[Scene cuts to several longships gliding through fog]
Stoick sighs dejectedly remembering all those failed missions
Stoick: I can almost smell them. They're close. Steady.
Stoick (cont.): Take us in.
Viking: Hard to port... for Helheim's gate.
[Scene cuts to the Arena, in the middle of a training session]
Hiccup: You know, I just happened to notice the book had nothing on Night Furies. Is there another book? Or a sequel? Maybe a little Night Fury pamphlet?
"'A Night Fury pamphlet'?" Astrid turns to look at Hiccup amused.
"It's possible!" he defends
Stoick intervenes when he sees Astrid open her mouth "There is no pamphlet of any kind Hiccup" he points to the screen "And you shouldn't be thinking about that when your life is in danger"
Hiccup smiles sheepishly and turns back to the screen but not before cathing Astrid's smirk and sending her a mock glare.
[A Nadder fires at him]
Hiccup: WHOA!
Gobber: Focus, Hiccup! You're not even trying!
Gobber (cont.): Today is all about ATTACK! Nadders are quick and light on their feet! Your job is to be quicker and lighter!
Fishlegs: AAAAAH! I'm really beginning to question your teaching methods!
Tuffnut jumps up and down in his seat "It was an awesome method!"
Ruffnut nods along with her brother "All that danger and fire and blood!" the twins laugh hysterically.
Every single parent in the room turns to glare at Gobber who's trying and failing at hiding in his seat.
Gobber sighs "I'll change it"
"You are not gonna need it anymore" points out Hiccup
Realization dawns on the adults that they are not going to live and breathe for the sole purpose of killing dragons. It makes them question what their lives are gonna be like now.
Gobber: Look for its blind spot. Every dragon has one. Find it, hide in it, and strike!
Ruffnut: Ugh! Do you ever bathe?
Tuffnut: If you don't like it, then just get your own blind spot!
Ruffnut: How about I give you one?
[The Nadder attacks the twins]
Gobber: Blindspot, yes. Deaf spot? Not so much. Heh, heh, heh.
Hiccup: Hey, so how would one sneak up on a Night Fury?
Gobber: No one's ever met one and lived to tell the tale. [Snapping] NOW, GET IN THERE!
Hiccup: I know, I know, but hypothetically-
Astrid: [Whispering] Hiccup! Get down!
Snotlout: Watch out, babe. I'll take care of this.
Astrid groans quietly so no one can hear her but Hiccup catches it and smiles at her sympathetically.
[tosses hammer at Nadder, but misses]
Astrid snorts and everyone starts laughing.
Snotlout grumbles something incomprehensive and crosses his arms while his father shakes his head embarrassed.
Tuffnut and Rufnut are imitating Snotlouts throw making everyone laugh harder, Hiccup and Astrid laugh so hard tears are coming out.
Astrid: Hey!
Snotlout: The sun was in my eyes, Astrid! What do you want me to do, block out the sun? I could do that, but I don't have time right now!
Hiccup: They probably take the daytime off. You know, like a cat. Has anyone ever seen one napping?
Gobber: Hiccup!
[The walls start toppling as Astrid starts leaping from wall to wall, the Nadder behind her. Astrid jumps off the last collapsing wall, right onto Hiccup]
Hiccup and Astrid blush while the rest of the riders snicker.
Astrid: HICCUP!
Tuffnut: Oooh! Love on the battlefield!
That makes them blush harder and the room laughs at their expressions. Hiccup and Astrid turn to look away from each other.
Hiccup sneaks a glance at Astrid. It has been months since she kissed him and he still doesn't know if that means something. She hasn't acted any different towards him and It's making him lose his mind. Maybe watching this will reveal something he overlooked.
The thought makes him pause What if that is the reason we are watching? It did say we were gonna watch our future.
"Hey" Hiccup elbows Astrid lightly making her turn to him.
She opens her mouth to retort something about what happened on the screen when she notices his serious expression "What's wrong?"
"I've been thinking" whispers Hiccup "What if we are watching this because something so bad happens in the future we might not be able to face it without learning about our past and future"
Astrid looks at Hiccup wide-eyed. They had indeed been so distracted about what was happening that they didn't question the reason for it "You mean a possible attack on Berhk?"
Hiccup nods thoughtfully "Maybe" he sighs and rubs his temple "It's impossible to know"
"You are right" Astrid whispers "The most logical answer would be an attack on Berhk but nothing about this is logical so it could be anything. Perhaps another dragon?"
Hiccup hums "It could be" he takes his notebook out and a pencil "Either way it's better we take some precautions. If we are being shone this something must be useful to the future so we should take some notes"
Astrid nods and looks around the room, the rest of the village had continued watching while they were discussing, some of them were looking amazed at Hiccup with Toothless. She quickly turns back to Hiccup "What if this isn't for us?" Hiccup gives her a confused look and Astrid elaborates "Think about it you and I, We were in the middle of this whole mess when it happened so we know what happened. If it was something we needed to learn we would have watched the future, but the whole village was brought here some of whom don't know much of what happened. What if watching the past is for them?" Astris watches as the realization hits Hiccup. "What if we are watching how you made friends with Toothless because they had to learn how to make friends with dragons?"
"Because we might need an entire village of dragon riders" whispers Hiccup in amazement.
Astrid nods and Hiccup looks around the room.
"So it's a threat so big we require this many people" he whispers in dread. He sighs "We don't know yet so we can't leave anything to chance. It's better if we pay close attention in case something might be useful to our predicament"
Ruffnut: She could do better.
Hiccup: Just... let me... why don't you...
[Astrid yanks the ax off Hiccup's shield and swings it at the Nadder]
Gobber: Well done, Astrid.
Astrid: [to Hiccup] Is this some kind of a joke to you? Our parents' war is about to become ours! Figure out which side you're on.
Stoick looks at his son after hearing what past Astrid said. He was surprised to find him and Astrid whispering about something. From the looks on their faces, he could guess it was something serious. Stoick frowned in thought and decided to keep a close eye on them.
[Scene cuts to at the cove.]
[Hiccup approaches with a fish, leaving his shield behind]
[The Night Fury creeps out from behind a rock. Sniffs at Hiccup and the fish, slowly approaches, then retreats upon seeing Hiccup's knife. Hiccup kicks the knife into the water. The Night Fury relaxes and slowly takes fish, revealing a toothless mouht]
Hiccup: Huh. Toothless. I could've sworn you had...
[Toothless' teeth suddenly jut out of his gums and he snatches the fish]
Hiccup (cont.): ...teeth. Uh, uh, no, no, no. I-I don't have anymore.
[Toothless regurgitates half of the fish and proceeds to direct Hiccup through biting and swallowing it. Toothless then tries to return Hiccup's smile. He then snarls and flies away when Hiccup reaches towards him.]
The villagers look at the screen with interest and amazement watching as one of their own makes friends with the first dragon ever.
[After some time, Toothless sleeps and wakes up to find Hiccup drawing Toothless in the sand, Toothless then use a branch to 'draw' Hiccup in the dirt.]
The kids in the room giggle and laugh at Hiccup and Toothless.
[ Hiccup steps over the lines to finally reach Toothless. Hiccup offers his hand to Toothless while looking away, Toothless finally trusts Hiccup enough to touch his nose to Hiccup's hand. Toothless snorts and runs away.]
Stoick watches as his son and Astrid return their attention to the wall now with a notebook in hand and focused expression on.
[Scene cuts to on top the watchtower at night]
Gobber: ...And with one twist, he took my hand, and swallowed it whole. And I saw the look on his face: I was delicious. He must have passed the word because it wasn't a month before another one of them took my leg.
Fishlegs: Isn't it weird to think that your hand was inside a dragon? Like if your mind was still in control of it, you could have killed the dragon from the inside by... crushing his heart, or something.
Snotlout: I swear, I'm so angry right now! I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop off the legs of every dragon I fight. With my face!
Snotlout sinks low in his seat when he hears the sniggers from the villagers.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut laught at his expression.
Gobber: Un-unh. It's the wings and the tails you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead dragon. Alright. I'm off to bed. You should be, too. Tomorrow we get to the big boys. Slowly but surely making our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare. But who'll win the honor of killing it?
Tuffnut: It's gonna be me. It's my destiny. See?
Fishlegs: [Gasp] Your Mom let you get a tattoo?
Tuffnut: It's not a tattoo. It's a birthmark.
Ruffnut: Okay, I've been stuck with you since birth, and that was never there before.
Tuffnut: Yes, it was. You've just never seen me from the left side until now.
[After hearing what Gobber said about how a dragon is unable to fly without wings, Hiccup heads to the forge late at night, and makes a new tail-fin for Toothless to replace the one the Night Fury lost.]
"You know," says Astrid catching Hiccup's attention "It's amazing watching you work. It's like you get transported somewhere else like you are in your element"
Hiccup chuckles and Astrid looks at him "I could say the same thing about you when you are training" He smiles softly at her and she returns the smile. They stay looking at each other for seconds that seem like minutes until Astrid realizes, clears her throat, and looks back at the wall, a light blush adorning her cheeks. Hiccup then also turns back at the wall rubbing his neck.
Meanwhile, Gobber pays close attention to Hiccup's work sneaking a glance at his close friend to see him awestruck watching his son in the forge. Gobber makes a mental note to show Stoick some of Hiccup's best work.
Hiccup: Hey, Toothless. I brought breakfast. I hope you're hungry. Okay, that's disgusting. Uh... we've got some salmon, some nice Icelandic cod, and a whole smoked eel.
[Toothless roars in fear at the sight of the eel.]
"So that's how you learned that worked" mused Fishlegs.
Hiccup nodded and scratches Toothless "Most of what I learned about dragons was accidental"
Hiccup (cont.): No, no, no, no! It's okay. Yeah, I don't really like eel much either.
[Toothless starts to eat the fish.]
Hiccup (cont.): Okay. That's it. That's it, just stick with good stuff. And don't you mind me. I'll just be back here... minding my own business.
[Hiccup tries to attach the new tail-fin.]
Stoick groans "I can't believe you tried to touch a dragon's tail while they were distracted" Hiccup smiles sheepishly at him, "You could have gotten killed, Hiccup"
Hiccup (cont.): It's okay. Okay... okay... There. That's not too bad. It works.
[Toothless takes off with Hiccup literally on his tail. They head towards a rock wall]
Many villagers gasp in surprise.
Hiccup (cont.): Whoa! No! No! No!
[Hiccup quickly adjusts the tail fin and they dodge the wall]
Hiccup (cont.)
OH, MY- IT'S WORKING! YES! YES, I DID IT!
"Don't let go of the tail, you idiot!" someone shouted from the crowd.
[Toothless realizes Hiccup is on his tail and throws him off, then crashes into the lake.]
The crowd winces in pain as they watch.
Hiccup: AAAAAGGGGHHHHH! Yeah!
[Scene cuts to Arena, in middle of another training session]
Gobber: Today is about teamwork. Now, a wet dragon head can't light its fire. The Hideous Zippleback is extra tricky. One head breathes gas, the other headlights it. Your job is to know which is which.
Fishlegs: Razor-sharp, serrated teeth that inject venom for pre-digestion. Prefers ambush attack, by crushing its victims-
"Man, Fishlegs! Way to make someone nervous!" comes from the crowd
"Gosh, that would have me freaking out!" says another
Gobber leans towards Stoick "It seems the village has become comfortable enough to comment on we watch"
Stoick nods "That's good. They are as much a part of this as the rest of us"
Hiccup: [On edge] Will you please stop that?!
Snotlout: If that dragon shows either of his faces, I'm gonna- there!
[Snotlout and Tuffnut drench Astrid and Ruffnut, thinking they were the Zippleback.]
The crowd laughs
"I'm so sorry for you girls"
Someone hums in agreement "Having those guys as the only ones around your age"
Astrid and Ruffnut shout in appreciation "Thank you"
"At last someone who gets it" sighs Ruffnut
Ruffnut: Hey! It's us, idiots!
Tuffnut: Your butts are getting bigger. We thought you were a dragon.
Snotlout: Not that there's anything wrong with a dragon-esque figure- Ow!
[Astrid punches Snotlout in the face, and Ruffnut throws her bucket at Tuffnut, who is then dragged into the wall of smoke.]
Astrid: Wait. [A tail knocks them off their feet]
Tuffnut: OH, I'M HURT! I AM VERY MUCH HURT!
Fishlegs: Chances of survival are dwindling into single-digits now. [A Zippleback head comes into view and Fishlegs drenches it, only to realize it emits gas]
Fishlegs (cont.): Oh. Wrong head.
Gobber: Fishlegs! Now, Hiccup!
[Hiccup throws the bucket of water at the head, but misses]
Everyone laughs.
Hiccup: Oh, come on!
Gobber: Hiccup!
[Hiccup reverses the Hideous Zippleback with a hidden eel.]
Hiccup: Back! Back! Back! BACK! Now, don't you make me tell you again! Yes, that's right! Back into your cage. Now think about what you've done.
[Hiccup shuts the door of the enclosire]
Hiccup (cont.): Okay! So, are we done? Because I've got some things I need to, uh... Yep. I'll... see-see you tomorrow!
[Scene cuts to at the forge, Hiccup making a saddle]
