Percy was nothing if not stubborn- which was the only reason why Carter had agreed to let her come on the mission to the Brooklyn Museum, though it had helped that Sally had been gone for a few days- Percy was curious about that- her mom had been going out more often- ever since the day Percy and Sadie had dyed their hair- she seemed distracted. Percy didn't like it but there wasn't much she could do- and Carter and Sadie were worried too she was sure. And they knew that Percy wanted a distraction, which was why she was on the six man team one baboon team- the youngest member.
The first stage of the plan hadn't gone too badly wrong, they'd managed to make it to the roof of the Brooklyn Museum- while Walt and Jaz- two of their trainees- and Percy loved that fact-they had trainees now, had gone with Zia to open the side window.
The three Kane's mission was to sort out their exit strategy. Which was their first hurdle.
They were stood by the big glass dome in the middle of the roof- they had planned on opening it up and using it to get the statue, which Horus had told them they needed, out.
The big problem was the fact that the museum was supposed to be closed. Instead the glass dome was glowing with light and inside, forty feet below hundreds of people in tuxedos and evening gowns were mingling, glancing in a ballroom the size of an airplane hanger. And Percy could see an orchestra playing inside too.
"You said the museum would be empty." Carter complained- and Percy turned her head to look at him, he was trying to talk to Sadie- who was bobbing her head and humming along to her music with her earbuds in- she didn't respond until Carter pulled them out and repeated his question- and she pulled a face when he did.
"Well it was supposed to be empty." Sadie looked through the dome, "The Web site said it closed at five. How was I supposed to know that there'd be a wedding?"
And Percy looked down again, and yep, yep Sadie was right, some of the ladies wore peach-colored bridesmaid dresses. One of the tables had a massive tiered white cake. Two separate mobs of guests had lifted the bride and groom on chairs and were carrying them through the room while their friends swirled around them, dancing and clapping. The whole thing looked like a head-on furniture collision waiting to happen. Which Percy thought would be pretty entertaining.
Sadly she decided it probably wouldn't after a moment and she glanced over towards Khufu when he tapped on the glass- he looked weird in his black clothing- which matched all of their clothing. "Agh!" he grunted, and Percy nodded at that, she wasn't exactly sure what he meant but she'd gotten somewhat used to interpreting what he was saying- as had Sadie.
"He's right." the older girl spoke up, "We'll have a hard time sneaking out through the party. Perhaps if we pretend we're a maintenance crew-"
"Sure." Carter scoffed, "Excuse us, six kids coming through with a three-ton statue. Just going to float it up through the roof, don't mind us."
"I think we'd make a great maintenance crew-"
"Damn straight we would." Sadie shot Percy a grin as she pulled out her wand and pointed it at the base of the dome. A golden hieroglyph blazed and the last padlock popped open. Then Sadie glanced at Carter, "If we're not going to use this as an exit then why am I opening it? Couldn't we just get out the way that we're going in? Through that side window?"
"I told you." Carter sighed, "The statue is huge. It won't fit through the side window. Plus, the traps..."
"Yeah, they're pretty nasty." Percy pulled a face, "Let's not set those off please."
"Then why don't we try again tomorrow night? I know we're on a deadline but one night won't hurt-"
"No." Carter shook his head. "Tomorrow the whole exhibit is being boxed up and shipped off on tour."
"Oh." Pecy blinked, "We only have on chance then. We gotta make it work I guess."
"Maybe-" Sadie's voice was annoyed, "If someone had given us more notice that we needed to steal this statue-"
"Forget it." Carter pulled a face, "You know how Horus is. He only told me this morning. It's not my fault."
"Next time we see him I'll yell at him for you." Percy told Carter, a serious expression on her face- which made him smile slightly.
"I'm sure he'd be terrified- don't look at me like that I'm serious, you're a nightmare when you're riled."
"Darn straight I am." Percy huffed the words. "So, what do we do then?"
"We have to stick to the plan." Sadie decided, "Go in through the side window, find the statue and float it out through the ballroom. We'll figure out how to deal with the wedding party when we get that far. Maybe create a diversion."
Carter's lips twitched, "Oh wow. You actually want to follow the plan-"
"Shut up Carter. Just because it's more fun to just storm in and blow stuff up doesn't mean that I'm not capable of following plans. That would be Percy."
And Percy grinned, giving a mock bow. "It's true." she declared brightly, "Plans are for suckers."
"And you will be following this plan." Carter gave her a warning look- though he was clearly trying not to laugh, "Or I'll tell Sadie about the time with Mr Sha-"
"You wouldn't dare-"
"Ooh." Sadie leaned forward slightly, her face lighting up, "Is there something I should know?"
"Carter Kane I will kick your butt so hard if you say another word." Percy threatened- and Carter laughed.
"Scary-"
"You know I whoop your ass when we practise-"
"Only if I'm not using my Combat Avatar." Carter pointed out.
"I still beat you most of the time even then- you need to get better at making it last."
"I know." Carter rolled his eyes fondly, "You're the fiercest warrior out of the three of us. No one would ever dare question that." he paused, "Wait- Sadie- a diversion?" and the look on his face was one of someone who just knew that a diversion would probably end with Percy and Sadie blowing something up if it was at all possible- the two girls did know how to have fun after all.
"Relax." Sadie waved a hand, "You worry too much. We'll figure out something-unless you have a better idea."
Carter let out a groan. "I'll regret this- I'm going to regret this so much. How exactly do you plan on causing a distraction.
"I-" Sadie paused, "I don't know yet-"
"I can do it." Percy gave a manic little grin, "You know I'm mostly here as back up anyway-"
"That is not even remotely comforting Percy-"
"No no but I have a plan."
"and what would that plan be?" Carter raised an eyebrow.
"I go down there, blend in- there's a bunch of kids my age down there, and then when you give me the signal I can cause a distraction."
"It could work." Sadie's voice was thoughtful "You could use that spell you and Zia used back in Phoenix." she pointed out, "So we can let you know when you
need to distract people."
"Except for the fact that Percy's not exactly dressed like a wedding gue-" Carter started to speak- but Percy wasn't listening, ducking away quickly, darting out of sight, ignoring the sound of Carter sighing loudly in the distance as she shoved her hand into the Duat and grabbed out one of her emergency bag- she hadn't used it in ages, she'd packed it when she was eight- and, well, she was eight back then, she didn't have her priorities that straight. So she had packed several of her party dresses into the specific bag- and thankfully while she was a little taller that shouldn't make too much difference, and she quickly got changed into a light pink party dress, it would look reasonable for a wedding, it was strappy and the skirt flared out if she twirled- something she secretly loved, though she'd never tell Carter or Sadie that- and she pulled on a pair of sparkly silver Mary Jane style shoes that had a little heel.
When she returned Sadie burst out laughing, holding up a hand, which Percy promptly high fived.
"Say whatever you want about our sister." Sadie spoke proudly, "But she never disappoints."
"How did you even-"
"I had it in my emergency bag." Percy declared with just a note of smugness in her voice. "So, distraction?"
"Fine." Carter smiled despite himself, shaking his head, "Let's do this then I guess."
"Lovely." Sadie rubbed her hands together, "Khufu, stay here and keep watch. Open the dome when you see us coming up, yeah?"
"Agh!" the baboon nodded.
Carter draped his arm over Percy's shoulder, "Okay then. Let's see how Jaz and Walt have done."
"Zia was supervising." Sadie piped up, "They're probably doing better than us, let's be honest.
And sure enough their most senior trainees had done their job perfectly under Zia's direction. They'd duct-taped four Sons of Horus statues around the edges of the window and painted hieroglyphs on the glass to counteract the curses and the mortal alarm system.
Zia was stood a short distance away from them on the ledge outside the third floor- where the Egyptian collection was housed. She was leaning against the wall, and she smiled slightly when Carter, Percy and Sadie arrived, though she did raise an eyebrow at the sight of Percy, an amused look on her face. "Why?"
"She's going to act as a distraction." Carter told Zia, "There's a wedding inside."
"That wasn't part of the plan." Zia looked faintly concerned.
"They don't put weddings on the Web." Sadie muttered the words, her eyes focused on Walt- their first trainee, the boy who had showed up in the middle of Sadie dying her hair- a fact that the older girl still wasn't over, and Jaz- a pretty blonde girl from Nashville who was around the same age as Carter, Walt and Zia. She was nice- Percy liked the older girl- and Jaz looked up to Sally because she was a healer too, which automatically meant that she was in Percy's good books.
The two trainees had been talking quietly when the Kanes had dropped in, and Jaz had been holding Walt's hands, though she released them as soon as they noticed that they had company- and Sadie almost squeaked at that sight.
"Right." Zia spoke quickly, before Sadie could even open her mouth to ask them what was going. "It seems that we're all ready yes?"
"I guess so." Carter gave a wry smile, "Percy, can you grab some chalk and do that spell of yours-"
"Of course." Percy grinned, pulling her magic bag out of the Duat quickly- and it took her less than five minutes to do the spell, grinning slightly.
"Testing, testing."
"Good, that's done then. I'll let you know when you get to cause your chaos-"
"Y'know Carter I could have so much fun with this-"
"Don't you dare-"
"Ooooooh I'm a Barbie girl, in a barbie-"
Percy was cut off from her mental singing by Carter suddenly grabbing her in a headlock, "Stop that!"
"What?" Jaz and Walt both looked startled- they hadn't really seen Percy and Carter being- well, being siblings yet- Percy and Sadie yes but not Percy and Carter since most of the time they spent around them when they were together was during training.
"She's being annoying." Carter grumbled the words as Percy grinned evilly despite the headlock.
"You two." Zia's lips twitched, "Can we perhaps focus. Percy try not to annoy your brother too much, Carter, if you don't let go of your sister I'll cancel our next date-"
"Oh now that's cruel." Carter's grin when he let go of Percy was huge- Percy knew he was still in shock over the fact that he and Zia were now officially dating, though they were taking it nice and slow. "But fine, I won't murder her- I saw that-"
"Saw what?" Sadie gave an innocent look, as if she hadn't just covertly high fived Percy behind Carter's back.
"You two are nightmares." Carter shook his head, "I don't know how I put up with you guys." as he spoke he moved to the window and opened it- no alarms or traps went off. "But Zia's right we need to focus. Let's get on with this."
