"Doctor?" I called out as I walked into the console room. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, the Doctor flashed strands of loose wires sticking out of the floor with his sonic screwdriver.
"Victoria," he glanced up in surprise. He placed his sonic screwdriver alongside an arrangement of other tools and stood up. "Everything alright?" I walked up a ramp and met him at the console.
"Yeah, everything's great", I replied.
"That's good, yesterday must have been a bit of a shock for you," he paused for a moment before reaching into his pocket. "Anyway, here's this back," he said, handing me my bag.
I smiled at him gratefully while putting my arms through the straps.
"Thank you for letting me stay for the night. I really appreciate it, Doctor. But I think it's time for me to head home", I said.
"Where to?" he said, looking up at me from his spot by the monitor.
"Cardiff, August 2019, please," I said, gripping the railing in preparation for the flight.
"Don't you want to say bye to Rose and Jack?" he questioned as he walked around the console, hitting buttons.
"I don't want to wake them up," I said, shaking my head "Just tell them that I said bye, would you?" He hummed in response, pulling a lever down before turning around to face me.
I reached out, prepared to hug him in thanks, before deciding against it. Instead, I smiled at him while gripping the straps of the bag. "Thank you for everything. Take Rose and Jack somewhere fantastic" I walked to the doors, but just before opening the door, I looked over my shoulder and sent him one last smile "Goodbye, Doctor".
Once I walked out, I patted the door of the TARDIS before walking into the first alley I was able to find. I listened for the wheeze of the TARDIS, and once I was sure it was gone, I took off my bag and pulled out my vortex manipulator and strapped it to my arm. I looked at the date stamp on the screen and couldn't help but gape. He had left me in Cardiff alright, but it was May 2021. I know I shouldn't be surprised, but a girl can hope, can't she? Perhaps one day he'll learn how to properly fly the ship.
I shook my head, putting the correct date into the screen. I glanced around briefly before hitting the button on the vortex manipulator, preparing myself for the intense feeling of moving through the time vortex. The jump hadn't lasted long, but I was relieved to see Jack and Ianto rushing over to me as I stumbled out of the Time Vortex.
"Dad! Pops!" I smiled, pulling them into a tight hug. "I'm so glad to see you. This past month has been… so long."
"I'm proud of you," Jack said, looking me over to make sure that I was okay.
"Did I actually help?" I asked him, looking up at him. I felt his fingers run through my hair slowly, trying to comfort me.
"More than you'll ever know", Jack replied.
"I missed both of you, and I missed my Doctor and Rose. It just… it wasn't the same," I told him, pulling back to look up at him.
"Well, I'm here now. And I can have the Doctor here for you as soon as you want," Jack said, but I shook my head.
"Not quite yet. Why not have a nice, calming day together, just the three of us?" I asked, looking between my parents with a grin.
"What did you have in mind?" he counter questioned.
"How about a relaxing day for once?" I suggested.
I sighed contently as I looked out at the sun as it set in front of us. We had hailed a taxi and went to Sully Bay, a nearby beach, to have a picnic. We had gotten to the beach an hour before sunset, and I ate while my parents told me of their more recent work. "I really needed this," I said, taking a sip of my wine.
"I'm glad we got to see you, we don't get to see you nearly as much as we'd like," Ianto looked at me over his glass.
"I'm sorry, I promise I'll visit more. It's just… Rose doesn't know you're still alive, so it makes it hard to get me here without question." I said, looking at my dad with a frown.
"It's fine, sweetheart," Jack said, placing his hand on my shoulder as he took a sip of his drink.
"But, there is something I need to talk to you about," I said before finishing off the rest of my wine. "I've been thinking, quite a lot actually, and I think I'm ready. I'm going to open the watch soon, and I wanted you two to be the first to know my decision. I didn't want you to be surprised when I come back and I'm different."
Jack reached out and gripped my free hand tightly in his. "No matter how different you may be, we'll always love you, and you'll always be our daughter."
We sat in silence after that, tears welling quietly in my eyes as we watched the sunset illuminate the sky. "I love both of you so much," I whispered.
"We love you too," Ianto smiled, kissing my temple.
"And someone else does too," Jack said, looking over my shoulder.
I looked back to see the TARDIS sitting on a cliff about one hundred feet away. We watched as the Doctor peaked through the doors before meeting my gaze. He grinned and stepped out, sticking his hands in his overcoat's pocket. "I didn't know you had called him," I said, looking between my parents with a small grin.
"I needed to talk to him about a few things. I also wasn't expecting him to get here on time," my dad said, looking down at his watch. I let out a snicker while standing up.
"I guess that is my cue. I promise I'll stop by soon," I told them, pulling each of them into a hug.
"Bye, love you!" I waved to them while moving to meet the Doctor.
"Doctor!" I called out with a grin. Once I was in arm's reach, he picked me up and pulled me into a tight hug.
"Vie, I've missed you," He whispered in my ear, pulling me close.
"I've missed you too, Theta," I told him, setting my head on his shoulder, relishing in his grip.
After a few moments, I pulled back just enough to look him in the eyes. "How long have I been gone?"
"Only a few days," he said, setting me down on the ground.
"You go on ahead, I need to go talk to your dad really quickly. I'll just be a mo," he said before walking off towards my parents. I walked through the door and up to the console to see Rose sitting on the jump seat waiting for me.
"Victoria!" Rose smiled up at me, holding her arms out to ask for a hug.
"Rose, I'm glad to see you!" I grinned, sitting down next to her and pulling her into a hug.
"Oh, I missed you! Boy, do I have a lot to tell you. While you were gone, mum got mixed up with an alien!" Rose exclaimed, and I looked at her in surprise.
"Someone went after your mum?"
"Yeah, there was this guy, Elton Pope, and he was working with this group, LINDA I think it was called, and they were looking for the Doctor. One way or another, he was tasked with getting close to my mum because I knew him. Luckily, we made it just in time to stop this alien that was tricking the group. We couldn't stop it from absorbing most of the group, but the Doctor was able to bring out the girl that Elton was in love with. So it ended somewhat nicely for the man."
I shook my head in shock. "Of course I'd miss that. Is your mum okay?"
Rose nodded. "Oh yeah, she's doing fine. After everything was said and done, we got to spend the day together while the Doctor did some repairs around the TARDIS."
"It's always nice getting to spend time with family," I said, and she grinned. "Which reminds me. How the hell did you end up in the London Blitz?"
I blinked a few times as I thought about her sentence. Spending time with my parents had taken my mind off of the last month, and was surprised by the reminder. There was no way I could tell her the truth, and I swallowed roughly as I tried to think of a lie.
"Well, off we go!"
I could barely contain the relief that I felt when the Doctor came back into the TARDIS. As I looked back at him, I grinned while he winked, showing that he had arrived to see that I was beginning to flounder.
"Before we go, I've been meaning to give this to you," he said, looking around the console for something. "I mean, you did most of the work, but I needed to add a few things." When he found what he was looking for, he let out a cheer and walked up to me.
"Is that my sonic screwdriver?" I asked, becoming giddy. He nodded his head and held out his hand. "Ta-da!"
I grabbed the sonic out of his hand with a grin and inspected the device. He had let me help him with most of the wiring inside but had told me he had a few secret things he needed to add to it before I could use it. He had put the workings inside of a thin black tube with two buttons, a small light on top, and a slider between the buttons.
"Try it out," he nudged me, nodding to one of the screens on the console. I moved the slider up and down, looking for the right setting. When I found it, I pressed one of the buttons, turning the device one. With a whirring noise similar to the Doctor's and the light turning on, I pointed it at the screen, causing it to turn on.
"It works!" I grinned, waving it at him.
"You made a sonic?" Rose asked, walking up to me. I held it out for her to hold, and smiled as she gripped it lightly. "That's so cool," she grinned.
"Alright, Vie has a sonic and I'm feeling adventurous today. What do you guys think, let's go random? Why not let the TARDIS choose?
"What do you mean you're feeling adventurous today? When aren't you feeling adventurous?" I teased, poking him in the chest with my sonic as I moved around him.
"Oh, hush you," he said, flashing me a bright grin as he flew around the console, hitting buttons and flipping switches. "Hold on!"
I reached forward and grabbed onto the railing as the TARDIS shifted drastically to one side. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the Doctor frowning slightly at the monitor.
Upon materializing, he grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the ship, Rose close behind me. "I dunno what's wrong with her, she's sort of... queasy. Indigestion, like she didn't wanna land," he answered, checking the box over from the outside.
"Oh, if you think there's gonna be trouble, we could always get back inside and go somewhere else…" Rose trailed off, looking seriously between the Doctor and me before we all laughed. There was no way in hell that'd we'd miss out on an adventure.
