A very long overdue update for this! I had been debating on what to do regarding this chapter whether to carry it on directly after chapter 4 or skip ahead as to not fill the story with too many 'filler' scenes and chapters that could have made it drag out too much. I ultimately decided on jumping ahead. Don't worry though, the ideas I had for in between the time jump wont be wasted as I will feature them in my other story 'Life's Little Adventures'. I feel those ideas will probably work better as little short stories, especially for some of the themes I've looked up (some of the ideas have been mentioned in this chapter).
j8919: Aw thank you, hopefully this one doesn't disappoint too!
Greymon Leader Batx flashpoint: Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Sweet-SnarklingFool: lol yeah, especially when Mimi had put in so much effort into making it :)
RSBCS: Thank you :) I think I'll have more fun with that party came when it comes to including it in my other story
Sweet Cari: Thanks, it was probably a miracle Mimi didn't manage to tell anyone else lol
Fruitloop Trooper: Thanks. Yeah I'm still here, slowly updating :)
Malalala11: Aw thank you. Mimi just seems to be suited to organizing parties
Sorry I couldn't reply to all the reviews, but thank you very much to everyone who left one. I do enjoy reading them :)
And Baby Makes Five
Chapter 5
Fourteen hours and precisely fifty one minutes… That's how long it had been since Sora had left for the hospital, and Agumon couldn't understand what was taking so long.
After all, it had been yesterday afternoon when Sora and Kari had been seated at the dining table chatting over a hot drink when suddenly Sora had flinched; saying something about her contractions had started… whatever that meant. Next thing Agumon knew both women were calmly but abruptly abandoning their drinks and leaving for the hospital. Tai hadn't even been home since leaving for work yesterday morning either.
Agumon sighed as he looked up at the clock on the wall. It was 7.23am. He never usually saw this time of the morning, unless he needed the bathroom. But he had struggled to sleep all night, knowing something potentially exciting was happening but at the same time not knowing if everything was alright. All Sora had said to them when leaving was not to worry and they would let them know once the baby had arrived; but that, Agumon noted to himself yet again had been fourteen hours and now fifty two minutes ago. Surely something must have happened in those fourteen hours by now…
Over the last six months it had felt like there had been nothing but change since Tai and Sora had told him and Biyomon they were expecting a baby. He had heard what to expect from some of the other Digimon, such as Gatomon and Tentomon, but now he was experiencing it himself it still felt somewhat strange. To him everyone seemed to be acting differently at times… Sora's body had changed… they had moved into a new apartment, which had started to fill with all kinds of new and different things… but Gatomon had told him the biggest change to come would be when the baby arrived. Agumon couldn't help but feel nervous as he had no idea what to expect, so he couldn't even begin to imagine how Tai must be feeling.
What if they baby didn't like them Agumon had often thought…
Sunrise had been just over an hour ago, so now the living room was a lot brighter than it had been when Agumon had gotten up just before 6am. It was a far cry from the living room in their old apartment. It was much bigger; a spacious open plan living room and kitchen to be exact. They had moved in just over two months ago. Tai and Sora had always talked about moving when starting a family as their old apartment wasn't big enough, and Sora had always expressed her desire to move back to Odaiba when the time came. They had found the new apartment in the building opposite to where Tai's parents and sister lived. Sora had immediately fallen in love with it, but what had sold it for Tai was the en suite bathroom in the master bedroom, meaning he would no longer have to fight Agumon to the bathroom every morning.
Agumon looked around; taking note of how quiet the apartment currently was. Usually around this time Tai and Sora would be both getting ready for work, but this morning the place was calm and quiet... but he knew it wouldn't stay that way once they baby was brought home… it felt like the calm before the storm.
"Have you been up all night?"
Agumon broke from his thoughts to see Biyomon had now emerged from their room down the hall. He shook his head. "No, although it feels like it though. I could hardly sleep." He admitted.
"You must be really worried if even you couldn't sleep. You usually sleep through just about anything." Biyomon teased.
"Aren't you worried? Sora and Kari just got up and left yesterday, Tai hasn't been home from work and we haven't heard anything since. What's taking so long?"
"Sora said sometimes it can take a long time to have a baby so there's probably nothing to worry about."
"A long time? It's already been nine months, how much longer do they need?"
Biyomon couldn't help but laugh. The years they had already spent living in the real world with their partners there was still times when Agumon couldn't quite understand some aspects of human life. "It takes nine months for the baby to grow, but that doesn't include the time at the hospital. We're just gonna have to be patient. Sora said they would let us know as soon as the baby has arrived."
Agumon sighed, slouching back a little on the sofa. "But that was yesterday. I guess after all this waiting I just can't wait to finally meet the little guy…"
"Or girl. It could be a girl Agumon." Biyomon corrected.
"Yeah I know…" Agumon then hesitated for a moment. "Are you worried things will be a lot different now?"
"Hmm not really. Things will be different but I think it'll be a good different. Honestly I can't wait. I can't wait to help Sora with everything and help look after the baby." Biyomon smiled. "They've grown up and experienced so many different things in their lives; I'm just happy we can still be here and watch them become parents too."
"So am I," Agumon jumped down from the sofa, standing by the coffee table. It was full of baby clothes, toys and other things. Sora had been in the middle of sorting through them yesterday just before Kari stopped by. He picked up one of the sleep suits and held it up. It was an off-white colour with a cartoon dinosaur on the front. "The baby's not even here yet and it's already got more things than Tai and Sora combined." He commented. As he looked at the sleep suit it was a little hard to imagine Tai and Sora would soon be bringing home a person who would be able to fit into this tiny thing…
"Don't be silly Agumon, there isn't that many."
Most of the items filling the coffee table had been from Sora's surprise baby shower Mimi had thrown for her. Sora had celebrated her own thirtieth birthday just last month, and naturally Mimi had been up to her old party planning tricks. Inspired by a recent trip to England, and the fact alcohol was out of the question due to Sora being eight months pregnant, Mimi had prepared an afternoon tea themed party, hosting it at Kari's apartment. Before being born the baby had already been spoiled with lots gifts and clothes, to which Sora joked if they would have time to dress their baby in all of them before they were outgrown.
"Why do babies need so much stuff anyway? According to Gatomon all they do is eat, cry and sleep."
"Yeah, and sometimes they eat and cry when they should be sleeping," Biyomon warned. "So if I were you I probably wouldn't have gotten up so early this morning." She teased, to which Agumon looked a little confused. "Besides, you know once they grow they start to do more than just eat, cry and sleep. They learn to crawl, walk; we'll be able to play with them-"
"Draw over everyone…"
Biyomon sniggered. "You're not still sore about that are you? That was six months ago and MJ only drew on your face because you were silly enough to fall asleep next to her when she had a marker pen in her hand."
"It took Sora ages to wash it off for me." Agumon complained.
"Well, at least you gave her some practice at being a mother." Biyomon humoured, earning a glare from the rookie dinosaur.
"Hey I'm not as messy as a baby!" Agumon protested.
"No… you're worse." Biyomon giggled.
That night on his birthday had felt so long ago, but yet at the same time it had only felt like yesterday Sora had told him he was going to be a father…
And now, Tai was standing by the window of the hospital room, on a bright and mild November morning, cradling in his arms something he now considered to be the most precious thing in the world to them; their newborn daughter. The tiny baby was currently sleeping peacefully in her father's arms, wrapped snugly in a pink blanket. At first glance it was plain to see the infant had inherited a full head of her father's brown hair, but as Tai and Sora had noticed the first time she had gazed up at them; she also had his eyes.
Tai felt his cell phone vibrate in his back pocket again. He knew it would be more messages from friends and family congratulating them, and that he would have to wait until later to read them. He didn't want to move and risk disturbing his daughter. It was a little hard to believe that just a few hours ago she had been screaming like there was no tomorrow when entering the world.
Joe had already stopped by earlier to congratulate them. He had been working the night shift at the hospital and had visited them briefly before leaving for home, no doubt on the instructions from Mimi to check in on the baby and report back. Joe had admitted that recently he suspected Mimi was getting a little broody, to which Tai joked he would be his turn next.
Tai looked down watching his daughter for a few moments. It still felt quite surreal at the thought he now had a daughter, especially after they didn't think it would happen after trying for so long to start a family. He now had a lifelong responsibility, and since the baby's tiny hand had gently wrapped around his finger when he had held her for the first time in the delivery room, his heart had been bursting with pride ever since and he felt like he and Sora had become the luckiest parents in the world.
It had felt like their family was now complete.
Noticing the blanket had drooped open a little; Tai gently pulled it back up to keep the baby warm and to keep her from waking. "At least one of us is getting some sleep…" he said quietly. "Something I bet you're not going to let me and your Mom do for a while now." He added, smiling.
Sora had been in labour for almost fourteen hours after she had felt her first contraction just after half past four in the afternoon, and Tai had to make a dash from work straight to the hospital after receiving a call from his sister. It had taken him a little by surprise as the baby hadn't been due for another week yet. It had been a long night, and a few hours ago just after six o'clock the nurse had announced they now had a beautiful baby girl. Now after the adrenaline of everything that had happened in the delivery room had worn off, Tai was now starting to feel the effects of being up all throughout the night. But he didn't care, and he now knew a full night's sleep would be hard to come by for at least the next couple of months.
At that moment Sora entered the room, now feeling a little more refreshed after having a shower. She joined her husband by the window, gently wrapping her arms around his and resting her head on his shoulder. "She's perfect Tai," she said softly, gazing at their baby girl.
Tai smiled, glancing at his wife. "Yeah, she is."
The couple remained like that for a while, unable to take their eyes off their daughter, whilst also enjoying the quietness whilst they could. Now that their baby girl was here; all the worry and anxiety over becoming first time parents had now simply melted away…
Sora lifted her head off his shoulder. "How's your hand?" she asked with a little sheepish smile.
"A little sore, but its fine. I can't complain though; It's nothing compared to what you went through."
Sora smiled before softly stroking her daughter's cheek with her finger. "It was all worth it…" the tiny baby seemed to react at her mother's touch, but remained asleep. "You know, we still haven't decided on a name…"
"Well, we had a few names in mind already… now that we've met her it should be easier to choose one." Tai said as he carefully passed the baby to his wife.
Despite keeping the gender a surprise until the baby was born, they had been talking about possible names over the last few months. They hadn't realised until they had actually started to discuss it how hard it would be to choose a name for their baby. After much debating, mixed in with a couple of squabbles, they had settled on a short list of potential names; three on the list if it was a boy and four if it was a girl.
Sora cradled her daughter in her arms, gentling rocking her. "One of the names on the list was Akira... if I remember it had meanings such as brightness, morning sun and break of dawn."
"Well, considering this little one kept us both up all through the night until sunrise I think Akira 'Dawn' Kamiya sounds pretty much perfect then."
"I think so too." Sora agreed, leaning up on her tiptoes giving her husband a quick kiss. She then returned her attention to their sleeping daughter. "She already looks so much like you." She smiled, although she paused for a moment when the baby seemed to stir slightly. She watched as Dawn scrunched her little face, but still remained asleep. "Was everything okay whilst I was taking a shower?"
Tai frowned, pretending to be offended. "You doubting my parental skills already Sor'?" he remarked.
"No of course not," his wife giggled quietly. "I just wanted to check she's been okay. She'll probably be hungry soon." Sora then headed back over to where the hospital crib was next to the bed and gently put Dawn down laying her on her back. The baby fidgeted a little in her sleep upon being placed somewhere less comfortable than her mother's arms, but she soon settled. "The doctor said they just need to check her over one last time to make sure everything's okay. Because there were no complications during the birth they said we should be able to go home this evening."
"Huh? I thought everything was okay? Why do they need to check her again? Is something wrong?"
Sora smiled. "Relax, everything's fine. It's just hospital procedure with newborns before they're allowed home." She then giggled and kissed his cheek. "Our daughter's only a few hours old and you're already freaking out over the littlest of things."
"Hey, I was not freaking out." Tai protested stubbornly, to which his wife laughed quietly. "I was just… concerned that's all."
"I can't begin to imagine how you'll react to bigger things; let's say for example when she introduces us to her first boyfriend." Sora continued to tease.
"Sora." Tai said sharply. "That's not funny. That's years away and I shouldn't have to start thinking about that until when she's at least in her twenties!"
Sora smirked. "Sorry, I couldn't resist that one…" She then raised an eyebrow. "Twenties? Really?"
"What's wrong with that?"
"Oh nothing… I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Sora said light-heartedly. Just then, she noticed Dawn fidget a little, scrunching her face again. The tiny baby then slowly opened her eyes looking up at her parents. "Hi baby," Sora smiled softly.
Dawn let out a little whine, before it slowly turned into a bit of a cry.
Sora picked her back up, cradling her in her arms once more, to which Dawn soon settled back down but remained awake. "I guess you don't like sleeping in that crib huh? Or did Daddy over exaggerating wake you up?" she said as she began to rock her gently, giving her husband a playful look.
"Very funny… Let's hope she likes her crib at home. It took me a whole afternoon to assemble that thing." Tai remarked.
"That's only because you kept getting distracted by the soccer game on TV. I told you not to do it whilst the game was on. At times I didn't know if you were shouting at the TV or the crib."
"It was a bit of both. Those instructions were impossible to understand."
Sora smiled down at their daughter who continued to look up at her. "Anyway I'm sure the crib Daddy made for you is much better than this one." She continued to talk to her as she sat down on the bed. "If you like it Mommy will forgive him for all the bad words he said whilst putting it together."
Tai couldn't help but smile as he watched Sora interact with their daughter. She already looked so comfortable and at ease being a mother. "You know you have competition now Sor'. You're tied in first place as the most important girl in my life."
"Hey, I'll gladly share that with our little girl." Sora then leaned in closer, playfully whispering to their daughter; "And here's a little secret for you; If you ever find a boy you like you can always come and tell me, just don't tell Daddy."
"I heard that."
"You were supposed to." Sora said with a sly smile.
"Why have I suddenly got the feeling I'm going to be outnumbered here?" Tai quizzed with an amused grin. He then felt his cell phone vibrate in his back pocket again, but as it continued to vibrate he realised he was receiving a call instead of another message. Pulling his phone from his pocket he looked at the screen to see he was receiving a video call from his sister. Now that his daughter was awake, he felt it was now safe to answer his phone. "Hey Kari," he greeted after accepting the call. He then sat down next to his wife on the bed.
"Hi!" Kari greeted excitedly, waving at the camera. "How are you both doing? And more importantly how's my niece?"
Tai looked a little curiously at his screen, particularly the background behind his sister. "Kari, what are you doing in my kitchen?"
"Huh? Oh, after me and Sora suddenly took off yesterday I thought I'd stop by and make Agumon and Biyomon some breakfast and keep them company." Kari replied. "As Agumon told me it's now been over fifteen hours without hearing from you both." She turned her camera around to show the two rookie Digimon sitting at the dining table eating plates of freshly made omelettes. Both Digimon waved, shouting congratulations to their partners. Dawn then let out a little cry, and Kari's smile widened as she heard it through the phone. "Tai, as much as I love you I don't want to see your face on camera right now. After twenty seven years I've seen enough of you." She hinted, teasing.
Tai frowned. "Hey I was going to introduce you to your niece but after that comment I might change my mind."
"Kari, I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference anyway." Sora said. She took her husband's phone and adjusted the angle so the camera faced down on their daughter.
Dawn stared up at the new object now above her tiny head, fidgeting a little in her mother's arms.
Kari gasped in delight. "Oh… she's adorable," she smiled. "I see what you mean; I can definitely see Tai in her… poor thing."
"Kari, one more remark like that and I'm hanging up." Her brother warned.
Kari laughed, as did Sora. "Sorry Tai, you know I'm only joking. I forget you get grouchy when you've not slept."
"Hey so do you Kari."
"I know; we must get it from Dad… or at least that's what Mom says."
Sora glanced down at her baby daughter as Tai took back his phone, switching the camera mode so Dawn could still be seen. "I guess that's something I should watch out for with you too huh?" She humoured.
Kari grinned a little as she watched Dawn on the screen, somehow entertained at the thought of her niece growing up to be exactly like her brother. "I'm so happy for you both. I can't wait to meet her properly. Margaret's been excited too. She was saying baby all last night before bedtime when I said her baby cousin would be here soon."
"Hey, we wanna see the baby too!" Agumon's voice could be heard in the background.
"Okay, just a sec," Kari told him.
Tai watched as his sister moved closer to where their Digimon were seated at the dining table. "Hey guys," he greeted once the screen had focused on them both. "There's somebody very special here who can't wait to meet you."
Agumon and Biyomon's faces both lit up with glee upon seeing the tiny brown haired baby on the screen. "Aww she's so small…what's her name?" Biyomon gushed, but she frowned as Agumon almost pushed her out of the way. "Agumon!"
"Sorry… I'm trying to get a better look." He said, standing up in his chair and leaning over the table eagerly.
"You don't need that much room."
"But I want a closer look."
"But now I can't see!"
Tai smiled. "Hey don't fight you two. We'll be home later this evening and you'll both get to meet her properly."
"And her name is Akira 'Dawn'" Sora replied, smiling as Dawn had now lost interest in the phone and was now gazing off into space. "I hope you both got plenty of rest last night because things are going to be a little crazy for a while when this little one moves in."
"It won't be that bad will it?" Agumon said. "How much trouble can someone that small be?"
Tai smirked. "You'll be surprised Agumon. She may be small but believe me she can make one hell of a noise." He then glanced past his partner, focusing on the part of the kitchen he could see in the background. "And Kari; that mess better be cleaned up by the time we come home later."
Kari laughed, turning the camera back on herself. "Hey, you know Mom's always said I'm the tidier one. I'll have the kitchen spotless in no time. It'll be like I was never here. Besides, you have a baby now Tai. A little mess in the kitchen is going to be the least of your problems."
Tai frowned. "You know I think you missed your calling Kari. Instead of being a kindergarten teacher you should have become a comedian." He joked with a hint of sarcasm.
Kari grinned at her older sibling. "You know I've always been the wittier one big brother." She teased with a wink, before then saying a quick goodbye promising to visit again, and ending the video call.
Sora smiled down at Dawn who had her attention on her again. "You know what I think?" she said to their daughter. "I think Daddy's going to be outsmarted as well as outnumbered with all the girls in his life now." She said, earning a look from her husband.
"Well, I guess I'll just have to teach Dawn early to be on my side to even the odds then." He said, gently stroking his daughter's hair.
Sora continued to smile before she leaned in, kissing him softly. She then noticed he was looking a little tired, which was then confirmed with a slight yawn. "You know, speaking of rest earlier; maybe you should go home and get some sleep."
"Huh? Sor' I can't leave."
"I know you don't want to leave, but you've been awake for over 24 hours Tai, and once Dawn's home she won't be letting us sleep properly for a long time."
"I'm fine," Tai said through another yawn as he stretched a little, although it earned him a look from his wife. "Sora," he tried to protest. "What about you and Dawn? What if you need help with something? And you haven't slept either, it wouldn't be fair if I-"
"We'll be fine for a few hours, won't we sweetie?" Sora replied, briefly smiling at their daughter who just stared up at her. "The nurses are here if I need anything, and I'll get some rest when Dawn's asleep and when she goes for her final check up later. You'll appreciate it later. Besides, I bet you would like to change out of your work clothes and take a shower as well."
After driving straight to the hospital from work yesterday afternoon he was still wearing his work attire. The tie had been removed when he had been briefly stuck in traffic when crossing Rainbow Bridge, and he had since unbuttoned the top two buttons on his shirt. Now that he thought about it he did want to change into something a little more comfortable. "Yeah but-"
"Also the car seat is still at our apartment so you need to go home to get that anyway."
"Actually, I was just going to call my Dad and ask him to bring it-"
"Tai."
Noticing the look his wife was still giving him, he knew he wasn't going to win. "Alright I'll go," Tai sighed in defeat. "But if you need me call and I'll come straight back."
"We'll be fine," Sora reassured. "Now go and get some sleep whilst you can. You'll thank me later for it."
"Okay, I'm going." Tai then leaned down and gently kissed his daughter on her forehead. "You be good for your mother okay kiddo? Don't be causing any trouble whilst I'm gone." He then gave his wife a quick kiss on the lips. "I'll be back later. Remember; call me if you need anything."
"I will, and don't forget the car seat." Sora reminded him as he headed for the door.
"I won't,"
After Tai had left, Sora made a mental note to text her husband later to make definitely sure he didn't forget the car seat. She then looked down at Dawn who was now stretching her little arms. "You better not turn out to be as stubborn as your father." She teased softly, to which, if possible, she could almost have sworn she received an innocent-like look from her daughter…
to be continued...
