Chapter 2: Their First Not-So-Dramatic Meeting
Few days ago
Miura Yumiko was furious.
Today, she got a group assignment with the most unexpected person on her list. Honestly, she was surprised at how she managed to never know her assignment's partner until now, even though they both are surprisingly a seatmate.
And it was even more surprising that she don't know him at all even with the rumors and gossips about him running around the Sobu's first year. Well, no one had ever know his appearance in the first place, so it was justified.
Some people said he missed the opening ceremony because he got into a fight and was sent to hospital. Some said that he leeched a girl with his eyes which got him into an accident and went to the hospital. Some said he had brought a bike and got into a crash while speeding beyond limits. Some even said that he was a rapist who targeted young boy and got into a fight because he failed in doing his act.
Ok, that last part is actually pretty weird and questionable but the point is, there were a lot of question about this guy she was supposed to work together with.
All of the rumors regarding him always lead toward certain thing, and that's him being a dangerous person, creep or delinquent.
Surprisingly, she didn't take the rumors and gossip seriously. The fact that people don't even know how he looks like became a big factor of how ridiculous the gossip about this guy. Instead, she had even pitied and sympatized this guy she barely know anything.
But then she changes her mind once she met him.
She honestly doesn't know what to say about this... this... creature.
Only with his present alone was somehow enough to piss her off and he keep making her sanity drifting away for each passing second they were together. He was so gloomy that Yumiko herself began to feel so depressed around him. He also rarely talks about something like a loner he is, but once he began talk, he somehow always managed to tick her off and drive her nuts. And why did he seemed to always share the same thought with her? Not to mention the way his ahoge swaying around as if taunting her...
At least he was not like how the rumor described him but still, it was a wonder how she managed to hold the urge to kill this guy at the sight.
-oOo-
Ughhhh... I blamed that one girl who asked Hiratsuka-sensei about her boyfriend. And from where exactly did she think giving your own student a sudden out-of-nowhere test because personal grudge was a good idea!?
Finally reaching the school faculty after the boring and totally silence walk through the empty hallway, I opened the door and found Hiratsuka-sensei talking with a black haired boy. So that's the guy I supposed to work with? Anyway, what's up with that standing hair strand? Haha.. What the hell?
As I approached them in a bee-line, it seems they had managed to discover my presence on my way. I could finally see the guy's face and I felt my spine shivered.
His look was ok, well that's actually pretty above average but, what's up with his eyes? It somehow gave me such a creep in mysterious way.
It wasn't like that creepy look every single guy gives me when they're staring at me but it felt more mysterious than that. It was as if he looked at me, and what's deep inside me before trying to understand or decipher it. And when I look back at it, it was so dark as if I was staring at the abyss itself. It honestly felt... weird.
Caught off guard by him, I dumbly spaced out and only realized that when Hiratsuka-sensei called my name.
"...miura. Miura!" Good job, Yumiko...
As I gave her my attention, she raised her eyebrows from my earlier trance but luckily she seems to not asking about it. "Anyway, Miura, this is Hikigaya Hachiman he's the only one who will take the remedial assignment along with you because his absence due to certain reason like I jus explained."
His absence? So it's not just because I was being too bitchy and something that makes me completely ignore everything and everyone? Oh, thanks Kami. Wait, could you replay your explanation sensei? I'm kinda got lost in here...
Huh? Hikigaya Hachiman? So he's the one who became the topic of gossip for two weeks after the opening ceremony, huh.
At the first two weeks of the school, there were some rumors running around the first year of Soubu high about a guy who missed the opening ceremony and not yet attend the school for a week or more, well nobody ever know or just didn't care.
After all, the rumors were only used by them to socialize with other people and start a conversation. Honestly, it felt so disgusting seeing this people doing that. That's why I only hung out with one girl at the class even though there were a lot of cute girls to hang around.
Deciding to make up my initial slip and also because I felt sympathetic to this guy, I held up my hand. "Miura Yumiko, nice to meet you."
But instead of answering my handshake offer, he blinked confusedly as if he didn't understand something before furrowing slightly. He stayed unmoving for several seconds and makes my hand hanging dumbly in the air. Feeling my face warmed up in annoyance and embarrassment, I glared at him and pulled my hand back.
"Oi, don't you know you should answer back when someone introduced their name and give their hand to you!" My voice was heated, but I manage to tone it down so as not create a ruckus or disturb anyone, though the only people in the faculty were just me, Hiratsuka-sensei and this guy.
"Oh, sorry, I'm just surprised. It's just that, I never thought you could be pretty civil and not all bitchy." Wai, what?
"Hah? What are you talking about?"
"I mean could you blame me to say that after you just outright insulted me even though I brought you your dropped pen?" He said monotonously while crossing his hand in front of his chest.
"Wait, what? When?" Wait, I don't really act like a total bitch aren't I? "Ugh... now I know why everyone seemed to avoid me except for Hina..."
"Huh? You don't realize that until now? What are you dumb?" This guy...
"H-how am I supposed to know when no one had ever say that to me!?" Feeling frustrated, I finally yelled in indignation.
"That's why you should go talk with someone and not just focusing on your phone... Wait, why did I telling you this again?" The last part sounds more like he's talking to himself, but I still answered.
"Well, I don't know but look at you!" I pointed my finger accusingly, "telling me some advice like that as if you ever talk with someone else!" And I smiled smugly at his reaction.
"Hah? Oi, what the heck was that, you riajuu bitch?" He took a step forward, face contorted into deep frown while he looked down at me due to the height difference.
I flinched at the name call and how his void eyes staring down at mine, but I managed to dare myself and step forward, matching the intensity of his glare with mine. Though, I could feel my lips was trembling slightly, whether it's from fear or irritation, I'm not quite sure.
"Heh, looks like you need to examine your ears, creep." He flinched ever so slightly but still keeps his glare head on.
"Okay you two, stop right now." Suddenly, Hiratsuka-sense butted in and held her hand in front of us. Thanks god, I thought my legs would falter, he's too close to my liking, "I know the faculty right now is pretty much empty but that doesn't mean you could trash around here and cursing at each other like that."
I then averted my gaze away and shut my mouth up, which was also what he did. Somehow it pisses me that he did the same thing I did and he seems to share the same thought. We then silently began our stare off tournament with dislike clearly visible in our eyes, and only stopped when we heard Hiratsuka-sensei's sigh.
"I call you two here to give you an assignment, not playing cat and dog." Suddenly, a malicious grin that gives both of us a shiver down on our spine appeared on her face. Whatever thing she thought right now, I don't like where it's going to lead.
"All right, since you two was so hellbent at defeating each other." Wait, she just changed some fact on there didn't she? "Then I will need to change the assignment for something else."
"Following the law of the shounen manga, if two characters were butting their head and ready to rip each other throat, they need to be put in a situation or a challenge where they'll need to push beyond themselves to defeat each other."
Wait, wait, from where the hell did you managed to draw that kind of solution to defuse our conflict!? That's both stupid and ridiculous! Glancing at the asshole on my side, our eyes met and I could see that we shared the same thought that this woman has lost her mind. Somebody please marry her already.
"That being said, I will change the assignment into something much more fun." I would like to know what exactly the definition of fun in this madwoman's head for safety purpose, "the task was initially just a simple group project about something that I actually won't bother to read."
Pardon my French, but the fuck? Did she just admit about planning to slack off like that?
"Nah, I'm just joking and language please." Ow, shoot! "Anyway, your project right now will be named 'I Want to Know My Rival's Weakness and How to Utilize it'." Why did it sound like a horribly written romcom light novel that targeted some people who giggles at someone's misery? "which mean you do what exactly like that title explained.
I want you two to collect as much information about each other as possible, mundane or important thing, I don't really care. Just try to know each other better whether you gain it through a simple, friendly afternoon talk with a tea or by pure dirty method such as intimidation, stalking, blackmail or even interrogation.
The loser of this competition will follow whatever request the winner had given to them, in other word, the loser will be the slave and the winner will be the master."
Ok, how the fuck is this woman still had her teaching license? Looking at my so called 'rival', we once again shared the same thought through our terrified look. For two people who were supposed to hate each other, we seemed to share the same thought a lot of time, and it's genuinely pisses me for some reason although in this case, our shared horror was justified.
"And you can start by exchanging number and walk away from the school ground, you know, going on a date or something?" Was she out of her min- nevermind, she probably has loss it long tilme ago.
-oOo-
"Ok, so tell me why are we even agreeing with this in the first place?" I asked as I was sitting face to face with my supposed rival/partner in some random family restaurant we managed to found.
"If I'm being honest, something was telling me to not piss that woman and just go play along with her antic if I don't want to get physically harmed." Why are we sharing the same thought again?
Luckily, before I start to lash out at him for no apparent reason, the waiter gives us the menu box and when I opened it, my eyes was bulging wide And shone brightly.
How come I never know there's this restaurant with cheap food? That's heresy! Hopefully, their taste won't be as low as the price in here. After picking a rice, miso soup, grilled mackerel, stir fried vegetable and strawberry daifuku, I observed Hikigaya who seemed to brighten a bit when he opened the menu. So he can still feel happy huh.
Soon, we both waited the order in comfortable silence while watching the road through the glass beside us. Occasionally, a car or two would passes over in blurry light under the dark night that was decorated with the myriad of colorful luminescent light from the city's street. Now how did we even end up until night? I don't really know. We just keep our banter after Hiratsuka-sensei dismissed both of us and end up wandering around the city with no actual dirrection. Without our realizing until the sky became darker, we end up in here. Saizeriya is the name of this family restaurant if I remember correctly. Luckily, this is was near my apartment area so I wasn't lost too far from home.
Our peaceful and quiet reverie was stopped when we notice the waiter come to our table along with our respective order. Apparently, he went along with something similar to me with the exception he ordered beef teriyaki, tamagoyaki and bean sprout salad instead of mackerel and stir fried vegetable. Oh he also bought a cup of warm coffee too.
After clasping both of our hands together while muttering our silent gratitude, we began to eat the meal in silence. To be honest, it was quite surprising that we're able to be this peaceful around each other after what we had only do those past few hours. Maybe because he was too exhausted? No, I don't think so. Or is he just like this? I mean bipolar and stuff?
As I quietly glancing at him while questioning that stuff, he seemed to notice it pretty quickly as if he was aware I was looking at him in the first place. Now that was scary.
But instead of lashing out a jibe, he gently shoved his beef plate toward me as if he was offering me the teriyaki beef. I only looked at him in confusion, silently asking for an answer of whatever it's mean with his gesture.
Suddenly, he did reply to me by taking a chunk of my salad instead of using verbal communication.
"O-oi! What are you doing!?" He only raised his eyebrow.
"I thought you wanted to try my beef but too embarrassed to do that since you keep glancing at me. Anyway, the stir fried is pretty good."
"w-wha-"
"You don't want my beef? I thought you wanted to try it by exchange, so sorry if taking your salad upset you. Shame, the beef is actually pretty delicious y'know."
"w-wait!" I called him out before he manages to take the beef platter back to him. At least this little misunderstanding breaks out our awkward silence.
With that, I took some of his beef and eat it with my rice. It was really as good as my own mackerel honestly. I then nudged my grilled mackerel to him
"The beef's sweetness is really good if I would say and thanks anyway. I could also say the same about the mackerel, you should try it too."
"Sure." There was a pause as he tasted the grilled fish. He then give me his opinion and some personal information, "It's like what my sister always made, but it still nothing compared to hers."
"You're siscon aren't you?" I asked, genuinely surprised this kind of guy could be that affectionate.
"I just love my sister, is there's something wrong with that?" He gave me an offended half assed glare.
"How am I supposed to know when I don't have a sister in the first place?" Without both of us noticing, I took some of his salad while he also took some of mine. And soon enough, we then start to eat the side dishes without caring which of us actually ordered it with casual and warm atmosphere between us.
"Good point. Anyway, daifuku?" He shot me a glance then to the said dessert.
"I like it, so why?" My brows raised in question.
"Nah. I guess that counted as information huh." Wait a minute, he's right.
"Heh, so I will need to report that you're a siscon too huh." I quickly said before giggling at his annoyed face.
"Haaahhh, whatever." He then opened his cup of coffee and took a sip of it's contain before releasing a satisfied sigh. Somehow, hearing that felt a bit... tingling and weird?
"Anyway, why exactly you were absent from the school at the first day?" He blinked in confusion before a look of realization appeared on his face.
"Oh, I got caught in a car accident that day. When I went to school with my bike..." There was a pause on as if he was hesitating to say something. "I wasn't really focused at the road and then when I realized, a black car had already sent me flying over some feet away."
"O-oh, I'm sorry for making you remember that. But, it just that... I want to prove that those rumors weren't always true." I couldn't quite see his face since I looked toward my shoes.
But for some reason, I knew that he was flabbergasted.
"Why?"
"Well, you might never know about this, but because my mean and spoiled look, everyone always thought I was a bitch and spread some nasty rumors about me. I may seems strong, but it actually quite hurt and a bit lonely." Welp, stupid Yumiko, that pitiful back-story of yours bring back the awkward mood.
"O-oh, okay. Um, sorry, I guess." As I looked up in surprise, he paused before continuing what he would say, "I mean, I kinda thought you're really a bitch, so I was no different to them. At the very least, I should apologize to you since you bother yourself by telling me that."
"U-um, well... thanks, I guess...? Uhh, at least you did admit about that and apologize once knowing the truth, so it was better than doing nothing."
As we fell into another silence, we tried to ignore the sudden awkwardness by quietly ate our meal and relishing the various taste of our dinner. Not long after that, we finally finished and I had shared my daifuku to him, which despite his statement about free food, he seemed to look guilty.
We both then decided to share our pay equally as we ended up eating everything together before calling it a night. As soon as we walked out of the restaurant, the slightly chill air of the spring struck me and made me shiver a bit.
"Do you want me to walk you home?"
I need to take a double take to make sure what did I heard wasn't an illusion. Did he just offer to walk me home? Is he tsundere or something? Combination of kuudere and tsundere maybe?
"My mom and sister will kill me if I left a girl alone, especially at late night like this. So don't take it wrong." A tick mark appeared on my forehead as the thought of him just being a prideful liar who refuses to admit his obvious emotion crushed by his words.
"I should have know you will said that." Grumbling, I muttered that while pinching the bridge of my nose, trying to calm down my irritation. "Well, you don't need to do that though since my house is near."
As I finally softened down a bit, I held my hand up and look at his eyes straight, "see you, Hikigaya."
Surprise displayed on his face that had been basked with various colorful lights while his eyes widened slightly. I could see something ignited deep inside those cold, dark eyes before it ceased quickly.
But then, he seemingly lifts his arm hesitantly to reply my parting word and gesture. For some reason, the world seemingly stopped and my mind went blank when he uttered his words.
"See you... Miura"
We then parted our way toward each of our respective destination. But I still couldn't stop to wonder what that feeling was.
Unfortunately, that time was the only time I could peacefully talk with him since the next day, he went into some asshole mode. I just couldn't help but wonder whether or not that he would actually die if he ever tried to be nice. He was quite interesting if he's a bit nice, y'know.

The music part would appear a bit later than this, so if you asking for some music recommendation, you will need to wait man.
Hopefully, the fluff was sweet enough for you guys, but if it's not, you need to prepare yourself for the future chapter. Man, writing this fic make me all giddy and excited really. It's just cute and wholesome.
For those who asking how about my fic with title "From Miyu san to Hikio kun", I'm sorry to say that I abandoned it. It's simply kinda a failure in my opinion and whatever thing I do was not enough to salvvage it. The ideas I forced to fit into that story was just too much that I kinda got confused sometime. I hope this fic was enough for those who crave for HikiMiyu fic.
