NOTE: Had time to write this chapter! I'm so freaking happy that people are loving this fic! I'm doing my best to not disappoint you guys. Also, writing Loid/Twilight is HARD. There's so much about him that almost makes most interactions that aren't Anya and Yor difficult to write. Hopefully, I've been doing him justice up to this point.
Due to Capsule Corp, technology for the Spy x Family cast is very up to date. So, that's why Yor and Loid have cell phones.
I wanted to ask you guys which Dragon Ball character do you guys think the Spy x Family cast would get along with the most? I personally think that Yor and Goku would be best friends. It wouldn't take much for the two of them to get along.
Enjoy and Review!
Chapter 3: Spy x Scholar
Piccolo touched down on the Lookout, his orange shoes tapping against the tiled floors like a clicker. Sitting at a table placed in the middle of the sanctuary was the current Guardian of Earth, Dende, a Namekian just like Piccolo. Across from him was his attendant Mr. Popo. The two were simply enjoying their day as they drank tea. Dende's head snapped over to Piccolo after hearing his arrival. "Piccolo! What brings you here today? Hopefully nothing bad like last time."
"At best this is just me being overly cautious, but after all that's happened recently, I want to be sure nothing from our past is coming back to haunt us again." Piccolo replied. The older Namekian's words made both Guardian and attendant stand up from the table.
"What do you mean, Piccolo?" Dende asked.
"A kid at Pan's new school asked about seeing Gohan a few days ago."
"Seems normal. If they're friends, then it would make sense to want to know more about each other's families." Dende said.
"Under normal circumstances I wouldn't have thought much of it either, the issue is that the kid specifically brought up meeting Gohan without Pan ever mentioning him on the day they first met. From what Pan told me this girl named Anya Forger was really passionate about the idea of meeting a superhero, because her father is like a spy." Piccolo explained. Still his words didn't string much of a cord with the two.
"I still don't see your point, Piccolo. You think this Anya's father is a spy?" Dende asked.
"While the possibility is on my mind, I'm more focused on Anya's possible situation. Pan said that the conversation felt weird to her, because it was almost like Anya could read her mind."
"Read her mind…" Mr. Popo hummed. "You believe that Anya is telepathic?"
Piccolo nodded his head. "Back when I infiltrated the Red Ribbon's base, I had found some files about children who were being experimented on."
"Like, 17 and 18?" Dende gasped.
"Yes, but I don't think it was to the extent that Gero took with those two. Seems like that operation was shut down due to a freak incident releasing all of the children. One of those files mentioned telepathic abilities." Piccolo explained.
Dende nodded his head, feeling a little nervous himself. "If what you're saying is right, then it's possible that Anya Forger was experimented on and given those abilities. But do you think she'd be on the Red Ribbon's side after what they did to her?"
"I don't know and that's why I'm here. I want to be sure that we don't have another crisis on our hands." Piccolo said.
Dende understood the situation. "Where does Pan go to school now?"
"In one of the nearby countries, Ostiana."
Dende walked over to the edge of the Lookout and glanced down at the Earth below. Years of being the Guardian and the teachings from Mr. Popo had helped him refine his abilities to monitor the planet.
"Ostiana… what a troubled country." Mr. Popo sighed.
"It is, which is why I was hesitant about Gohan and Videl's agreement with moving over there for Pan's schooling. Ostiana and Westalis have been enemies for years, a feeble excuse of a peace treaty is the only thing holding back another war." Memories of Kami's time as Guardian resurfaced through Piccolo's mind. Of all the horrific events between the two raging countries, there was a time that Kami was tempted to request the Z-Fighters to get involved, but then stopped himself.
Having them get involved would've just made the situation worse than improve it. Revealing seemingly God-like beings capable of extraordinary abilities would've just made them tools to corrupt governments. Which is why Kami manipulated the memories of the Earthlings to keep Goku hidden after he defeated King Piccolo. Had the two countries been aware of the individual that had put an end to such a great threat at the time, nothing would've stopped them from trying to get their hands on him. All the old Guardian at the time could do was watch over both countries and the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for their countries.
"And even still now there's the potential of another war between them breaking out. Even after all that's happened on the Earth, some of these humans are too selfish to listen." Piccolo knew that not all humans were to blame, but the ones in power were the ones who angered him the most. Their actions had consequences to the people they're supposed to be protecting, but only care about protecting their status and money.
Dende snapped his eyes open. "I found her. But don't scare her or her family, Piccolo. At best she's just a little girl who wants to live a happy life."
Piccolo nodded his head as Dende gave him the telepathic coordinates. "I know. At best it'll be like the Gammas, or not at all." Piccolo took off from the Lookout and descended back towards the Earth.
Loid took his assigned seat in the auditorium, dressed in his usual suit, awaiting the beginning of the conference. Upon request, Wise had managed to get him a credible access to the university conference that Son Gohan would be presenting his research. When his Handler had asked him why he would waste valuable time going to this when he could be furthering Operation Strix, it took an hour of agreeing to take on more missions for her to approve it.
"...All for the mission…" Loid groaned in his head. He was praying that this Son Gohan was truly worth the tons of stress that was awaiting him the next couple of weeks. Not only that, but Anya had a test coming up and he wasn't sure if his heart could take another hit.
More people entered the auditorium, filling every seat. The lights inside of the auditorium dimmed once everyone was seated and the doors were closed. A single man walked onto the stage, giving a debrief of the speakers they would be hearing from for the next few hours. Luckily, for Loid, Son Gohan would be the first presenter of the day. The announcer walked away from the podium as his target finally took the stage. Loid took in every detail of Gohan's appearance.
What struck out the most was the man's wild spiky hair, though he had seen that in the photo from the files Franky had given him, it was still a surprise to see in person. How exactly did someone walk around with hair like that every day? Wouldn't it be better to straighten it out?
Next was Gohan's attire, which looked a lot more appropriate for the occasion. A simple black suit with a black tie around his neck. His face was adorned by a pair of black square glasses. Even with his untamed hair Son Gohan still managed to hold an air of professionalism-
THUD!
Loid visibly reacted to the sight of Son Gohan tripping over his own feet before he could even reach the podium. The scholar quickly picked himself up from the floor, laughing at himself. Even some of the audience joined in laughing, since Gohan's accident had loosened up the tense atmosphere in the audience. Loid was surprised to see how quickly the air had changed, because most wouldn't expect such a serious venue to be as open about accidents happening. But it seemed like Son Gohan had some ability to lighten up the people around him.
Once he recollected himself, Son Gohan began his presentation on the newest evolution of insects. Loid found himself engrossed in the discussion and topic. While the spy never found himself interested in insects other than when he was a boy, it was interesting to learn more about their development stages and growth. In some areas it even seemed similar to humans and animals but remaining unique to themselves.
Though, there was something that caught Loid's eye and it was when Gohan brought up these "Golden" states that bugs began to undergo. Within Gohan's eyes there was a small look of familiarity and nostalgia that had passed through the scholar's eyes.
"Perhaps he has some personal connection with these insects, or could there be even more?" Loid silently hummed in his mind. Whatever it was that had Gohan's interest wasn't important to his overall goal. He had a good idea of Son Gohan's character from this presentation, but now he needed to get a bit closer.
Gohan stretched his limbs as the conference finally came to an end. It was his fourth one this week and he was starting to feel mental exhaustion from back-to-back conferences. While he loved going to them and participating, the stuffy air from all the businesspeople and elites was suffocating at times. He knew full well why his dad and friends didn't like going to them. Bulma had told him that she didn't go to most of the business meetings or conferences she was supposed to attend.
But she was Bulma Briefs, who was going to tell her otherwise? It wasn't something Gohan had much of a choice in.
As he prepared to leave the building, he felt a barely concealed presence following him closely. Gohan stopped and turned around, finding Loid walking a few steps behind him. "Uh… can I help you, sir?"
"He noticed me?" Loid kept his face neutral, but in his mind he was shocked. He knew that Gohan's father had a martial arts background; nothing in the scholar's personal files had mentioned any sort of training whatsoever. "Maybe, I am getting sloppy." Loid shook the thought away and focused on Gohan. "Sorry, Mr. Son. I just wanted to catch up with you before you left. You see, I was fascinated by your talk about the evolutionary process of insects and wanted to learn more about it." If Loid expected anything from his lie, it wasn't Gohan's face brightening like a new day's sun. In fact, the scholar's face was almost blindingly bright.
It reminded him of both Anya and Yor. Two bright rays of light that had snuck their way into his dark abyss of a world.
"Of course! I'd be happy to talk about it more with you! Finally, someone who is just as passionate about my research as I am! You have no idea how difficult it is to explain these things to my friends and family. It kinda goes over their heads!" Gohan began to ramble excitedly until he remembered something. "O-oh, right! I never exactly caught your name. Sorry, you already know who I am, and I started talking about myself." Gohan scratched the back of his head, laughing nervously.
Loid couldn't help but find himself smiling at Gohan. The scholar wore his heart on his sleeve and was so open with people he just met. He really reminded Loid of Yor in many aspects. "It's fine, Mr. Son. My name is Loid Forger." Loid held out his hand.
Gohan took his hand. "Forger? Where have I heard that before?" Gohan tried to think back.
"I would assume your daughter mentioned it, because she and my daughter Anya became fast friends."
"Ah! That's right! I was so focused on finishing my paper that I must've forgotten. Pan also talks pretty fast when she's excited about something." Gohan smiled warmly as he thought of his daughter.
"Anya is the same way. Sometimes it feels like she's talking about things that barely make any sense." Loid related as he thought of Anya. "In fact I wanted to ask if you and your family wouldn't mind having dinner with us. We could talk about your research then and other things then."
Gohan was surprised by Loid's invitation. The only times he was ever invited over to someone else's was when their group was having a gathering, and it was usually at Bulma's. Any other times were few and it was either Sharpener or Erasa inviting them over. So, for him to already be invited for dinner after moving into the city sounded nice.
His mom always told him to be kind to neighbors.
"Sure! We'd love to!" Gohan accepted the offer.
"Really!?" Yor gasped as she dried the dishes. The city hall employee placed the clean plate into the cabinet as Loid handed her another clean plate.
"Yes. I met with Mr. Son earlier today and he agreed to having dinner with us this weekend. I figured it would be a good chance for us to get to know them better since you befriended his wife the other day and Anya met Ms. Pan." Loid explained.
Yor smiled excitedly. "I think it's a wonderful idea! It gives me a chance to try out my cooking again! I'll do my best to make a good impression!" Yor's face was determined, steaming coming out of her nostrils.
Loid could feel his stomach cramping from the prospect of Yor's cooking, but he couldn't find the strength within him to say no to her. He'll just have to prepare a back-up meal.
Anya perked up after hearing their conversation. "Anya can't wait to see Pan again! And to see Pan's papa and papa face-off!" Anya giggled in her head.
"I'm sure Pan can't wait to see you again, Ms. Anya!" Yor giggled.
Loid smiled down at her as well. "If all things go well, then our relationship with the Sons should help boost us in social status and bring me one step closer to finishing Operation Strix."
Anya gasped as she read his mind. She had completely forgotten that Pan's family was famous for…uh…she didn't quite remember why, but it was important! Turning to Bond, Anya had him follow her to the living room. "Bond! Show Anya what the dinner will be like! This has to be purfect!" Anya whispered.
Bond blinked at her before closing his eyes. "Woof!"
Towering over her was a tall green man dressed in a purple GI and white cape and white turban on his head. His eyes were peering down at Anya as if he could see right through her.
"AAHHH!" Anya jumped back in fright. Her parents were alarmed by her scream and rushed over to her side; Bond was also nuzzling into her face to calm her down.
"Ms. Anya!"
"Anya! What's wrong?" Loid asked, kneeling down to her.
Anya quickly regained her senses. "N-nothing! A-Anya just saw a bug!"
"A bug!?" Yor screamed, scanning the living room floor, standing closer to Loid than she had previously. Loid shook his head and searched around for the bug that Anya had seen.
Anya just sat in her spot, confused and a bit frightened by the vision that Bond had shown her. Just who was that green guy and what did he want from her?
"W-what if he's with those scientists from that lab!? W-what if he's coming to take Anya back!? Anya can't go back!" Anya frowned, growing determined. "Anya knows that Papa and Mama will protect her! She'll be safe as long as she sticks with them! That dumb green guy won't know what hit him!"
"ACHOO!" Piccolo sneezed.
"Are you okay, Mr. Piccolo?" Pan asked as she sat on his lap. The two were watching television. Piccolo had arrived a few hours ago to the Son's new home.
"I'm fine, Pan."
"Are you getting sick?"
"I don't get sick."
"Then perhaps someone is talking about you!"
"That isn't real, Pan." Piccolo responded.
"Nuh uh! Anya said that's what happens! Grandpa told me the same thing too!" Pan argued.
"Which Grandpa?"
"Grandpa Goku."
"Don't take anything he says seriously."
While the two of them conversed, Gohan and Videl were in the kitchen preparing dinner. "Are you sure it's a good idea to bring Piccolo to dinner with the Forgers this weekend?" Videl asked.
"Yeah, why not?" Gohan asked.
She gave him a flat look. "Should I really have to explain that to you?"
Gohan chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his head. "N-no, I get it. It's just that Piccolo isn't that bad-"
"He killed your dad, left you in a forest at the age of four, and his father almost subjugated the planet."
"Yeah, but that was a long time ago!"
Videl sighed. "I know, but other people aren't used to all of the craziness that we're used to. I don't want them to be scared of us or for Pan to lose a friend."
"I understand, Videl. But I'm sure being friends with Pan would've led to them meeting Piccolo at some point. Why not let it be now?" Gohan closed the distance between them. "I promise that everything will be just fine." He kissed her lightly on the lips.
Videl smiled softly, returning the kiss. "Fine, you win. We'll bring him with us, but if anything goes wrong then it's on you."
Gohan nodded his head. "I promise that everything will go just fine!"
Chapter End
NOTE: Anya is not a cyborg, she was given her powers by the R&R's experiments. The scientists were not given the chance to go as far with their plans as Gero did with 17 and 18.
Being Kami must really suck, because all he could do was watch humans rage war with one another and never actually intervene to stop it. He considered having the Z-Fighters get involved but realized that would've just brought unnecessary attention to them and make things worse. Imagine some corrupt government trying to control Vegeta... yeah it wouldn't end well at all.
Originally, I was going to have Piccolo go straight to the Forgers' home but decided that him being at the dinner will be way funnier.
Gohan is a cinnamon roll that we all love.
