You Only Die Twice

She was flustered, clearly affected by his presence and the touch of his hand on hers. She was stammering, gushing a little, at the fact that he had noticed her at all.

He watched her walk away, realizing that he felt no attraction whatsoever to her. It startled him a little, but not too much. Mainly he was just confused.

What was her name, anyway? June, he thought Billy had called her. She must be filling in from the temp pool for Leon.

It was an interesting development that he, the Scarecrow, wasn't interested. She was too young for him, for one thing.

"I almost dropped my teeth when I saw the dead woman's name," he had told Francine in Billy's office, but that didn't begin to cover it. When the report of Amanda's suicide had come in, he had been sitting down, so no one had noticed him lose consciousness - but things had definitely gone black for a second or two.

If that meant financing and carrying her groceries, that was fine by him. He even got to share a bag of popcorn with her.

If it meant arriving in on a helicopter to go crawling through the ductwork of murderers, he was okay with that. He hadn't needed a map, either, once he'd heard her name. He just followed her voice.

If it meant risking his life by gunshot or being crushed to death to run to untie her in a quarry, he would do that, gladly.

He even went grocery shopping for her, himself.

He drew the line at letting her fly the helicopter, though.
