Missing Secrets

Bib:

When Rogue's diary goes amiss, she becomes a worried wreck since her diary contains the secrets of everyone she has ever touched.

Story:

"Shut up!" Jamie snapped at Kurt.

Rogue groaned inwardly as she listened to Kurt and Tabitha tease Jamie. She had been sat in the wreck room with Scott just enjoying the peace. Jamie had slipped in, almost unnoticed, but Scott had reached out to him, asking if he was alright after noticing his face. Then Tabitha had waltzed in and began teasing Jamie about something embarrassing. Kurt and Kitty had been nearby and overheard Tabitha. Kurt had joined in the fun making where Kitty had started calling Jamie gross. Jamie had gone red and looked like he was about to cry.

"Come on guys, drop it now. It isn't funny," Scott said.

"No it isn't. You're not touching my laundry any time soon, that's for sure," Tabitha said, folding her arms and getting cocky.

"Hey, he just said drop it!" Rogue snapped up, becoming irritated at the scene unfolding as well.

"Or what? Come on, you know you don't want him touching your stuff. Don't deny it." Tabitha said.

"Actually, Tabitha, I'd trust Jamie a lot more wit' washin' mah clothes than you. At least he wouldn't make the washin' machine explode then set people up ta take the fall every time one'a you're little time bombs accidentally fell inside," Rogue said.

"Wait, what? It's you who keeps breaking the washing machine?" Scott asked, raising from his seat and then pointing a finger at Tabitha. "I always end up having to fix the mess you make whenever you break it."

"Yeah, well, it's not my fault you're nothing better than a repairman!" Tabitha snapped up.

Scott's glasses gleamed a lighter shade of red as he approached Tabitha.

"I'm not your personal cleaner. The next time you wreck the washing machine, you better mop up the mess you leave behind, other wise, we'll have problems," Scott said.

"Oh really? What you gonna do? Go tattle to the Professor on me teacher's pet? Or make me run extra laps?" Tabitha said, her fingers sparkling.

"Come on guys. We were just having a joke, right," Kurt said, stepping in between Tabitha and Scott as they began to butt heads.

"Don't know why you're makin' fun'a him," Rogue said, standing up from behind the table she and Scott were sat at and making her way towards the door. "Ya were wettin' ya bed till ya were eight."

And with that, Rogue left the room.

Remy had got in a little late after heading out with Storm to check a location out during the day. His first stop was going to be Rogue's bedroom to check how she was doing, but what he found inside was rather interesting.

"Why are we, like, doing this again?" Kitty asked, glancing back into Rogue's bedroom from the door.

Remy slipped into the shadows of the corridor, becoming invisible as he watched the scene before him unfold.

"Come on, you saw what she was carrying. It's gotta be around here somewhere," Tabitha's voice came from inside Rogue's room. "Just keep watch already."

"I don't like this," Kitty said. "The last time I touched anything in Rogue's room, she, like, totally freaked."

"Yeah, well, how'd you like it if all of your secrets got around the mansion?" Tabitha answered back.

"Rogue wouldn't do that. She keeps our thoughts private," Kitty replied back.

"Oh yeah? Then why don't you tell that to blue who had his eight year secret spilled? You really want everyone knowing you wet the bed or something embarrassing like that just because little Miss Goth Chick woke up on the wrong side of the bed one morning?" Tabitha said.

Remy watched Kitty blush and glance up and down the corridors again.

"Ah-ha! Found it!" Tabitha cheered.

"Come on, let's go already," Kitty said.

Remy watched Tabitha appear from Rogue's room and how the two disappeared down the corridor. He frowned as he watched them go. He remained in the shadows as Jamie ran up and knock on Rogue's door.

"Hey Rogue, i-it's me. Jamie. I just wanted to say thank you for earlier," Jamie said to the closed door.

Remy smirked, stepping out of the shadows and approaching him.

"Whatcha doin' there garcon?" Remy asked.

"Oh, hey. I'm just knocking on for Rogue. Do you know if she's in there?" Jamie questioned.

"I don't t'ink she be in. Heard y' be wantin' t' thank de femme though, non?" Remy asked.

"Erm, well, yeah," Jamie said, scratching the back of his head.

Gambit's smirk only grew as he took Jamie by the shoulder and started leading him in the direction of Tabitha and Kitty.

"How 'bout y' let Remy tell y' how y' can really thank her?" Gambit asked.

"Do you get it?" Kurt asked.

"Of course," Tabitha said, holding up the book she'd taken from Rogue's room. "What do you think I am? An amateur?"

"Guys, are you sure we should, like, really be doing this?" Kitty asked.

"Don't you want to know what secrets she has on you?" Kurt asked. "She could like totally blurt them out whenever she wants. It's not fair to us."

"But it's not her fault. I mean, we don't go after Jean like this is she reads our minds by mistakes," Kitty said.

"Jean only sees what's on our minds at the time. Rogue knows everything! She sees everything right from the moment we're born till the time she touched us," Tabitha said.

"But it's only glimpses, right?" Kitty said. "And she can't really make sense of them all. I mean, it took her time to realise it was Mystique's memory she was having when it came to her secret about you being her son, Kurt."

"That's exactly our point!" Tabitha snapped. "That girl is crazy upstairs. She could spill anything at any minute. So why not take a glimpse into what she already knows about everyone and then we're even. I hope there's something good in here about One Eye," Tabitha said, opening Rogue's book and glancing through it. "I'd love to get some dirt on him seeing as he grassed me up to the Professor already."

"Wait, Scott?" Kurt said, shaking his hands in front of him. "I thought we were just seeing what she wrote down about each of us? Not everyone else," Kurt said.

"Well dur. If this girl's head isn't screw on tight, I doubt she'll have contents in her diary. We're just going to have to read everything and figure out what it is she know- Hey!" Tabitha snapped.

"Oopses, sorry," multiple James' said at the same time.

Remy watched from behind a book shelf as Jamie walked straight into Tabitha as planned. He'd dropped the huge number of library books Remy had told him to carry just as planned and kept his eye on where Rogue's book landed.

"Jeez, can't you watch where your going shrimp?" Tabitha snapped.

Remy moved from his hiding spot then.

"Did y' get de books-, send y' t' do one job," Remy said, looking disappointed at Jamie and folding his arms.

"Erm, sorry," Jamie said, moving to gather all the books up.

Remy sighed and leaned down to help him start gathering them up.

"Remy," Kitty said, placing a piece of her hair behind her ear. "What are you, like, doing here?" She asked.

"What it look like?" he asked, motioning to the book in his hand.

"Since when did you read?" Tabitha asked, folding her arms and glaring down at them both.

Kitty had muttered an "I'll help," and began picking up the books. Kurt had started helping too.

"Who said these be for readin'?" Remy said.

Tabitha moaned out, bending down herself and starting to pile books up into one of the multiple Jamies' arms. Her eyes went wide as she saw Rogue's purple diary on the floor and Remy reaching for it.

"That's mine!" Tabitha snapped, snatching Rogue's diary up and holding it to her chest.

"Désolé. Well, we best we headin' out. Try not t' drop them dis time garcon," Remy said, knocking one of the Jamies' upside the head as he did.

Jamie let out a moan then lined up and began to follow Remy out of the library.

"Geesh," Tabitha said, turning back to the book in her hand and opening it.

"Wait," Kitty said, "didn't we decide not to read her diary?"

"You did," Tabitha said. "I want to know what she knows."

Tabitha then proceeded to read the words in the book. She began to scowl as she read the first page.

"What is it?" Kurt asked, seeing Tabitha's face and moving to read over her shoulder.

"This isn't a diary!" Tabitha snapped. "It's a book about… Gambit!" Tabitha snapped, slamming the book closed and throwing it down on the floor before taking off after Jamie and Remy.

Kurt and Kitty glanced at each other before taking off after her.

"Hey, hold up!" Tabitha called after Remy and Jamie.

Remy stopped, making the line of Jamies' stop too.

"Probleme,?" he asked.

"Yeah there's a problem. You picked up my book!" Tabitha snapped.

"Oh? Thought y' grabbed it?" Remy asked.

"Yeah, well, one of you dummies must have picked it up!" Tabitha snapped, roughly tugging one of the Jamies' around and glancing at the books he was carrying. Tabitha then moved onto the next Jamie and the next. Not seeing the book she was looking for.

"Alright, where is it?" Tabitha demanded to know as she turned back on Remy.

"Where's what?" Remy asked, raising his eyebrow.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about you slimy little thief!" Tabitha said, getting up in Remy's face and pointing her finger at him. "Where's my book?"

"How should I know? Ain't here t' keep track'a your t'ings petite," he said, folding his arm and ignoring the finger in his face.

"I know you took it, now tell me! Where's my book?" Tabitha demanded.

"Is everything alright here?" asked the Professor who began to roll up to them.

"No," Tabitha said, folding her arms in a huff. "Everything's not alright! This slimy little pickpocket stole something of mine."

"Really?" The Professor asked, coming to stop along side Remy. "And what is it he has appeared to have taken?"

"My diary! And I want it back right now!" Tabitha demanded.

"I see and, might I ask, what does your diary look like?" asked the Professor.

"It's purple with a square on the front and these swirly engraving on the cover," Tabitha said.

"I see," the Professor said. "And tell me, how do you know it was Remy who took your diary?"

"I just had it two seconds ago in the library when this little twerp walked right into me. They must have been planning to swipe my book together," Tabitha said.

"So you had this diary in your hands no longer than two minutes ago?" The Professor asked.

"Yes! I had it and they stole it," Tabitha stressed, becoming all the more frustrated.

"I see. And Kitty, Kurt, did you see Tabitha with a book in her hand that matched the description she gave?" the Professor asked.

"Erm," Kitty said, glancing at Kurt nervously. "Well yeah," Kitty said.

"We saw it," Kurt said.

"And do you believe Remy or Jamie took the book?" the Professor asked.

"Well, maybe," Kitty said, twiddling her fingers together. "I mean, Jamie, like, dropped a load of books on the floor and Tabitha's must have gotten lost in there somehow."

"I see," the Professor said, putting his hands together. "And you've checked all the books in Jamie's hands?"

"Yes!" Tabitha snapped, "I've checked already. But it's not there. That Cajun thief must be hiding it somewhere in that coat of his."

"I see. Remy, would you mind if I check you coat for a moment, please?" the Professor asked.

"Sure t'ing," Remy said, slipping his coat off and placing it in the Professor's lap.

The Professor proceeded to check every pocket he could find, coming out with only cards and picks.

"There does not seem to be any book within Remy's coat," the Professor said.

"That's impossible!" Tabitha snapped, grabbing Remy's coat and beginning to check it herself.

"It's got to be here. Unless… Jamie must have created another clone! His clone must have run off with it!" Tabitha said, now pointing a finger at one of the Jamies'.

"Is that true, Jamie?" the Professor asked.

"What? No! Ask Remy if you don't believe me," Jamie said.

"I see," the Professor said, nodding his head.

"What? You can't believe him Professor! He's totally lying. Look at him!" Tabitha snapped.

"I believe a lie has been told, but I do not believe it is Jamie who has told the lie," The Professor said.

"Right, so it must have been that pick pock-"

"No Tabitha, I do not believe it is Remy either. Tell me, is the purple book you have lost really your belonging?" The Professor asked.

"Yes!" Tabitha snapped.

"Interesting. You see, just before this, I had a rather distressed Rogue in my office, stating that someone had broken into her bedroom and stolen her diary. One that you have described to a tee," The Professor said.

"So Rogue's claiming her diary's mine? I'm telling you Professor, that girl's losing it," Tabitha said, making a circling motion at the side of her head.

"I do not believe so since Scott confirmed seeing Rogue writing in this diary many times before and confirmed it's appearance as well. So please do enlighten me Tabitha. Why is it that you had in your possessions a book that Rogue has been seen to be writing in many times over?" the Professor asked.

"Well, I…I… We must have the same book. That's what it must be." Tabitha said.

"Kitty, Kurt?" The Professor questioned, looking past Tabitha to their guilty looking faces.

"Well," Kurt said.

"It wasn't Tabitha's book. It was Rogue's," Kitty finally admitted.

"What? No, it mine! Stop lying! It has things about me in there so it's my book!" Tabitha said.

"Tabitha, simply because a book may or may not have something about you within it does not mean that it is yours," the Professor said.

"Oh yeah, well the secrets in that book are mine! I never gave permission for little Miss Goth Chick to write them down!" Tabitha snapped.

"No, but I did," the Professor said. "I came up with the idea that Rogue keep a diary and write down all the thoughts that were overwhelming her whenever she felt them present within the front of her consciousness. I advised this as she was terrified of revealing secrets that belonged to others and only them. The book was a way for her to clear her mind without hurting anyone else in the process. A process which I believed the four of you all interfered with when you entered the library earlier and began taunting Jamie about his own secret which was exposed without his permission. And now, this book which has many secrets within it, possibly including you own, has gone missing."

The Professor said, eyeing them all deeply.

"I believe it be best that this book be found and returned to its rightful owner imminently, or else, who knows what secrets she may reveal next without this book," the Professor said, turning away from the mutant residents.

"Wait, you mean Rogue's going to start revealing all of our secrets if we don't give her book back to her?" Kitty asked.

"Indeed," the Professor said.

"Then just shove another book in front of her. It's no big deal," Tabitha said.

"I'm afraid, to Rogue, this is a big deal. She takes protecting your secrets very seriously and has done for years. She has protected your privacy for all this time, only slipping occasionally when pushed and feeling extremely guilty afterwards. And now, after carefully guarding your secrets for so long, her own trust has been betrayed. She is very hurt and extremely emotional that someone she thought she could trust has now broken her trust. I suggest you find this book and quickly before anyone else were to grab a hold of it and learn what secrets you may prefer to remain hidden. Oh and I would strongly suggest you do not read this book yourself. I believe whoever does read Rogue's diary, no matter how well of a liar they may be, will be seen through as clearly as if they were telling the truth. You have till midnight to return the book, or there will be consequences." The Professor said, before disappearing.

"What? Like extra chores or something?" Tabitha asked.

"Actually, there is only so long I can keep Rogue calm and collective." The Professor said.

"Can't you just knock her up or something? I'm sure Hank has-" Tabitha began to say.

"I will not tranquilise a student of mine who has every right to be upset at having her trust broken. What happens next will be of your own making now I strongly suggest you spend less time redirecting the blame and use your time to locate the missing diary. As I said, you have till midnight before Rogue leaves my office," the Professor said.

"She wouldn't," Kitty said, lifting her nails to her teeth, "would she?"

"She did reveal my secret earlier. And we all know Rogue's temper," Kurt said.

Tabitha growled, grabbing Remy by the collar of his coat which he had took back from Tabitha and wrapped around himself.

"Alright Cajun, you better start talking! Where is it?" Tabitha demanded to know.

Remy brushed Tabitha's hands off him and said: "As you saw petite, I don't have it an' I don't know where y' placed Rogue's journal. Best be retrancin' y' steps 'fore she breaks free from de Professor's grasp, non?" he said, beginning to walk away.

"That's it? Aren't you at all worried about what crap she's gonna spill about you?" Tabitha demanded to know.

Remy turned back to glance at the lot of them, a smirk on his face.

"I ain't got nothin' t' hide, though, from de sounds of it, there be somet'in' y' really don't want people knowin'. I look forward t' hearin' what dis be from Rogue herself," and with that, Remy took off down the corridor, Jamie in toe.

While the Professor was interrogating Tabitha and the others, Rogue was sat in the Professor's office, curled up in a ball and slowly rocking herself back and forth.

There was a knock on the door which made Rogue jump and look back over her shoulder.

"Hey," Scott said, poking his head in.

Rogue frowned, turning away from him.

"I thought you might want this back?" Scott said.

Rogue turned to glance at what Scott had in hand.

"My diary!" Rogue blurted out, jumping up and taking it off him. She was smiling in glee until a thought passed her mind. "Y' didn't?"

"No, no," Scott said scratching the back of his head. "I'm just returning it to you. It was Tabitha who took it."

"That no good-" Rogue began to rant, getting angry and ready to storm out of the room.

"Whoa, slow down there," Scott said, moving an arm out to block Rogue's path.

"Why? Why should ah let that blonde bimbo get away with this?" Rogue demanded to know.

"Because she's going to be in agony all night, that is, unless you say something," Scott said.

"OK, you lost meh there," Rogue said.

Scott took a seat in one of the chairs opposite the Professor's desk and Rogue did the same.

"Gambit saw Tabitha in your room and taking your book earlier," Scott explained.

"He did? Why didn't he say anythin'? Come get meh or whatever?" Rogue asked.

"Because he had an idea in mind on how to get your diary back and how to punish Tabitha and the others," Scott said.

"Others?" Rogue asked.

"Yeah, Kitty and Kurt helped her take the diary. They weren't as keen as Tabitha was taking your diary, but they wanted to know what you had wrote about them," Scott said.

"Oh," Rogue said.

"Yeah, kinda the talk of the mansion tonight. If you go out there, I reckon everyone's going to be asking you what you wrote about them," Scott said.

"Errr," Rogue said, slouching back in her chair. She thought for a moment before she said, "How come ya ain't asked meh what ah've wrote about ya? You sure ya ain't already looked?" Rogue demanded to know.

"No no, I swear I haven't looked. And, to answer your question, the reason why I haven't asked is because, well, I don't feel like I need to know," he said.

"You don't?" Rogue questioned.

"Well, yeah. If I started asking you questions like that, then I might as well start asking everyone what they know about me. Sure, you might have the advantage of knowing more about me than anyone else, but still. It just doesn't seem right," Scott said.

"Why? Ah mean, ya know ah know a lot of things about ya. Things ah probably shouldn't. Things ya don't want anyone else ta know. Why don't ya wanna know if ah know them or not?" Rogue asked.

"Because you've kept them quiet. Look, it's true that I don't practically like the idea of you knowing everything about me. I mean, you probably know all about how my parent's died and what my life was like before living here. That's something that I don't really want anyone knowing about because, well, somethings are just too hard to face. But, you don't make me face them. Anyone else would have questioned what it is I went through. How it was I survived or what it was like growing up without my brother my whole life then learning he was alive after so many years a part…. There's some things that I just don't want to relive or think about. But you… You don't need to ask. You've never asked about it. I don't know if it's because you know I don't want to talk about it, but you kept what you knew to yourself and, I'm guessing, if I ever did want to talk about it or know what it is you knew about me, well, you'd just tell me. Having something like that, someone like that, well… it's incredible. I guess because of that feeling, well, I didn't want to pry," Scott said.

"You… really think that?" Rogue asked.

"Yeah. You get to see people for who they are and experience what it is that's made them who they are. It's… rather comforting if you ask me. Not something to be scared of.

"So ya really not threatened by how much ah know 'bout ya?" Rogue asked.

"Well, I guess it does make me a bit more terrified of getting on the wrong side of you, but no. Even then, I trust you not to tell my secrets. I mean, you've kept quiet about it all this time. If that's not screaming out trust, I don't know what is," Scott said.

"Thanks Scott," Rogue said, feeling a little blush up her neck and smiling bashfully.

"No probs," Scott said.

"So, how did you end up with my diary? What did Remy do?" Rogue asked.

"Oh, he had Jamie walked into Tabitha with a load of books. Gambit snagged your book while they were sorting out the mess," Scott said.

"Remy. You mean, Remy," Rogue enforced.

Scott signed and rolled his eyes, "Yeah, I guess he's earnt that. Anyway, while I was heading back from the Professor's office, Remy tagged me along and had me wait outside the library so he could slip me your diary," Scott explained.

"He did?" Rogue asked.

"Yeah. He trusted me to give it back to you without reading it," Scott said.

"Huh, so he didn't read it either?" Rogue asked.

"No, not from what I saw. Hey, how come you seem to be more accepting to the fact that Gambit didn't read your diary?" Scott demanded to know.

"Remy and ah don't know. Ah guess 'cause he's a thief. He knows what it means ta have your treasures stolen from ya," Rogue said.

"Right, he's a thief. Don't you think, because of that, that's why he would have read your diary?" Scott asked.

"He's a thief with honour," Rogue said, raising her eyebrow. "And besides," Rogue said, tapping the side of her head, "ah already know he wouldn't do that."

Scott signed, looking down at his hands.

"Well, you have a lot more faith in him then I do," Scott said.

"Why are y' always so down on him? Is it just 'cause'a the trainin' sessions? Y' know he's a tease," Rogue said.

"It's not just that!" Scott stressed. "Something about the guy just gives me bad vibes. It just feels like he's always up to mischief. Always keeping secrets. Playing people like I just saw him do," Scott said, throwing his arm back, referring to outside the Professor's office. He sighed, pulling his arm back in. "I just wish I could see threw his lies."

"Ya know ah can't tell ya if he is or isn't keepin' secrets," Rogue said, leaning her head against her fist.

"That's just it as well! How many people is he corrupting? You lie for him. Jamie just lied for him. Me!" Scott snapped.

"Ah ain't ever lied for him an' he ain't ever forced meh ta lie. If ah have, then it's been outta mah own choice, just like ah'm guessin' ya ain't told Tabitha that you were waitin' outside, ready ta take mah diary from Remy?" Rogue asked.

Scott signed again, running his hands over his face.

"No. But that's just it. Because he did that, I just lied-"

"Come on Scott, get real. Y' weren't a saint before he showed up an' ya ain't one now. Remy, he just doesn't lie 'bout what he is. He knows he's sneaky. Knows he twist things ta make lies an' truths blur tagether till they become confusin'. That's just who he is. But, the one thing ah definitely know for sure is that he does these things for the right reasons. It might not be the way you'd go around things, but really, all he's after is the same results. Ya just gotta put a little faith in him. Do that, an' he'll probably let ya in a little more as ta what he's up ta. For example, ah'm guessin' ya didn't tear him a new one when he asked ya ta follow him an' just do what he says, did ya?" Rogue questioned.

"No," Scott said.

"An' in turn, ya got ta figure out what it was he was up ta. Sometimes, just lettin' go of that control ya need ta have an' trustin' someone ain't such a bad thing to do," Rogue said.

"You really think I'm controlling?" Scott asked.

Rogue shrugged.

"You have ta be. Ah mean, ya are leadin' a whole bunch'a crazy mutants after all. But still, lettin' go'a the rains every once in a while ain't that bad," Rogue said.

Scott signed again and Rogue watched him swallow something he really didn't want to.

"I guess I could ease up on him a bit," Scott said.

"Ya nevah did tell meh how he was makin' Tabitha suffer," Rogue said, smirking at getting through to Scott.

A smirk of his own grew on Scott's face.

"Well, when I was heading down here to return your book, I ran into the Professor. I gave him a quick summary of what had happened and the Professor said he'd see to Tabitha's punishment. I'm not too sure what happened after that, but I'm guessing, it's not going to be good," Scott said.

"Ah'll say," Rogue said, smirking.

The door to the Professor's office opened then and the Professor entered.

"Arrr Rogue, I'm glad your still here. Good to see you too Scott. I believe you have returned Rogue's diary?" The Professor questioned.

"Yeah, he did. Ya know who took it?" Rogue asked.

"Indeed. I do apologise that this happened to you Rogue. It was not right," the Professor said, moving to be behind his desk.

Rogue shrugged her shoulders, a smirk still playing on her face.

"From what ah've been told, no one's had the chance ta read it, so all's well. But tell meh, what sort of punishment are ya puttin' Tabitha through?" Rogue asked, her smirk only growing.

The Professor's smile grew too as he folded his hands under his chin.

"Their punishment is rather the reason why I am glad you are still here," the Professor said as he proceeded to tell Rogue about the pressure he'd placed on Tabitha to find Rogue's diary, which, obviously wouldn't happen as it was back in Rogue's possessions.

When midnight rolled around, Rogue left the Professor's office and began to head to her room. She managed to see Tabitha, Kitty and Kurt running to the Professor's office in a frenzy, obviously worked up over something. Rogue could guess what that was about and proceeded to take the stairs to her room, knowing the Professor was going to reveal how they had lost their evenings chasing after something lost which had already been found hours ago. It served them right for worrying her when she believed she had lost everyone's secrets.

As Rogue approached her room, she spotted Remy leaning against her door frame, waiting.

"Bonjour chérie. Interestin' night?" He asked.

Rogue raised her eyebrow at him, slightly amused.

"Could say that, though ah guess ya already know it was, huh, swamp rat?" Rogue asked.

Remy just shrugged his shoulders as Rogue came to open her bedroom door.

"Oh, an' thank ya for gettin' it back," Rogue said.

"Stealin' treasures be mon forte," Remy said.

"Ah know. An' just so your aware, ah haven't written anythin' 'bout ya or your family in here," Rogue said, lifting her diary up.

"Don't know if t' be insulted or not," Remy admitted.

"When ah've got ya hangin' 'round meh twenty hour seven, who needs ta write anythin' down?" Rogue questioned, smiling at Remy before she entered her room and closed the door behind her.
