Chapter 2: First Selection
The mire of the everyday sloughs off.
A war between magi.
The wheel of fate turns.
Weak one, temper your sword,
And defend the value of your life.
Week 1 Days Remaining : 6
Combatants remaining: 128
Morning
The sky burns. Houses collapse into ruin. People fall to the ground. Roads come to an end. The conflict started here. With this, thus the world will be restored. It is here that "I" alone has survived.
Don't remember but never forget.
Oblivion is salvation and sin.
Never forget.
"I" was born from perdition.
This must be a nightmare. This had to be somewhere, it could be anywhere, these events that occurred in the true memories of childhood. A torrent of blood flows, and a voice resonating with bitter resentment can be heard.
Lives faded away without a thought. Friends, family, strangers. All gone, soldiers with guns, families trying to hold together, grotesque to the last, until a gentle peace descends as death comes to claim them.
But I could not accept everything I had seen. The question of "why?" never left me. Even with the divide between conflict and catastrophe, why did such a tragedy occur? No, more importantly why has this world been turned into a hell on earth?
Soon a gentle rain begins to fall. All things once living fade away, leaving only one behind. Amidst the helplessness and despair, their soul's last feelings are of rage and regret.
The rain wets their cheeks as their eyes close one last time, dying forgotten and alone. Seeing this, I struggle to rise from the depths of death. I will not accept what I have been shown.
If I can live again, I will definitely-
But there is no second chance. And before long, the rain has cleansed the scorched earth.
Never forget.
"I" was born from perdition. What that means-
Somehow, please don't forget it.
It seems the girl saw some sort of twisted and distorted dream. With that, she wakes up in the nurst office. She must've collapsed and was brought here. But then, does this mean that world, the effigy that blocked her way, and that Servant all a dream as well?
No. This nurse's office is far different from the one she knew. It's similar, but off, somehow. "I'm glad you're finally awake. You made me worry." The overwhelming, unforgettable presence of someone suddenly appeared beside her bed. Dressed in a fancy black coat, the mask still remains on his face, she remembers that the man had left an indelible impression on her.
But as this being is not human, any normal conclusion based on gender or looks would be moot.
"Are you feeling okay now? Don't hesitate to tell me if you're in pain." Hakuno felt his genuine concern for her well being. She answered him and noticed the relief on his face upon hearing it. "As the Holy Grail War began, monitoring your condition is now a necessity. Regardless, I'm glad that you're fine."
"If you do not mind. Can I ask something?" After receiving her acknowledgement. The young man proceeded. "You are fully aware of what the Holy Grail War entails, correct?"
"The Holy Grail War?" Hakuno replied, sounding a bit confused. She heard mention of it, but what is it, exactly?
"You know nothing about the Holy Grail War...? And yet you somehow managed to become a Master." He said in disbelief. The silence grew as they both stared at each other. Was it something she said? Moments of continuation and was only broken when he let out a soft chuckle.
As she continues watching him. Hakuno got a good look at him. Though there is a mask covering the portion of his face. He has this charm that could snatch a girl's heart. He can carry that charm with style and confidence. Perhaps her statement before about him maxing his charm was actually true.
Aside from that he does look smart and courageous. She can also tell that he's a genuine kind hearted person. And the way he uses the dagger against the effigy, he seems to carry a great proficiency as well.
He's on a whole different level. He didn't just max his charm but everyone one of them. Is this what a Servant is?
The young man smiled afterward. "Well I guess we're about the same. Still I should instruct you before the storm. Is that okay with you?" He kindly suggested. "Firstly, the Holy Grail is said to have held the blood of a savior and has the power to grant wishes."
Is he talking about THAT Holy Grail? The basis of an entire body of western religious history. A holy relic said to perform miracles that became well-known through the Arthurian cycle.
"The original has been lost to time and all that remains are base counterfeits. It also took various forms. It has been a cup and from my experience it became a false god. Nevertheless, in this place anything that grants wishes is considered a Holy Grail."
"Now about the Holy Grail war. It was the name given to the ceremony magi held to gain the grail." The young man let out a sigh. "In truth, it was a bloody competition from which the sole survivor would be granted the Holy Grail. This tournament you're in now is an approximation of the original Holy Grail War."
"From what I understand. New magi have emerged in a time in which thaumaturgy has all but faded. That was you and all participants here are."
"Magi…? Magus…?" Hakuno whispered. She can hardly believe that these words apply to her. It seems that others think of her as one. But whatever the case, it sounds like this Holy Grail War is a merciless fight for survival.
"Now that you're one of the many combatants. Keep in mind that here, to win is to live; to lose is to die." He looks troubled for a moment. "There is only one way to avoid death. The rules are simple. Two magi are assigned to fight each other using their Servants as weapons. The magus who loses to their opponent is stripped of both their Command Seals and their life."
Her eyes were drawn to her left hand where she was marked with three strange symbols. "These duels go on until the last remaining Master stands to receive the Holy Grail. Easy enough to understand but the weight of that action is revolting." Hakuno agreed to what he said. She doubts it will be that simple. While she still has a million questions, at least she knows the basics now.
And whether she wants to be here or not, she's now a participant in this Holy Grail War nonsense.
But still, is that the only way for her to survive?
As she was getting swallowed by her thoughts. The raven haired servant tapped her shoulder to get her attention. He didn't say a word, but it is enough for her to forget about what she's thinking.
"Now then let us proceed with what a Servant is. But let me ask first, do you know what we are?"
Hakuno shakes her head. "Sorry, I don't have a clue." She replied.
"You don't know about us either?" He didn't question any further. He understands her situation, but this lack of information from her may become a problem in this Holy Grail War.
"Servants are Legendary Souls called from the past or some cases in the future to help Master win the Holy Grail War. Only whose name and deeds have survived the millennia become Legendary Souls. And those people are reproduced here as Servants. Though some are more infamous than legendary."
"So we are basically soldiers, there to guide and protect the magus who summoned us. And as per rule of the original Holy Grail War, servants are divided into seven classes. Originally, the classes of Legendary Souls were hidden, but things have changed over time." He said, pausing for a moment, before continuing the long explanation.
"Saber. Lancer. Archer. Rider. Assassin. Caster. And Berserker. Each class has its own specialty for example. An Archer excels in use of the bows while Saber excels with swords. Additionally, these classes identify core skills only. Replicating every single skill would be impossible."
"A Legendary Soul's main traits are aligned with a class and then given form. It'd be safe to assume that an enemy Servant's class will give clues about their powers." He finished with a little smile.
"What is your class then?" Hakuno asks.
"I was about to let you guess what my class is. But then it would be unfair since I didn't list it in my explanation." The man said with a playful smirk. "I'm not part of those common seven classes. I am one of the non-standard Extra Classes."
"The name of my class is Pretender. But you can address me as Joker. Since my class is not very common, we are in great advantage since our enemy cannot easily exploit that information. But to add an extra layer of precaution. Just call me by the name I told you."
"Joker?" Hakuno said his name. He's from the extra class called Pretender. Remembering his explanation, a Legendary Soul's main traits are aligned with their class and given form. Then does Joker's power have correlation with his class? Pretender…?
"I don't know much about my class, so I couldn't explain what exactly it is. Still I should give you an idea where I excel, right? Let's just say I'm a 'Jack-of-all-trade' kind of Servant. I can adapt to any situation we're going to face. I hope we get along."
Though there are mysteries that shrouded who the man really is. But Joker's personality seems easy to deal with. And she's getting a feeling that he'll definitely be a great ally. But wait, if all Servants are Legendary Souls, then who is Joker in real life?
She looked at him and he discerned the meaning in her curious gaze. "Are you interested to know my True Name? Well I don't see anything wrong telling you who I am. But I'm not legendary, and my reputation was mixed, still who I am doesn't really matter right now. However, maybe one day, once I learn more about you, I will tell you about it. But right now it might be a disaster if our enemy knows my true identity."
"Nevertheless, as for the Holy Grail, all I know is that it grants wishes and creates Servants using famous figures from the archives of humanity's history. With you as magus and I as your Servant. I believe the Holy Grail will be ours." With the last glimpse of his confident smile. Her Servant disappears into the ether. However, she can feel his presence nearby.
Joker must be staying out of sight when he's not needed so their identity can't be compromised. But how a Servant identity would be guessed just by their appearance is beyond her.
Leaving the bed she's using. The school's clinic door opened and revealed a long purple haired girl wearing a lab coat and standard school uniform beneath it. "Ah, Hakuno. You're finally awake? I'm so relieved." She remembered her name. She's Sakura Matou. The school's famous nurse. She is loved by many males and females alike.
"You don't seem to have any injuries, so feel free to leave when you feel like it." The tone of her voice is very caring. Being a school nurse surely fits her no doubt. Not only that, her posture is so feminine that even being the same gender makes her jealous. "Also, all of your memories have been restored by the SERAPH so do not worry."
"Any magi that seek the Holy Grail have their memories suppressed and are given those of a student. Only Masters who managed to recover themselves are allowed to enter the main tournament. Now that you have regained your memories, please review them to make sure they're complete."
"Regaining my memories…?" She murmured in shock. Something is not right. Outside of her name, she can't recall anything of her past. She realized everyone around her was forced to believe they were normal students. However, she cannot remember a single thing that happened to her before then!
"Your memory restoration failed? I cannot help you. I, Sakura Matou, am just a custodial AI."
Hakuno's complaints were totally ignored. It seems that she cannot act beyond her programming.
"Oh, I should give this to you before I forget." Sakura handed a portable terminal or some sort. Hakuno assumed it's for getting messages and whatnot. "As a participant, you should pay attention to any messages that appear on your terminal."
As she finished the task. Sakura went to her working table and patiently waited for any Masters who might need her help. Hakuno couldn't help but to sigh, she needed some air, maybe the school rooftop might help.
On the way to the school roof. Hakuno notices a number of different people or perhaps Masters in the hallway. Some of them are in groups while others prefer to be alone while observing the environment they are currently in. She couldn't help but to feel down, everyone here has their own goals and reasons why they'd join this war. Meanwhile, she still hasn't recovered her memory nor realized her goal why she's here in the first place.
All the girl knows is that she wanted to survive.
As she opened the door to the roof. Hakuno questioned herself. "Would that be enough?" She asks and becomes distracted by her own thoughts. The girl didn't realize that there was someone else besides her.
Before her is a girl quietly gazing at the virtual blue sky above them. Even though it's just a pale copy, the girl looked very content with how beautiful it was. "I've investigated this school from top to bottom, but there's nothing unique about it." She pats the walls and floors while murmuring something to herself.
This girl…? Hakuno never met her, but she can't be anyone but Rin Tohsaka. She has a nice face and figure, gets good grades, and is popular at Tsukumihara Academy. And from what she heard, Rin even makes Shinji jealous. However, she became popular while the school was at peace. Things are different now.
That defiant gaze is nothing like the vacant smile of a popular kid. The Holy Grail War. Before she knew it, the school had been turned into a battlefield. And Rin knows it too.
Hakuno hasn't registered it before, but they are all predators now. It's kill or be killed. She has not acknowledged that as the truth, even if she doesn't want to.
"Huh…? Hey, you over there." Rin's eyes soften as she looks at her. "Yeah, you. Hmm, I haven't checked the NPCs out much yet. Aha! I know a simple way. Don't you move."
Unexpectedly, Rin's fingers reach out and touch Hakuno's cheek. Such thin, delicate fingers. Hakuno realized how remarkable it is that such a strong gaze can come from such an innocent frame.
"Imagine that. You're warm, though you shouldn't be." But then Rin noticed something. "Huh? That's weird, seeing a red cheek flush like that…" Her face is just three centimeters from the tip of Hakuno's nose.
Hakuno can feel her heart racing at the closeness. Rin's breath exhales warmly against her cheek and her hair tickles the girl's bare neck. Her pat-down on Hakuno's shoulders and stomach seem playful compared to the harsh gaze from earlier. Transfixed, she was unable to move as Rin's pale finger slid over her.
"Interesting. You're more well-built than I had expected. You look and feel real. Maybe more real than most people." Rin said and was quite dazzled about her. She then suddenly turned around scowling. "Hey, what are you laughing at? It's to our advantage to look into everything, even the NPCs."
Although invisible, her Servant must be there. "Huh? She's a Master too? No… A Master should be more…" Upon realization. She must be thinking about it now. Since she is blushing like her. "W-wait. That means when I felt up-"
"Ugh, how embarrassing…" Rin murmured before stomping the ground. "Shut up! I can make mistakes too, you know! Don't call me a pervert!" Hakuno is pretty sure that the girl was addressing an off-color comment coming from her Servant.
"It could have been my imagination. Or a hacker-such a detailed NPC would rarely exist otherwise." Rin then turned her glare at the still blushing girl. "Anyway, you're to blame for being confusing. You're too bland to be anything but an NPC. Nothing but a blank look on your face, even now. Were the prelims too boring to jog your memories?"
Hearing that comment. The girl touches on a subject that Hakuno would rather not think about even in jest. It kind of grinds her to a halt. "I don't know about that. My memories haven't returned yet…" She replied gloomy.
"No way. Your memories still haven't returned? That's really not good. Once you enter the Holy Grail War, the only way out is to win. Leaving prematurely isn't allowed. Even without memories, or previous battle experience, you still have to fight."
"Oh well, it doesn't matter. You'll be defeated in the Holy Grail War soon enough." As the concern disappears from her voice. Hakuno saw the glimpse of the real Tohsaka, her opponent in the Holy Grail War. It's not personal. She believes the girl considers everyone in the Holy Grail War as her enemy.
"You cannot win, huh? I heard that word many times before. She will be an intriguing foe. But regardless, don't let it on your head, a chance is a chance no matter how small it is. We can win and perhaps find your reason for being in this tournament." Joker comforted her. She was thankful about it.
But unlike her servant, she has nothing to say about her future rival.
She has to win.
Now that she knows what's at stake, she has to win.
"Well, I guess I pity you. We're not cracking into the system and destroying it, we're hacking. I don't know what's on the other side of SERAPH's wall once it goes down. Did your soul get jarred after you made it to the main event? If it's lost or unreadable, then how about you investigate it later?"
"Well, in any case, you don't look like you're cut out for fighting. Thanks to the excitement, or nerves, everything feels unreal. No matter if you have memories or not. You can't help feeling like you're in a dream. It'll be hard to win feeling so disoriented." Rin gives her advice without looking at her.
So she lost her memories? Who is she and what's her story? What is she doing in this Holy Grail War in the first place?
All Hakuno knows is that she's a Master with a Servant on her command.
Week 1 Days Remaining : 6
Evening
Time passed by and Hakuno stayed inside the classroom this entire time after her talk with Rin earlier. Luckily, she's not the only one inside, there are students who are here as well. However, they are not bothering each other, instead they are just minding their own business.
Although, she heard something about the school store selling premium roll cakes. Why didn't she hear about this before? She would definitely buy one and enjoy it's delicious taste until its last piece.
Realizing the time, she packed her bag and left the room before heading to the rooftop once again. Hakuno was then greeted by Rin who surprisingly has a playful tone on her. "Oho, if it isn't out resident lost little Master. Is there something you want from me?" Before she could answer, she cut her off. "I said already, but we're at War and you're my enemy. I have no desire to be your friend."
She didn't expect her to blunt it like that. In fact she was really hoping that they could be friends even in the state they are currently at.
Letting out a sigh, Rin looked at her. "Seeing as you can't remember anything, I guess any info would be useful to you. Since no one else is stupid enough to help, I guess I will. If it's only the basics, I'll tell you what I can, that should be enough right?"
Hakuno gratefully nodded to her.
"But beyond the basics, you're on your own. Poke around the SERAPH if you need more specific info." With that she began explaining these details that Hakuno was not aware of. Like what exactly is the SERAPH, and what is a Magi.
From what she told her. This SERAPH refers to the artificial world where they are at now. Basically, it's like a virtual reality. But it works on a level far removed from super computers and networked clusters. It made sense since creating a single Legendary Soul is far beyond the capacity of most of the world's computers.
Hakuno couldn't imagine the power that is needed to just run the horrifying preliminaries, and that counts all the NPCs that are necessary during that time. Things are just so anomalous that she only imagines god-like hacking skills just to gain access. And to be able to digitize the body and exist here requires a magus-level talent.
Which leads to the explanation of what a Magus is. In the virtual world of SERAPH. None of them have any substance. Normal hackers enter a system using programs. But the methods used by a magus are far more advanced. A Magus will digitize their soul and then insert themselves into virtual worlds such as this one.
It let them process data instantaneously, which would be impossible for normal hackers. However, not everyone can be a Magus, you can't learn how to become a Magus, you have to be born with natural magical circuits. Hearing all this information, both her and Joker were impressed by her knowledge.
Moreover, Joker commented how Rin Tousaka freely traipses around the network. He then continues to mutter to himself, obviously amused by Rin's skill. "I bet those two will definitely be interested in this place." Joker said with a soft smile on his facade.
"Do you know someone who likes this kind of stuff?" Hakuno asked. He nodded about them. One is a hacker and the other is a genuine AI. Both who might be one of the top contenders in this place. Though he does not think they have this 'Circuits' that is required to enter. It makes her wonder what kind of people he is hanging out with?
A hacker and a genuine AI? It sounds like he came from a modern age. Still it's just a speculation for now. Deciding to ask Rin a different question, about Rin herself, the girl simply sent her a glare and shouted at her.
Hakuno knew she'll be angry about it but at the very least she tried. But she let it slide since she still owns her from the molesting that happened this morning. And with that she turned around and mind her own business. Even though Rin has a somewhat rough attitude, Hakuno believes she's a good girl. She knows there's a term about this kind of person but it's just in the back of her head.
Forgetting what it is, she said her thanks and left her alone.
After Hakuno leaves Rin at the school's roof and heads to the first floor of the academy. There was a man in his mid twenties wearing a priest's clothes suddenly stopped her from tracks and talked to her.
"Congratulations. You have been deemed worthy to be a participant in the Holy Grail War. You may call me Father Kotomine. I am an NPC assigned the task of supervising the Holy Grail War."
The way he talks sounds like he's dead inside, he doesn't show much emotion as a priest should have. She also feels something from this man, like something off about him.
"As of today you and your fellow magi have been given the honor of fighting in the Arena up ahead. The war is run as an elimination tournament, with the Grail being awarded to the last person standing. In other words, the participating Masters will kill each other until there is only one person left."
"Simple enough to understand, yes? Even a complete idiot should be able to understand the rules. Masters get a six day preparation period before the Elimination battles. Which occurs on the seventh day. I'd advise you to use that time given to devise the most efficient means of slaughtering your foe."
"On the seventh day, you and your foe will fight. The winner lives, and the loser is deleted. If you wish to make a query, speak now. The right to ask about the rules is given to all." Father Kotomine said.
"You said I'm facing my foe on the seventh day, correct? But I still don't know who that was." She asks. The identity of her opponent for this week is still not announced.
"You have yet to be informed of your first round opponent?" Father Kotomine was a bit surprised upon hearing that. "Wait a moment." After a few seconds he scans the problem using a tablet-like device on his hand. "Strange. There seems to be a system error. I will locate your opponent by tomorrow." He gave her a slight bow.
But before he leaves. Hakuno owns portable device rings. "Masters that continue to advance will be given a private room. Your room will be located in classroom 2-B. Please enter the password that was sent to your terminal."
"Well, the time for conversation has come to an end. The door ahead leads to the Arena. For today, concentrate on becoming accustomed to the inner workings of the Arena. The Arena Entrance uses the same door you went during the preliminaries. Good luck."
With everything having been said and done, Father Kotomine leaves and proceeds to whatever tasks he has to do. Following his advice, Hakuno decided to head to the Arena entrance found at the end of the first floor hallway.
Recognizing the familiar door that she entered during the preliminary round. It doesn't change at all. It still has the dreaded cold air. The same feeling that once stopped her from knowing the truth.
Standing before it once again. It doesn't affect her anymore. Not that much at least. Strengthening herself, she then entered a new frontier that will mostly be their training ground.
With a flashing light that covered her vision, she felt like her body was getting transported into somewhere else.
"Enemy programs created by the SERAPH roam the Arena. Let us proceed with caution and readiness as we explore this area." The moment they step inside the Arena. Joker quickly reminded her about the possible danger of this place. This dungeon was huge and it was her first time exploring one. Which is why he set them limits on how far they can go for today.
She understood his point and agreed with it. Since Hakuno is still new, she may panic and put herself in danger. Still Joker was kind enough to help her learn the way of combat.
Joker will be her sword and shield.
And she will be his support and guidance in battle.
That will be their role whenever a battle comes for them.
Hakuno watches her servant sneak behind the enemy before executing a beautiful ambush. It was perfect and none of their enemies stood a chance to retaliate. Their exploration went smoothly as her servant didn't make any mistake executing this method.
Joker mainly uses a dagger and what it looks like a modern pistol. Both compliment his combat style and agile movements. Despite projecting the image of cockiness on his facade, she noticed how calculative his attacks are, it was precise and accurate, he also made sure not to give any opening or have his enemies read his moves.
Though he often taunts them while showing off. Still it doesn't seem like it's getting to his head. Perhaps that is just his style. But during fights where they found themselves outnumbered, she was there to tell him their position, he was a good listener and like he said earlier. He can adjust to any situation.
And she admits. Even though she's new to this Master and Servant stuff. Joker makes her look better.
She couldn't wonder about who Joker is. What era did he come from? What are his stories? And the achievement he did that put him in the throne of heroes?
The curious look from her did not go unnoticed by the Servant. She saw a smirk from his face, it's not for his enemy, but probably for her. It made Hakuno wonder what it was for? Is she making a funny expression?
"Is something funny, Joker?" She questioned the Servant.
"I couldn't help but be amused by your thoughts." Joker smiles charmingly. She can feel something heating up from her cheeks. Why is this happening? Every time he does this, she always feels this way.
Quickly averting her eyes away from him. Perhaps he has some sort of spell that has effects on women. That must be it! Curse him for using it against her!
"Did you know that Master and Servant have a mental link that came from the contract they made? Which means I can read your thoughts and you can read mine."
"Wait what?!" Then does this mean...He's been reading all her thoughts since earlier!?
"Just a warning. Don't stare too much or you might fall in love." Joker playfully teases his poor Master.
'Fall in love with him!?' How can he say that very smoothly!? This man is dangerous! Dangerous to us women! Wait, she shouldn't say that out loud in her mind. He might read into it as well.
Joker let out a soft chuckle and decided to stop his teasing. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That was just a joke. I was just teasing you and nothing about the mental link is true either. I'm just quite concerned about you, you have been so preoccupied since this morning, and this is the only way I know that will make you forget about them."
Hearing his sincere apology. Hakuno's servant really means it.
Releasing a sigh. She came closer to his side. "Joker…" Hakuno whispered before raising her hand and hitting his arms. "That's what you get for teasing me!" She knows that he was only concerned for her. She appreciate it but still-
He apologized again and again to Hakuno. And after his thirteenth apology where she finally accepted it. But that scene still keeps crossing her mind. She will exact her revenge on him one day.
Hours passed and they kept beating the enemy program inside the Arena. She gained plenty of experience and felt like something inside her is surging. Like some sort of power.
As they exited the place. Hakuno looked at her servant. The question of who he is still hasn't left her mind. But one thing is for sure, he will be there to protect her from this world. That's what he promised right?
After a long hour of dungeon exploration. The two of them returned to the "Private Room" that Father Kotomine told her earlier. Standing before the door leading inside classroom 2-B. She took her portable device and entered the password that was found in her inbox.
She then hears a low hum or incantation before the door opens.
When they entered the room, it had a resemblance to a classroom that appeared before them. Like a normal classroom, there's chairs, tables, curtains, and a green board that is attached to the wall. Behind her, she heard Joker soft whistle, mostly surprised by what their private room looks like.
Looking around. Hakuno wonders how they will make this room more comfortable for the two of them. Joker suggests to line the chairs to the side and use the tables as her bed. They can also use the curtains as blankets for them to use. Agreeing to his idea they started giving the messy room a makeover.
It took them 10 minutes to finish the arrangement. Joker then asked her if she wanted something to eat. Hakuno quickly answered yes. Together they bought sandwiches and drinks before heading back to their room. Seeing the room's new look, it's much better than earlier.
"This reminds me of the attic I live in." Hakuno heard a comment from Joker. Asking what it was. He told her that he lived in a Cafés attic for a year. Just how did a Legendary Soul end up with that living condition?
"It was a memorable year. I don't regret anything about it." Joker replied before finding a chair in the corner to sit on. "Anyway, there is something I must tell you. It's about my power, it's restrained, somehow."
"Which means our only chance for winning is your improvement. The more you become stronger, the more the restraints on my power will be lifted. So do not forget training in the Arena."
"Wait, I am holding you off?" She asks.
"Don't blame yourself. We are into this together, we can figure out a solution later on." He quickly reassured his master. Hakuno appreciated the thought but. "Now why don't you take a bath." Joker suggested before standing up.
"I'll be outside for a while so just tell me when you're done okay?" He then walked through the door and left.
Hakuno wonders what he thinks about all of this. He doesn't want her to feel bad, but she was the reason why he cannot draw out his full power. Does he deserve to be stuck as her servant?
She's clueless and powerless. He seems better with other Masters like Rin Tousaka.
"Oh, Don't be too hard on yourself. I told you we will take care of this." She heard his voice outside their room. "Sure you might not be the Master I expect to be. But I'm positive you're the Master I want to be with. And that is okay to me, I will serve you whether or not you're a top Master."
"So why don't you take a bath? It's kinda cold outside." Hakuno started to imagine him hugging himself because of the freezing air. She giggled on the thought and completely forgot about her problems.
"Thank you for your kind words, Joker. But I'm still going to reach your expectations. It may take a long time but I hope you can see it." Hakuno softly said. Getting ready, she entered the bathtub and planned to take a long relaxation inside the tub.
"Hopefully he wouldn't mind." She giggled softly.
Outside classroom 2-B. While still in his spirit form. Joker leaned on the wall as a sigh escaped his lips. It's been 25 minutes already and she is still not done. "This is your revenge from earlier isn't it?" He said to himself.
Week 1 Days Remaining : 5
Midday
As Hakuno left the classroom, she heard an electronic noise. It seems coming from the portable terminal she stashed in her pocket. When she removed it, she saw some words displayed on the screen. 'The next combatants will be announced on the second floor bulletin board'.
Combatants announcement? That must mean who she will be going to battle one-on-one with. She does not fully understand, but the girl ought to go to the second floor bulletin board to find out.
In answer to the notice sent to her terminal. Hakuno reluctantly heads to the second floor. On that now dreaded white piece of paper posted there, two names have been written. The first name is her own. The other name is-
Shinji Matou.
"So...you're my first opponent? I'm surprised you even managed to qualify." At some point during the girl's initial shock. Shinji came up beside her. "But I guess here, all things are possible. Hey, you might even be the most powerful magus here."
"We're at different levels even though we're friends. But still, I should congratulate you." Shinji's smile then turned into a smirk a second later. "Hey, didn't you just barely squeak through the prelims? I guess you're a charity case. I guess being mediocre has its advantages. You get all the handicaps and whatnot."
"Keep in mind that this tournament is all about true strength, so don't get too overconfident." The man then laughed to himself. "But man, the guys running the place are geniuses. Just look how intense the first round is. Come on, I mean forcing people to give up friendships in order to win? That is pretty intense."
"Oh what a cruel mistress can be, right? Even me, the strongest Master here, is pained by this." After that little outburst. Shinji puts a plastic smile and pats Hakuno on her shoulder. "Well, let's keep things clean, okay? It should be a good fight. After all, you're a Master too."
"When we see each other again, we will be enemies. Don't let our former friendship hold you back!" With that, Shinji Matou left the floor, leaving Hakuno crestfallen from what happened.
She has to fight Shinji and his Servant. No matter how many times she repeats herself, the meaning of those words fail to register in her brain. Does she need to kill a friend, a fellow human being, when she has no clue as to why? This whole situation has fast become a nightmare.
If Shinji is making light of the situation, then why does she feel like she's trapped in hell?
Week 1 Days Remaining : 5
Evening
An electronic chiming sound came from her terminal. Reading the message it said. 'The primary cipher key has been generated'. What is that supposed to mean? Coming from its root word, it must be a key to something. It's probably a good idea to ask that priest from before, Kotomine, about the message on her terminal.
He did say all participants have the right to ask about any of the basic rules of the tournament.
Leaving the classroom. Hakuno saw the priest in the same spot as before. "Ah, the young Master. I have a few things to say to you before you enter the Arena. Earlier, the computer registered that your Primary Trigger had been generated, did it not? Two Triggers must be retrieved by the end of the week, if you mean to participate in the tournament."
"I see." Hakuno replied with a nod. So failing to retrieve this key means that she cannot enter the Elimination round on the seventh day. Causing her opponent to win by default and her losing.
"Other things. Combat between Masters is prohibited in the Arena and on the campus at all times. If for some reason a fight occurs, the system will shut it down and force teleportation. Additionally, as a penalty, the status of any Master caught fighting in the campus will be downgraded."
With everything said and done. Kotomine let Hakuno do her own business. Deciding to retrieve the cipher key, she headed to the Arena entrance only to meet Shinji with a plastic smile on his face after seeing her.
"Hakuno, going to get the Trigger? Well sucks to be you. I'm going in right now too." Shinji said as he stood before the door. "A total cretin like you won't be able to find it, but good luck anyway!" He entered the Arena with his laugh echoing through the hallway. Leaving her somewhat dumbfounded.
Just how did they become friends again?
"He seems fun to be with." Her servant appeared behind with a sarcastic comment to say. "Regardless, this might be a good chance for you to get information. Let's hurry and go after him."
Joker must be up for something. He was quite hasty on that idea as well. Following his instruction, they entered the Arena. But what is he planning? Would it be dangerous if Shinji caught them?
"Joker, what's going on?" Hakuno decided to ask as they stepped foot inside the arena. Her servant standing on her side, seems really composed despite the possibility of getting into a fight with Shinji and his servant.
"In the Holy Grail War. Knowledge is power. It will give you a great advantage once you know a thing or two about the enemy servant."
"I see. But would this plan be dangerous? Are we going to fight them or are we just gonna spy on them?" She asked her servant opinion for their approach.
"The hallway up ahead seems narrow and hiding would be difficult. We might not have a choice but to engage them in battle. However, if things go dangerous for us, we will retreat right away."
Nodding her head. She trusts Joker's instinct in this one. "Just make sure you're not going to make dramatic choices just to show off, alright?" She said to her servant who only gives her a sheepish smile.
After a long run, while fighting attack programs along the way, they finally manage to trail Shinji who seems about to leave the arena. Beside him is a woman who's obviously his servant. She has long wavy crimson-like pink hair, blue eyes and a scar across her face. She wears a brown choker collar almost attached to her dark pink captain vest that shows her breasts, white pants, and long dark brown boots.
"Hakuno, you're late. While you were crawling along like a slug you are, I obtained the Trigger!" On his hand was a golden card with curved stripes. Shinji started waving it to her while wearing his signature smirk. "What's with that look? Your skills are pathetic compared to mine, so don't be so harsh on yourself!"
"And speaking of you losing. Let me introduce my Servant. I'm going to win anyways, It's not like it matters to me. If you can't even get your cipher keys, you might as well accept your defeat right here right now!"
Looking beside him. The female Servant who seems holding her amusement toward her Master's antics while watching him. "Seriously, feel free to turn her into a bullet-ridden corpse whatever you feel like." Shinji commented.
"Okay but are you sure you're done gloating? I found myself enjoying your meaningless chatter." The woman said while wearing a careless smile. Though elegant might not be in her vocabulary, and she might have a scar on her face, it didn't really matter since it only added to her rogue beauty. "As you can see, when it comes to talking to others, my Master is a total social retard, right?"
Joker let out a chuckle upon hearing the Servant's statement. "It must be difficult for him to make a conversation without boasting." He said playfully before looking at Shinji. The female Servant laughed from his comment and made her Master agitated.
"Just where in the hell do the two of you get off analyzing me?!" Shinji protested with a sweat on his forehead. "She is my enemy! Will you hurry up and maim her already!?"
Hearing the cry of her master. The female Servant summoned her weapon. A gun with a breathtaking design printed on. She in hostile pointed the gun at them. Hakuno's Servant naturally stepped forward to protect his Master.
"Look at the tough guy! I have to admit I admire the fact that you're evil enough to give a friend a beat down. The darkness of your grubby little soul is impressive, Shinji. Oh yes I expect a generous reward later!" Letting out a delighted laugh. She pulled the trigger all of the sudden. Joker quickly pulled her hand and hid behind the corner for cover.
"Stay here." Joker said to her before drawing the gun inside his tailcoat. The narrow hallway became a firing ground, all they can hear is the sound of their guns, and the smell of gunpowder. When the firing ceased, Joker rushed the enemy servant and combatted her in melee. However, the enemy Servant was able to keep her footwork and evaded Joker's attack.
'So this is what it's like fighting a Servant. It's very different from fighting a shadow.' Joker thought to himself. Still the thrill of having to fight someone better and more experienced than him is making the young man excited. He's always up for challenges.
As they break free from one another. The two get a good look at each other. "Hmm, that gun of yours? Is that what people in the modern ages use?" She asked while maintaining a good amount of space between her and Joker. Both Servants seem not tired at all, even though they'd clash one another at such a fast pace.
"Yes, it's not actually the real one but just a replica of it. This gun may not look as cool as yours, but it can do the job well." Joker answered. Though perhaps his gun is much cooler? It took down powerful deities after all.
"Oho? You have eyes for beauty." The woman smiled before tightening her grip on her weapons. "Would love to have a talk with you. But this skirmish will end now." She said before pointing the barrel of her guns at Joker. However, before she pulls the trigger, a voice has been heard behind her.
"Hack…!" Shinji shouted while directing his index finger toward Joker's position. There are some weird holographic symbols or codes that surround him. And then a small explosion hit her servant. It was instant and Joker was caught by surprise.
Moments later after the smoke is gone, Joker looks dizzy due to the effect of that explosion. Before he manages to recover. The enemy Servant took her chance and shot Joker on his left leg which brought him to the ground.
With a smile on her face, she was about to shoot another one until the system warning stopped everyone inside the Arena. SERAPH sees the violation red handedly, and because it was Shinji and his Servant initiate it, they are being forced out of the Arena.
Hakuno immediately ran toward Joker's side to check his condition. Meanwhile Shinji has a troubled expression due to the fear of receiving a penalty if they don't comply. "Crap! It looks like the SERAPH has its eye on us. Oh well, there's no need to take her out right now anyway. You know I like seeing you growl in the dirt like trash. Begged hard enough and I might take you as my underling." Shinji and his Servant were then teleported out of the dungeon.
They should be safe for now. Hakuno was concerned about the amount of blood coming from Joker's wounded leg. She grabs something from her virtual stash, and then her hands glew in green light. Though not sure what to do, she simply hovered it above his leg.
The light then went to his leg and in a moment fixed his leg.
"Thanks. That was close. I didn't expect that attack to come." Joker said before pulling himself back to his feet. What that man Shinji did, it must be the Code Cast he's hearing about. It's a sort of magic spell, compiled into lines of codes, then was put into an object. Only magi can use it because it requires their magical circuit to activate it.
What a clever trick. Still they will get them next time.
"But even still, that encounter was educational as we now know his Servant uses a gun." He then crossed his arms together. "We can tally down her classes with that information alone. Since she uses a projectile kind of weapon, she might be a Archer class, though that is just a speculation for now."
And since they also saw his weapons. He will assume that they have similar speculation as well. But considering that he's from a special class, they are still in a huge advantage.
"But doesn't her appearance remind you of a ship's captain?" Hakuno voices out her own thoughts. Joker smiled seeing that she's attentive during that confrontation. "This means we need more evidence before we can discern her."
Joker nodded his head in agreement. "I guess this is the right time for me to teach you something important. Let's grab the key and return to our room. We will discuss it there." He then took Hakuno's hand and gently pulled her up. "As thanks for healing me, I'll lead the way. Don't you let go, alright?"
She is not sure whether or not he's grateful or simply finds an excuse to tease her again. Was this his revenge for yesterday? It was his fault for teasing her first! Like nothing ever happened, the two were carefree as they searched for the key, although if someone sees them, she'll definitely die in embarrassment.
Hakuno will get him back for this!
Thus the cycle of revenge continues forth!
Returning to their private room. She had no problem getting the first key anymore and she also gained lots of experience from fighting many attack programs. Regardless, once they sat down on the chair, Joker once again touched on the subject he said earlier.
"When in battle. Exploiting your enemy's weakness will make the battle more easier. It doesn't matter if you're facing a strong enemy, as long as you know their weakness, then you can overcome them." Joker started explaining the importance of the topic in battle.
"In the Holy Grail War. Knowing the identity of your enemy's Servant will open up lots of options against them. For example, if we're facing a Master that has the great Greek hero, Achilles, as their servant then we will be in huge trouble. Because I admit, I will lose if I ever fight him. However, Achilles is also known for one exploitable weakness."
"Yes, the Achilles heel." Hakuno answered. Her Servant smiles knowing his Master was attentive in their discussion. "I see, so that is what it means by knowledge is power." She added and finally understood how important it is to conceal one's Servant identity from enemies.
"However, the Servant is not the only one we're facing. We also need to add the existence of their Master. What happened earlier is a great example. He was able to land that spell because my focus was only on his Servant. This is also a lesson for me as well." Joker carries forth the next part of his explanation. "Anyway, compared to the Servant, exploiting the Master's weakness is less difficult, they are more easier to read."
"Lastly is to always have more than one plan. A contingency plan in case something went wrong."
"You seem very knowledgeable about this topic." Hakuno commented.
"Well let's just say 90% of my battle experiences revolve around exploiting and protecting weaknesses." Joker answered. Fighting inside the Metaverse, against the shadows, it's only a matter of who will make use of that information first, or sometimes whether or not he wants to use Megidolaon or Die for me.
He then smiles but in a sadistic manner. "Regardless, I will tell you about how we will exploit the Master we are facing. But I trust that you will apply everything you learned today in our following battles."
"Tell me, how much do you know about this Shinji person?"
Seeing that smile of his. Hakuno felt a shiver down her spine. He's up to something. And Shinji and his servant will not see it coming.
