"Sunday morning, I'm waking up/Can't even focus on a coffee cup/Don't even know whose bed I'm in/Where do I start? Where do I begin?" - The Chemical Brothers
Waking up, Amity couldn't tell where she was at first. The room looked familiar enough but not. Her vision was hazy at first until everything began to fall back into place. She recognized the bookshelf, the posters, and the cute wind chime she had hung last week that was now clistening from the top of the window. It was indeed her room.
She found a coffee cup on her nightstand, which she fumbled at first to grab, but thankfully didn't spill any. She avidly drank it, the dark liquid at the perfect temperature soothing her and allowing her to regain more of her senses. She breathed in the fumes and let out a deep exhale as the rest of things and events fell back into place. She remembered the maze from their dream, a laugh, a shattered mirror, and hands reaching towards her, but that was it. She did have a vague memory of being in some temple she recognized as one from a book Luz had about Egypt, but it was hazy at best.
She looked over and found Luz lying on the floor in a sleeping bag. Next to her was an empty cup with coffee stains reaching up to the rim. Had she brought them coffee, drank hers, and then immediately fallen back asleep? Isn't this coffee stuff supposed to wake you up? Didn't matter. Amity knew what Luz had been doing for her, and smiled. She placed her cup back on the nightstand, got out of bed, and laid down next to her, holding her close, which Luz did the same instinctively despite remaining asleep.
Whatever happened, it didn't matter now. For now, they could rest and not worry about any more awful dreams...at least until the next night.
Epilogue
Boscha found herself flying through the black infinity of space. Numerous celestial bodies flew past her as she drifted with no end in sight. She wondered how she had gotten here, but it didn't really matter. Eventually, off in the distance, a small yellow planet materialized and grew closer and closer with each passing moment. Boscha then realized she was indeed flying closer to it, entering its atmosphere. The air felt oppressive and very thin. The sun beamed bright through the dry heat. Eventually, she found herself hovering before landing across a large dusty expanse where before her stood a massive yellow city. Its towers loomed high and contored into angles she didn't think would have been geometrically possible. In the distance, she heard the soft, soprano and alto hums of a multitude of voices. It sounded pretty enough at first but some of the notes seemed off and a bit ominous, so much so that she knew if she listened to this tune for too long, she would go mad. Another soft disembodied voice whispered in her ear: "Welcome to Carcosa."
She woke up in a cold sweat. Another nightmare. She almost questioned why she kept having these but then she realized why. It had to have been related to what happened a few months ago with that deserted house. It didn't help that she had the paranoid feeling of things that could be watching her, and another one of these thoughts began to enter her head. She got up, dressed, and proceeded to stare in the mirror, trying to focus on herself and not on whatever could be in her peripherals.
"There's nothing there," she told herself, "Nothing in the mirror, nothing in the shadows, nothing following you. You're okay, and you can take on whatever the day throws at you because you're amazing." She breathed heavily while closing and reopening her eyes. She allowed herself to look in the reflection again and look around the corners of her room at the darker corners, in her closet, and under her bed. Nothing there but the same room to which she was accustomed. Her hair tie felt unusually tight today, and it was hard to readjust as she walked downstairs and grabbed some buttered toast off the kitchen table, holding it in her mouth while she undid and redid it twice.
The sun beamed down in warm, welcoming, albeit somewhat oppressive rays as she walked towards Hexside. She checked her message scroll to see if Skara had returned any of her texts. No new messages to be found. The tree branches seemed louder than usual as a light breeze wafted through the leaves and caused them to rattle together. For some reason, it reminded her of the sound of wood and linoleum bits clattering together as they fell to the ground, a house collapsing to give way to some monstrosity that was hiding beneath it.
No, she wouldn't let herself remember that. She was better than that; she was better than anyone and would recover from this. Only peasants with weak minds would let themselves succumb to these memories, and she refused to let it overtake her again.
She wondered about Mattholomule for a moment. Since the abandoned house incident, he had recovered from his catatonic state but still wasn't ready to face the outside world. He may have been an uncouth loser, but she didn't wish this on him. She could only hope he would get better soon. Maybe when he did, the two of them could spend time together and...No, what was she thinking, associating with the likes of him? Still, she didn't want to dismiss the idea. Maybe he could take visitors and she could help him recover in some way. What was this, her being nice to someone else? She decided she could have him owe her a favor if that was the case. That's what she decided to tell herself anyway.
In all this whirlwind of thought, she didn't realize she had finally reached Hexside before her feet hit the bricks to the oncoming walkway. The building seemed to loom over her, more ominous than it had ever been in the past. People walked this way and that through the entrance, accompanied by the usual sounds of lockers opening and the chatter of morning gossip.
After gathering her things, she looked in the first room and found that Skara wasn't there. In fact, none of the Bard Coven students were. This was too weird for her, so she decided to head to the music room after class and see if any of them were there. As she approached, she heard the familiar sound of the otherworldly singing from her dream, and a wave of dread she never knew she could feel washed over her.
She opened the door and stood aghast at the sight of the room. The bard students were tossing yellow paint all over the walls, while others were tracing the weird squiggly sign she had seen in her dreams months ago. Looking at it still hurt her head for some reason. Some other students were painting the same sign across all the desks as well as their uniforms and faces. One was using a small amount of fire magic to etch it on the roof of another student's mouth.
"Ooooh Boscha," she heard Skara say in a dreamy, sleepy sing song voice, "glad you could come…" She then arose to her feet, causing her doting boyfriend to fall lazily on the floor; he didn't really move from that point, lethargically rolling back and forth. Skara slowly walked towards her usually choleric friend, Skara's eyes being glazed over and slowly blinking as if she were waking from some dream. "We have seen a higher truth…and it is YELLOW!…We wish our uniform matched your potions uniform. In fact all uniforms should have been YELLOW! And best of all, there is a KING in YELLOW, and he has such sights to show us! So, my dear friend Boscha, I'm sure this is a rhetorical question since you looked around the room…have you seen the yellow sign?"
The End?
A/N: At long last, this story is finally done. This started off as wanting to mix Owl House with other like things, especially my love for how surreal Yume Nikki was, as well as trying to cope with one of my nightmares. I did try and adjust things to canon in the show, trying not to write too far and get something wrong later. I didn't even know Lumity would be a thing when I started this story, but when it came up, I tried to work it into the narrative. I always feel shipping comes second to the overall story and theme. And of course, I ended it with Luz retreading Randolph Carter's path in "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath," which to be honest is a slog to read, so I wanted to make it something more digestible to fans of Owl House and fanfic readers overall. I hope you enjoyed this, and thank you all for sticking with me 'til the end. I've got one more fanfic that I'm writing, which is a Miraculous story, then I'm hoping to focus on more original writing, as I'm hoping to eventually get published. I'm currently doing video game and tabletop game reviews that I share among friends, so I might do that as well to the mass public. Again, hope you all enjoyed and that you enjoy season 2B which comes out tomorrow at the time of this writing. Have a good evening, and sweet dreams.
