Chapter 2
It was morning the next day, and all the pups were awakening from various dreams, although Rubble started to sleepwalk as a result of his dream. The pups tried to wake him up once they were all awake, but nothing worked, and so Chase took his megaphone and spoke into it. "Rubble! Wake up!" he called.
"Huh?" Rubble tripped over a tennis ball. "Whoops!" He shook his head to get himself awake as Rocky took off the blindfold he usually wore when going to sleep. "Uh, was I wandering?" he asked.
"You were sleepwalking, yes," Rocky replied.
"Then I hope I didn't miss breakfast!" Rubble chuckled as the others laughed.
"What were you dreaming about? Eating?" Skye giggled.
"Actually, I was, but I wasn't eating the usual kibble, or whatever," Rubble replied. "For some reason, I was dreaming of eating chili dogs."
"Chili dogs?" asked Chase.
"Yeah."
"Were you by yourself?"
"No. I was enjoying a day with that blue hedgehog that has the red and white shoes and can run really fast."
"Blue hedgehog that can run really fast?" Ryder put in, and then he thought for a moment before it dawned on him. "I think you mean Sonic the Hedgehog."
"Yeah; I guess. I must have been thinking about the last time he was here. He likes chili dogs."
"He does. I think you might want to cut down or change what you eat before bedtime."
"Uh, okay." Rubble chuckled nervously.
"However, it is funny you should mention Sonic." Ryder paused to clear his throat before revealing the big surprise.
"How so, Ryder?"
"You've all been such good pups, and I really appreciate the hard work you've done recently. Not just you pups, but also Everest, Tracker, Rex, and the twins. I think you've earned a vacation. But I wanted a new place to travel to, and I remembered that Sonic and his friends had visited Adventure Bay, but we haven't been to his hometown in this world."
"Where's that?" asked Rocky.
"Some place called Station Square. So get yourselves ready for a road trip, pups! Well, a trip, anyways. It's across the ocean. So let's get packing!
The pups howled with excitement as they began to pack for the trip. When that was finished, Ryder took out his pup-pad and slid the mechanism out to press the button he normally used to summon the pups in case of an emergency. "PAW Patrol, to the Air Patroller!"
"Ryder needs us!" the pups exclaimed in unison. They all ran to the Air Patroller, where, as always, Robo-Dog was the one driving. However, because Ryder and Robo-Dog (with Rocky's assistance) had made some modifications to the Air Patroller, it was now larger than it was before, although it had the same basic layout, in order to house other necessary modes of transport when needed, such as Rubble's construction rig, or even the Mighty Jet. (A previous incident where the Ladybird tried to take the whole meteor for herself resulted in the pups, as their anthro forms, working as the Mighty Pups, and it ended up using the Mighty Jet and the Air Patroller. But there was only one Robo-Dog, and so Rocky actually flew the Mighty Jet. This inspired Ryder to update the Air Patroller so that it could hold multiple modes of transport, including the jet. Note the pups also had all their other special jets from the time they battled the Duke of Flappington, but those were not in use here.)
As always seemed to be the case, the pups didn't make it to their destination without Marshall tripping and causing an accident. This time, however, he tripped over a bunch of tennis balls, and when he crashed on top of everybody, the tennis balls all bounced off his head. "Game, set, match!" he called, and everybody laughed at the joke.
Since they were on the Air Patroller, the pups found themselves in their air rescue suits, although it wasn't a mission. Chase still took the liberty of announcing, "PAW Patrol ready for action, Ryder, sir!"
"Thanks, pups!" Ryder replied. "Let's get ready to go to Station Square! We'll need to make some stops, though; I'm inviting some other pups to join us!" The Air Patroller took off.
Meanwhile, in Station Square, Team Chaotix mentioned to Sonic and the others that the PAW Patrol was on their way to visit. "Sorry it was such short notice," said Charmy, "but he thought it was the perfect time to do so."
"Hey; not a problem!" Sonic smiled. "I think it's a great idea to show them around. I just hope we can do it without Eggman showing his ugly face and crashing the party!"
"I wouldn't bet on that," Shadow cautioned. "They might have launched the Doctor all the way to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, but that's not a guarantee that he's not coming back."
"Fair point. However, don't forget that all those dogs are superheroes. They can kick butt!"
"They certainly can," said Knuckles, "and they demonstrated it the last time we visited Adventure Bay. That was a while back. They've battled Eggman with us, but I don't think we've experienced any of their enemies, like that crazy Humdinger guy. Then again, he's in jail."
"And he probably will be for the rest of his life unless he breaks out, but he wouldn't cooperate if he and Eggman teamed up," Tails put in. "They both want all the glory for themselves."
"Just like all supervillains we know."
"Exactly."
The Thorndyke family wasn't as familiar with the PAW Patrol as Sonic was since they had never traveled to Adventure Bay, but they had read all the stories in the papers. The difference now was that Chris was an adult, although in Sonic's original world, he still would have been a kid. (Due to the way time moved in the different universes, a month to Sonic was a year to Earth. This was why Chris, when he successfully teleported himself to Sonic's world, was 18 at the time, but ended up in his 12-year-old body. When he arrived back on Earth, he was 18 again. Now he was in his mid to upper 20s, and this time, not leaving Earth.)
"What made you decide to stay on this planet, by the way?" Chuck asked Sonic when he came by and sat down to rest for a moment. "I figured you had your own universe to protect."
"Originally, it was because Eggman used Chaos Control on us and sent us here once again," Sonic replied, "but this time, there's no threat of our two worlds merging as one and causing the destruction of, well, pretty much everything. I know you humans aren't happy with us invading your territory like this, allegedly, but Eggman's destroyed our planet and there's no way to get back, so we're stuck here. On the other hand, I didn't fall into the pool like last time."
"I'll never forget that day," Chris put in.
"I'll never forget it either," Ella, the maid, added herself. "I just wish you hadn't tried to hide it from the start." (Chris originally tried to hide Sonic from his family by sometimes having them pose as stuffed animals. However, one thing led to another, and eventually the beans were spilled when Cream lost her temper. Chris was forced to admit the truth, and the family eventually made amends with Team Sonic.) "In any case, who exactly is this PAW Patrol you talk about?"
"It will make more sense once you meet them, but to the best of our knowledge, here's what you need to know," Sonic replied, beginning to explain what the PAW Patrol was all about. The others chimed in when necessary, and the Thorndykes agreed that they also would have felt weirded out by the fact Mayor Goodway kept a chicken as a pet, frequently put her inside her purse, and even had a statue of her. "To be honest, I don't think that chicken pays attention to anything," Vector said, "but I feel it's best to just go with the flow. The moral of that story is you don't judge a book by its cover."
"Indeed," Chuck agreed. "But it's just the dogs and the boy coming, yes?"
"I think so. They had to cross the ocean, so they'll be flying their special aircraft if I am not mistaken."
"I think we can use the runway, then, just like we do when Tails flies his X-Tornado, or even the regular Tornado."
"Sounds good."
Meanwhile, the Air Patroller traveled to a few other stops to pick up the other pups, who eagerly accepted the invitations, finding the twins in a different part of Adventure Bay, going to the mountains to pick up Everest, and the jungle to find Tracker. In Rex's case, the pup went through a secret route to the Lookout, briefly transformed himself into a Mighty Pup (with Ryder's pup-pad's help), and then teleported into the Air Patroller, where he appeared as his regular self again. "Sorry; it was the fastest way here," he said.
"That's okay," said Chase. "We're just glad to have you aboard. I don't think the Air Patroller could fit into the Dino Wilds anyways."
"Nope," Ryder confirmed. "Only the Dino Patroller works if we're going to go there."
For Tracker, Rex, and the twins, it was the first time aboard the Air Patroller, although they had yet to use any special air rescue gear, but Ryder, Robo-Dog, and Rocky did create some for them just in case. (Everest already had gear of her own.) As soon as all the reserve pups were aboard, Ryder sprung the surprise on them, and each of them were just as excited.
To pass the time, Ryder allowed the pups to play a few rounds of "Pup Pup Boogie," which came with a new update so that the pups could dance to music associated with Sonic. Rex declined to participate, but he still enjoyed watching the other pups have a go at their favorite game.
