Chapter 6
It had been a fun vacation for the pups, getting to know Station Square, and hanging out with their new best friends, it seemed. It was also surprising to Sonic and company that while the PAW Patrol and Adventure Bay had never met the Biker Mice from Mars or the SWAT Kats, for example, they were aware of who those groups were and what they did to protect the world from evil. (Sonic had met both groups, and his first impression was that both could be a bit reckless at times. However, at this point, most of their main recurring enemies had either died or repented of their sins and made a full U-turn.) "I guess they've had no reasons to visit Adventure Bay," Ryder commented, "but I hope we never see those crazy Plutarkians if nobody else. Do they really smell that bad?"
"I'm afraid so," Knuckles replied. "They're in violation of their own laws and regulations if they do take baths."
"I had always hated baths myself, but for an entirely different reason," Rocky commented, getting giggles from the other pups."
The next morning was the planned morning that the PAW Patrol was going to depart and head back to Adventure Bay, but before they could get themselves ready to go, SSTV News caught sight of Eggman approaching. Alarms went off, and everybody ran to hide. Eggman's plan of attack included a city-wide power shortage, and hacking into various computer systems used by banks. As usual, the military sent its forces to repel him, and as usual, it seemed they always ended up feeling useless, even though they were giving their lives for a good cause. This was due to the fact Eggman sent guided missiles back at the Air Force pilots that were chasing him, and shot them all down, sending them all to their deaths.
Since history has a tendency to repeat itself, Eggman said the same thing he said on several previous occasions where he had done this. "HA! How do you like them apples? You foolish flyboys thought you could pull one over on the good doctor, didn't you? Well, I guess the bad doctor proved you wrong!"
"Oh, no; not good!" Skye winced as she looked at the action through her goggles. "Ryder! Sonic! I think that's Dr. Eggman! He just shot down a bunch of pilots!"
"I knew we hadn't seen the last of him!" Sonic replied. "Let's go, team!" Off he ran to save the day, with Shadow racing alongside him, while several of the others boarded Tails's famous jet, the X-Tornado, and flew off to save the day.
"Eggman's back? That must be why the power went out," Rex put in.
"Oy-oy-oy!" Tracker winced. "Does that madman have no heart?"
"What else would we expect from a mad scientist like him?" Tuck commented. "In any event, this looks like a job for..."
The pups all imitated a trumpet in unison playing the "Charge!" call used at sporting events these days (and previously used as a military bugle call), and then cheered, "The Mighty Pups!"
"I couldn't have said it better myself," Ryder chuckled, taking his pup-pad and switching the logo to the Mighty Pups logo. "Mighty Pups, to the Air Patroller!"
"Ryder needs us!" the pups exclaimed as they ran to the Air Patroller, although expecting Marshall to crash and burn, creating another wipeout. But this time, it didn't happen; instead, Marshall chose to enter using a Pup-Fu move. "Hey; this is so weird!" Rocky put in. "We're all still standing!"
"Marshall, you didn't crash for once?" Rubble asked.
Marshall continued holding the poses before finally losing his balance and dropping to the floor. "Oh, you almost had it!" Chase said as he got back up.
"Guess I win the gold medal for crashing and burning!" Marshall replied, and everybody laughed before barking themselves into their Mighty Pup forms, and to be on the safe side, they also barked up their anthro forms. They were now the AMPs, or Anthro Mighty Pups. "Mighty Pups are ready for mighty action, Ryder, sir!" Chase called as they took their positions on the Air Patroller, and their hands all glowed the matching color of their uniforms.
"But you don't have your mighty jetpack," Zuma added. "Oh, wait; you have the other one." Indeed, Ryder was wearing his white flight suit he wore on regular air rescues since he didn't have the one he usually wore when his loyal dogs fought as the Mighty Pups.
"That's okay, pups," Ryder replied. "I can learn from the mistake and bring it with me next time. Meanwhile, this is urgent." He brought up the scene on the screen with his pup-pad. "As you know, Dr. Eggman has returned to launch an assault on Station Square, and we have to help Sonic and the gang stop him. The power has gone out, and I think he's trying to steal everybody's money for himself as well. So for this mission, I think everybody had better charge up!"
"Totally on it, dude!" Zuma smiled.
"On the double!" Rubble echoed, and all the pups touched hands so that they could charge up and level up their abilities.
"Okay. Now let's use your mighty powers to help our friends." He gave instructions to each of the pups, and each one gave the appropriate response, such as Rubble saying, "Mighty Rubble's ready for trouble!" Some of them ended up making up new catchphrases on the spot, whether they were permanent or just temporary. Rex, for instance, referenced his teleporting abilities by stating, "I'll be there in a flash!" Tracker just used his regular catchphrase, however. "I'm all ears; soy todo oídos."
"All right! Mighty Pups are on a roll!" Ryder called as the pups took to the skies, since they could all fly like Apollo the Super-Pup. The 10-year-old boy then said to his faithful robot assistant, "Hit it!"
"Arf, arf!" Robo-Dog barked as he pushed an ejection button, which launched Ryder into the skies, prompting him to yell, "Jets!" Soon he was flying alongside the Mighty Pups.
Because the power was out, there was no point of SSTV News trying to broadcast what Eggman was doing, but they were the first to notice that the Mighty Pups were fighting alongside Sonic and his friends. "Aren't those the same ones we interviewed yesterday," one of the camera operators asked.
"I think it is," said Scarlet, "but they look different. Well, no point in trying to figure it out. Let's just watch what they do here so that when the power comes back on, we can report what happened as it happened."
"Got it."
"Man, they're packing a lot of firepower!" Sonic commented as he and Shadow jumped off the X-Tornado (where they had been wing walking as they always did), and began to destroy the robots serving Eggman that took the form of fighter jets. "Doesn't matter if they can't land their shots, though!"
"Just don't let their shots hit us, or those dogs!" Shadow spoke up.
At that point, the Mighty Pups made their presence known, and Chase took the liberty of announcing, "Have no fear; the Mighty Pups are here!"
"I didn't know you could also fly," Skye said to Silver. (Tails was flying the plane, with Amy, Blaze, and Chris inside. Cream used her giant ears, and her pet chao, Cheese, was with her all the way, while Silver used his own powers.)
"Yes, I can," Silver replied. "You ready to do this?"
"This Mighty Puppy's going for a spin!"
"Excellent!" The two charged off towards another squadron of robots, and Skye used her whirlwind powers to shake them up while Silver took charge with his psychokinesis. Skye also demonstrated how she could control the weather, and the rainstorm that she summoned made it difficult for Eggman to focus on what he was doing.
Meanwhile, Sonic took to the ground to run at super speed, and Chase decided to follow his lead. "Ready for a rematch?" the hedgehog smirked, referencing the last time the two had a race, which ended in a tie.
"Mighty Chase is ready to race!" the heroic police pup replied, and the two took off at high speed, destroying every robot that came their way.
"Drat!" Eggman screamed. "Will you annoying dogs go back to the dog pound you came from?" On and on he went with his assault, but for every attack he had, the others had a counterattack. Marshall worked with Everest to keep a balance, since he had heat powers and she had ice powers. Note she used a combination of her super breath, summoning ice from her paws, and from her snowcat, while his super paws and his heat vision brought the hot temperatures. In most cases, he first made it too hot for the robots to handle, and then she cooled things down so that there would be no further damage to the city. Any damage that was caused was Eggman's doing.
If there was any consolation, it was the fact there was just one Chaos Emerald present on Eggman's side, because Tails had gathered four of them and used them to power the X-Tornado. Two of the the other three, however, were still on the loose, and regardless of what anybody else might have thought they could do with them, Sonic and his friends were the only ones worthy of using them.
The battle took the whole force away from Station Square and into Mystic Ruin, which the pups had not been to, but since they had Tracker, he put his super-hearing to good use. Being a Mighty Pup, however, meant the hearing was ten times as good as it was when he was a normal pup, but it was super-hearing nonetheless. It enabled him to lead the way as the others continued fighting off the robots.
Eventually the battle took everybody to where Eggman once held his infamous Egg Carrier that Sonic famously battled him on when the spirit of Tikal guided him to defeat Perfect Chaos as Super Sonic. "This is where he once hid his Egg Carrier until it was time to attack," Amy explained as she and the others told the story of their famous adventure while continuing to battle Eggman in the present.
"Sounds like you've had a lot of rough times with him, then," said Ella as she grew to the size of a giant, while Tuck begin to shrink to the size of an atom. "Meanwhile, it's time to think BIG!"
"Whoa! What happened to your twin brother?"
"He's right on my nose."
"Oh, he is?" Amy took out a pair of binoculars so she could see that Tuck had indeed gone down to atom size. "Oh, wow! Those are your superpowers."
"Yep!"
"Mighty and small, I'll give it my all!" Tuck cheered as Ella launched him towards Eggman's Eggmobile.
Ryder watched from the goggles on his flight suit. "It looks like you're almost there, Tuck," he called. "Let me zoom in." He did so, and could see Tuck flying towards the despised Doctor. Once the pup landed on the vehicle, he found a way to get inside the machinery's parts and tear it apart with his own super strength. The resulting chaos led Eggman's Eggmobile to suddenly malfunction.
"GAH!" he screamed. "What's going on here? Why have I lost control?!" He tried steering his vehicle so it would go where he wanted, but he ended up flying right towards Ella. "AUGH!" he screamed. "A GIANT DOG!"
"THAT'S RIGHT!" Ella shouted back. "I'M A MIGHTY PUP!" The other pups then appeared from behind her, and Ryder added, "And the town of Station Square is not yours to terrorize!" All the while, Tuck had come across the Chaos Emerald in question, not knowing what it was. But he still decided to grab it. Then he grew back to normal size as he threw it towards Sonic.
"Hey, Sonic! Catch!" he called.
"AUGH!" Eggman screamed again. "MY EMERALD!"
"Whoa; that's a Chaos Emerald!" Knuckles exclaimed.
"Got it!" Sonic yelled as he grabbed the Emerald. "Nice work, Tuck!" He then used the Emerald's power to charge up himself (pun not intended), and then he went into one of his signature spin moves and headed right for Eggman, who was still struggling to get his vehicle under control. Yet he was not able to escape the hedgehog in time, who got right to work blowing a hole in his vehicle, forcing the hated mad scientist to eject. Before he hit the ground, however, Chase, Marshall, Tracker and Zuma each let out a sonic bark that sent him flying towards the heavens. (As Mighty Pups in their anthro forms, all of the main pups had the ability to do the sonic bark.) Rex then summoned holographic images to fool Eggman, letting him think he could grab on to something solid, only to discover it was a mirage.
"I PROMISE YOU I WILL BE BACK! YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS!" he screamed as he traveled upwards.
"Knowing you, Doctor, you will be back," Shadow replied. "But nothing you do ever works, so why bother?"
"I HATE THAT HEDGEHOG!" Eggman continued creaming.
By the time Eggman landed, he was back where he started, but he was too tired and too weak to continue. His mood was so bad, Orbot and Cubot were afraid to get near him. "Whoa; not one of my better landings!" he said. "If it's the last thing I do, I will eradicate that hedgehog and his pesky friends! This now includes those dogs!"
Back in Mystic Ruin, all the pups were howling to celebrate their victory while Sonic's team cheered and alternated between high-fiving and fist-bumping one another. Then they returned to Station Square, where the people were willing to greet them and congratulate them; yet it seemed there was no joy because everybody was recovering from the attack. The mayor of Station Square was the first to congratulate them, and said to Ryder and the pups, "I hope you'll come back and see us again; I'm sorry your vacation had to end like this. I think I can see why you are so beloved back in Adventure Bay."
"Not a problem, sir," Ryder replied. "Whenever Dr. Eggman and his robots rampage through your town, just yelp for help!"
"You dogs are more amazing then I could imagine," said Nelson. "I'm grateful we have Sonic, but given the circumstances, this one wouldn't have worked without you."
"I have to second him on that," Scarlet put in. "The power's gone out, so we couldn't broadcast any of the action. I think our newspapers will have to do the job."
"Now let's get working on the repairs," Rocky called. "Ruff! Energy tools!" He summoned his energy tools and began to assist the construction and cleanup crews with moving debris out of the way.
"Whoa; how did you do that?" one crew worker asked.
"Special effects!" Rocky replied, and the others chuckled at his joke. "No, actually, it's one of my superpowers." The other pups immediately joined in.
"What good pups!" Ryder smiled.
By the next morning, the power was back on, and most of the repairs were finished, though not all of them. "We thank you for your help, but I think we got it from here," the mayor said as he continued to supervise the clean-up.
SSTV News did one last interview with Ryder and the pups, still appearing as the Mighty Pups, before they all boarded the Air Patroller to head back to Adventure Bay. As they took off, the crowds cheered and waved goodbye for them, and Sonic gave them a big thumbs-up, while Tails and Shadow gave them the military salute.
"Head for Adventure Bay, Robo-Dog!" Ryder said to his faithful robot assistant.
"Arf, arf!" Robo-Dog barked, and the aircraft took off and headed for home.
"And so," Scarlet concluded, "Station Square can rest and breathe easy again, thanks to our heroic team of superstars led by the two blue stars themselves, one being the Mighty Pups' Mighty Chase, and the other, of course, being Sonic the Hedgehog. Scarlet Garcia, SSTV News."
Upon arriving home, Mayor Goodway was the first to welcome them back, even though they got right to work, considering she lost Chickaletta (again), but it turned out the chicken had just gone to Yumi's farm (again). The pups hadn't changed out of their Mighty Pup forms yet, but they decided to continue being those in order to speed up the chores.
Eventually, they were able to get a good night's sleep, having enjoyed their vacation that turned into an adventure.
The next day, Everest, Tracker, and the twins got their first ride in the Dino Patroller as the group drove to the Dino Wilds in order to take Rex home. While there, they got to experience the lost world of dinosaurs, and Ryder took some photos to send to Jake and Carlos; otherwise they wouldn't have believed it.
"I thought those went extinct a long time ago," Jake commented when Everest had returned home from the trip as they looked at the photos.
"Nope; they still exist, but just in that part of the world," the husky replied. "It also helps that Rex can speak dinosaur."
Carlos had the same reaction. "I think I've dug up a few dinosaur fossils in my time," he said, "but I had no idea they were still around."
"Si; they are," said Tracker, "but they don't generally leave their domain. Por lo general, no abandonan su dominio."
"I see. Well, I'd better get digging. There's a few more relics in the monkey temple the museum wants. Can you help?"
"¡Por supuesto! Of course!" Carlos put his helmet on, and the pair boarded Tracker's jeep and headed for the monkey temple.
Meanwhile, Sonic and his friends, as Sonic JAM, began working on a new song that would pay homage to the PAW Patrol.
