Building Rooftop
A few minutes later...
"Have you found any other way inside the building, Rei?"
"Not that I have seen; the entry on the roof is barred shut."
Yuuki could only mutter an expletive curse under her breath at their bad luck. They were stuck outside in the downpour in the middle of an open rooftop, where someone could easily pick either of them off from the nearby buildings.
Once again, the redhead surveyed her surroundings to see if anything at all could be used as a means to make a tool or at least increase their chances of not getting sniped from a distance.
Seeing nothing of significance outside of random rubble or garbage. She then thought back on the small cache of supplies they brought before leaving the farmstead.
A flashlight wasn't going to be much help unless she wanted to entice unwanted attention. The map they have been using is more likely waterlogged and ruined in her pocket. The Smith and Wesson M37 air weight revolver given to them by Asami certainly wasn't going to do anything to help the situation unless both redheads resolved to commit suicide together.
Nor could they go back down the fire escape to the streets below as the zombies in the alleyway tightly plugged the narrow passage to the very brim with undead bodies.
Seeing how alternatives were minimal, Yuuki opened her mouth to convey her mounting frustration before emitting a deep sigh before saying. "Looks like we have no choice other than to play Russian roulette, Miyamoto..."
Rei stares at her survival companion with a sharp questioning gaze; a skeptical frown forms on her face at the lingo usage. She knew what that phrase meant and that generally meant something hazardous to either of them or both of them. "What do you mean, Miku?" Rei questioned. "You better have an amazing idea because I know I'm not going to be some meat bag for you to use!" She barked with some growing animosity. Her eyes narrowed a bit, giving Yuuki the third degree.
She could still recall with perfect clarity the number of people Shido exploited and discarded with no regard to try to save his own worthless life before the zombies still got their pound of flesh from him.
Yuuki could only stare back with a look of sheer annoyance firmly upon her face with her right brow twitching. "Didn't I tell you to keep the retardation down? I'm talking about the window that wasn't tightly boarded up from the inside on our way up here. You know the one that had a few zombies pressed against the glass like a bunch of bobbleheads on crack?" was her more blunt response with a bit of heat laced in behind her words.
Thinking back, Rei could only look a tad sheepish in her chagrin. Of course, Yuuki wasn't going to pull a Shido. Still, after everything that happened over the months, it's hard not to have your head on a swivel even against those you trust.
The Idea of messing with zombies, even some within a closed room, wasn't something to take lightly, but what other choice did they have at this juncture?
"Right... I'll dig the revolver out from my pack, and I'll meet you downstairs."
After making their way down the fire escape once more, the duo made their way to a large, unbarred glass window that still had the blood smears from its former owners that were more likely still shuffling about within the darkroom.
Taking off her long sleeve shirt, Yuuki ties the bottom closed before reaching into Rei's backpack and starts to fill it up with various canned goods to act like a brace that could protect her from getting bit. After filling the shirt up, she fastens the sleeves around her forearms into a makeshift shield with her holding it upward against her tank-top clad chest.
She then got into a kneeling position and tried to dig her heels the best she could onto the slick wet railing before saying. "I'll break the window. The noise inside will bring them to us; I'll act like a prop and try to keep them from swarming us. Remember to stay calm, Miyamoto, and you got five shots to use before you have to reload."
"Do you have to be the one to do this? I mean, you fought off a horde to get us up here, and don't try to false bravado me that you aren't completely exhausted."
"I'm the strongest one physically between us. And you're the better shot. This is the only option that will maximize our chances, not saying you aren't strong in your own right. Why let the horrible shooter be the one to control the gun?"
Arching her arms back to ready herself to break the window frame, Rei calls out behind her to hold her attack. "Hold on one moment, Yuuki, before you start."
"What is it, Miyamoto?" She questioned.
Quickly Rei reaches for the velcro straps and prises off the bulletproof vest from her chest Before going over and fastening it to her partner's body for added security. "You'll need this more than me. It should help stop them from biting into your sides during the struggle."
"Good thinking Rei. Now, are you ready?"
She takes a moment to get into a proper shooting stance and points the revolver at the window before saying. "Go ahead, Miku."
Once again, Yuuki arches her arms back and swings forth the shirt-filled safeguard into the glass frame that emits a sizeable glass-like crash as bits and pieces of the frame go flying everywhere.
"Alright, that should rally up the homeowners..."
It usually takes a zombie only a few moments to make its way to any source of racket or sound; what either girl didn't consider is that the zombies wanted to flip the script this time around.
"Rraahhhh!"
"The fu-!?"
Not one, not two, but six famished corpses thrust themselves out of the darkness in a frenzied agitated state.
"Oh, fuck you guys. Of course, the entire fucking family is going to come for the meet and greet at the same damn time!" Yuuki says with an exasperated grunt as she digs herself in for the long haul.
They swiped their boney fingers and snapped their half-rotted jaws as the group pushed roughly into Yuuki's makeshift shield as she felt her muscles spasm from the hasty charge with the way she restrained herself from getting pushed back slightly.
"Anyday now, Miyamoto!"
Jumping a little from the command. Rei takes aim and fires; the first bullet buzzes past Yuuki's head and gives one of the undead a glancing blow that seems to make the group even more hectic.
"Quit flirting with them and shoot!"
She fires once more, scoring a headshot that causes one of them to hit the floor with a hard thump.
"Good job, now five more to go with three more bullets!"
She quickly pulled the trigger, letting the bullets fly as three more dropped to the ground with a moan-like groan.
"I can hold them, reload quickly!"
Hurriedly, she flips open the chamber and dumps the empty casings onto the ground below them as she reaches into a side pocket on her backpack for the .38 special bullets and starts to reload her gun.
"Uurrggaahssh!"
"Need to hurry Rei, sounds like more of them is coming!"
"Patience is a probity, ya know!"
"Tell that to them after they tear my ass apart!"
She closes the chamber and quickly snaps the revolver at the last two remaining zombies before squeezing the trigger and putting them down with the rest of them.
Too bad the undead wasn't done with them yet.
More rotted bodies came forth from the darkroom, even more, greedy than the last, as some even started to bite onto the shirt shaking their heads back and forth, liken to a rabid dog foaming at the mouth. Wildly was their swiping and clawing at anything or everything within reach.
"Here we fucking go again!"
This time Rei didn't pause as she again took aim and put three more of them down.
"After these two, I think that'll be the last of them!"
"Good, I'm almost out of ammo after I reload."
Scoring two more headshots, the last of the herd hit the ground with a thump as both young ladies strain their hearing to pick up any other sound within the room before they slowly relax.
"Looks like we win this round. Get the flashlights out so we can see what this place has to offer."
Building Interior...
Scanning the interior of the room with the light of the flashlight. Both gave a slight squeal of delight as they hit the motherload, with it being a well-stocked flat.
"Well, this trip isn't a complete flop outside of everyone wanting to kill us."
Yuuki brought the light to the front door to see that it was heavily barred with wooden boards, a few bookcases, a kitchen table, and a large black sofa pressed tightly against the door."
"Let us check all the rooms before we start looting. I know we want to change out of these wet clothes." Yuuki states as she gives one of the bedroom doors a hard thump to see if anything will come knocking.
"Right." Rei agrees as she walks towards what she could assume is the bathroom and mimics the same action with her knocking on the door.
After waiting with bated breath, they both open the door.
Nothing out of the ordinary in the bedroom, outside of a large bed and a dresser that sat against the wall.
While Rei wasn't as fortunate.
"Ugh! Something died in here!"
"You been through worst, Miyamoto. Don't be a pussy."
"Excuse me for having a sense of smell!"
Closing the door, Yuuki walks into the kitchen and opens the cupboards. Each one was filled to the brim with soups and other can goods that would help their group out for quite a while.
But one question did come to mind, though, if this flat was sealed off like it was, how did everyone die in here? Zombies can't climb, and the front door shows no signs of forced entry. Yet, it had a mini horde of corpses squatting in here.
"Oi, Miyamoto, did you find anything in the bathroom?"
"Nope, just two people in the tub with gunshot wounds to the head."
"Since it looks clear in here, let us go find some clothes and camp out here for the night."
Both ladies couldn't wait to partake in the Idea of dry clothes and a warm bed.
"Man, it feels good to wear something that doesn't cling to every part of me."
"That I can fully agree with Miyamoto."
After going through the closets and dressers for a change of clothes, Rei picks out a simple white T-shirt and shorts as Yukki goes with a buttoned-up pajama shirt and pajama bottoms.
"Before we turn in for the night, give me a hand with moving this dresser against the door." With the short-haired redhead making a gesture to the dresser in question.
"Why?" Rei asked.
"It's better to be safe than sorry." was Yuuki's initial response.
Walking over and grabbing a side of the dresser, they pick it up slightly and move it to the bedroom door before pushing flush against the door frame.
Going into a stretch before rubbing her left shoulder in a bid to release some of the mounting strain. Yuuki walks back over to the large bed with Rei at her side before pulling back the covers and getting into bed before pulling the covers over her body.
"I don't know about you, Miyamoto, but I think I had enough death-defying absurdity for one day."
"Me and you both, Miku..."
"Only thing missing is a blond stud to cuddle with during the night~."
"Are you still hung up on trying to get with Sensei?"
"It's not being "hung up," Rei, were both in a world where finding good men will become a rarity. You, of all people, should know when you lost Hisashi on the roof of the school."
The recollection of Hisashi causes Rei to wince from the memory. In her hearts of hearts, she knew Igou died too quickly; he deserved a better destiny than to die needlessly.
When she put some thought into it, everyone deems women as nothing more than breeding stock. No different if you were to pick up a slab of meat in exchange for some coin from a vendor.
She shivered ever so slightly to herself, reminiscing the times of those near close calls of nearly getting kidnapped...
Outside of fretting about half-devoured cadavers ending your life, or that looming peril of being restrained to a wall and being molested or raped by some crazed person that thinks he could play the part of Noah. Everyone had their absurd repopulation plan. And she didn't want to be any part of some guy's stable to be used and abused until broken of all guise of individuality.
In the end, Naruto was the glue that kept them together. Without his guidance and his endless optimism, there was no way of knowing if she would've survived this long without him.
Looking over at her survival companion, Rei could see she was already sleeping with the way she heard the telling sign of snoring.
Lay back into the mass of pillows, Rei pulls the covers over herself and allowed the fatigue of the entire adrenaline-fueled day to carry her off into the realm of dreams.
AND CUT!
A little short and sweet to help set up for the next chapter as it will shift back over to the rest of the group on the farmstead.
