Jodi thanked Burt. She let the audience know this was the time to ask questions if they had any. Nancy came back to that side to help answer any. Most of the questions were about the graboids themselves and possibilities that could have been but wouldn't happen at the time. Some about why it took so long for Graboids to resurface again. Jodi had to wrap up the questions from the audience, as they were going to cross into the last event. She let them have a break as they were going to setup for the memorial.
The town of Perfection put away the chairs and setup a screen and projector. Pictures of Edgar, Old Fred, Jim and Megan Wallace, Nestor Cunningham, Walter Chang and the names of those were who also killed by Graboids up until the present day. The audience watched them. When it got through the first round, Jodi started to speak. She kept her voice low as she spoke about each person from Perfection that had their lives taken. She gave small summaries of their lives. She touched based about the rest of the people who lost their lives, stating about how some were adventurous, were parents, and so forth. Jodi asked for a moment of silence out of respect. She ended the service with playing the song about if the other person would remember them. It was a touching memorial. Some of the audience members started to cry.
After the song was over, Jodi thanked them again. People started to disperse while some stayed a few minutes longer before leaving as well. Since it was an all-day event, it was finally getting dark outside. The guests thanked their hosts, bought some souvenirs, and some asked a few more questions.
Casey, Rose, and Cletus were in a group together talking about the town and the scientific discoveries. Roger, Harlowe, and Tyler were chatting over a few beers. Nancy and Lucas were at a table of their own. His hands were clasped over hers. Jodi, Burt, and Wes made sure the rest of the town got out safe. Twitchell was the last one to leave. Larry headed back to his trailer. He was too tired to mingle with the others as he went past his limit cooking and cleaning.
"That was a long day but it was amazing," Jodi beamed.
Burt had his hands on his hips. "It did go a lot better than I thought. El Blanco didn't even bother them and they kept within guidelines."
"That means we can host the other three days!" Jodi looked up to him. Burt looked away. He knew she was excited.
"It was great, I learned a lot," Wes agreed. "Mom did talk about some, not a whole lot. Going to the places, hearing how the events unfold, and then yours and Nancy's point of view, that was a lot to take in. All of you went through so much."
There was silence between all of them.
"Are you three going to stay out there all night?" Nancy called from the door. "Come back in." The three did as they were told.
Tyler handed them beers. "You deserve these."
"Hell yeah we did," Jodi started chugging hers. "Ah!" She wiped her mouth in satisfaction. She sure needed that. The three stared with wonder. Tyler and Wes chuckled while Burt shook his head. "I'll do the numbers tomorrow to see how we did but I bet it was great."
Casey and Rose let out loud, genuine laughs as Cletus was telling them a story with the help of his hands. Wes had a grin growing. Jodi, Tyler, and Burt directed their attention to him. He had the beer bottle up to his lips when he noticed them.
"She's had a rough two weeks," Wes took a sip.
"Ugh, you've had a rough two weeks," Tyler wanted to know what was going on between them. If they're acting like this and sleep in the same place. "You almost died by a near fatal injury and was life flighted."
"Yes, but I was cured and had to recover," Wes explained. "Perform some physical therapy, take lots of medicine, and now have a weird immunity from whatever those creatures were when they scraped me. She, well, let's just say it was worse than mine."
"You know about the Land Rover, second helicopter, and black semi-truck and trailer?" Burt had just taken a drink.
"I knew about the first two, but not the third," Wes glanced at her. "Though, she did update what happened while I was gone, so the semi-truck makes sense and we will probably see it more often."
"More often?" Burt raised his voice just a bit. "That does not sound good."
"It doesn't, but it needs to be done," Wes let out a sigh. "I'll be happy when it's done."
"Same here," Burt agreed. The three stared at him. He stared back at the others. "I meant that the government wouldn't be infringing on our domain, again." He shook his head. He didn't mean that he would be happy when Wes left.
Tyler chuckled. "We knew what you meant."
It wasn't until late in the night that everyone started to disperse. Lucas stayed the night with Nancy. El Blanco made it's usual night time rounds. Everything was just another day in the land of sand and sagebrush.
Jodi woke up a bit groggy since she exhausted herself yesterday. She still needed to wake up early and take care of the market. She sat behind the counter sipping coffee while trying to figure out how much they made.
Larry came in around noon. He brought in his laptop. The two had lunch together as he showed her the photographs, videos, reviews, and suggestions from all of the audience. It was a great event. There were several suggestions about statues to take pictures with, stone memorials, an actual museum, a donation box to help fund these, and once it gets popular enough to have more days leading up it.
"Lots of great reviews and several suggestions," Larry was ecstatic but his smile turned into a yawn. He stretched. "I did not know that it was going to be this busy but seeing the success it was well worth it."
"We should start planning for these. I like having a separate museum, that way it can be open all the time and we can charge the most three dollars or donations," Jodi took a bite out of her food. She started to jot down some notes. "Mm." She was going to speak but she just kept devouring her food until it was halfway gone. "Okay. Let's draw up some ideas and examples for the memorials. Nancy can work on the statues. If we get enough, have the sculpture already made, the cost might be cheaper but that's still a lot."
"How much does a bronze statue cost?" Larry took a gulp of water.
"Starting price is sixty thousand," Jodi kept writing down notes.
Larry started to cough. He took another drink to sooth his throat. "What about a marble statue?"
"The same price," Jodi glance at the laptop.
"We did not make near enough for that, but we could try a funding page people could donate to," Larry suggested.
"Yes, only after we have what design we like," Jodi agreed. "I also have some sites to use. Not the ones most people use since they take a percentage of your profits. Stone memorial will have to be the same or we could put it in the museum. That one we will have to think about more."
There wasn't anyone who was coming into the market besides the town folk. It did allow the two of them toss ideas around and rest up. Tyler came in to see how they did. They even asked for his opinion on some of the suggestions. Larry grabbed the list of reviews about his tours. Tyler read over it, nodding his head at some while smiling at others.
Lucas left Nancy's house. He kissed her on the cheek and peeled out. Nancy shook her head as she headed over to Chang's. She saw the three at counter discussing and reviewing the comments on the social media sites. She was about to head over to them when she saw Melvin's rig. She groaned, inwardly. Nancy headed over to the group quickly before he saw.
"Melvin's coming in," Nancy's hushed tone made them stay quiet as well. "Hide these things."
Larry grabbed the papers, shoved them in his laptop, closed it, placed the empty plates on it, and headed to the kitchen. "I'll do the dishes, don't worry."
Jodi headed over to the register. Melvin came in, he looked around before settling on Jodi. She gave her best customer service smile. "Hello, what can I help you with?"
Melvin smiled, "it's a bit quiet in here from yesterday."
"Yeah, it sure is," Jodi nodded as she glanced around.
"I was just wondering, why didn't you ask me to participate," Melvin got straight to the point. "I was there too."
"That's because you were a little turd then and you're a little turd now," Burt stepped through the threshold.
Melvin turned towards him. "Good afternoon, Burt. I've grown and matured. You're making this place popular. I can help with that. Having someone like me could have helped boosted your numbers. Especially hearing my side of the story. They can see how far I have come."
Burt started to walk past him. "Like I said, a little turd then, a little turd now."
"If Patricia sales that home to that cute Rose, she will tell all her friends and those friends will tell others and so on," Melvin explained. "More requests for housing in this area. More people mean you're going to need a realtor, that's me."
Burt paused. He tried not to get too annoyed but he just rolled his eyes and walked away.
"Come on, Burt, you know I am right," Melvin called. "People want to hear my story."
Burt turned to face him. "Your story? Do enlighten the rest of us about your story. Are you going to talk about how you have no respect for the property around you and the people, or what about every chance you got, you decided to scare everyone you could, and didn't take anything serious, especially when we were dealing with the first graboid attack."
"Burt, come on," Melvin felt defeated. "I was a teenager. I was alone. I had to do something to keep me entertained. You, Val, Earl, and Nestor all wanted to kick my ass but none of you ever did. You all should have. I probably needed it. My story would have also touched their hearts. Me, a teenager, who was left in a trailer alone, weeks on end, especially during the summer, so his parents could blow all their money in Las Vegas and think they could win big or win back everything that they lost. How I didn't care about others since no one cared about me. How Nancy tried to be a mother to me and I didn't appreciate that. How you four became stand in fathers. How Walter was like a grandparent when my grandparents didn't even feel bad for their grandson stuck in the middle of nowhere. I saw Nestor getting sucked down from the inside of that tire. Do you know how much it messed me up? I think it is every right that my story should get told as wel2l."
Jodi felt sympathy for him. It must have been tough going through all that. She did think Melvin did deserve his story gets to be told. She made a mental note remind herself to let him speak next time. If they did get to do more days, they could have several speakers, tours, and some other activities.
Burt let out a sigh. "You're right." Melvin smiled. "However, this isn't some National Park that you can pop up more homes and shops at any time with a high dollar price. You can scare off the wolves, elk, moose, and bison, but scaring off El Blanco, no, he's going to come to you because of it. This isn't walking on your back porch sipping coffee to see wildlife grazing in the early mornings, this is swimming in the ocean, hoping the local predator doesn't eat you since you look like a fat seal!" He headed off on that note.
Melvin was defeated again. He looked to Jodi. "What do you think?"
Jodi thought about it for a moment. "Well, there are pros and cons. El Blanco owns this town. You have to think if its going to be beneficial for you or El Blanco. More people, well if they don't follow the rules, they're just instant meals, and if they die, is the family going to resale the house again, let it go to the bank, and then will the bank sell it. You have to think your actions through all the way to know how much it is going to impact the world around you."
Melvin wanted her to be on his side. "I was hoping you would be on my side. Anyways, I wanted to extend the invite to my golf club that is holding its annual event." He handed her an envelope of tickets. "Just make sure everyone gets a ticket, even that cute Rose." He winked at her before leaving.
"Oh, thank…you?" Jodi took it and raised her eyebrows. Melvin got into his vehicle and headed out. Jodi headed over to the restaurant side where the others were curious. Larry came out with a sandwich and fries for Burt.
"What did he want?" Tyler stole a fry. Burt was used to it.
"He gave us free tickets to his annual golf tournament in Bixby," Jodi was reading the tickets. "He wanted to make sure everyone got them, including Rose."
"That's not good," Tyler took a ticket. "He's wanting to get closer to our lovely scientist who is working on the lab."
"He will fail," Burt reminded them. "He had the chance when Patricia was talking to her. Rose knows all about Melvin, it's not going to work like that. Just like how Melvin won't build houses on here since El Blanco's presence won't allow that. One of the times to thank the government."
Larry opened his laptop again. He handed the papers back to Tyler. He had some for Jodi and Nancy. "Here are your copy of the suggestions and reviews from our guests last night."
"Oh, we also wanted to ask you if you could come up with designs for some statues," Jodi had read most of these already. It was great to have a hard copy. She looked over to Nancy who was reading hers.
"Statues?" Nancy glanced up from the papers.
"Yeah, a bronze statue," Jodi added.
Nancy tilted her head and looked off to the side. "Yeah I can start that. I'll come up with some ideas. I like these suggestions. I at least know what the people are wanting next. My mugs are still one of my best sellers. I was thinking about doing a dinner set and now that I have at least five buyers, that wouldn't be a problem."
"Oh, that would be cool," Larry pictured it. "We could go off on that, like the Fiesta ware but Perfection ware." Most of the others agreed with Larry. Burt tried not to roll his eyes.
The group just kept discussing the ideas, the reviews, and suggestions. Burt read over some of them since Larry had his own, which was all of the comments. He tried not to get frustrated. Some of those comments were just ridiculous.
"El Blanco is not a he or a she, they are both genders as they are a hermaphrodite," Burt read out loud. "And since they are born in June, it is also Pride Month, and we should also celebrate them for that and that they could possibly be on the spectrum since they could be Asexual."
"I never thought about that," Larry placed his hand on his chin thinking about that suggestion. "We might have to dig into that one a bit more, Graboids metamorphose into Shriekers, Shriekers reproduce as they are asexual and hermaphrodites with the help of intake of a large amount of food. Surviving after twenty-four hours they molt into Assblasters, and Assblasters lay egg or eggs. That's a tough one."
"Oh, Pride Month with El Blanco," Jodi mulled it over. "That is a tough one. I don't want to do like all the companies who make a buck off of a group who is oppressed by the same company who oppresses them. I want to celebrate that group and if El Blanco does fall under that then it would be an amazing especially a giant creature that isn't a small snail or worm that falls into that category. Something that noticeable and dangerous is part of the LGBTQ community and would be a great representation but we need to be sure. I want to keep being an ally for them, but I want to make sure. They are people too. This isn't easy to just answer. We would need to look into this more."
"Or we could not do anything about this at all," Burt suggested. "Just leave it the way it is."
"We should ask the scientists for their opinion on this, or maybe a poll on the internet," Larry tossed out ideas.
"I agree with Burt, let's just not touch that one," Tyler put his two cents in. "That's a touchy subject. Let's get through the other days first and then see how it goes."
"That is touchy," Nancy agreed. "I don't want to misrepresent anyone or anything."
"Let's get back to the other subjects then," Jodi moved on. "What about a permanent museum? It would be great to have something like that. All of this information, pictures, and historic items could always be shown and appreciated it. It doesn't even have to be that big. We can do a prebuilt building and have it shipped here and placed on a foundation. It would be the easiest and less trouble for the rest of the town and El Blanco."
"I do like that," Nancy agreed. "A museum would a nice addition to this hamlet. Plus, less impact on El Blanco with the construction. That is a great idea."
"And several suggestions for a permanent memorial," Jodi switched subjects again. "We should definitely do that. I just don't know if it should go in the museum or be its own entity."
"That would be amazing as well," Nancy agreed. "There should be a memorial for all of those lost. Both places would be beneficial."
"Did you get enough money for these things?" Burt tried to bring them back down to earth by shooting their balloons of thoughts.
"Not enough but we can get the public to help fund," Jodi justified. "Lots of people said they wanted to donate and see more history and more dedication to the graboid cycle and El Blanco."
