negative and self-destructive way possible. She knows because she was speaking from experience.
Thankfully, she also knows the best way to stop it.
"Raise your head, Guardian overseer Albedo. That is an order."
As if she was a mechanical doll instead of a living creature, Albedo heeds the call. Magically would be the best way to describe it, as those words erase the array of emotions coming from the guardian with forthwith.
Now, she was in a proper kneeling position, expressionless, and awaiting orders just like in the game. This was the last resort. A reboot button of the sort that allowed them to rein in their subordinate no matter what. An absolute set of words capable of making the NPC do whatever they want them to do.
"You are to raise your head. As for this so-called offense of yours, I've forgiven it."
Her stoic facade crumbled against the unexpected ordainment, the Guardian Overseer looking up with apparent puzzlement.
"But! Kyoko-sama!"
"No buts! It was only a joke! A joke! And from my part no less! It's not like I'll ever take offense to something as trivial as an implication, I'm not that shallow of a person you know!"
Elsewhere Momonga felt as if his wife had just voiced out a blatant lie, but was unable to do anything due to not being there.
Back at the tomb, a tired sigh finally escaped the great spirit's phantasmal mouth.
"So again that's your order! Raise your head and accept my forgiveness! Of course, I won't accept no for an answer!"
Kyoko was a bit worried that the order would run counter to the NPC's guilt and would result in a terrible paradox or something. But the fact that Albedo slowly stood up, even if reluctantly, quells her worry.
Even so, there's no telling if things will ever go as smoothly as this time in the future. Kyoko knows she cannot rely too much on this method, and that it'll be both better and saver to build an understanding between her and every NPC individually.
Which, considering their state of mind and loose definition of sanity will take a long long time.
No one ever says that doing the right thing is easy. So she'll simply focus on what's right in front of her right now, literally speaking.
"So it's settled then? You're not going to ask me to kill you or try and kill yourself?"
The now standing Albedo meekly nodded traces of tears visible on both corners of her eyes.
"Of course not, Kyoko-sama. To think that I had once again underestimated the boundary of your kindness. Truly, this one could only gratefully grovel in the face of your boundless mercy."
Yep, sorting this whole godhood thing will be the hardest thing she has to do yet.
She knows that doing so straightforwardly will be unlikely to yield any result, and has no choice but to proceed in the slowest pace possible to avoid any mishaps. And getting used to this kind of setting was likely a must.
Still, there was something peculiar about this outburst of hers. That is the eruption of another feeling accompanying the guilt as well as the determination to make up for it.
"Well, now that it's come to this I want to ask you something."
"Of course. This one will try her best to meet your expectation even if our wisdom does not compare to yours."
Kyoko would normally argue that it's always the opposite, at least when it comes to knowledge. But her gut tells her that her question will not be answered so straightforwardly.
"Just remember, I don't expect a quick or precise response or anything. This is a question that is problematic in every way, so we expect you to come forward with an answer of your own."
Albedo obediently nodded, and after breathing in with her non-existent lungs and mouth, the question left the great spirit's transient lips.
"Why were you afraid?"
Immediately, and as expected, the Guardian Overseer tensed.
Over her years as section chief of a first-class white company the greatest challenge, in her opinion, was assisting someone in partitioning their work and private life as well as navigating through the issues coming from both.
Forcing someone to fully abandon the latter under the pretext of professionalism was plain stupid. But going in too deep into someone's personal affairs is the worst thing a superior can do.
Thus keeping the firm balance was her secret in succeeding in life. One that grows easier with her husband's apparent talent in getting along with virtually anyone.
And now, she once again was met by such a familiar sight against all odds.
"...I…"
"There's no need to rush. We've got time."
The assurance meant the world for the crestfallen guardian. It took another couple of moments before she seems
"...It's just that… I have spoken something unforgivable…"
"Yes, you proclaimed to have committed a vice of some sort. Why don't we start with that?"
Folding her arms, the Great Spirit then sat down on one of the corners of her table. The scene a perfect re-enactment of past occurrences in the previous world.
"The death of me and my husband, does the idea scare you that much-?"
"IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN KYOKO-SAMA!" Albedo abruptly interrupted, sounding even more distraught than the first time.
"We Guardians made your security to be our topmost priority! And even if any of us fall there's no way anyone would ever be able to defeat you with Momonga-sama by your side-!?"
With a raise of her palm, Kyoko ended the guardian's articulation. The star-struck Overseer realizing her rudeness and hastily lowered her head.
"Well, that certainly proves it, and don't worry about cutting me mid-sentence. I appreciate your worry, and I'm sure my husband will too if he was here. Also, I of all people know the best of my abilities. Or have you forgotten just what I am capable of?"
She might be a part of Ainz Ooal Gown, but that doesn't mean that her capability is tied extremely to her membership.
Far from it, her long period of 'going undercover' proves her skills and proficiency as a fighter, the Player Kyoko being one of the International Middle-Upper echelons ranks' occupants.
And with her husband in the mix? It'll be much faster to say who in the world they can't beat. And even then, they'll still have a chance.
"That said, it's obvious that this certain topic held more significance for all of you…"
The switch from comforting warmness to uncompromising seriousness rattled even Albedo, and she cannot remember when was the last time her mistress adopted such a visage.
As if the fate of their entire guild depends on it.
"Hence I wish to ask you another question, and again, I don't expect a detailed or curt reply of any kind. I just want your honest personal opinion…"
At this point, Albedo was shivering under her skin. Her greatest and hidden fear being dragged out into the open by her mistress no less. Yet, she was determined to follow through and face them. Empowered by her faith in the very same person in front of her.
"...Everyone else, The other Supreme Beings… You believe that they're dead-. No, do you think that they have passed on?"
"..."
The silence she receives was more than enough to serve as an answer.
"...I see… We seem to be on the same page then…"
But that was a lie. Though whether or not Albedo was aware of such escaped both Kyoko's care and notice.
This was, after all, a topic that everyone wishes to avoid. Players and NPCs alike.
For the latter, this was something of a sad reminder. Of how their very creators must have passed away. There are no other explanations for their absence after all. And anyone with enough intelligence will surely arrive at that conclusion.
But for them, for the players who are well aware of the 'truth' behind the matter. It was the complete opposite.
The matter was nothing short of a landmine, one capable of tearing them apart from the inside out should it be brought up on the wrong moment.
Because the truth was not as kind, the truth was that everyone else had abandoned them.
Of course, that narrative on its own was twisted. After all, had the players knows beforehand of what would happen right during the shutdown, surely a large number would decisively leave the old world behind in favor of YGGDRASIL, delusion or not.
Nevertheless, differences in perspective ended up occurring either way. They mostly kept it to themselves but all of them possess a distinct plus personal take on the matter. One that is unlikely to ever change no matter what.
Despite that, however, everyone agreed that the fact of the matter was best to be buried forever. And leave it to the NPCs to privately conjure the best veracity for their own sake.
Kyoko doesn't know what's heavier. Keeping the truth buried from their friends' children or to bottle her feeling on the matter to avoid discordance.
Just as she didn't know that she was grasping her forearm a tad too tightly. Something that Albedo took notice of first.
"K-Kyoko-sama…"
"Ah!" the Great spirit cried out as her psyche returned to reality. "Sorry about that Albedo! Guess I kind of wandered off back there."
"Please don't say such a thing! If anything it is my fault in bringing up the topic and allowing your old wound to resurface. We might have lost our creator… but what you, our lords, lost are eternal companions who can never be replaced..."
Again, Kyoko thanked her lack of facial features. Otherwise, her face would have morphed into a displeased expression in a heartbeat.
Among those who hold contempt for their guildmates, Kyoko was the most open in portraying them as people who abandoned everything they had built. The sentiment intensifying once the NPC began to showcase their independence and sense of self.
Details aside, for her they are unforgivable for leaving behind their children to the unknown. Even if her final judgment was greatly affected by bias as well as the removal of logical factors, that is how she truly felt regarding the matter.
Having to refer to the very same people as friends, even if it is indeed for the best. Had it not been for her race's passive skill the rage would have been more than enough to sent her on a rampage a dozen times over.
"...Friends… I guess once upon a time we were like that…"
But she was an adult through and through. And gritting through the anger for the greater good was a part of life.
So she will do just that and then brag to her husband about it at the end of the day.
That thought which began as a simple passing musing quickly spread.
Oh, she can already imagine it. The dumbfounded expression and the slacked jaw that couldn't be hidden even by his Overlord persona. Of how she did exactly the opposite of what he expected her to do. That is acting like a sensible person despite his absence.
Kyoko is already having trouble keeping her laughter in just picturing that. And the words that will come out of his mouth would be:
'I don't need to worry. When push comes to shove, you surprisingly know to act your age.'
It struck her so silently and quietly, but its effect was the exact opposite.
He wasn't even here, but those words, the one she knows he will undoubtedly respond to her boast with and smoothly fluster her in one move.
It was a sweet reminder that she wasn't alone. And as cliche, as it sounds, it was more than enough to snap her out of the imperceptible darkness she almost threw herself into.
As if the distance between them were non-existent… Perhaps that's how it had been and always will be.
But the final blow came not from Momonga and instead...
"…I know that none of my words will ever be able to describe it but… I do hope that we will be able to at least resemble them one day and stand by your side."
It was Albedo, the girl right in front of her and the same girl she had just tried to comfort. She was the one who delivered the final words of kindness that Kyoko oh so much needed.
"Haha~ Is that so?"
"Kyoko-sama?"
This time, it was the guardian's turn to be puzzled. It was obvious that her lord's mood had taken a turn for the better. Problem is, Albedo couldn't exactly remember what it is that she said to warrant such a positive effect.
'Think carefully Albedo! If I can remember what pleases her so much then maybe I can use it to cheer up Minerva-sama as well!'
As she was preoccupied with replaying the previous minutes, Albedo failed to notice that her master had abandoned her position and is advancing towards her.
With a quick motion, the Great Spirit wrapped her arm around the Guardian Overseer, the latter taken completely by shock mixing with happiness.
"K-Kyoko-sama! W-what are you…!?"
"Shush~ Just let me have this for a while…"
That seems to do the work as Albedo ceased her struggle, and even goes along with the act by positioning her arm in a way that it won't get in the hug's way.
What Kyoko didn't know is that Albedo was acting almost purely out of physical reflexes. Her psyche barely holding up due to the sheer thunderbolt of glee she must cope with.
"You know, for a moment I forgot that I'm not alone. Thank you for reminding me that it's not like that, Albedo."
Thus, she was finally sent into cloud nine. Her consciousness barely latching on to her physical being due to the stimulus that is her mistress' joy.
'No, wait! If I don't respond quickly it'll ruin the moment and make things awkward!' She realized.
What is it that she can do!? To make sure that the atmosphere won't be ruined, and if possible make this go on for as long as possible?
Putting her intellect as the guardian overseer to its maximum output, Albedo racked her brain to come up with a response that will ensure just that. And after running hundreds of detailed and precise scenarios,
'Then! Please take as long as you like!'
She inwardly roared a victorious 'Yosha!', fully intending to voice her hard-earned answer and extend the moment to its utmost-
"Ah~ recharge complete~! Thank you for lending your shoulder for an old lady like me Albedo."
"..."
Indecisiveness is the enemy of success and victory, something within our grasp can easily vanish with even the slightest of it. For some reason, those words from Cocytus rang aloud inside her head.
"No, as always it is our pleasure to be of any use for the Supreme Beings, Kyoko-sama."
So Albedo said with her usual charming smile. Kyoko could have sworn, however, that she sounded a bit hollow for some mysterious reason.
"Well that's that, I guess. At any rate, let's just keep this problem shelved and stop worrying about it for a while. At least until everyone else comes back. This is not something that only two people can solve…"
"It is as you say Kyoko-sama. I'm afraid that even with all of the Guardians' prowess combined, a final concrete answer would still not be found."
"...Not that there is one in the first place."
This was a deadly paradoxical problem that needs to be solved individually as much as it needs to be resolved together. Once again referring to the clash between their separate emotional baggage and the well being of their collective purposes.
"Anyhow, let's just get lunch and forget about it. I might not have a stomach but I can go for a bite or two."
"Of course, Kyoko-sama. I shall inform Kabuto and have him prepare your meals at once." Albedo half-bowed, showing that they have returned to a more professional setting.
"Hm~, Maybe I should invite Cranium. Wait, I don't want to intrude in his lesson."
Just then, a bright idea popped up into her mind.
"How about you Albedo? Would you like to join me for lunch? Of course if your schedule-"
"YES! OF COURSE! I WOULD LOVE TO KYOKO-SAMA!"
The loud reply, which Kyoko believes all of Nazarick can hear, instantly cut her halfway and startled her.
"F-forgive me Kyoko-sama. W-was I too loud?"
The recovered great spirit giggled. Now finding the entire thing amusing rather than surprising.
"Isn't it obvious?" Albedo's response, which completely contrasts her enthusiasm seconds ago only made it funnier for the great spirit. "But, since it's a definite yes what are we waiting for?"
"Yes! Please lead the way, Kyoko-sama!"
"Alrighty then~!"
The two women left the office with nothing bright thoughts. Something that should be impossible yet was accomplished by the presence of the other.
The word victorious summarizes Albedo's inner world. This incident has no doubt increased her standing as well as capability in the eye of the mother of her object of affection. Of course, she was happy also to assists one of the leaders of the supreme beings.
'Kuku~ Take that you useless Leech! No matter what you do, there's no way you can come close to what I have accomplished today!'
As for Kyoko, her thought was also that of a romantic kind.
'I wonder if he's missing me?'
Said question was quickly answered by her following thought which held zero doubts whatsoever.
'Oh, he is~'
With an even bigger smile each, Kyoko and Albedo made their way to the recently established dining room.
XxX
'I miss her.'
Was what Momonga inwardly thought as he and the party of adventurers trekked through the edges of the forest.
There were two routes from Re-Lantier to Carne Village if you travel by horse-drawn carriage. After going north, keep right by hugging the edge of the forest. Or go east then turn north. This time the former route was chosen.
Since there was a higher chance of encountering monsters along the edge of the forest, taking this path was the wrong choice from a bodyguard's perspective. Even so, everyone still chose this route.
This was done for Momonga to fulfill his promise to Peter and hunt monsters. Although there was a lot more to lose than to gain, they were still able to choose this path without worries because Momon and Nabel were there. Besides, Narberal demonstrating her ability to cast tier 3 magic 'Lightning' when they left the city was a big factor.
And technically they were not entering the forest. Rather, they were traveling along the border between the forest and the plains, so the monsters they might encounter wouldn't be too strong. With the ability of the group, they should be able to manage.
Also, by taking this route, the monster encounters would allow the members to verify each other's combat prowess. With these points in mind, they decided on this route.
The sun reached its zenith after they left Re-Lantier; they could see a dense, primitive forest in the distance. The giant trees' luscious branches and leaves were dense to the extent that sunlight could not penetrate the forest.
This reduced visibility produced the illusion of being swallowed by darkness. The gaps between the trees looked like gaping maws, waiting for prey to enter; the eeriness made the party uneasy.
Though as mentioned earlier, these things were dead least in the concern of the Overlord in hiding.
'Maybe it'll be fine if I just message her? It's just like making a short phone call during a break between an important meeting right?'
But he knew better. And since he was the one who insists on keeping contact minimized in the first place, there's no way he'll be able to get away with it without being reprimanded, humiliated, or most likely both by his wife who is too Tsundere to admit it.
'No, wait. If she misses me too wouldn't she'd be glad if I call instead? She might even be willing to let me off the hook? But if so wouldn't she have called me already? Or is she bidding her time all this time and is waiting for me to make the first move!? GAH? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!?'
To the outside world, it looked like that the warrior dressed in a jet black full armor was detached from the crowd due to being busy taking their entire surrounding in. Not one soul would ever come close to the truth of him worrying about his love life like a middle-schooler would.
"Momon-san, from here on will be dangerous grounds. We won't encounter monsters we can't handle, but to be safe, we need to careful."
Those words coming from Peter who mere moments ago weren't on guard snapped him back into reality and out of his dilemma.
"Understood. Keep an ear for anything, Fu, Nabe."
"Understood."
"Will do~"
The reply came from Naberal Gamma and Fuitchi respectively. And while Momonga was quite unnerved by the nonchalance of the latter, he decided to keep quiet seeing as no one bothered to address it.
'They also didn't ask Fuitchi-nii to show off any of his skill. Is this world that combat-oriented?'
Granted the neglection itself is a blessing considering the effect Fuitchi's music has on people. Or perhaps they are taking lightly of him because of his ranks? Maybe they'll only be interested once he reached a certain level as an adventurer, there was an adamantine team led by a bard after all.
'Whatever the case is, we can use it to our advantage. Though hopefully, it won't come to that.'
If this was a game, what monster that we will encounter is dependent on the place, but the reality is different. God knows what kind of difficult enemy might pop up.
Based on the battle of Carne from a few days prior, and according to the intelligence revealed by the interrogated Sunlight Scripture prisoners, Momonga was confident that he was strong. But that was his power as a Magic Caster;
He was currently wearing armor forged by magic and thus was unable to chant most of his spells. With his suppressed strength, could he still play the role of a competent vanguard?
Not only that, but an escort's victory condition was not to defeat the enemy; rather, his job was to thoroughly protect his charge, in this case, Nfirea. Pondering this, Momonga felt uneasy.
He planned to dispel his armor if a crisis arose, but in doing so, he would have to kill his traveling companions or alter their memories. He didn't wish to do such a thing, even the latter can be done easily by his brother in law.
Momonga turned his head and looked at Narberal, who nodded upon sensing his gaze. And as always, Fuitchi didn't even bother to return the gesture, not that he even noticed it in the first place.
They had discussed beforehand and Narberal was to use higher tier magic in a pinch, up to tier 5, and hope to resolve the problem. If this weren't enough, Momonga would dispel his armor and fight seriously.
As for Fuitchi, he had specifically requested him to only cast weak buff and debuff, nothing that went pass a tier 3 spell. Unlike Naberal, however, he is not allowed to increase his limit even in a pinch due to fearing the possible mental effect.
Outside of their group, Lukeluther misunderstood the exchanged gaze between 'Momon' and 'Nabe' and flirtingly joked with Narberal:
"It'll be fine, don't worry. As long as there's no surprise attack, it won't be too hard. And with me scouting, no enemies will sneak by. So Nabel-chan, I am strong right?"
Narberal ignored Lukeluther and his serious expression:
"Momon-san, may I crush this... lower life form (Mosquito)?"
"Cold words from Nabel-san get!"
Everyone smiled awkwardly at Lukeluther, who gave a thumbs up and didn't react to Narberal's cruel response. They assumed that Narberal didn't consider all humans as lower life forms, only specific people.
Momonga quickly rejected Narberal's sincere request. He wasn't really worried since everyone misunderstood her, but the sight did incite something else.
That was nostalgia.
'I was like that. With Kyoko no less.'
It was a time where he was trying to figure out just what he felt for the women that will become his wife. Though at the time, she was his boss as well as the person he's friendliest with. Naturally, it adds extreme complications. Even if many would claim otherwise unofficially.
And once he properly sorted his feeling, oh did he realize how much of trouble he was in.
There were too many he risks losing should he decide to pursue a relationship taking their difference in status into accounts. Kyoko came from the upper class of society after all while he was a commoner through and through.
It didn't help that he had seen first hand how destructive the aftershock can be, ranging from ruined career to the loss of life and other tragedies that should be impossible to be found in modern times.
The romance was the herald of destruction whatever the age is. It'll be better for him to let the minefield untravelled and not set off any possible explosion. Because of her position especially, it may end up affecting more than him after all.
Surely many would agree that that is the wise decision. Love or not, feelings such as those are too volatile to be based on to act upon...
Yes...He has to think rationally and not let his one-time emotion get the best of him…
'Of course, what I did was the exact opposite of listening to reason.'
At the end of the day, with the same earnestness of the young man who got shot down right in front of him no less. Suzuki Satoru chased after Kyoko Kurayanashi.
The rest, was, of course, history as they knew it.
He couldn't help but to inwardly smile, remembering the good old days and the best decision he had ever made his entire life.
The one time he listened to himself and wholeheartedly pursued something other than the game that is YGGDRASIL.
'...Wait!? What am I even doing!? Pondering about those stuff at this age!? Ah if anyone knows I'll never hear the end of it!?'
"It will be fine. From here to Carne Village, we are in the territory of the 'Virtuous King of the Forest', a powerful monster. Unless we are extremely unlucky, we won't encounter any monsters."
Nfirea, who seemed to have misunderstood something interjected. Unknowingly saving Momonga from his inner weeping.
"Virtuous King of the Forest?" Surprisingly, the bewildered repetition came from Fuitchi.
Momonga recalled the intelligence collected from Carne Village. 'Virtuous King of the Forest' is a monster capable of using magic, possessing incredible power. It lives deep in the forest, so there are few eyewitness reports, but its existence has been around for quite a long while.
Some even say it is a several hundred years old four-legged silverish white beast with a snake-like tail.
He imagined the appearance of the monster in his mind.
'Speaking of the Virtuous King of the Forest, some extinct animals looked... Looked like monkey… Ah, orangutans. Forest man… Or sage? With a snake as its tail… Was there such a monster?'
Thinking YGGDRASIL had that sort of monster, Momonga finally found the answer:
'It's a [Nue]! ...The appearance should be the head of a monkey, body of a tanuki, limbs of a tiger, and tail of a snake… I'm not sure if it was a monster from Yggdrasil, but it might have been summoned just like those angels.'
As Momonga was thinking about Nue in YGGDRASIL, Fuitchi's source of interest on the beast was made public.
"I wonder what kind of sounds it makes…"
Again, he was amazed at how the sword of darkness is unbothered by Fuitchi's odd obsession with the art of sound.
Under the scorching sun, the group chatted leisurely as they advanced. Their shoes were stained by juice from trampled grass, the smell of which was prominent.
Looking at the group wiping away their sweat, Momonga was grateful for his undead body. He was unfazed by the bright sunshine and wasn't tired from wearing the heavy armor. Only Lukeluther remained lively, joking while the group moved in silence:
"Everyone, there is no need to be so careful since I am on the lookout. Nabel-chan trusts me; look at how calm she is."
"Not because of you. It's because Momon-san and Fu-san are here."
Narberal frowned. Thinking that things might get out of hand, Momonga places his hand on Narberal's shoulder, and her expression warmed instantly.
Observing their interaction, Lukeluther asked:
"Say, Nabel-chan and Momon-san, are you two a couple?"
"Cou-couple? What are you saying! That's Kyoko-sama-!"
"Nabe, aren't you being a bit too loud?"
Momonga quickly cut in.
"Ah!"
With her eyes wide open, Narberal covered her mouth with her hands. Realizing her folly and the unwanted attention she had garnered. Nonetheless, Momonga only shook his head.
Though Naberal's immediate and loud response would raise suspicion, Momonga was not at all bothered by how easily she was riled nor the specific detail she had unknowingly let loose.
She only mentioned Kyoko's name after all. There was no need to alter memories since he can simply play along with the detail. And if they insisted in being nosy, he'll simply play the role of a widower.
With that, he instead chuckled. Which by everyone's reaction, was enough to leave them speechless.
In a surprising display, Momonga patted Naberal's head. With a fitting warm tone he spoke:
"Is that how it looks? Well, our relationship is nothing like that. If anything, I consider Nabe to be my daughter."
That earned him a series of nods and 'oh' from most people present. There was some mutter about age differences and his digits, but except for Lukeruther's mumbling about impressing him to get to Nabe, it looks like they've managed to avert the crisis.
He then turned his attention to Naberal, who is looking at him intently with both guilt and curiosity. Could it be that she was hung up on her own mistake? Or is she curious about him viewing her in the same league as his three creations?
With another chuckle, he ruffled her hair before giving her a confirming nod. The Guardian's expression quickly brightening up much to his joy.
He decided that Naberal was picked to accompany them after all. This was the least he can do to make up for it.
"Momon-san, I'm sorry for the rudeness of my companion. It is wrong to make conjectures about the affairs of others."
"Don't worry. If he can keep that in mind in the future, we can just let this go."
Again Momonga's worries come mostly from how Fuitchi looks completely disinterested in virtually everything that has been going on. But it looks like that too was for naught.
"Wah— Nabel-chan hates me now. Ugu, her opinion of me is negative." Lukeluther's head depressingly drooped.
"That fool…! I will lecture him later. And I will pretend I didn't hear anything just now."
"Well, I will have to trouble you with that. Since Lukeluther is on guard, let's leave it to him. I would like to find out a few things."
After Peter smiled in acknowledgment, Momonga walked to Ninya and Dyne's side. Switching position with the latter who then walked alongside Narberal.
"I have a few questions related to magic."
After Ninya nodded Momonga began to let loose a series of questions to sate his curiosity. While he received just what he wanted Ninya admitted how his knowledge as a whole is lacking, and that Momonga would have a much more successful time questioning a magic caster sponsored by a country.
Other than the things he had already know, and some tidbit or two about how things are drastically different here, Momonga concluded that he can't compare a magically-developed world to a scientific one due to the difference in the level of civilization.
appeared to be at the Middle Ages, but it was only a few generations behind Momonga's world; some things were already on the modern level. And all this development was engendered by the existence of magic.
After some time, the once silent Fu spoke.
"Hm?"
"What is it, Fu-san?"
"I'm hearing some movement and quite a number at that. Twenty-one in total."
The specific and large number alerted everyone, and they all quickly draw their weapon. In a surprising display of professionalism, Lukeluther hastily moved to Fuitchi's side and asked him the specific direction from where the noise is coming from.
"Fu-san is right! There's movement!" The Ranger said tensely, looking at the direction Fuitchi is pointing at. His tone completely different from the one used when flirting with Narberal and looking like a veteran professional adventurer.
"What should we do?"
"Don't force your way. If it stays inside the forest, then let's ignore it!"
"It would be best to stick to the plan and let Nfirea fall back!"
As they were discussing loudly, there was a movement in the forest. The monsters showed themselves. Numbering exactly as Fuitchi proclaimed, fifteen goblins and six ogres are lumbering towards them.
"I hoped that Fu-sa was wrong since that number meant we can't avoid a battle… But he was right on the money…"
"Yes, you are right. Goblins and ogres will attack when they see a smaller group. Or rather, their intelligence tells them to gauge combat prowess by comparing numbers, which can be a bit of a hassle."
While everyone was busy, Momonga had already begun to saunter towards the Trudging woodlanders.
"Eh? Momonga-san? What are you doing?" Peter addressed the detaching warrior.
"If a mere ogre troubles me, my bark would be worse than my bite. Please watch me dispose of the ogres with ease."
"You want me to play you a note Nii-san? Should help you finish faster."
"No need for that, keep your music for a more important occasion, Fu."
"Got it, then I'll just stick with Nfirea in case anything went pass you… Though that's probably impossible…"
"Haha, we shall see now, shall we? Then, Friends from the Sword of Darkness, please support your teammates."
Hearing their confirmation laced with confidence, all of them nodded.
"Then we will proceed as you wish. Everyone, if the battle were to commence under these circumstances since we're near the forest, won't the enemies attempt to flee?"
"How about doing it the usual way? We will pull them further out."
"Let's do that! Since Momon-san will fend off the enemies' attack, what about the ones that sneak past, Peter?"
"I will activate my martial arts skill [Fortress] to keep the ogres in check. Dyne, please stop the goblins. Ninya cast defensive magic on me, then concentrate on casting offensive magic. Also, even if this might be an unnecessary concern, please pay attention to Miss Nabel's safety.
Lukeluther, take care of the goblins. If any ogres breakthrough, you have to stop them. In this case, Ninya will prioritize cleaning up the goblins."
Everyone looked at each other and nodded, expressing their comprehension of his instructions. The battle plan was smoothly set, their teamwork was excellent.
As someone whose full capability can only be drawn out with the presence of his wife, Momonga knows that cooperation among even a small group wasn't easy. It took him weeks just to be able to fight beside her without worrying about friendly fire and hundreds of hours more to achieve their current concurrence.
And while the sword of Darkness is far from their equal, they have undoubtedly reached a level of synergy that not many four-man groups can attain. This group is more than just individuals seeking profit and is akin to brothers in arms who'll help the other through thick and thin.
"Momon-san, you don't need support from magic?"
"No, no need. us two will be enough. Also, we don't need to worry about Nfirea since my brother is with him. "
"That's really… very confident."
Peter showed a hint of insecurity in his words. If the ones in charge of the defense line went down, it would lead to a domino effect, causing the entire team to collapse. That should be what he was worried about. After all, this wasn't a game and their lives were on the line.
"Please trust us, it'll become apparent once it starts."
Momonga finished the conversation with this sentence.
"Let's start when you are ready."
Lukeluther pulled the string on his composite longbow until it started to creak. The string made a cracking sound as it propelled an arrow straight out, which landed 10 m from the goblins in the plains.
The sudden attack made the goblins sneer at Lukeluther with laughter. They were mocking at the missed shot. The goblins couldn't hit a target 120 m away either, but they seemed to have forgotten that.
Being attacked and their superiority in numbers caused the violent tendencies of the goblins to swell, and they started to shout, charging at Lukeluther without reservation. The ogres followed behind.
They lost themselves in their bloodthirst, they neither formed ranks nor put up their shields. Their minds turned blank. Lukeluther smiled after confirming that.
"Watch this-"
He shot again when the distance was 90m. His aim was true, and the arrow pierced a goblin's head. This goblin, located towards the back, staggered a few steps and fell dead.
The distance narrowed, but Lukeluther's bow hand didn't look tense. He believed that someone would protect him, even if his foe were right beside him.
"Reinforce Armor."
Behind Lukeluther, Ninya cast defensive spells. Hearing the voice of his teammates, Lukeluther nocked another arrow. He shot at the 50m mark, hitting the head of another goblin. At this time Peter and Dyne also started moving.
The goblins were nimble, but the ogres had large strides, so their speeds were about the same. But after sprinting about 100m on the grass plains, the ogres with their powerful legs were in the front, with the goblins behind them. The distance was still a bit too far for a wide area spell to encompass all the monsters.
But it was enough since Dyne's task was to restrain one of the ogres.
"Nature Bind."
As Dyne cast his spell, the grass under an ogre's feet started wriggling before turning into vines and bind its target. The unnaturally tenacious chains of vegetation locked the ogre in place, making it roar in frustration.
Amidst the struggle, Momonga casually advanced with Narberal behind. Their strides suggested that were taking a stroll rather than intercepting charging monsters.
As the lead ogre approached, Momonga reached behind his back, grabbing the hilts of both his sword while Narberal reached under her cape to draw her own.
Drawing a large arc, two swords appeared before Momonga. The bright light entering their eyes made the Sword of Darkness members gasp. The two swords in his hand were flashy and had a length of more than 150cm. Rather than instruments of war, they looked like expensive works of art.
The engraving on the grooves of the swords looked like two intertwined snakes. The tip of the swords spread out like a fan, emitting a cold, sharp radiance.
A heroic weapon, surely those were what within the dark warrior's grasp.
The swords in his hands were the celebrated Hero's Swords. His figure made the Sword of Darkness party gasp again. If the scene before caused them to be in awe, the current one made them speechless.
The longer the sword, the heavier it is. Even a weapon enchanted with weight reduction was not easy to wield. They knew from their short journey so far that Momonga had amazing arm strength, but their common sense was unable to accept that someone could wield such a colossal sword so easily.
But...
But Momonga was swinging them as if he were holding clubs, that image was truly awe-inspiring.
"Momon-san… who in the world are you…"
Peter spoke on behalf of everyone as he sighed. As a warrior, he understood how much arm strength was needed to use such a powerful technique. He didn't know how much time he needed to train before reaching such a stage, which shocked him. He knew they were on different tiers, but the scene before him still made his legs tremble.
Even the dull goblins were frightened by him, slowing down their reckless pace and made a detour towards Peter and the rest. Only the stupid ogres who were confident in their arm strength charged unknowingly to their demise.
The distance narrowed and the lead ogre raised its club. The swords in Momonga's hands were huge, but the ogre's club had a wider attack range. When the ogre started its attack, Momonga had already stepped into their range.
He was like the wind. He swung the giant sword in his right hand with an even faster speed; the afterimage of a white flash slash seemed to slice through space for a moment.
That slash was too imposing, even though it was not directed towards them, the others felt as though they were witnessing death right by their side. He ended it in a single attack.
Momonga shifted his attention from the ogre before him to another ogre. As if waiting for Momonga to leave, the top half of the slashed ogre stayed on for a while before finally falling to the ground; the bottom half was still standing. Blood and organs were exposed to the air, creating a pungent smell, emphasizing the fact that this was no illusion.
The downward diagonal slash made a clean cut.
They were still in the midst of battle, but both sides stopped moving time seemed to stop as they silently watch this amazing scene. Killing in one blow. Even the bulky body of the ogre couldn't escape the fate of being slashed in half.
"... Amazing."
Someone grunted softly. The voice was clear in the quiet battlefield.
"... Unimaginable. He surpassed the Mithril level and reached Orichalcum… No, could it be Adamantium level?"
Slashing in half with a single strike.
It wasn't impossible. A few skilled swordsmen or those with powerful magic weapons might be able to do it. But if you wield a two-handed giant sword with one hand, it would be hard to exert the strength that was necessary to slash your enemy in half with a single strike, that was common sense.
Two-handed weapons were meant to be held with two hands. The whole point was to use both the slash's centrifugal force and sword's weight to attack; it wasn't meant to be wielded with only one arm's strength.
Hence either Momonga's sword was enchanted with powerful magic, or Momonga's strength in one arm was stronger than a normal warrior using two hands. Or maybe both. Seeing this shocking scene, the ogres unconsciously stopped, made an expression of horror, and backed away. Momonga advanced briskly to close the distance.
"What? Not coming?"
A calm and soft voice sounded out. Such a simple question was enough to intimidate the ogres because they had witnessed the difference of power between them. The dark warrior closed in onto the other ogres at an amazing speed, a speed that someone wearing armor shouldn't possess.
"Waarghh-!"
The ogre let out a howl that was a cross between a wail and a shout, raising the club in its hand to face its attacker. But everyone knew that was too slow.
Momonga swung the giant sword in his left hand once he got close enough. The top half of the ogre spun in the air and landed at a different spot from its lower half. That was a horizontal slash, slicing the ogre in half with one strike.
"Momon-san… is he a monster…?"
Stunned once again by the scene before them, no one objected to Dyne's speculation.
"... And so, the rest…"
Momonga took a step forward, the ugly faces of the ogres froze stiff and they backed further away. The goblins that made a large detour around hiss defense line attacked Peter and the others. The Sword of Darkness members who were watching the fight reacted to the goblin's attack and started to move.
The Sword of Darkness proves their worth as they expertly handled the goblins, each member showcasing their strength all the while covering their teammates' weakness. The whole thing may seem underwhelming in comparison to Momonga's display, with the team receiving the burnt of an attack now and then, but in the Overlord's eyes, their coordination was undoubtedly superb.
'Still, it's better not to let the fight drag on for too long.'
Intending to shatter the morale of the goblins, Momonga swung his giant sword once more. The sound of the wind being sliced was followed by the sound of two consecutive heavy thuds.
As everyone expected, the body count of the ogre continued to rise. There were only 2 ogres left still clinging on to life, one was bound by grass, the other trembling before the Dark Warrior.
Momonga's helmet turned towards the last ogre facing him. The ogre seemed to have sensed his gaze from the thin slit of the helmet, dropping its club and running for the forest with a weird groan. Its speed was faster than its attack just now, but there was no way it could escape.
"Nabel, do it."
The cold command was issued, and Narberal standing by behind him nodded slightly.
"Lightning."
As commanded, a flash of lightning burst forth and violently shook the air, striking the escaping ogre with the sound of thunder. The projectile didn't stop with one casualty and pierced through the ogre bounded by grass behind its first victim, completely erasing the presence of all Ogres from the attacking group and leaving behind only goblins.
"Run Away!"
"Run Away, run away!"
The goblin who watched this scene in this despair screamed and attempt to escape, but Peter was faster than them. The routed goblins were no threat and the Sword of Darkness disposed of the goblins one after another. Ninya who didn't need to conserve mana joined in the attacks too. In the end, there was nothing left of The Goblins except for their corpses, none managing to escape.
"...Amazing…"
Even the pharmacist Nfirea who has next to no knowledge in combat couldn't help but gawk in awe while looking at the aftermath.
"Certainly is now, isn't it?" The musician beside him commented, not at all sounding impressed.
The two bystanders watched as the Sword of Darkness gathered around Momonga like moths to a flame. The expression of awe and bewilderment etched to all of them.
Fuitchi's ears easily pick up their conversation despite their considerable distance, not that he'd need it given the obvious air of amazement surrounding the other adventurers.
"Well looks like they're all done. But I'm afraid it's better to get a move on as quickly as possible. There's no telling if other groups of Goblins and Ogres this size are nearby, so we should not stay in the same place for too long."
Of course, he knew that there aren't any thanks to hid godly hearing but warned them anyway as to keep things going.
"Oh, Right! Lets!" Nfirea nodded obediently as he began directing the carriage towards the others with Fuitchi in tow.
Their first battle as adventurers ended without much of a hitch.
XxX
"ATCHOO!"
Within a carriage speeding away from the walled city, Shalltear Bloodfallen sneezed.
"Are you alright, Shalltear?"
The Skeletal [Psychopomp] Torihiki asked the vampire, who hurriedly wiped her nose and fixed her posture.
"O-of course Torihiki-sama! I'm fine. P-please, forgive me for doing such a thing in your presence!"
Filling the carriage with the number of four was herself, Sebas, Solution, and her master's brother as well as her beloved's uncle, Torihiki. She was sitting next to the butler whereas the other side was occupied by betrothed and her future husband, the Pleiades' second-youngest affectionately intertwining her arms with their lord's right.
Impulsively, Shalltear frowned. Even with her limited knowledge of arranged marriage, she knows for a fact that Solution and Torihiki-sama get along much more than people who are stuck in a loveless agreement would. She could attest that both of them are in love with one another, though the master seems to be much more hesitant in showing it compared to his fiance.
Of course, she knows her place and would never overstep her bounds a second time, with the same supreme being no less. And the added fact that her other rulers seem to encourage the behavior was more than enough to prevent her from prodding too much.
By all means, no one but Solution has any right to criticize the give and take within the 'relationship'. So with the assassin slime feeling content, voicing out anything else against the two would be an act of idiocy.
Due to the previously mentioned reasons, Shalltear exercised the behavior to its uttermost extent. Even more so because she wanted to draw in the maid into her camp regarding 'who is best suited to stand beside their supreme one firstborn'.
If she succeeds, there is a chance also in earning the blessing from Torihiki himself, which might inadvertently reach Minerva's parents. In other words, Shalltear is currently attempting to shoot down two birds with one stone. Fixing her past sins and consolidating support to grasp her beloved's arm in marriage.
"Are you sure you're alright? That sneeze was a loud one, and you look like you've been out of it for some time now."
Had it not been for her vampiric condition, Shalltear was sure she would have turned beet red from the embarrassment.
"No-no Torihiki-sama! Please forgive me once again! It seems that I let my thoughts get the best of me. As for the sneeze you need not worry! I'm sure it's just some dust that gets into this one's nose!"
That was a lie of course because Shalltear never needs to draw a breath in the first place. If anything, she was sure that she sneezed because someone, in particular, had mentioned her being one way or another.
'That damned gorilla! I don't know what it is but you're probably talking shit about me, aren't you!? Just you wait until I get back… And then…!'
It was thanks to her physiology also that her anger was hidden. The lack of flow of blood making it impossible for her to exhibit a bursting vein and the like.
"Alright, if you say so. Just remember to quickly report to me if there's anything that affects your physical condition in any way. Something like that doesn't concern only you after all…"
"Yes! This one will not disappoint you this time! Torihiki-sama!"
Torihiki only nodded. With that settled, the swindler then turned to the outside world. Soaking in the blurring view as their carriage continues to gallop
The surrounding area was unexpectedly bright, illuminated by a large, bright moon that hung in the sky... Even so, it was still foolish to travel hastily in a night like this. Putting up lights, making camp, and setting a watch detail would've been a wiser choice.
Saying the night wasn't a world controlled by humans wouldn't be enough. To put it more clearly, places, where the light didn't shine, didn't belong to humans. Countless animals, demi-humans, and monsters lurked in the night; many with eyes that could pierce the dark and attack humans.
Said common sense didn't apply to them of course, as barely anything would be able to register themselves as a threat to the convoy. While some may view their plan to be foolish considering the overwhelming danger they are exposing themselves to, but it's most likely nothing their raw combat capability couldn't handle.
'Guess Kyoko is rubbing off on my little brother. This is a bit reckless after all.'
With everyone seemingly burrowed within their separate thoughts, Sebas opened his mouth with a relaxed tone and shattered the momentary silence.
"There is a certain matter I've always wanted to inquire Shalltear about.."
"Hmm? Question for me? What is it?"
"You and Aura-sama seem to be on bad terms, is there any reason for that?"
Unknown to Sebas, his seemingly simple question stroke a chord within the present Supreme Being. His newfound interests noticed only by Solution who shifted only ever so slightly also.
"... I don't think our relationship is bad."
Shalltear answered quietly, the smallest hint of peeve noticed only
"It doesn't feel that way."
Sebas continued. Shalltear's face frowned as if she had eaten something bitter:
"I... Me... okay. It's because my creator Peroroncino-sama made my settings to be on bad terms with her, so I tease her a bit more. However, it's probably the same for her, maybe Bukubukuchagama-sama made that kid's setting to be at odds with me."
Feeling disinterested, Shalltear waved her hand and met Sebas' eyes for the first time.
"So it's something that you do because of the setting and nothing else?"
Torihiki joined in, causing both NPC to tense with his sudden query.
Shalltear briefly glanced at Sebas who is next to him, who is as surprised as she is. She wondered for a moment on whether or not was this a set up to make her look bad but decided against the conjecture knowing how chivalrous Sebas is and his hatred for conspiracies.
It is most likely that this question, in particular, did pique his interests, and that this might be one of those chances to impress him that she had waited for.
After steadying herself, Shalltear gulped down her fear and opened her mouth.
"N-no… I don't think so, Torihiki-sama. My creator Peroroncino-sama and that kid's creator— Bukubukuchagama-sama are younger brothers and older sisters. In a way, we could also be considered sisters…"
With her answer sent, she can now do nothing but wait.
It made it worse that she can't get a read on her lord. His half-covered skull devoid of any flesh making it impossible to let any of his inner workings to leak out.
Does he found her answer to be satisfactory, or instead, lacking?
"Siblings huh… That certainly does explain a lot."
Even without a need for breathing, Shalltear would have let out a sigh of relief.
"Siblings- so that's how it is!" Sebas also voiced out loud.
Knowing that she is on the right track, Shalltear continued.
"In the past, when Perorocino-sama and the other supreme beings— Lucifer-sama and Nishiki Enrai-sama—came to my domain, they mentioned that."
When she recalled how she accompanied the great beings making their rounds, Shalltear's eyes were full of adoration:
"Perorocino-sama once mentioned that Bukubukuchagama-sama had a job called voice acting. She was very popular and provided her voice for 'H Game', so whenever he bought a popular game he was looking forward to, the image of his sister's face came to mind, making him lose his drive."
Torihiki instantly snorted and seconds later began to chuckle.
"Yeah, that sounds about right. I remember Kyoko-nee complaining about something along those lines when Momonga made an appearance in her favorite game."
The mention of both of their greatest lords raises the engrossment of the two NPCs. Both now interested in the topic out of pure curiosity because it involves their leaders.
"Voice acting... I recall that it is a job using your voice. They will even sing sometimes, so it should be similar to bards. To think that Momonga-sama himself had done it-"
"That's wrong, Sebas!" Shalltear cut in, her voice louder than earlier. "You should know that since Momonga-sama partakes in it, then is a task unlike any other!"
"Wrong? What is it then?"
"I heard this from Bukubukuchagama-sama herself, a voice actress is someone who bestows a soul to a work through the use of her voice. Which means voice acting is a profession that creates life."
She then turned towards Torihiki, her expression turning from that of a lecturing one into one asking for confirmation.
"That's how it is, isn't it? Torihiki-sama?"
"That certainly put an enthusiastic twist to it. But is nonetheless an apt description."
The confirmation allowed Shalltear to beam victoriously whereas Sebas solemnly nodded his head in understanding.
Torihiki chuckled again seeing the two guardians' antics. Sebas's answer wasn't exactly off the mark, but it does give the impression of taking the hard work of those who passionately pursue the craft lightly.
Thus, he went along with Shalltear's understanding. Who despite being overly magical in some fashion can be taken as a partial truth? Nonetheless, their dialogue confirmed that the NPCs retain their memories from before their transportation to the new world.
Of course, it was Momonga and Kyoko who discovers it first. Their constant interaction with their children eventually leading to said discovery. It was left mostly unexplored because any further pursuit would yield academic results only, but Torihiki just couldn't help raising his non-existing eyebrows every time it is mentioned.
Were the NPC fully conscious from the moment of their creation and were simply lying dormant or was it their transportation here that grant their memories meaning, thus, bringing them to live?
'As an avid reader, that kind of romantic question is a real nail-biter.'
"If you do not mind, Sebas. I would like to ask you a question in return." This time, Shalltear took up the mantle of the inquisitor.
"Oh, then I shall try and answer it."
"Much appreciated. Then, the relationship between you and Demiurge, it's quite bad isn't it? The supreme beings didn't order you to do that, so why did it turn out this way?"
Sebas didn't say a word regarding the question. Shalltear had initially readied the question as a means to push the butler's buttons but is now genuinely interested in the topic due to their lord's fixation on the matter.
A glance from her and a shift from her master reveals that she was once again right on the mark.
"...I am not so sure about it myself. It's probably out of my nature, I just dislike him. However, it should be the same for him."
It seems that Sebas was on the wavelength as her, as his answer seemed to be directed more towards the listening soul taker rather than the questioning vampire.
Their lord in response leaned forward to their direction, forcing Solution who had been silent the whole time to let go of him.
"Is it as simple as that, Sebas? Nothing more than a small nudging out of one's preference?"
Both of them gulped at their lord's newfound seriousness. It was clear that unlike earlier, they now have his undivided attention.
"Y-yes, Torihiki-sama. At least for me, it is exactly as you said."
"Then, what about you, Shalltear? What are your thoughts on the matter?"
The vampire almost yelped at being addressed so suddenly, the two dots that is her lord's eyes hovering on her like a pointed laser. Swallowing her doubts once more, Shalltear declared her answer.
"For me, there is nobody that makes me feel that way, Torihiki-sama. Though, I suspect that maybe the feelings of the creators are embedded deeply in our hearts."
The tense air hangs for longer than any of them liked, turning heavier as their lord leaned back on his chair seemingly ready to pass his mark.
"So you all think so too huh."
As Shalltear relish once more in getting the correct answer, Sebas founded his interests spurred once more.
"Torihiki-sama, this might sound rude and assuming from my part but do the supreme beings consider us to be the children of our creators?"
"Yep, that's how it is. I mean how else do you think we see all of you?"
Between Sebas's bold question and Torihiki's curt answer, the two women present don't know which of the two they should be surprised more by.
It's true that the supreme beings bestowed them with positions and set the hierarchy but also fundamentally treats them as equals. But to proclaim that they are their children, with Sebas's vocabulary making it extremely straightforward at that, was another thing entirely.
"I mean, Minerva, Laufeyson, and Cranium, are the children of my brother and his wife. And the same goes for Kuwaga and Kabuto, even if they consider themselves to be my servants. So it's only natural that the same goes for you and your creator, don't you think?"
The bewildered looks shared by everyone except for himself was another object on interests for the sole player present.
The NPCs' behavior and treatment of the three mentioned names was a mirror image of that between a royalty and their retainer. And exempting his own 'sons' whom he designed to act more like a helper, it was obvious that everyone acknowledges them to be children of their leaders.
But for some reason, they are not as unchecked when it comes to their relationship with their creators. It was a natural response since the aforementioned parents are not here with them, perhaps they were burying the fact along with their inner jealousy of those whose maker was present?
And speaking of creators not interacting with the NPC they created.
"Now that I think about it, I haven't seen Pandora's Actor in a while…" Torihiki blurted out loud, once more collecting the attention of everyone inside the carriage.
"Pandora's Actor…" Shalltear repeated. "That would be the name of the guardian residing in the 8th floor alongside Victim, isn't it? The NPC created by Momonga-sama alone?"
"You got the location wrong, but that's him. My first nephew who is currently having the step-child treatment."
Torihiki folded his arms as he looked back further. Pandora's actor was in fact, the first NPC created by Momonga before he had met Kyoko. Thus, unlike his 'siblings' who are celebrated as royalty, he seems to be recognized only as 'Momonga's child' and nothing more.
It was odd considering Laufeyson and Cranium were also separate projects done by Momonga and Kyoko respectively, the latter being no different than the Ever-Changing Faceless Phantom except for the time of their creation.
From the looks of it, the guardian's only considers the NPCs created after Momonga and Kyoko's marriage to be their children. Thus, condemning him to his current solitude due to his status and place of residence.
"I recall there were foolish people who opposed the supreme beings long ago, attacking in huge numbers and breaking through the 7th floor. But the 9th floor of the supreme being's base wasn't attacked.
Considering this, the last place that had been attacked was the 8th floor, right? I don't remember much, but the enemy attacked with overwhelming force, so we would've needed a force on the same scale to match them. However, no one knew who repelled them. So he was not the one responsible for disposing of the intruders?"
"Yes, he's wasn't. To begin with, Pandora's Actor lives in the Treasury on the 10th floor. As for the 8th floor and the invasion, I'm afraid I'm the wrong guy to be asked that question. Since I wasn't exactly a part of the guild at that time, a lot of details probably escaped me."
So the Soul Taker admitted.
"I'm more surprised that you didn't know much about him. Granted my brother probably doesn't talk about it much but is his existence really that obscured?"
"Yes, I'm afraid besides his ability which is on the same level as mine and his role as the guardian of the deepest part of the treasury I knew naught about him as an individual."
This time Sebas answered, causing Torihiki's imaginary brows knitted further.
Momonga avoided him out of embarrassment because his first creation reflected his past chuunibyou tendencies. Whereas Kyoko just couldn't keep a straight face around him and kept her distance as to not hurt his feelings accidentally.
"Well regardless, he's a good guy through and through even if a bit boisterous. It'd be nice if you all visit him at some point. No, wait, I guess it'd be pretty hard since you'd need a ring just to get there..."
Located in the 10th Floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick the Treasury is spatially isolated from other areas, warranting the use of a Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown for entrance alone. Not only that, but the air in the Treasury is also toxic, and thus, anyone without poison immunity or items granting it will die within three steps.
"Oh right! If I'm not mistaken, Minerva and the others visit him now and then. Maybe you can just go to them and ask them to go as their company."
He paid his nephew a quick visit before heading off and learned that his siblings had separately visited him periodically. Cranium being his most often to drop by followed by Laufeyson and finally Minerva. Should any of the guardians ask to tag along any of the three would certainly comply
"I recommend you talk with Laufeyson first though, considering Minerva, Cranium, and I are undead and don't have to worry about certain… features of the floor."
"Understood! I will do so the very first chance I get to do so!"
Shalltear shouted in honest enthusiasm, surprising everyone, and even causing the entire carriage to shook due to the sheer volume she unleashed. She brought both of her arms to her mouth in embarrassment, covering it with a red-faced expression.
Rather than goodwill or trying to get along with his fellow guardian better, Shalltear's motive was that of earning herself some personal time with Minerva. And considering the nature of her visit, she might be able to earn the backing of none other than one of her siblings.
The prospect was more than enough to excite her, io, and behold.
"...Well. I guess that's enough idle chat then?" Torihiki asked no one in particular, but everyone nonetheless curtly nodded.
"Sebas, I assume that's everything is going as planned?"
"Yes, bait, hook, and sinker. All that's left is reeling it in."
"Splendid! Then before we began there's something I want to ask you Shalltear, a request if you will..."
Banishing her awkwardness Shalltear sat up straight, trying to look as professional as possible. Something extremely difficult considering her earlier outburst.
"If you do not mind Torihiki-sama, please elaborate on the nature of this request of yours. Because I'm afraid I must decline if it jeopardizes our objective in any way."
This time it was Sebas and Solution's turn to be surprised.
In her mind, her lord Kyoko-sama's word rang:
'More than anything, that guy respect competence. He is someone who orients himself to the end goal no matter what, so there's nothing he likes more than a person who would tell him that he's getting sidetracked.'
Trusting in her mistress completely what the Vampire is trying to play the part of an uncompromising leader. She was trying to make up for her earlier cock-up against the very same person who had so readily forgiven her after all, as ironic as it sounds, being lax was the last thing she can do.
A second of silence passes, then two. Finally, after another instant, the skeletal psychopomp began nodding approvingly.
"I'm glad. It's certainly reassuring to have such a straight arrow leading this operation."
Her reply was that of a dignified nod, even though within, she was jumping around with joy at picking the 'right answer' yet again. Not that there was ever a doubt considering the tidbit came from Lady Kyoko herself.
"It is only natural as we are acting as the extension of your will. Then, the request?"
"Umu, it's not much, I merely request that you give the driver of this carriage to us."
"Us? You mean, my lord and Solution?"
Being mentioned by name, or more likely to be closely associated with the undead charlatan, the assassin slime smiled brightly. A pang of envy suddenly popped up within Shalltear, but she quickly shooed them away.
"... Is he a small fry?"
"Yep, he is just a mouthpiece and not much else."
Shalltear closed her eyes and fell into deep thought when she heard this request. Considering all the possibilities, she found an answer and nodded:
"Understood, if so then I see no harm in allowing you and your fiance to monopolize that particular target."
"Is that so? Then I'm thankful Shalltear."
Following Torihiki's lead Solution quickly lowered her head.
"Thank you, Shalltear-sama."
"Ah, it's no big deal. Don't mention it." Shalltear smiled affectionately at Solution, it was unexpected of her to have such a warm expression. "Although, I'm curious…"
"Hm? About what."
"Well, I simply couldn't help but wonder, what is it that this lowlife had done to earn your attention-!?"
The atmosphere inside the carriage became heavy, covered by a chilling air. Even the horses pulling the carriage felt it, and the carriage shook violently. Shalltear and Sebas both unconsciously swallowed the empty air in their throat, as they remember a simple fact that had alluded them for some time now.
The person in front of them was a Supreme Being, the brother of the greatest of their lords who stood atop even their creators.
Torihiki was Momonga's equal all things. Be it body, mind, and of course strength.
"Let's just say… That he said a very unpleasant thing and leave it at that. Will that explanation be enough?"
By the time Shalltear stopped her frantic nodding, she was sure that she had done the gesture for both herself and Sebas in volume. The Draconian too appearing to be relieved that the pressure was lifted off them.
As for Solution. She was the only smiling in the whole room, no doubt finding the hidden fury as a romantic gesture. The smile was even brighter and more charming than the previous one. A kind of smile that should be impossible for someone like her to ever exhibit.
Again, Shalltear found herself envious of the assassin slime. But as fast as the feelings appeared, it was evaporated as quickly when her lord clapped his hands together.
"Splendid! Then there's only one thing left to discuss…"
One last thing to ask before their first mission finally goes underway.
"Will you be okay Shalltear? Doing this task alone?"
"..."
The vampire was of course silent.
"Don't get me wrong, without a doubt you are picked for this task because of your unparalleled prowess. But my question remained, even with the drawbacks that come with your strength, will you be able to manage alone?"
There was no ill-intent to be found in his words. Only a cold logical question based on facts alone.
In YGGDRASIL, powerful jobs would be given weaknesses and handicaps to balance the game. One of the few handicaps given to Shalltear was 「Blood Frenzy」, the more blood her body was getting covered in, the stronger her urge to slaughter would become. Although her combat strength would increase, it came at the price of losing control over her mind
Furthermore, Momonga gave Sebas the order to 'capture humans who know martial arts or magic, but do so for criminals that won't pose a problem even if they disappear.' So as part of the plan, Sebas, Solution, and Torihiki played the role of a rich wilful Lover and their butler who had to clean up her mess, waiting patiently for a fish like Zach to bite. Shalltear's task was to use this fish to haul in the school of fish following behind.
From this point of view, Demiurge would be a better choice, as Similar to Aura's breath, he can control the will of others freely. Demiurge had the 「Domination Curse」 special skill, which was a powerful mind-control technique. In a mission that required the capture of the target, it would be exceptionally effective.
Despite all that Momonga chose Shalltear, who might ignore orders or even lose control, for this mission by using the process of elimination. Albedo had to protect the Great Tomb of Nazarick, as for the remaining two guardians—Shalltear and Cocytus—if you observe from a distance, Shalltear was more humanlike.
That and because if anything goes wrong then surely she of all people would be able to smash her way through any adversity.
And right now, Torihiki serves as the final voice of doubt against that decision, one delivered exactly before the moment of truth for maximum impact.
Will the vampire falter, or will she go forward?
Battling her inner turmoil, her answer was:
"I am thankful for your concern, Torihiki-sama, I do. And your worry undoubtedly came from a foresight which I will most likely never attain… But…"
Following her pause, Shalltear took several deep breaths. She seemed to be steeling her resolve and at the same time suppressing the uneasiness in her heart.
After one final deep breath, Shalltear faced Torihiki, who had patiently waited for her preparation, with a determined look.
"But, I firmly believe that I will manage. For the targets, they would turn into slaves after we suck their blood, so that would be much simpler. Momonga-sama and Kyoko-sama did state that there is no need to bring them back alive…"
By sucking all their blood, vampires could turn a target into a lower-tiered undead that was obedient towards their master. Vampires were only able to create lesser vampires with intelligence far below their own, but Shalltear could create vampires with intelligence on the level of a human.
Although there was a limit to how many vampires she could create, if dead or alive didn't matter, Shalltear could be considered an excellent hunter as well…
"As for the [Blood Frenzy]... I will suppress it! Without fail!"
Unlike her measures regarding the capture of her target, her justification for her conditions was much more far fetched in comparison. It looks like Shalltear was pivoting solely on willpower alone when it comes to that particular snag.
Will that be enough to
"...Alright, guess that's it then."
The skeletal psychopomp relaxed, pushing the others to do the same.
Shalltear herself was fighting a very strong urge to just melt and become one with her sitting spot, barely managing to stop herself because she knows that her mission has yet to even start and could begin any moment now.
Even if her hardest hurdles had been overcome. Because she knows nothing that comes next could rival the tribulation of earning a Supreme Beings' approval.
"Sorry about putting you on the spot like that. I bet I came off as paranoid didn't I?"
"O-of course not Torihiki-sama! If anything, I should feel honored that you would go out of your way to worry so much for but a simple servant like myself!"
"It's fine-it's fine. Anxiousness is a part of my character, so there's no need to feel bad or anything. Though, I really should trust my brother more. If he decided that you're fit for the job, then I suppose that's more than enough."
At that exact moment, there was a violent vibration from outside and a neigh from the horses pulling the carriage. Their ride seems to be stopping.
"Oro, It's time already? I guess time does fly by fast when you're having fun~"
"Then, Torihiki-sama, I'll be off."
Shalltear half bowed, as she prepares herself for her upcoming redemption.
"There's no need to rush. Solution and I are going to help out cleaning up the mess outside because of you know what. Why don't we save goodbye until after?"
"If that's the case, may I humbly offer myself to take point!?"
"Umu, that would be extremely helpful. After you then."
"Yes! Please watch over as I endeavor to meet your expectations!"
With determination to serve all of her lords and conquer her past shortcomings, The Bloody Valkyrie opened the door of their carriage and waltzed into the night.
