Chapter 24 - Sticks and Stones may Break My Bones

~X~

Today felt like a good day, like, one of those days you see at the beginning of a teenage highschool romance movie. Cliché half rock half pop music in the background about the angst of being an adolescent, you lay there like a princess with makeup and hair all done, a smile on your face as you open your eyes at the camera.

You feel happy, radiant even, as you jump out of bed to get dressed in a perfect outfit fit for the day ahead. You even dance a little, as if you could hear the music around you.

Harper smiled as she dressed to impress this day, feeling more self assured than never before. She didn't know why, but the fact that she knew so much more about herself made her confident in the ability to be herself. She was a half seer, half unactivated cursed werewolf with the ability to kick some ass. At least, as much ass as her shy self could muster.

Not even with the Salvatores lurking around the corner of their every turn made her angry that day. Their pitiful and confusing stares made her want to say, 'fuck off', but she didn't. No need to poke the vampire with issues.

Today was the day before the great Lockwood Masquerade party. Harper frowned as she walked down the stairs to see the whole town preparing the house, Henry always loved going to that event. The two of them would dress up and be eachothers dates every year, but not this year.

"Tyler!" She said loudly and jumped onto his back. Her brother huffed in mild annoyance, while people around them smiled and whispered to themselves. Even after great grief and hardships. The Lockwoods were a beacon for light. Especially Harper, who people really started to like and admire the more they saw her smile and be happy.

"You are way too heavy for this" He groaned, which was obviously a lie because as he held her on his back he still carried a box full of silver candlesticks heading for the outdoor buffé area.

"Liar" Harper said as she held on all the way to their destination where Mason was holding the fort down.

"The sleeping beauty finally aroused from her slumber" He joked as he held onto the latter for Magnus. Being a bit of an all round handyman landed him a direct order by Carol to fix all the chandeliers in the big tent. But he didn't complain, he would do anything to see Harper happy. Even a tiny bit did this for Tyler's sake, god knows that he needed some help now that Richard had passed.

"Hell yeah, ready to work" Harper said with a smile and looked around her. The place was already quite beautiful with only 30% done.

"Okay kids, go to the dining area and help around there. Carol is running herself ragged" Magnus stated. Harper and Tyler nodded and did as they were told with a smile on their face.

It didn't take long while arranging both the flowers and linen until somebody from the Elena gang came up to them. After Caroline had left there had been more radio silence from her, and Bonnie hadn't said much to Harper either. She sighed, and wondered whatever she had done wrong to upset them. It didn't help that the vampire brothers kept glancing at her and Tyler while they worked, something was off, she could feel it in her bones.

"Hey man, I did some rechearch on that stone you showed me" Jeremy Gilbert stated plain and simple to Tyler, making him turn away from Harper and look at the guy. Her eyebrows rose at Tyler's expression and wondered what kind of stone they were talking about, she had heard nothing about this from her brother.

"What?" Tyler scoffed. "Why?"

"I don't know, curiosity .. um, boredom.." Jeremy tried his best to sound disinterested, but both of them could see through his act.

"What did it say?"

"Turns out it's a part of this aztec legend, but I want to make sure it's the same kind of stone .." Jeremy told them, and Harper rolled her eyes. 'Aztec legend', yeah right, how fake that didn't sound.

"Could I maybe see it one more time?" He then asked, switching his tone from faking it to erratic.

"Nope, gave it away to my uncle" Tyler said and folded another napkin and handed it to Harper. She took it gently and laid it with the rest at the same time as giving him a serious look of 'explain everything later or I'm telling mom'.

"Why did you do that?" Jeremy sounded stressed and defeated. Harper was really starting to get a bad feeling about all of this.

"Because I'm done with legends and curses, I've got enough things on my plate right now. I don't want anything to do with that stone" Tyler stated and Harper smiled, glad that he hadn't gone over to the dark side.

"Yeah.. sure, it's probably silly folklore anyways" Jeremy said and turned to walk away. From the corner of her eye she spotted the two sneaky bastards, probably listening in to the conversation that had just taken place. What was it with this stupid stone! Harper needed to figure this out, for her family's sake.

Later during the day

Harper sat in her room, meditating just like it said in the books in front of her. It stated that it was easier that way to get a grip of the void around you, and to bend it to your will. She had placed every seer item around her to help. But the tarot deck remained untouched. As did the blue box.

She had yet to find the key, even after turning her mother's room upside down. No small key in sight. The lock looked so small that the key would be around the since of a tiny teaspoon at best.

With her eyes closed, she descended into her mind. Further and further down the rabbit hole. She had never done this before, and it was crucial that she knew what she was looking for, or rather when she was looking for. Before using her powers like this. Harper needed to see the future, but what part was still undecided. Maybe she would see if her relationship with Matt would go past makeout sessions at his house and some sporadic dates here and there that never lead to anything. Were they even a real couple? Harper had her doubts, because Caroline and Tyler made all of that seem easy and casual.

Multiple flashes came her way, most things she couldn't make out into a whole picture. She saw William walking on the beach with a guy built like a greek god on Fiji, and Carol dancing with Magnus in the living room to jazz music.. okay she would go back to that one later.. Then she saw a man, a handsome blonde man, with striking eyes piercing through her very being.

"Nicklaus.." She didn't even notice how her whole face seemed to blush.

But Harper just shrugged away all of it to find something more recent, something that would happen today. Her gut was telling her something, but what. Suddenly, a clear view was shown to her. Damon Salvatore was standing above a chained Mason. With a hot iron poker in his hands.

"No.." Harper watched without sound how he drove the poker through Mason, torturing him further. Like a knockback from pulling a trigger of a gun, Harper was pulled back into real life, her eyes still glazed over white. She knew what she needed to do. She needed to save her uncle, now.

With haste, avoiding as many people as she could, she made it to the garage and started looking through Carol's secret stash of vervain to take as much as she could in a small plastic bag the was in the same box. Harper then took Carol's car, it was the fastest, and reversed it out before driving recklessly fast away from the manor. She had no time to lose, it was now or never. He would die in about an hour. Putting her foot on the gas, she drove all the way to the Salvatore boarding house. Throwing the car door open after harshly breaking on the driveway and pulling up the handbrake to make it stay put.

She ran into the living room, alerting both men of her presence as she ran up to them.

"What the fuck are yo-" Damon was quick to try and stop her with the poker, but Harper was quick. Throwing the small amount of vervain that she had stolen in his face, making Damon scream out in agony before sinking to the ground, rubbing his eyes violently.

"Harper?" Mason asked and looked at her from his chained spot. The girl looked at him, her eyes changing back to normal with a gasp.

"Mason.. oh god are you okay?" She asked and started to pull at the chains, ready to get out of the vampire lair as fast as possible. She hated Bonnie, and any other member of the Elena fanclub. Fuck them, she didn't need friends like them if it meant that they would use her and Tyler like they did Mason.

"I'm fine.. thank you.. for whatever you did" He said truthfully. Mason was a defeated man at the moment. His 'true love' was fake and just using him, and he almost died for a stupid stone. He was so done with this town. He heard a 'click' and the chains fell loose on his body. With all his remaining strength, he pushed himself upwards. Harper was there in an instant, taking his arm around her shoulder to support him.

"Let's go home" She said with a small smile, and Mason smiled back. Damon, not knowing what to do as his face was burning and his vision deteriorating tried to stand up to stop them-

"Yeah, let's hurry" It was then that Jeremy and Alaric walked through the entrance to greet them. But with looks of fury, the two humans knew that they could do nothing but let them walk.

Later that Night

Mason was having a hell of a night, puking up all the poisons in his body to save his intesants the torture of digesting them further. Harper was there beside him, handing him a saltwater mixture to help him throw up more. She was grossed out about it, but understood that it needed to be done.

Magnus and Tyler sat on Mason's bed, listening in and trying to process the information that Mason told them. He had been dating Katherine, a vampire, for a really long time. She had told him about the curse of the sun and moon and had loved her enough to help her find the parts she said was required for the ritual to take place. What he hadn't known was the relationship his ex'd had with the town of Mystic Falls. Ultimately falling into a trap of her murderous exes that would've killed him today.

Harper frowned. She had never felt as out of the loop like now.

"Let's make a promise to each other.. as a pack and family" She rasped out, looking away from Mason and onto her father and brother.

"We tell each other everything from now on.. for our own survival" Harper stated, and the boys all agreed.

"No more lies, let the records show that the Mystic Falls pack is now formed" Magnus declared and looked between the teenagers. He wasn't ready to be alpha, not by a long shot. But if they wanted any chance of survival, it would be as one.

Magnus went into Harper's room before coming back with her old laptop, setting it up on the small desk Mason had never used.

"What are you doing dad?" She asked, walking up beside him as he sat down on the lousy office chair.

"Where is skype on this thing?" He grunted out, pointing at the screen with a beautiful Hogwarts wallpaper on it. Harper blushed as she opened the program for him, watching as he took over with dialing a number she had never seen before. Tyler got curious and went to stand beside Harper, not really understanding what was going on.

Finally, someone picked up. The screen filled up with a video of a woman, a bit older than Magnus with flaming red hair and deep brown eyes. Her face is rough with a scar on her lip and wrinkles around her eyes. Yet still, she was beautiful.

"Maria?" Magnus asked, testing to see if she could hear him through the computer speakers.

"Magnus? You idiot! Do you know what the time is?!" The woman hissed, trying her robe closer to her body.

"Is everyone up? I'm sorry for calling like this, but I got someone that wants to see you" Magnus stated, turning his gaze to Harper and Tyler.

"Yes, yes, everyone is here. What are you talking about son?" An old man walked up behind Maria, looking mighty tired. Magnus took a deep breath before nodding to himself.

"This is your grandchild old man, Harper" Magnus said and pulled Harper further into view for the camera. Suddenly a lot of commotion was heard from the other end, as multiple people tried to hug a spot to see her.

"Ahh, such beauty.. My name is Lucas, this is my wife Helena" The old man said and kissed a woman with snow white hair on her cheek.

"You goof.. stop that! Hi darling! Oh eres simplemente perfecta, welcome to the family!" Harper's grandmother rasped out. And Harper choked up on that sentence. She had a family, a big one by the looks of it, and they all welcomed her with open arms.

"Oh don't cry! I will start crying too" Maria sniffled before a tall man came up and hugged her from behind. He looked nice, warm eyes and a gruffy beard like Magnus.

"Hey there Magnus, sorry I missed your call before. Left the phone at home when I was working" The unknown man said and hugged Maria a bit tighter.

"No problem Eric" Magnus stated with a nod. Harper was almost falling into a crying mess as Tyler held her close to comfort her. Mason has finally come out of the bathroom to also join the call, wanting to see what a real werewolf family looked like.

"Cariño, you look like you have something more to tell us" Helena suddenly said, as she studied her son more closely. And it was true, Magnus was deep in thought, ready to drop a bombshell onto his family members.

"Well.. here's the thing.." He said and launched into the discussion of starting a new pack with the new acquired family he had gotten across the country. Hours upon hours of talking and crying, discussions and debates, it seemed like they all had come to a conclusion. With his family as support, and the Rivera pack as guidance. The Mystic Falls pack was ready to be formed.
